The boxer "Twister" was named Darren Shahlavi. He was a great martial artist and my friend back in the days of MySpace. He passed away due to a heart attack in his sleep. He was in 300 and I had a conversation with him about his agents getting in touch with Lucas back in the day about the roll of Quinlan Vos because @ the time some of the art work looked like him. He agreed 😊. This is way before any of the stuff Disney has now. My favorite movie that put him on the map was "Bloodmoon." It's a cult classic where he plays the ultimate villain. Staring Gary Daniels. The Star Wars thing was our last conversation in 2009-2010. We had other conversations and i miss those. He was a cool dude 😢
This movie always reminds me of Rocky 4. A foreign boxer challenges a old boxer/Martial artist, who sadly dies in the fight. His protege/friend challenges that foreign boxer and defeats him. Gives a speech about peace and harmony.
My favorite part of this movie is you really start to see Ip Man taking on the role of a Master. He not only teaches his students lessons in this film, but the other Masters as well. Also, the fight choreography seems like it's on another level of intensity compared to the first film even though they get less realistic. Definitely check out Ip Man 3 & 4.
I also like that they continue to make the sequels personal instead of escalating the stakes, which is what most movie franchises do. Granted that'd prolly be a harder feat to pull off in a historical setting.
Darren Shahlavi the Twister is one of the most amazing acts, fun fact that he did train under/with Donnie Yen in real life, and was a good old friend of Donnie, they also worked together decades ago on martial art movies. read it on the news of his death. it's sad that he passed away so young, he's got so much potential. R.I.P
If you haven't taken a look at Donnie and Sammo's past work, I highly HIGHLY recommend "SPL: Sha Po Lang"! They're also against each other in that film, but where their fight scene in "Ip Man" is somewhat graceful, in "SPL" they're just downright brutal.
Sammo is a ultra legend, not only was in this movie he was the fight choreographer for ip man and made 2 of the other best wing chun movies ever with warriors 2 and prodigal son... btw it's a wing chun dummy.
Sooo excited for this one!! :) I know y'all are busy, but I hope that you're both able to continue with the 3rd and 4th. It's great that these films are getting some love.
I'd love a reaction to Ip Man Zero. Sammo Hung participates there as well and we get to know more about Ip Man's origin in terms of Wing Chun (even though I'm not sure how much of it is actually true)
The Ip Man series is loosely based on the true story of Yip Man. There was a British Boxer in Hong Kong challenging Kung fu martial artists but it was Ip Man’s first student that challenged the boxer on a fight not Yip/Ip Man.
what i love about IP MAN and BRUCE LEE is real life, they were respecting every kind of martial arts and fighting style. they given it to the world to learn about it but mostly at that time and now the martial artist all over the world don't like to spread their art to other parts of the world. they both are the people who globalized many different fighting styles.
The tool Ip Man uses to practice Wong Chun is called "Mokjong" (Wooden dummy or Wooden man). It's used in many different styles of Kung Fu, mainly southern styles, such as Wing Chun, Choi Li Fut, Pak Mei and Hung Gar. It has many variations in it's designs depending on the martial art's aplications.
Historically it was customary for different fighting styles to test against each other. So this was not strange for the Boxer to test Kungfu styles. In Hong Kong they trained on the roofs and fights were held between different schools and styles. Ip mans first pupil in this movie was an undefeated rooftop legend in Hong Kong (think he has like 60plus wins to his name).
As a woman, I too want to see more women fighter in movies like this :D Though fortunately, this one seems to be the exception rather than the norm with chinese movies. And not to forget, that Wing Chun style itself was created by a woman! There was actually an old movie about that titled Wing Chun, starring Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen.
Hongkong cinema has had a wide variety of female fighters, unfortunately Hongkong's movie industry is in decline since China got hold of the city (since 1997). The number of movies in general and especially action / martial arts movies went down dramatically and with it female lead action movies. If you want to see more woman fighters you have to go back to the 80s and 90s - the golden age. You'll find plenty there, and they kick ass so hard, modern Hollywood (still) doesn't get even close in comparison.
It was super fun watching your last reaction video and it's super fun watching this as well!! I just wanted to say the reason why Sammo Hung is referred to as the 'action director' and not stunt coordinator/choreographer, is because he's actually directing all the action scenes! In Hong Kong, action directors are in charge of choreography, framing the scene, and editing the fight sequences!
Fun Facts: • Donnie was a breakdancer in his younger years • The actor who plays Sammo’s student in the alleyway also played a younger version of Ip Man in The Legend is Born: Ip Man
Love you guys' reaction to Ip Man He was the one martial artist that actually inspired me to get interested in self-defense, primarily for the uniqueness of the style and the values brought along with it. Glad you guys enjoyed his character!
those old masters ip fights in the table scene are like legends of the 70s martial arts cinema scene. my main man lo meng, love him hes the one doing the squinting. The training thing is often called the wooden man
The wooden dummy is called that; a wooden dummy for practicing the Wing Chun moves. Wing Chun is actually founded by a Buddhist nun and named after one of her top students who used the martial arts style to ward off a guy who wanted to marry her. Also, there's various distinct styles of Wing Chun but the concept still remain the same which is simplicity and using the least number of moves to achieve maximum result. There's other principles as well within the concept but that's the general gist. Fun fact, Robert Downey Jr is a known Wing Chun practitioner for a long time and he credits the martial art as one of the main reasons he was able to overcome his known addiction issues.
Recommend SPL kill zone(sammo hung played the villain btw) and Flash point. Real great action movie with Donnie yen as the lead, focuses on cop vs triad and the fights involve a lot more modern martial arts like MMA, the story is so damn good either
I'm glad you enjoyed this movie as well. Allow me to bring up the historicity of this movie based on my own knowledge. Once again, similar in structure to the first Ip Man movie, the first act of the movie is rooted heavily in historical fact, while the 2nd act reflected the sentiments of the period but none of the events were real. Leung, the first student, is Wong Shun Leung. Wong Shun Leung is known in the Hong Kong martial arts community as one of the greatest street fighters and finest martial artist to have lived and fought in Hong Kong. As Ip Man's most senior student, he was in fact Bruce Lee's primary trainer. By the time Bruce Lee joined Ip Man's school, Ip Man was already very old and wasn't in the best of health. And so, Ip Man assigned Wong Shun Leung to train Bruce Lee. According to Bruce Lee's writings, Wong Shun Leung was the single greatest influence that shaped his philosophy when it comes to the Martial Arts. Ip Man was subject to hazing by other Martial Arts clubs and societies and came out the other end respected by the other masters, this much is historical. Wing Chun and Hung Gar kung fu has had a long rivalry within Hong Kong's martial arts community, this much is also true, though it is likely anachronistic that Ip Man's student fought gang wars with students from Hung Gar schools, even though these gang wars did happen frequently in that time. Disputes between Martial Arts schools were frequently settled in duels behind closed doors, frequently on roof tops. Once again, Donnie Yen's acting was coached by Ip Chun, the son of Ip Man, to replicate the historical Ip Man's mannerisms, from how he held his cigarette, to how he would sit at the roof top to smoke, to how sheepishly shy he is when it comes to collecting fees from his students. All that was as historical as it gets from the sons of Ip Man, from the memories of Ip Chun and Ip Ching themselves. During post World War 2 British Hong Kong, the government was very corrupt. The Governor was chosen by the parliament in London and appointed by the Queen, and the Police Commissioners was chosen by the British Governors. The Executive and Legislative Council was completely appointed by the British Governor, and it was only with the looming handover to China in 1997, that the British give the Hong Kongers elections in 1985 and 1991. Before that, Hong Kongers had no say in their government, and had little to no trust in their government and their police. You'll find many Hong Kong TV shows depicting British leadership (especially British Police Captains and Commissioners) very poorly in the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s. This led to plenty of secret societies being formed, and street justice being meted out within communities rather than subject themselves to the legal process and the mercy of an uncaring government that ruled the people rather than represent them. It was in these conditions that Martial Arts schools became a core part of the Hong Kong underworld. With limited access to (as well as a cultural disdain for) guns, street justice was enacted with fists and melee weapons. Hong Kong Triads were very powerful when the British were in charge, and this remained true until surprisingly recently.
Shoutout to Roxy's observations. I've seen this and the first movie a whole bunch of times, and she just drops something (in both) that I completely missed. Great eye. More of her, please!
as a asian person, i'm so happy to see y'all watch this; and see our diffrent cultures. i hope you'll see the other matial arts that we asians have!!! thank you so much!!.
Quan is Ip Man best friend . The closest to being his brother . Ip Man blame himself for not being there when Quan was shot and is blaming himself for what happened to him 😢
General Miura in ip man 1 was respectful of ipman and chinese martial arts in general, he was a true warrior, the guy who shot ip man at the end was the equivalent of short pants here.
And with Wong Fei Hong being mentioned at the end of this movie, you two might as well go ahead and check out Jet Li in Once Upon a Time in China. One of his most Iconic characters he's portrayed.
I don’t know how true this is but, don’t shoot the messenger. At a time when monks were being hunted and killed in China, 5 monks that were masters of different styles came together and trained a person in secret and her name was Wing Chun. She was able to keep the art safe because nobody expected a woman to know as they were forbidden to learn martial arts back then. 🤔 Well, I can see that it is very based on defending one’s self against a stronger opponent. The stance itself kinda shows. Both palms ✋are open and centered to protect her vitals and her strikes are short and fast with vertical fists. It’s fascinating. 🧐 Story makes sense to me.
@@roxystriar I would highly recommend you do reaction on HK 2002 “Infernal Affairs”, which was remade in 2006 in US “The Departed”. Ensure you don’t watch the China version which had the worst ending. Take care and stay safe and healthy too.
Oh, man, I can't wait to see y'all react to the third and fourth movies! I've been watching your reaction to the first movie, and I loved it very much!
This is one of the reasons why Bruce Lee changed & challenged the traditional way. Chinese martial arts is techniques & some power, but not the same as boxing. Bruce changed his regime of eating & working out to better help himself in fights. Western culture took over a lot of China as well.
12:30 Donnie Yen is actually a really good dancer! His second movie was about a teenager that loved kung fu AND dancing :D he is just full of talent :3
the fact that Sammo Hung used to act as goofy characters in the old days is interesting, as he got older he became an actor that gets strong and scary character to act, the complete 180 is mind boggling
8:46 The reason Ipman blames himself is because his friend Quan helped him and his family escape from the Japanese, so in the Japanese eyes he's a fugitive. Most likely Quan had to go back to Fo Shan for his son and thats when he was shot in the beginning of the movie.
"Can babies just like be outside that quickly?" Man I would hope so, considering the majority of human births throughout history happened in what is the modern equivalent to a tent.
Grandmaster Yip Man did not actually fight any British boxing champion. In real life, it was actually Yip Man's student, Wong Shun Leung ("Wong Leung" in the movie), who fought a 240 lbs Russian (not British) boxer in Hong Kong. Wong Shun Leung won that fight by KO in three punches.
I think the boxer could have played a perfect Agent Smith. Yes, you can have your baby outside at that time 😂. Two pediatricians told me that's just a thing people just continue to say with nothing that backs it up.
In terms of women doing martial arts: Ip Man is a master of Wing Chun Kung fu. "Wing Chun" is said to be a woman's name because legend says that it was created by a Shaolin nun. She taught a girl named Wing Chun from a village who was supposed to be wed to a warlord and challenged him to fight; if she won then they would not wed and her village would be safe. She won. That is the birth of the style. Also, Donnie Yen's mother is a Grandmaster of Eagle Claw Kung fu.
I like how western boxing was presented in this movie. Very respected, many fighting games also give it this respect. Modern MMA is the closest examples we have of the best real fighting styles but, ultimately it's still far from no rules and Chinese styles have yet to be incorporated fully (where-as SA, NA, EU, and much of Asian styles are steadily melding together).
The flow of the films is about even with the pride in styles, there is a pride in culture that supercedes all. Ip Man has reached the pinnacle of his style where he does not fight for or teach the style for his own glory, nor for style superiority...he fights because he has to and for the honor of others. Due to this, Ip Man has no issues with instantly stepping up when the culture and dignity of the Chinese is insulted.
By the way, I’ve heard the reason why they teach you to yell when you strike in martial arts is because it forces you to breathe. Sometimes people can get carried away and forget to breathe properly and they’ll get winded quickly if they do that, so by learning to yell or make noise when you strike it forces you to breathe continuously. I’m no martial artist but I’ve heard that many times from different people and it makes sense.

Ip man 2 was pretty amazing and the final battle showing the importance of respecting each other’s cultures and fighting style.

Can't wait for the 3rd reaction.. love ur after the show commentary 😊
I think the boxer could have played a perfect Agent Smith. Yes, you can have your baby outside at that time 😂. Two pediatricians told me that's just a thing people just continue to say with nothing that backs it up.
keep it going, shoutout to roxy and giving the Ip saga a whirl
In terms of women doing martial arts: Ip Man is a master of Wing Chun Kung fu. "Wing Chun" is said to be a woman's name because legend says that it was created by a Shaolin nun. She taught a girl named Wing Chun from a village who was supposed to be wed to a warlord and challenged him to fight; if she won then they would not wed and her village would be safe. She won. That is the birth of the style.
Also, Donnie Yen's mother is a Grandmaster of Eagle Claw Kung fu.
That wooden structure Ip Man was practicing with in the beginning is called Mok Yan Jong (Wooden Man Statue / Dummy in Cantonese)
I waited for this i love you too as duo and i love all ip man movies keep it up u guys are awesome i subbed you both
Never saw this movie. It was very interesting. Thanks for the watch along. This was awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
Love that Roxy was so into this emotionally she kept hanging onto Jon
Lmao I couldn’t get through it alone!
Everyone wants to learn Wing Chun after they watch this movie haha
whoohoo! really fun to rewatch this movie through both of your eyes
love you guys reaction and analysis, ip man3 please!!!
Love these reacts with Roxie. Hope y'all keep doing kungfu movies to be honest. Also love IP Man 2 maybe even more that IP 1.
Great reaction hope to see you guys do ip man 3
I hope you make reactions too on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I love your duo and also with the "ring the bell... 🎶🎶" girl.
I think Ip Man 2 was the best out of the series, mate...Greetings from New Zealand.
You two's have two more Ip Man movies of Donnie yen to finish off ❤
We appreciate your effort and hard work. Bless you all.
I like how he said I hope he fights Rocky next movie, well without spoiling he was close, can't wait for the next reaction.
Donnie yen is actually a really good dancer
25:32 Roxy Striar. Striving not to strive as make the effort to not have self interest,, personal goals, social placement, money at the expense of people override being a descent human being to fellow humans,, was my basic impression.-Erne Moore Jr
Wow, can't wait to see more of Ip Man 3 and 4.
I enjoyed the fast pacing and fights in this one, although the villain is kind of a cartoon character. Definitely feels like Rocky 4.
It gets more "cartoony" after this one imo.
FUDGE. This movie is great, this reaction is great. THIS VIDEO IS GREAT!!❤ much love reel rejects c: also really hope you guys continue this series of movies!!

The Ip Man school is still active today. I was there at the school back in 2020. Located in Hong Kong
