That's pretty cool. My dad did this 30 years ago when I was 10. He used a 2stroke engine because the gearbox is sealed from the engine. On 2 strokes the engine is lubricated through the oil that is mixed with the gas. Made it a lot easier. I believe it was a Honda CR80 that he used.
So glad i found this vid! I had the same idea about 2 years ago, but I never quite figured out how to proceed. I have a seized 110cc pit bike engine that I want to turn into just a transmission to couple it with an 1950s stationary engine. Good to see it's actually possible and not incredibly complicated.
You kept stuff you don't need. The gearbox has no plain bearings and is splash fed. You don't need oil pressure so you don't need the oil pump. The oil was originally pressurised to force it up to the cylinder head which you don't have anymore. I did this mod on a small Honda engine about 30 years ago and it worked perfectly.
well it depends, if you're using it in a gokart and the gokart already has a centrifugal clutch then you can do away with the oil pump, otherwise you still need it because the clutch needs cooling.
You could tap the oil supply that went to the top end, and supply oil to a engine being used, like Briggs, or Honda clone, it would just need a drain back, basically using the atv engine as a oil pan and pump/sump for the engine, haha kinda crazy 🤣👍
Been looking for a very compact; 3, 4, or 5 speed parallel gearbox for my 66cc bicycle. Something that'll take some abuse. What I was thinking was using an isolated/ stand alone gearbox cut from a little 50-80cc dirt bike case. You're video is proof that it's possible. Thanks man!
You can also just cut the rod at the base near the crank bearing and do a static balance test and make adjustments for harmonic symmetry with the crank counter weights.
Great work! I seen the video of the other guy buying one similar to this you made or the same one as this off of you or you gave to him not sure he didn't really say LOL but anyhow I just converted a 4-speed pit bike 125cc engine into a transmission/gearbox that will be mated up with a 16 HP v-twin Cub cadet side shaft engine with the governor bypassed and with pipes and head porting it should be pushing a good 25HP, just working on getting a motorcycle frame or custom making one at the moment.
how can i find a engine to actually do it with? i was trying to fine a engine with manly the transmission left but i cant.. EDIT: nvm i found a engine i could use "ZXTDR 125cc Engine 4-Stroke Motor Semi-Auto 3 Forward 1 Reverse Gear for ATV 4 Wheelers Tricycle" on amazon
@@diciplezane77zane57 just find used 4 speed pit bike engine because they are usually pretty cheap if the top end is blowed up or not running then you just cut the rod and flip it inside the crank webs than weld it and then grind off some of the counterweights to balance it.
i love this idea ive been looking for a manual transmission for a gokart or drift trike that i can attach to a harbor freight motor and this idea is freaking perfect because you can find plenty broken dirtbike engines on craigslist
Nicely done ! T-man sent me over to have a look. I've thought of doing this but you're the 1st I've seen actually do it... Nice ! Kudos for giving it to him...
Hi I would Like to know how did this Transmission work out, Did it Shift on the fly, Or did you have to pull the clutch.I,m building 1 right now 6 speed, for a scooter 180cc, Custom frame, for my Grandson, Let me know how you did Thanks Brian
Great Job..!!!! old Harley gearbox’s were made really similar.you could use pretty much any atv bottomend with reverse.the only trouble I’d have is turning Down the shaft . I don’t have a lathe..if made a longer shaft on the other end to put another Sproket on it you could have 4wd . Or Maybe use 2 gear boxes..
I'd cut the front half off and just use the clutch input shaft and ditch the clutch. Chain drive input on the clutch shaft, seal the trans off and go. Good idea though
Id love to see you add a predator to the top of it and put a belt style torque converter between the motor and transmission. Then it acts sorta like a car transmission.
Ok, no rush. I'm thinking of building a two seater that this will go in. But if the kids and my wife are going to be driving it they might like the idea of an indicator. But Its not a must have.
Have you tried it on anything and do you think it'll make much noise? I might make one to go behind a v twin vanguard so I have a strong manual gearbox with reverse on my 3/4 scale hot rod I'm building it looks awesome though well done mate
Should have cut the cam and chain closer off of the case and moved your input sprocket closer to the crank case. It would make it bullet proof but great work.
Jason Ouellette Yup mind blown, what a great idea 💡, to me this is what the internet is for , sharing ideas... I bet there's 1000s of people who threw out a project from lack of a gearbox.
I keep seeing this comment over and over that I made it harder to make by making a new shaft. If you tried to use the crank it would be so off balance it would rattle apart the transmission itself and the kart it was on.
Would it be possible to counterweight the counterweight? Like add weight to the shaft? Or maybe cut the rod flush And grind some weight off the counterweight...
What if you left the piston and jug on it ? And removed the head and replaced it with a metal plate with a hose fitting on top. Then use a chain from your engine and set it up to where your engine piston is top dead center when your transmission piston is all the way down. Use the piston for a air pump .. pretty much like a super charger . Blow thru your carb with it? Could it work?
It would be interesting to remove the connecting rod and spin the original crankshaft in your lathe at high rpms to see if it would be balanced enough to use it as is ???
I know this is an old video but I am very interested in building a torque converter/gearbox hybrid engine using a predator, belt torque converter, and bottom end from my Zhongshan 250cc 5 spd engine.

I wanted to do this when I was 12, my go-kart friends laughed at me. I didn't know how to do it, but I knew it could be done. Nice work, came out great. I would like it if you checked out my crazy homemade go-kart, made from some scraps, and some new parts. It has two engines, one has a 3 speed transmission, the other is just a Predator 212 manual belt clutch. Both engines work at the same time. ( Homemade two engine Go-kart ) P.S. I don't know how to do links, sorry.
Good job but instead of doing all of this work just get a Polaris four wheeler transmission they are a separate unit from the engine and have a CVT clutch setup.
Bill, Works good, it even looks right... Maybe for some of the looser trx200sx engines that can become transmissions. I think it was a good idea to replace the main shaft rather then cut and weld it... BTW, the shaft was made at the "home products division"? Well done, my friend!
Just wondering why you could not just use the crankshaft as it was minus the piston arm. I just dont understand but this seems like it could be used for all sorts on neat tom fooliery
I don't think you should weld that shaft together because it's going to change the hardness of the gear is it not and the hardness of the shaft will it not soft in the middle therefore as soon as you test drive it the first time it'll wipe itself completely out I would just use the stock crank press it apart cut it and a new rod pin and a spacer to keep it from pressing completely together

You could have made a bearing housing to help with the lateral load and welded it where you welded that seal ring.
Absolutely brilliant

Hey William, I was wondering if that " sending unit" that indicates what gear your in would still work on this?
