I know from your other videos you guys like Mel Brooks, so you NEED to watch "Silent Movie" (that really is the name) I personally think it's his best. All I will say about it is, it is a silent movie about making a silent movie. I would also highly recommend his version of "To Be or Not To Be" (it's actually a remake so make sure it's his) and also "High Anxiety" where he spoofs Hitchcock. edit: I forgot to say, if you get your hand on the BluRay of "High Anxiety" you can take a test during the movie to find out "If you're very, very nervous" (when you watch the movie you'll get that). Now that I think about it, you taking that test would make a great, second for that movie, video too.

Its true .. but I got fed up with the Chinese play on nationality in later movies. Yes the Japanese committed unforgivable war crimes (honestly an underground fighting ring for rice is probably less cruel than was actually happening ) so this seemed perfectly justified. But they just force this theme time and time again ... ( i know Chinese people had to face incredibly adversity in Hong Kong and in USA) but in later movies its just corrupt racist policeman, corrupt incredibly racist marine sergeant ... I think this just sells in China but I get quickly fed up with it . But I still enjoyed all of the ip man movies .. even his origin story without donnie yen.
This period of Chinese history gets overlooked a lot! The Japanese occupation of China was a very dark part of history for both countries, a few movies like this and Jet Lee's Fist of Legend cover it but I would love a biopic about this time period. Also about the opening, marital artists back then would travel around and fight other schools and masters to prove themselves, some for fame others for the love of martial arts
This era of Chinese history is a pretty common setting for Chinese films. It's an interesting period, but because of censorship in China these movies can only ever serve as nationalistic propaganda. Ip Man's a great movie, but it's also a huge "CHINA NUMBER ONE" propaganda flick.
I think the western world needs a "Chinese Schindler's List". A gritty, realistic, unapologetic portrayal of this time. We hear about the Rape of Nanking in school, but I think it would do posterity good to get something that really hammers home the atrocities, and the spirit of the people who survived and resisted.
@@peacemaster8117what the ? r u talking about? It's a history of national humiliation and i can't thina any other way to make a movie other than showing that this nation has faith and power. What do you want? A movie of warm welcome to those inhuman intruders? It's not time for your stupid Sinophobia.
Also fun fact in these movies. If you watch interviews with stunt people that work on these they will tell you that they are in fact getting hit even if the hits aren't at full force doing a take over and over will make you want to get the take right on the first try. Made me think of this when you said at 6:29 "looks like he really got hit"
Donnie Yen studied wing chun for the first time just to make this film, and learned it so well in just a couple of months that longtime practitioners wondered how many years he'd been practicing.
The Ip Man series are PHENOMENAL. I give them a rewatch every so often. They're my favorite "actual" martial arts movies. Kung Fu Hustle still holds the crown for comedic martial arts movie for me.
This movie hits different when you do martial arts. Ip man is doing Wing Chun and the General is using Karate. Seeing the styles clash is one of the coolest parts of the movie.
I believe this is THE BEST Martial Arts movie I have ever seen. When Ip Man unleashes in the 1 v 10 I lost my $*$*#( everything. If you ever watch again - notice.... no one gets a hit in on him until the General at very end. Can't wait for your reaction to the second!
The first time I have seen that movie it was long before it was released in my country. We got the movie from a familie friend that lived in the city where Ip man was born and he is still as a hero over there. She brought the movie with her when she moved to our country. Realy cool to have someone watching it with you that has grown up with the history of the man.
In the "old days" Chinese people would have their own family branch of martial arts and some would go around and beat other schools to prove that their style is the strongest. It was a very strange time.
Fun fact: The actor who plays the older brother actually comes back to play another character in a spinoff movie Master Z which takes place after Ip Man 3. Also the henchman in 20:19 actually played Yip Man himself in other movies centered around the man made by a completely different team. The first being The Legend is Born: Ip Man and Ip Man: Kung Fu Master
Im so excited to see what you guys think about these films, every single one has so much individual emotional impact that it makes not only the series amazing but each movie has the ability to stand on its own! I hope you guys continue!
The Hong Kong style of cutting fight scenes is very different to the standard Hollywood style. You get to see the shots land and linger on the effects. That's why it feels so much more visceral. Would dig to see you guys react to more of the series, and on a personal note... I think Oceans 11 is a perfect movie.
This is one of my absolute favorite films, and you guys touched on all the major reasons in this reaction. So often in action movies people are always beating each other up but no one ever gets beaten up, if that makes sense? And while that’s definitely the correct move for a lot of films, showing the impact and the injuries so convincingly here adds to the overall pathos brought to every element of this production that makes it so memorable in the canon of martial arts films.
Honestly, the analysis and discussions you guys make, makes me so happy! I love how you two dudes notice that for someone as Wise, kind and understanding as Master Ip, seeing him fight like a brute is really saddening to see. That with each fight that goes on, it just gets more dirtier every time. In other moments similar to this, you can really feel how it can hurt for a usually peaceful and gentle character, being forced and fueled with blind rage and violence for the first time. Love listening to you both!
Ip Man is one of my favorite movies, last week I just rewatched it for the first time in a while. I'm super happy to see you guys enjoying it! It has my favorite fight choreography of any movie, I had never thought about this until you mentioned it but I really like how they make every hit look like it hurts.
The Ip Man movies are all absolutely incredible. They lean hard into reminding you that he was a man before he was a martial artist, much like in this film, and they carry a lot more weight because of it.
I also just remembered this somewhat decent Donnie Yen film, The Ice Man: Time Traveler I think it was called, which was him playing a Ming Dynasty warrior finding himself in the modern day.
Something my dad and I picked up on is he always normally has open hands in his neutral positions, you can tell when his emotions come into play when his fists are closed up when he's not fighting
The part where the kid comes out in the beginning interrupting the fight was translated sooooo poorly, what the kid actually said was "Mum said if you don't start taking this seriously then everything is going to be broken by the end of it" not "if you start fighting everything will be broken" damn what a shame
I dont know how you guys do it. Laughing through out the movie. I was freaking emotional and invested in this movie. This was a heavy one. Talks about family retalitonships, war, struggle of the people and survival.
The sequels are good, but this one is by far the best. You really see how Wing Chun is designed for economy of movement, and is intended to empower anyone, regardless of gender or size. My all time fave Donnie Yen movie (maybe my favorite wushu film ever) is Iron Monkey. You gotta see it!
Ip man is one of the most profound masters of wing Chun in history, he was the first master of Bruce Lee until his second form and he was also the master of Duncan Leung. Who finished under ip man and then later finished teaching bruce lee the wing chun system
Such an amazing person and movie.. Can you imagine that those rapid punches Master Ip does are actually held back or the camera isn’t able to register them 😅
@@kuromiLayfe Dude. This is a movie set. All movies are shot with ARI and Sony Red state of the art gigantic cameras. Point is, Donnie Yen didn’t have to hold back because any Hollywood level movie camera can capture any speed of human movement

Y'all absolutely need to watch the rest of the series. There's 5 total, Ip man 1-4, and a spin off after 3. Admittedly varying in quality but still pretty fun.
One reason you "feel" the fight impact is Sammo Hung was the fight choreographer. He's Jackie Chan's "Big Brother" and he plays a major character in Ip Man 2. Sammo's own movies that hes directed and starred in often have this feel... where the imacts really look like the stunt men went to the hospital. Jackie was better at stunts, but Sammo's chorepgraphy was godlike.
I remember when I randomly selected this movie by it's title, since I thought it was about a hacker and was in the mood for one of the unrealistic hacker movies. Well it wasn't at all what I expected, but it didn't disappoint lol.
What people don't really know is... Ip Man is a legend and he's actually pretty high in the social life in Foshan itself. He comes from an actually pretty well to do family and was sent to Hong Kong in the early 1900s to study which he did for about 4-6 years and returned to Foshan and became a police officer. He was soo good at his job that he soon started teaching some of his mates in Wing Chun and then got to meet his wife, Cheung Wing-sing who was part of the ex-Qing aristocrat bloodline and was even rumoured to be the daughter of then Foshan mayor thus the big mansion Ip Man has in the movies. And yes, Ip Man didn't really take in any students whilst he was in Foshan and only took students during the 1950s when he was in Hong Kong to feed himself, his sons and allegedly his opium addiction. Also, Wing Chun is unlike the other martial arts shown. Wing Chun in particular is a type of Southern-style martial arts that focuses on using defense as an offense and rotating strikes by first luring an attack and switch it into offensive capabilities. That's why you see how most of the fight scenes in the whole Ip Man series seldom have Ip Man/Donnie Yen starting the fight but it's mostly him standing still, letting people close in, lock them in place and start intercepting strikes then nullifying it and dishing out strikes himself in extreme close proximity. That's Wing Chun in general. Also the pole scene in the factory, completely legit. In Wing Chun, there's this weapon technique that's called the "Luk Dim Bun Kwan"/Six & Half Point Pole is a technique that trains users in using an 8-12ft pole into great proficiency and was often paired with long spears thus the way Ip Man/Donnie Yen used in the movie, highly accurate.
IM SO HAPPY you're watching this. Donnie yen is so underrated, Try watching Flashpoint with him in it among SO many others, he directs, does choreography, acts. He is amazing. Ip man is one of my favorite movies let alone with him in it. Im so happy you did this. You guys are the best! (btw the others ones aren't as good but still good action flicks.
"Grounded" is a good word for this movie, showing thrilling action, but also the physical and moral trauma and destruction of the occupation and the peoples struggles to survive.
When Jin and his gang came to challenge all the masters before starting a school instead of just starting a school, this action makes much more sense once you watch the second film.
Answering your question at 5:52 his family comes from old money, he lived a very wealthy life until WW2 Japanese takeover. 13:20 The style that the Japanese military people were using durives from basic Shotokan Karate. 21:27 the style of Kung Fu IP Man is using was formulated by a woman, graceful, finess, and knowing men are physically stronger than women by default.
So for what I've been told by a friend whose spent more than 20 years studying kung fu, this movie demonstrates martial arts very well and as for Donnie Yen, his mother is an master and teaches in Boston, so he's also an excellent martial artist
I don't know if you'll go back to see this comment, but I recently found out that Ip Man's eldest son that you see here in this movie is Ip Chun, the master who taught Donnie Yen martial arts.
Im glad you guys caught that its tragic to see Ip Man fight so furiously against the 10 masters. Most people just see it as how badass he is and overlook that.
You probably didn't get the subtlety in the fight scene where IP man fought with a feather. In French a feather is called a "plume" but that word also mean literally an ink Quill. A full representation of what is mightier: a sword or a pen.😂😂😂😂
Being a Korean film, this film is the exemplar of the Confucian virtue. Ip Man is the stoic and calm individual who does not use his power until required, and stays out of trouble until the point where things are balanced against the poeple. The story is very similar to the tale of Yu Sun Sin in broad points.
In addition to the four Donnie Yen Ip Man films, I also enjoy "The Legend Is Born: Ip Man" and "Ip Man: The Final Fight". The former is when Man is yet to be married and has a cameo from Ip Chun, Man's son; and the latter I just prefer over Ip Man 4.
Another modern classic from Donnie Yen was Sha Po Lang or Killzone here in the US. My favorite and introduction to him was a movie called Iron Monkey originally from 93 or so but got a release over here in the US thanks to Tarantino in 01.
I had the honor of being taught by a sifu who was taught by a direct student of Ip Man. The first thing you are taught is that Wing Chun (no matter the spelling in western letters) is NOT a martial art for sports events or fair fights. It's for the defense against a small number of aggressive, overconfident attackers. If you can avoid a fight, always seek to avoid it at all costs. You only fight when you have no other choice. But if you fight, you fight to take out opponents as efficiently as possible and that includes attacking weak points like joints, solar plexus, throat, eyes, ears, groin. No attacks are off-limits which is quite the opposite of regulated sports events with fair play rules. The chain punch is an extremely fast but relatively weak individual punch that aims at overwhelming the defense, and keeping the opponent disoriented for long enough to land a serious blow at one of the weak points. What was not shown here because it doesn't really lend itself to movie scenes is the sticking touch. The forward limb is trained to make contact with the enemy's limb and sense the direction of pressure where the enemy is directing the force of his attack. This sticking touch is trained constantly from the 2nd form onward in the Chi Sao sparring maneuver. You teach your muscles to automatically react with the correct counter as applies to the direction of the force from the limb. There's little to no active thinking, simply reacting. When Wing Chun martial artists compete in sports events they often fail miserably because they aren't allowed to go all out on their sparring partners with their limited target options. This movie took quite a few 'artistic licenses' with the moves shown. Many were made up. However, the wooden dummy training form is a legitimate form in Wing Chun. It trains the practitioner to tolerate pain, as they train for several hours a day hitting the hardwood dummy full force with elbows, shins, forearms, fists, instep, wrists, etc. This form was the point at which Ip Man refused to continue to train Bruce Lee further. Lee was taught the basics of the 3rd form (wooden dummy form), but not the intricacies. He left Hong Kong and created Jeet Kune-Do with many forms from other martial arts styles instead. Until his death Ip Man continued to refuse to train Bruce Lee in the 3rd form, nor the weapons form.
The reason this movie, and many asian martial arts movies, feel more impactful in their fight scenes is because they are. In American movies, the camera often cuts right before the hit or the lack of connection is hidden through different angles, but not in movies like with Bruce Lee, Samo Hung, and Jackie Chan. Jackie has talked about it a lot in interviews, but the reason these stuntmen take these hits is because one, like you said, it makes a noticeable difference, and two, if they don’t, there is someone else waiting in line for that spot who will take the hit. So either you are willing to suffer for your art, or you’re replaced by someone who is.
I'm surprised you guys both hadn't seen this. We got to watch this and the second IP man in my Mandarin class. I don't know Mandarin at all, but I do love Donnie Yen
Nice reaction video as always, as the Ip Man movies are great. Now please react to The Karate Kid (2010) it will give you many views because the fan base is HUGE. Please also react to the deleted scene if you will. Thank you!
@@UbiMortus I don't think you understood the meaning of "alive". Fearless strikes the perfect balance between action and story, in my opinion. Yip Man is too story driven to my taste.
Aside from the obvious action, the thing that always sticks out to me about all of the Ip Man series, is it sticks to that asian movie format of having a great morale story underpinning it all. Easily a top tier movie, as is the full series... which of course you should both do ;) ;)
I dont know if you guys have also watched The Grand Master directed by Wong Kar-wai, it's a movie about all the masters of Chinese martial art including IP Man. It's a visual masterpiece.
There’s a pretty dark deleted scene where after the final fight, the angry people beat the translator to death. Because they don’t how what happened and thought he is a traitor.
Do it. We want the Sequels! I dont know why, but this film is kicking me so hard. I really cry every time when the younger brother gets to know that his brother is dead. Sammo's own movies that hes directed and starred in often have this feel... where the imacts really look like the stunt men went to the hospital. Jackie was better at stunts, but Sammo's chorepgraphy was godlike.
you guys should watch Hero (2002), Quentin Tarantino personally released the movie in US with Miramax.
2:40 so this is how the Coolie in Kung Fu Hustle started his career
Easily one of my top 10 martial arts movies! Great reaction bros!
Who's here waiting for them to watch IP Man 2, 3 and 4?
The super saiyan karate student fight is one of the best things I've ever seen. And I love the Raid.
16:05 - tbh, one of the finest martial arts choreography in cinema like 4 ever 👀 🐐
I had a BLAST watching this with your reactions👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 apart 2 let’s go!
How come I found you guys reaction so late! Love your reaction guys!
It’s never too late!
I WANT your reactions to ALL of them! Its gonna be wild!!
Requesting for sequels, love your reactions guys! ❤
Man love your reactions keep em coming subbed 🎉
I can't believe I have to say this to an adult but the w in sword is silent.
bro yess we need more ip man the whole movie series itself is amazing
In addition to the four Donnie Yen Ip Man films, I also enjoy "The Legend Is Born: Ip Man" and "Ip Man: The Final Fight". The former is when Man is yet to be married and has a cameo from Ip Chun, Man's son; and the latter I just prefer over Ip Man 4.
17:15 What killed it for me was that he said "I'm a Chinese man" in Japanese. It's so... It's a simple detail, but man, it hit me hard.
Another modern classic from Donnie Yen was Sha Po Lang or Killzone here in the US. My favorite and introduction to him was a movie called Iron Monkey originally from 93 or so but got a release over here in the US thanks to Tarantino in 01.
Ip man 2 is amazing.
Also hot shots part deaux.
What makes this movie special is because it's based on a true story, of a teacher of bruce lee, that saved china that time from japan
Please do the sequels as well! They deserve a watch for sure!
Thank you!
Guys, watch the movie Fearless with Jet Li, in the same vein as Ip Man, same style, similar thematic, but in my opinion much better, much more alive.
The point of IP Man movie is not to be 'alive', but to tell a story. Fearless, while tackling a similar narrative, rests too much on action.
@@UbiMortus I don't think you understood the meaning of "alive". Fearless strikes the perfect balance between action and story, in my opinion. Yip Man is too story driven to my taste.
@@SisyphusOfSodom then we are on opposing sides. Fite me!
@@UbiMortus They're both silly corny action movies, Fearless just does a better job with both the action and the corny melodrama.
Chinese cinema always gets you thinking. Their Kung Fu is never frivolous.
You guys are going to love all 4 ip man movies.
Aside from the obvious action, the thing that always sticks out to me about all of the Ip Man series, is it sticks to that asian movie format of having a great morale story underpinning it all.
Easily a top tier movie, as is the full series... which of course you should both do ;) ;)
love these movies. Still waiting on a Speed Racer reacts. I know haven't heard from me in a bit but I'M BACK BABY!!!!
Love this movie and your guys' reaction, so when's number 2?
I dont know if you guys have also watched The Grand Master directed by Wong Kar-wai, it's a movie about all the masters of Chinese martial art including IP Man. It's a visual masterpiece.
There’s a pretty dark deleted scene where after the final fight, the angry people beat the translator to death. Because they don’t how what happened and thought he is a traitor.
Do it. We want the Sequels! I dont know why, but this film is kicking me so hard. I really cry every time when the younger brother gets to know that his brother is dead. Im effing 1,90 m and normally never cry, but Im a younger brother and I love my Brother so much. It really hurts me every time.
You got my sub bros.
Yes! Do the sequels. Just more Ip Man/Donnie Yen fighting goodness. I love your reactions.
