Lyrics: Hey, everybody! In the short video, i'm going to try my best to teach you everything that i know about playing slap. It's gonna go in! So the cool thing about playing slap, it's that it's very percussive, absolute like playing drums, since i love like mixing playing the drum and playing the guitar at the same time. Kinda like what i'm doing now! So let's start from the beginning, with the thumb. Gonna have your thumb, kinda flick on the rist, and smack it into the strings. Kinda like the bony side of the thumb. But the real hero here is the left hand, which stopping on the other strings that i don't wanna play from playing. So you'll see i want fretting some notes i want there. I'll also got a finger stopping the other strings muting them from also playing. And if i don't do that, it not really what i'm looking for. So i find it while i'm playing slap, usually concentrating more on the notes that i'm not wanting to play, and the notes that i do want to. But that's not all you can do with your left hand. Another important part is to use the left hand to get some dead notes here. And dead note is when you playing a string, but you don't get a regular note, you just hitting like a drum, like i'm doing now. I got my index finger going over all the string and then the other three just hitting into them. You can also get some dead notes with your thumb. That's i does it now. When you playing slap, most of the notes you're gotta be playing or dead notes, very percussive. Now i'm hitting them, another jack need to get a dead note. That's why you take your finger on your right hand bring it underneath the string, and you smack it into the fretboard, and it gives you a cool like snare drum sound. Yeah, i said that in. And you don't need to just use it to get dead notes here. You do also get in to get some regular notes. Let's try that now! Now brings us to the next point is octave. So, if you're playing a note right here with your index finger, two frets over, two strings up, you got the second note there, using a higher octave. And slap players, especially slap bass players would then hit alone now with the thumb and pop the high one. Sound something like this: If it's feels right, get their sound so right. I'm gonna have trouble with this now, it's a little bit harder on the guitar, but at least, I'll be lag excusing now. But feels a little bit better on bass because the strings are a little bit further apart. Now lets move on to something that's a bit more gear for the guitar, and having strings really close together. This is something i call sprinting. So instead of having my hand over here (my right hand), i can bring it into the fretboard, still hitting with my thumb, but on obstroke, I'm hitting with my ring finger. Someone kinda like this. Kinda like strumming, but a little bit more hectic. You can do some different, you know, rhythms with it. It's pretty useful with some notes. I also like to add in my middle finger to get some triplets like that, throw that in there. I started calling it buffering to the sprinting. Cause it kinda sounds like, you know, as old cartoons, with the character with one of run-off screenroom quick, and the feature into the little tornado. Kinda sounds like that: I also use this with a bit of strumming like that. Really anyway you can get a dead note. It's all fair game. So back to the octave we doing earlier. You got that index finger there, two frets over, two strings up, you got a octave. But more specific to the 8-string, another reason why i love playing slap on the 8-string is that you take the same relationship two frets over, bringing all the way over the top. You got another octave, but now three octaves up. But i won't play that note on it soon the high note. I play that two times strings at the same fret, and it feels very similar to that octave check we drove. And it sounds pretty cool! That was some sprinting. Feels pretty good on the 8-string. Also, instead using the top two notes, you use the top three. And you got a cool mindy thing going on. And that is pretty much everything i know about playing slap. And you can just put it all together! So, i hope you enjoy the video, and i hope you enjoy the giving keys without the instrument. Yeah, thanks for watching! That was a good one! Yeah, i think that's it, i think that's it! Thanks y'all! Yeah, so going some food! Yeah, i think that's you, i think that's you! All the cameras are recording and the audio are recording? Sweet!

not gonna lie. you dont even have to play guitar to like this. this video is damn entertaining. been watching for awhile and youve been a huge inspiration on how ive learned. keep it up man. really impressive
I just tried this after not picking up an instrument for at _least_ several months. Unless I'm doing it very wrong, this doesn't work well on acoustic guitars. Better on the bass, but the strings were not kind to my fingers. Ow. On the plus side, I feel weirdly alive. So there's that.
what I do is I play with a hybrid set on guitar that has thicker bass strings, and thinner treble strings. I keep the tension on the bass strings so it doesn't rip my fingers apart.
I don't have money for a guitar and I can't play a good note to save my entire family, but I still clicked like on this. Thx for the general music knowledge, mate.

Rob: Plays 8 string guitar and 2 drums at the same time whilst narrating everything he's doing
Me: tries to slap on acoustic guitar and dislocates thumb (this actually happened😂)
Well, hellø there, felløw human!
Holy crap
That Must hurt
im sure it did
I can dislocate my thumb without pain so I'm happy I'm safe from this
How do you dislocate your thumb by playing slap?
@@billgaming8623 slap
Do a song with all open strings, no capo and you can only use tuning knobs no whammy.
Johnny Hartman or editing
The strings would break
How to not play music .
me before the vid: "oh 7 minutes of all rob knoledge of slap
After vid: "i dont know if i should cry or laugh"
I want a djent cover of the seinfeld theme.
Rob: *Says he’s having trouble with it*
Also Rob: *Sounds like a god no matter what
someone should make this a guitar hero chart
You see this, BandiPat?
Man im glad its as easy as he makes it seem...*cough*
RedCorsairr - You seem to need a cough drop.
accidentally watched this on 1.25 speed, was a bit freaked out by how fast you could play, slowed it back down, no longer freaked out, but I'm amazed.
Dude, dude.... Now, honestly. I teach music and I'm a band instructor, I do it for a living. The amount of concepts and technique; not only did you describe, but demonstrate in 7:24...With just such ease. I couldn't unravel all that in a month trying to teach it lol. Well done sir, I tip my hat to you. 🤘😎
This is the highest quality youtube video I've seen till this day. I've seen it at least 10 times and it's still so interesting to me. I can't believe how hard it must've been to record this in one take. Mad respect to you man.
You have no idea how many times I’ve watched this video and it’s just because it’s really fun too listen to, i haven’t even used any of the tips.
why does this look like an ad you would get randomly on youtube or spotify?
This is way too well shot and not begging for money
@@isetta4083 dunno if we've seen the same ads lol
Davie504 + Rob scallon = perfect slap
@Erga ditano yes

Les Claypool likes this
Ale Kiefer I thought the same thing. Rob should join Primus 0.0
Primus sucks!
HalfBredReviews Dead meme. Even the band hates it.
MAN Where did this meme even come from
Some people like stale memes. I eat garbage.
not gonna lie. you dont even have to play guitar to like this. this video is damn entertaining. been watching for awhile and youve been a huge inspiration on how ive learned. keep it up man. really impressive
Rob ''Claypool'' Scallon.
"Rob's a one-man Primus" was my first thought, indeed.
Claypool woulk kick Robs ass at bass
I just tried this after not picking up an instrument for at _least_ several months. Unless I'm doing it very wrong, this doesn't work well on acoustic guitars. Better on the bass, but the strings were not kind to my fingers. Ow.
On the plus side, I feel weirdly alive. So there's that.
what I do is I play with a hybrid set on guitar that has thicker bass strings, and thinner treble strings. I keep the tension on the bass strings so it doesn't rip my fingers apart.
BRUHHH WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?!
Gunnar Ágústsson Góð spurning.
Gunnar Ágústsson He made a very short how to slap video at NAMM if I remember. Maybe it was popular

Your dad slaps you with his thumb?
Can you imagine if Rob and Primus got together.
My favorite band, and an epic youtuber. Yes

Animals as Leaders has entered the server
My lord.. is that legal.?
Physical education
A Japanese rockstar named "MIYAVI" uses the technique almost exclusively. A lot of his stuff very pop-rock oriented but the man is very talented.
Did you mean: Animals As Leaders?
I don't have money for a guitar and I can't play a good note to save my entire family, but I still clicked like on this. Thx for the general music knowledge, mate.
Still amazing as hell. Keep rockin' in the free world, Rob!

I'm just here watching this video and feel more and more a guitar sucker.
Okay, that was one of the most epic tutorials on RUclips.
I also need those feet-pedaling drums in my life.
Rob you're awesome.
No you should watch thedooo. It discourages me harshly
I remember watching this video some years ago. And as a bass player, this reaaaaaally helped me a lot (overall the first steps). So, I can truly say that this is my favourite video on the internet by far, and so entertaining to watch even if you're not a musician
This is so professional! You are way above the standard RUclips quality. Keep on rolling the way you do!
this video is so entertaining
like its one big song
I was smiling the whole time I was watching
Does anyone else just love the feel of this video? Great camera work and music all while talking and playing the drums
how can 62 people be like "nah i dont like this" after watching this
"I dont like this guy, he's way better then I am. I'm gonna dislike it." -Random guy that disliked
just way too much salt. They can't handle the guitar godliness that is Rob "So-YOU-think-you-know-guitar" Scallon. This guy is just beyond human :D
Mindless Vocalists i guess you're right but its not like he was born with this skill this is the result of countless hours of practicing he is a big inspiration for me to keep practicing thats for sure so i dont get how people cam get butthurt over this he earned it
RegularDude yeah I know, I'm a musician, too. I was just fooling around, he's just absolutely awesome at what he's doing and I would never doubt the amount of time he has put into his music! I'm absolutely impressed everytime he pulls off something like this here :D
must be their duty irrelevant to content
"What instrument do you play?"
Rob: "yes"
That was like a badass musical movie scene
This is undoubtedly one of the best videos on youtube. That's just crazy god damn
you never disappoint! awesome video.
This needs to be a ted talk
This is one of the best youtube videos I've ever seen :vv
Stop talking and record an album of slap.
I'll buy it!
