You raise some solid points about Henry’s traits; I think that his reason to be so horrid is possibly by the jealously of his brother, Peter, whose the ‘golden child’ in their parents’ eyes. As such, Henry feels the need to relentlessly torture to probably gain attention as a number of misbehaved kids do so.
Whenever something wrong goes in the house or anywhere else, Henry is the first to blame and there are instances where he’s not even the cause of them. I wish they go further into his reason to bully rather than give him increasingly-petty punishments.
I think what made the Horrid Henry books appealing to me as a kid was that, even though he was an brat, he usually got his comeuppance at the end, and when he did win it was usually against someone more unlikable that him, or at least through ridiculously elaborate plans that were interesting to see unfold
The books are genuinely good. There's one I remember where both Henry and Peter are invited to separate live TV shows, only for the parents to say Henry can't go but Peter can. Henry then quickly questions why Peter can go but not him, and the mum says he has a point. Little details like that are noticeably absent in the cartoon adaptation.
@@louisrobson6914
That is a good point.
@ToasterMan Productions You’re probably right, as I had only access to a limited number of the books when I was a kid. However, one thing I always recalled was that Henry’s narration made the character and his thought process very interesting, as we got to see how Henry justified many of his schemes in his head. He wasn’t some kind of evil mastermind, but he was a selfish bratty kid who happened to see his actions as justified responses against what he saw as unfair limits, and he could be occasionally witty and clever while doing them
I also read that author Francesca Simon saw her Henry stories as a way of escapism, a way families could “experience” mischievous behavior without any consequences, so maybe she wanted to aim her books at an audience that was old enough to understand that you weren’t supposed to look up to Henry
I feel the exact same about the books and show pretty does the same thing but can understand why a lot of people would find it to be unbearable
Dennis the Menace is so much better than Horrid Henry. At least Dennis is likeable and you do feel sorry for him because of all the stuff that happens to him. There's a reason why Dennis is a menace, he is treated badly.
@JoshProductions Henry is also treated badly because his parents favorites Peter.
@@sophiebyers5496 well in the books, that is true, and also because Peter is truly whiny in the books, so you're supposed to hate him. But in the show, he does nothing wrong and Henry is just mean to him for no reason.
@@sophiebyers5496 but that stupid tv show made over 251 episodes and Mona the vampire she saw Henry he is hammering the sign Mona the vampire she say hey Henry what happened to your TV show? Henry he say well after all 251 episodes of my show I've decided to closed down my tv show factory see this sign? It says (OUT OF BUSINESS OCTOBER 31 MAY 21) after i made all the episodes and peter he say the final line of the series is goodnight fluffy goodnight fang and they closed down my TV show of all barkingberg England so I've reached closing time
Sometimes I feel like horrid Henry is a ripoff of Dennis the menace
Hope they will make Harry Potter: The Animated Series
Henry also tried to murder Peter as soon as he was born.
I actually find Mr. Bean: Animated Series a lot more entertaining and nostalgic the same way as the predecessor that is the original Mr Bean. I kinda wonder what Mrs. Wicket and Scrapper looks like in live-action.
*Fun Fact:* In the Mr. Bean documentary, Rowan Atkinson was inspired by the woks of Jacques Tati, the French comedian known for his role as Mr. Hulot, back when he was in college.
The assistance dog in Creature Comforts always stood out to me. I hope she's still around and doing well.
Her name is pickles aka my waifu
I remember watching Angelina Ballerina on PBS Kids with my sister when I was little. I found it relaxing.
As for my favorite from this decade, hands down Shawn The Sheep.
Three of my favourite 2000's British cartoons are "Rubbadubbers", "The Mr Men Show" and "Numberjacks"
True classics 😊👍
I bloody love Grizzly Tales. Feels nice to see more people spreading the word about it.
I know its an underrated gem
Oh god that terrified me 😂
Anyone out there remember this animated show that used to air on CiTV, called “Bounty Hamster ”?
It’s so good.
Does anyone else watch these cartoons to this day? I still watch Shaun the Sheep to this day! 😂😂😂
Same Here!! It's One Of My Favorite Works Of Aardman's, Next To Wallace And Gromit! 💙
@@jasminebryant7926 Absolutely! Hell, without A Close Shave, we never would’ve gotten Shaun the Sheep! 😁
I still watch angelina and fifi and the flowetots, these shows are the best
Jambareeqi, this video has taught me a valuable lesson.
Horrid Henry doesn’t not hold up for me at all…
I think horrid Henry is Dennis and gnasher done wrong
Ah yes, I remember most of these growing up in the 2000's. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Jambareeqi!
Wow I have been rewatching Horrid Henry lately and all of a sudden I come across this lol. I really love the show it tends to be very relatable to kids or teens who are always getting in trouble like myself
Dennis the Menace is better than Horrid Henry.
@@joshproductions07 I prefer Horrid Henry over Dennis the Menace, because Dennis is like a bad luck magnet. _Horrid Henry_ is more equivalent to _What's With Andy?_ than it is _Dennis the Menace_
@@0deadx21 I don't really know what you mean but okay
@@joshproductions07 And I don't know what you mean? Do you know who Dennis, Andy and Henry are? I prefer Andy and Henry. Dennis is an oblivious parody of a child.
@@0deadx21 I know who Dennis and Henry are. Never heard of Andy.
I really loved Little Robots! It aired a bit here in Canada and I always found it cute and fun when I was a kid.
I watched Angelina ballerina a lot when I was a kid it was pretty, I wanted to do ballet but my mum didn't have any money for any lessons but I always copied Angelina's dances, then my mum bought me a plushie of Angelina I also make mimic the dances. thanks for reminding me of those memories Jambareeqi
7:24 I got an ad right when she was about to hit the cat. Perfect cut.
There had been plenty of favourites from early 2000s like BB3B, Watch my chops, Kitt and Kantrop, The Secret show, Zombie Hotel and League of Super Evil.
And also, my personal fav UK cartoons:
*Bounty Hamster and Planet Sketch*
Mr Bean was my childhood, we used to watch the DVD's on repeat, it was amusing. And the fact my country made the first 4 seasons' animation is just icing on the cake
Horrid Henry, Mr Bean and Shaun The Sheep were my best shows back in the day I miss them so much.
I also loved Timmy Time the theme song lives in my head rent free loved it back then still love it now.
They actually still air the mr bean cartoon, its on cartoon network now for some reason, and shaun is on iplayer
Engie Benjy, Little Robots and Grizzly Tales are those type of formatted shows that played into a young audience as well as trauma (Grizzly Tales)
I still reckon Mr. Bean: The Animated Series and Shaun the Sheep being part of established franchises.
It makes sense because those shows have the trait to talk to the audience, unless it wasn't very often.
I used to love Horrid Henry as a kid. The first time I've heard of it was when I was at primary school, and we all voted on which DVD to watch. For the most part, it appealed to my enjoyment of cartoons that either had slapstick violence or basically every character hating and making fun of each other. I very rarely took cartoons seriously unless they were emotional at their core, and my parents always told me not to copy bad influences from the programs I watched, so Horrid Henry overall didn't affect my influence majorly.
That said though, the show is really hard to watch as an adult, made even worse by how much of a downgrade it is in quality and charm compared to the books. The first two seasons are mostly frustrating and obnoxious to sit through, and while the seasons afterwards have toned down on the bad behaviour of the characters they come off as slow and boring with little energy. Even back then, my parents made it clear they did not like the cartoon, and it's easy to see why. You can even look up some reviews and find parents complaining that it negatively influenced their children, and I don't blame them.
It's the opposite for me. I hated this show as a kid because every character was an asshole, but now I love it for the same reason
I remember reading the first book of Horrid Henry and I actually find it convincing. Both Henry and Dennis The Menace have the same level of trouble making.
In a say Horrid Henry is the UK equivalent of Caillou
I personally think the first two seasons aren't that bad. The first season in particular followed the books after all. But much later on the show becomes really boring and unbearable. Henry isn't even that horrid compared to his book counterpart
@Master Knife
The first season is more faithful on a surface level, but it's lacking in the small details to really come together. I guess if I have to pick a favourite season, it would be something that's a bridge between 2 and 3, but that doesn't exist so yeah.
I went to an open day at Aardman during my 2nd 🥈 year at university. The host mentioned 3 things he hates: the films 🎥 of Guy Ritchie (particularly his Disney Aladdin remake), Everest (the movie) and Timmy Time. I’m so glad 😀 to learn that Timmy Time isn’t really a bad show. Thank you ☺️. Aardman can do no wrong!
Why do I have a feeling Jaqueline Wilson's version of Horrid Henry would be amazing & complex
@@louisrobson6914 yeah...plus the neglectful parenting & favouritism will be exposed & pointed out.
@@louisrobson6914 Yeah. I think Horrid Henry is the most complex character than you think of. The reason why he becomes a brat because he wanted to get some love and attention he deserves.
Awesome review Jam, I like how even though there were some shows on this list that you didn’t like that you were at least honest about your thoughts and didn’t go into a fit of rage.
For me as a Yankee growing up, I enjoyed Shaun The Sheep, Little Robots, Rubbadubbers, Mr. Men Show, and Angelina Ballerina
Creature Comforts is my jam!
Engni Benji looks like a grown up version of Sid The Science Kid to me
Btw the narrator for Timmy Time was only recently added like in the past 2 years. It never had a narrator when I was a kid
I really wish Roary The Racing Car was mentioned because that show is very nostalgic for me
Here's my opinions
Engie Benji: Very cute show and enjoy the stop motion!
2dtv: Talk about a awkward show.
Little robots: Absolutely adorable!
Mr bean the animated series: One of my favourite shows and I still enjoy!
Creature comforts: I'm still shocked I watched this as a little girl! I'll enjoy them a lot!
Grizzly tales for gruesome kids: I love this show, perfect for Halloween, I really love season 1 to 4 the most.
Monkey dust: a lil creepy.
Horrid henry: I really regret watching this as a child, I like Dennis the menace more.
Shaun the sheep: One of my favourite stop motion shows and I wish Aardman the best of luck
Timmy time: the perfect spinoff and I wish we got more of it. (I didn't know there was a narrator in the show)
Angelina Ballerina: I really miss this show and I quite love the song.. The cgi continuation was pretty bad though..
Dennis the Menace > Horrid Henry. At least Dennis is likeable.
Henry is actually even worse in the comics, often displaying creepy child traits and sociopathic levels of horridness. He bullies everyone around for fun, never shows remorse for any of his actions, and seems to genuinely hate his family (he even says this to their faces).
Yeah the show really toned him down. He also starts breaking the 4th wall a lot in the 3rd series and in the later series as well
@@masterknife8423 It's almost like watching _What's With Andy?_ all over again.
I only saw 2 episodes of Little Robots 🤖, read the picture book 📕, bought a toy 🧸 from Legoland and rewatched the intro recently. Rewatching the intro gave me the impression that it takes place in a civilisation built under a scrapyard where all the robots were sent for scrap but Tiny repaired himself and his friends and now they hide away from the scrap owners. The fact that they’re named after characteristic words but don’t stick to what their names say they are is a huge improvement from what Hanna-Barbera did with The Smurfs and what Roger Hargreaves did with the Mr Men
Isn't anyone here talking about "64 Zoo Lane"? The theme song was a banger!
I loved Shaun the Sheep and Timy Time but OMG I LOVE ANGELINA BALLERINA SO MUCH!!
Aww yeah, Angelina Ballerina & Shaun the Sheep! Be still my nostalgic heart. 👐💗
Ooooh yes, yes....I knew you'd bring up Grizzly Tales.
Great list, a lot of childhood favourites, Grizzly Tales for Gruesome kids is my personal favourite. Maybe you should do some shows from earlier decades (like the 80's), I believe a certain tank engine appeared on screens from that decade, perhaps he should be given a video of his own.
I agree with you about horrid henry, I actually enjoyed it as a kid, but it really doesn't hold up today.
A shame I didn't read the books much. They're really well done.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 I read the books, they were better than the cartoon
Much prefer the Horrid Henry books much more than the show.
I saw 👀 episodes of Engy Benjy but none them had audience interactivity or realistic engineering. I remember things like:
Spaceship 🚀 being painted the colour of a tree 🌲 so he thinks he is a tree and won’t fly
Plane ✈️ had hiccups so was fed on Orange Custard Fizz and it made things worse
Bus 🚌 goes sleepwalking and it’s a lot the Bob The Builder episode where Roley went sleepwalking.
I also had an Engy Benjy CD-Rom, bought Engy Benjy magazines and saw adverts for Engy Benjy toys 🧸. It’s also amazing 🤩 to find out that it stars ✨ Ant & Dec. Thank you 😊
Nice. Wasn't Rubberdubbers a 2000's show actually? What are your thoughts on that.
Grizzly Tales is my favorite from the 2000s since I'm beginning to become a fan of horror.
There are some I like such as Creature Comforts, Robotboy, Bounty Hamster, and the Cramp Twins.
Bounty Hamster was such a good show. I’m glad you mentioned it.
“Meanwhile on the other side of the universe…”
@@toohawttoohandle Thank you!
@@LewisDavies2007 You’re welcome.
And also, who’s your favorite character from Bounty Hamster?
@@toohawttoohandle It's been a long time since I last watched the show. Maybe the two main characters Hamster and Cassie?
@@LewisDavies2007 The hamster’s name is Marion.
BTW, my favorite Bounty Hamster character has always been Cassie.
I recently got the season 1 DVD box set of Shaun The Sheep & I loved every minute.
I grew up in the early 2000s and I have a nostalgia memories of watching many of these cartoons.
What are your thoughts on the voice acting of Horrid Henry and Shaun the Sheep (Shaun and Timmy are voiced by Justin Fletcher)?
Like you said, Justin Fletcher voices both Shaun and Timmy, which is amazing! His performances are so cute and endearing. And the weird thing is, he’s actually making sheep sounds and not talking, which is so cool! John Sparkes is also great as the Farmer and Bitzer. Impeccable vocal range. And yeah, the others are great too! 🤩👍🐑👨🌾
The voice acting for horrid henry is hit and miss for me, some voices are easy on the ears, others aren't so much.
I met Justin Fletcher years ago. I was obsessed with him as a toddler so I almost freaked out when I met him
Was'nt Horid Henry took off CITV by Ofcom because CITV wanted to make no new shows and just re air that forever so they moved it to Nick Toons UK who do the exact same thing with aloing with constant Spongebob re runs.
@@louisrobson6914 CITV used to have so many Original TV shows made for them then just gave up just because of Henry. Alot of CITV shows ended up airing on nicktoons though or Nick other Like My parents are aliens and Grizzly Tales did.
@@louisrobson6914 Yet outside of books they is very little Merch for the show. It had a toyline but it was just painted figures with cheak Pranktoy fake bugs.
Though both are better than CN UK/Europe who think airing a show like up to a Year after US airdate and editing out scenes and changing dialoge at random of almost every show they make is a good idea.
@Louis Robson
Aside from Horrid Henry, the only CITV shows I remember watching were Pokemon and Atomic Betty. Pokemon I would try to watch at every opportunity until I was 13, when I just kind of grew out of it. Atomic Betty I don't remember being entirely fond of it, but in retrospect is actually an adequate space action show with some great use of flash animation techniques. Both of these weren't original programs for CITV, just licensed for UK broadcast, so it's fair to say Horrid Henry was to the company that Spongebob was to Nickelodeon.
6:18 Classic, we played the intro on full volume on my freinds phone
Hated the mum in Horrid Henry, the dad was slightly more tolerable because he was good to Henry (sometimes) like in the go kart episode
The only other Geordie cartoon characters, aside from Engie Benjy, I can think of are Sid the Sexist and Sunshine from Tugs.
Animation needs more Welsh accented characters, I think.
"Hmm, England does some pretty good"
(Insert Cockney Accented Yorkshire Piglet)
Nevermind.
I remember having nightmares about grizzly tales as a kid, specifically that one episode where the toilet floods.
Man, Horrid Henry was the best!
17:22 SHAUN THE SHEEP! HELP ME FROM THIS NIGHTMARE!
The Mr. Bean cartoon was great for my young mind. The live-action series always felt more grown-up and boring by comparison. As I grew up, it kinda flipped, and I appreciate the live-action one more. Still, the cartoon will always make me feel like a child in the best way.
The live-action was debuted first before the animated series and it never failed to make me laugh. I actually like both versions.
Id love to hear you do one for the 2010s shows (i mainly grew up with them)
Wanna hear your opinion on shows like Mister maker, horrible histories, and class dismissed, mabye also shows that got a reboot in this time, too, like Dennis & Gnasher and Danger Mouse, and how theyve changed
You do have good points about Horrid Henry being, well, horrid and his parents being terrible parents, but you didn't mention Perfect Peter. Peter is worse than Henry for the simple fact that he barely gets told off. Even if Peter is intentionally being a twat, Henry is the one who gets punished, how is that fair? This shows how Henry is a victim of neglection and child abuse, leading him to these behaviours
Hey, Jam. If you ever get around to 2010 British cartoons, please talk about Octonauts! I grew up watching it on Disney Junior (rip) and it is FRIGHTENING how well that show hold up. The fact that 18 yr old me gets as much enjoyment out of it as 8 yr old me did is a testament to how much love and care went into making it! It's on Netflix if your curious.
This hypes me up
2:28 If you like Geordie accents in British kids shows, check out TUGS. One character has a really great Geordie accent (Sunshine.)
My dad is very hard to please but even he thinks Nick Park is a genius when he sees Creature Comforts. I watched that a lot, as well as Wallace & Gromit and Shaun The Sheep 🐑, when I was a kid 👦. I haven’t heard of the Christmas 🎄 special before; I must see it this year!
I told a close friend of my family’s about the Mr Bean cartoon but she doesn’t believe that Mr Bean needs a cartoon. Next time I see her, I’m going to tell her why you said it exists.
I definitely remember a lot about the side characters. Particularly Mrs Wickett and her cat 🐈 Scrapper. It was shocking when Mr Bean let them get arrested, even though he knew they were innocent, just so he could get some peace.
Did Richard Curtis have a hand in writing ✍️ the cartoon?
I despised Horrid Henry when I was younger. The part where Horrid Henry says NO and goes into his mouth really scared me as a kid mainly because I'm autistic. I'm 11 now and see this show now makes me regret watching it. I even saw the books in my school library! Horrid Henry isn't a good show for kids or even toddlers.
You are the first person I've ever seen talk about Angelina Ballerina in a review format on here, I'm glad cus its such a charming show and I have alot of fun memories of both the original and the 3d continuation. As for Timmy Time, I swear when I watched it when I was younger there was no narration, and I understood what was going on just fine, I even checked for older uploads on YT and yeah there wasn't any narration before, no idea why they decided to add that in. I get your point for Horrid Henry and why you don't like it but idk I like the fact that everyone is a dickhead lol, the kids actually act like how some year 6 kids do, its better than having them act all safe, cutesy and fake all the time, but I get your point, there needs to be a nice balance between the naughtiness and punishment.
I hope you get to talk about 2010s British cartoons because they get so overlooked simply because they aren't as nostalgic and popular compared to the older stuff which I find so unfair because they're genuinely great, stuff like Scream Street, the new Danger Mouse and Lilybuds (a cute preschool show) are some of my favourites. Thank you for this video!
I totally agree with your thoughts on horrid henry this show really hasn't aged well at all with bad morals and awful characters
Fun Fact: The studio that animated Horrid Henry was Nelvana, which also worked on the early 90's Tintin series. Now I would pay to see Captain Haddock talk some sense into Henry, knowing his relationship with Abdullah when he had to stay at Marlinspike Hall XD.
Another thing, I think your criticism of 2DTV was a little unfair, It's not going to be with today's politics and even I wasn't around during it's inception, I still find it funny at times.
British cartoons certainly were something for an American child like me.
Yes I saw in the thumbnail my waifu pickles from creature comforts
i remember seeing the mr bean cartoon when it first hit the screen in i think 2001 on the itv1 channel such a weird little cartoon with loads of charm though the animators really loved their female anatomies
I’m a bit upset that you left out the show danger mouse I’m from the US and I love danger mouse
Danger Mouse is talked about in the 90’s British cartoons video. 🙂
Ningel Planer also narrated the Discworld Audiobooks.
Horrid Henry should crossover with Grizzly Tales lol
That would be fun.
2DTV is awesome. Im a huge fan of cartoons thatre a product of their time

I think I remember watching Little Robots as a kid, I'm not entirely sure. But I must say, Horrid Henry is secretly a Marvel supervillain! Mystery solved. No normal human being can transform into a tyrannosaurus in a public area and transform back when his mother calls him! It's just not physically or scientifically possible! He must be a mutant or an alien, because of his physical feats. I can actually see him go into an epic battle against either the X-Men or the Avengers!
I have a feeling Henry would work better as an antagonist and him getting his comeuppance by the end of each episode
11:53 the Host is apparently named Uncle Grizzly
I saw 👀 Grizzly Tales advertised on Nicktoons. I loved 🥰 the look 👀 and personality of the host but I wasn’t a horror fan so I didn’t want to see the stories. Thanks 😊 for reminding that all children 👶 have different tastes. I’ll have to keep that in mind when my sister and her boyfriend start a family
Rewatching horrid henry now is sad. When I was younger I enjoyed the show despite horrid being horrid I never wanted him to fail. It sad rewatching it now became I just feel bad for the kid he only misbehaves because it the only reason how he get attention from his parents. Meanwhile his parents are always saying about perfect peter is he obviously a golden child. Peter can be worst then henry he a lying little brat who fakes crying to get henry into trouble.
Have you ever heard of Still Game?
I LOVE SHAUN THE SHEEP!
Horrid Henry sound like cailou
My mum tried to get me into Horrid Henry when I was a kid 👦, because my sister and my piers were into it. I even remember that she once played an audiobook tape of the first book 📖 with a very annoying theme tune. But I refused to get into Horrid Henry for the same reason I refused to get into Dennis The Menace: I liked to copy the actions of what I watched and I knew it was a bad idea 👎 to copy Dennis and Henry’s actions. Interesting 🧐 learning from you that Dennis works but Henry doesn’t.
I did see the live action Horrid Henry The Movie 🎥 though, for 2 reasons: I felt it was about time I got to know Henry and it featured Dick & Dom
Funny Mr enter recently did a video of horrid Henry

dude i remember so many of these from when i was a kid
also horrid henry sucked and i hated the theme song a lot
Horrid Henry is Peppa Pig for boys
Why didn’t you add Little Einsteins and Earth to Luna, they are British
What about Eddsworld??
Why do u consider "Horrid Henry" a bad influence, when u said that "Dennis the Menace" is an impowerment fantasy for kids?
After all, they are basically the same character
To me I think it's a ripoff of Dennis the menace
@@lewisjohnson3448 that's true 👍
but in his 90's British Cartoons 🇬🇧 video, Jambareeqi explains that Dennis isn't a role model, but more of a power fanstay for kids. Horrid Henry is basically the same type of character, but he says that he's a bad role model for kids
It's a bit confusing 😕
2DTV is better than the rebooted spitting image
A few years after 2DTV, ITV aired a show called Headcases which was more or less the same, but with 3D CGI animation...
Because these shows are so "in the moment", it's inevitable that they will age badly, but that creates a certain degree of interest in their status as a time capsule. It's also worth noting that Dead Ringers, a live-action satirical sketch show series from the same time, returned to radio about a Decade ago and has been thriving in the current hellscape. You could argue that it's a bit too safe, but it still manages to be consistently funny - part of that is because its impersonations of notorious Tory politicians and TV/radio personalities are turned into comic characters whose quirks and speech patterns lend themselves to multiple appearances...
First! From midvale, utah
I’m not trying to be rude but I don’t think Henry or any of the characters in horrid Henry are meant to be role models
