excellent video i love it! i speak chinese, the english subtitle of the movie at 26:09 are wrong, ip man actually said wash his own face instead of hers lol.
Kids (I'm 67 so I can call you that) Japan invaded China (Manchuria to be precise) in 1931 and set up a puppet state under the last then deposed Emperor of China. Also in the 1920's and 30's various warlords fought for control of the nation. In the mid 30's Japan struck out of Manchuria seeking to take over much or all of China for it's raw materials. It was that move in 1937 that set the table for Pearl Harbor. After the "Rape of Nanjing" (Nanking in old style) where the Japanese caused at LEAST 200,000 deaths and which was caught on film) American out rage to the embargo of shipping on oil, steel, and metals to Japan..
What is real… his name is real and he moved to Hong Kong. But basically everything else is artistic licence. Every fighting hero from china follows the exact same story. Good fighter is humble until he has to fight foreigner. It was originally the Japanese, then the English then whoever. They repeated the story so much that the previous hero, Wong Fei Hung is in the Guinness book as being most depicted onscreen. They recycled the story line again but this time with Ip Man and it became a massive international hit so now the new hero is Ip man. The story is popular, however, because it was based on a real life martial artist who fought the Japanese, tournament style. He was ultimately poisoned during his last match but his legend lives on in his school that still exists today. Obviously, there are movies made about this as well. The best might be Jet Li’s “Fearless” Fun fact: ip man real son, Ip Chun, the character of the little kid in this movie, was in “Ip Man: the legend is born” as the old drug store manager. He was old when he made the movie, 80’s or 90’s but still moved well.
IP man is actually a real life person. He was actually Bruce lee's master and it was from that style Bruce Lee got the inspiration to create his own style, Jeet Kun Do. But there was actually some fiction added to the story in this movie. The Japan china war part is real tho
Japanese occupation and german Nazi occupation… the brutality, the horror… it was horrific. 🤧 check the historical mov like Rape of Nanking, Comfort Women documentary… 😭 its more than soldier killing soldiers
To answer your question, the history is very real. The Japanese murdered around 6,000,000 people. My grandmother came from a good family and remembers the day the Japanese occupied their home. A servant saved her life by ushering her out of the house while the Japanese were searching. The family subsequently fled to the U.K.
For historical perspective, the Japanese invasion was the first conflict in WW2, taking most of North East China and moving down south. Because Fo Shan is the Southern most part of China, they had already known about Japanese atrocities, such as the Nanking massacre, which occurred about a year before events depicted in Ip Man. If you guys are interested in watching more on this period, there are a few that I'd recommend. "Devils on the Doorstep" is an amazing dark comedy about the Japanese occupation and how it affects a village of simple peasants. "The Eight Hundred" depicts true events of a group of a few hundred men (800 was an exaggerated number) defending a warehouse in Shanghai during the most destructive battle in China and it is an amazing war movie. Finally there's "City of Life and Death", which is harrowing tale depicting the "Rape of Nanking", shot in B&W in the style of Schindlers List and is an unflinching look at one of the darkest moments of WW2.
The movie actually takes some creative liberties and is a bit propaganda as Ip Man never fought the Japanese during that time. The reason he left Foshan for Hong Kong was he was a member of the Kuomitang (Chinese nationalist party) during the Japanese-Sino war which where poliical rivals to the Chinese Communist party that won. China being in the state its in. They of course couldnt depict the CCP as the bad guys and swap them for the Japanese instead.
@@LunaticReason yes the film is almost completely fictional, but I’d say it does so mirroring Bruce Lee’s movies. This is repeated again in the sequels.
He never fought the Japanese but he was injured trying to defend himself and family. Majority of it was a bit fictional but the person ip man was real and had to fight twice for his life before he met Bruce Lee.
@@LunaticReason The funny part is ( historical btw) , the KMT general threaten the president of the ROC chiang kai shek to sign a truce with the communist to fight against the Japanese invasion and form the 2nd United front. Most of the KMT soldiers see the Japanese as the threat rather than a bunch of peasants.
I always love the "Traitor" character 9 times out 10 theyre filling a position that if it didnt exist in the first place would make life much worse in general. He's literally the only communication bridge between Japanese and Chinese language. He's also doing a job he hates but pretends loyalty to japan to not also be punished. He was loyal to china to the very end but *his family* needed him more than his nationality, He always did the right thing. Also the general had honor worthy of respect, he would've let lin live if he didnt spit blood in his face.
Right? The dude really is just translating. He's not lying to the Chinese people, he's translating what the Japanese are offering. They choose to go fight for rice themselves, knowing full-well that entering duels have a risk of injury or maybe even death. The only times he's deviating from actual translations are to either hide the "disrespect" Ip Man is showing in order to protect him, or when he's lying to the Japanese.
This is one of the greatest martial arts films ever made. While they did embellish some of the details, a lot of the film's plot was based on true events. Ip Man was a real person. He trained famous action star Bruce Lee in Wing Chun. Japan did invade and occupy parts of China and were absolutely brutal to the local Chinese people. Definitely check out the rest of the movies in the series Ip Man 2, 3, and 4 if you like this film. They're all really good, even though they get more and more fantastical/less based on true events, and Donnie Yen is fantastic in all of them.
For a bit of historical content, this movie starts in 1935 and goes until 1938. The movie plays during the Second Sino-Japanese War that started in 1937, so yes two years before ww2. Now what I feel like is often overlooked in history lessons especially talking about ww2, are The horrific acts that are committed by the Japanese army in occupied territories. The sacking of the then capital Nanking is literally known as the ”Rape of Nanking“. Chinese casualties made up about 1/3 of overall deaths in the war, something that i feel is often overlooked
i’m glad you watched this in the original language. it gives more impact when ip man was defiant of general miura, but there was a language barrier, and li was trying to diffuse the situation by giving the general a different translation.
I watched both and found no difference in the impact .... now if I actually understood the language then maybe ....but nah ..all that is an illusion...the Story's impact doesn't change unless you speak the Native language...because you then understand the tone...
'Fearless' is definitely one of Jet Li's best. Would love to see you guys watch this too. As for old school martial arts movies with no choreography, just real martial artists fighting with a variety of weaponry, I'd recommend 'Shaolin Temple' - Jet Li's first movie. Of course, if you go on a Jet Li binge, then 'Fist of Legend' (the remake of Bruce Lee's) is also fantastic.
As funny as it may sound, these movies were my childhood. My dad and I were really into kung fu and martial arts movies and watched them all the time. He introduced me to a lot of these movies. I sorta have a clear memory of watching the second IP Man with him. Martial arts and horror movies were our thing, still kinda is. After this series, you should really check out the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy. Those movies have great sword fights and even greater story telling
It's not a trilogy anymore, since 2 more RK movies came out in 2021. The fight scenes in the RK movies are choreographed by Donnie Yen's mentee, Kenji Tanigaki, who's worked with him since the late 90s.
I remember stumbling upon this bad boy on Netflix one day. Was just in a mood to watch something and I went to it completely blind. Blew my fucking mind. I immediately had to share it with everyone, and forced pretty much everyone I knew to watch it with me.
@@zuriyel5368 yeah those are the ones I was talking about. I’ve seen all the films but Netflix only seems to have The Beginning, the original 2012 one and the Final. That’s why I said trilogy :P
Donnie Yen name is stapled to martial arts movie. So every director wants him to represent a Chinese aspect making him wearing traditional chinese clothing. He also speaks about how Chinene people in Hollywood used to be name Shang or Chang in every movie. That's why in John Wick 4 he dressed like a boss and not named "Shang" or "Chang".
23:55 This scene is terrifying awesome and really powerful. Throughout the entirety of the movie so far we've seen Ip Man fight in a mostly passive way. Using his opponents energy against them and fighting to win with the minimum of force applied in return. A very controlled and disciplined martial artist. This scene is the first time we see him fighting to hurt his opponents, to actually inflict damage and beat them up. The way its portrayed in the choreography of the fight is what makes this movie a cut above others in my opinion. Not only is there a story, but the fighting style is even used to portray the characters emotion. Amazing, yet terrifying. You can feel how angry he is.
@@patinho5589that's what happens when you watch your fellow countryman get gunned down for no reason. It makes your blood boil, and if you can do something about it, you go full blown Ip Man on them
Fun Fact: Donnie Yen only trained in Wing-Chun for 6 months before filming. Proof that Donnie Yen is one of the greatest martial artists of our time.😍😖
31:07 If you look back closely at the start of the scene, Ip Man did show them how to defend themselves. The only problem is the fact that most of them had very little actual fighting/combat experience. Notice how they showed a few seconds after he blocked the first strikes but he wasn't used to it and actually shuddered from the pain in his arms. The mill workers did put up a good defensive fight but over course, they're overpowered considering they're fighting against skilled martial artists. Ip Man stepping in to defend them and take over the battle was essentially him stopping anyone else from suffering more severe injuries. This fight showcases a lot of the differences in skills and experience.
The moment when Donnie strikes the guy in his house before the other guy gets the sword, check out Donnie’s center of balance..it’s like a total rock on the big strike, never overextends…
I really like how she appreciated the historical aspect of the story, and I feel like she was so invested into the ending fight that she FELT the HUGE emotional weight and was more heavyhearted even after the win...And I am really glad that both of you appreciated the plot, the action scenes, and the characters! Appreciate your effort, both of you, on putting such effort into admiring this beautiful movie!
Would like to defend the interpretor a bit. He's working to feed himself, maybe family(?), he's not doing anything bad to anyone. No need to call him traitor. I get it that this movie is so big on honor and stuff so his actions are meant to look worse than they really are, but for us viewers to hate him is a bit hypocritical. We all do worse things than interpretation.
This movie hits me so deep, as a Chinese, the war of Japan is such a big part in our modern history, it's so complicated and literally impacted many aspects of the modern world, so glad you guys discussed this, it's ok to not know much, but it's really nice that this history more known to the whole world
It wasn’t uncommon for Martial Artists in those time to go around challenging Masters of different schools betting either the Sifu or top student & then taking over schools it happened for centuries. Even during the 80s-90s it still happened
A quick sip on WW2 history in Asia: The Axis powers were made up of the big 3; Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and Imperial Japan. Imperial Japan Invaded/occupied a lot of China (Mostly in the North but also the South all the way to the island of Formosa aka Taiwan). They invaded a lot of Asia like Korea (which is important in understanding the Korean war later) and Indochina. Most Americans remember fighting in the islands of the pacific like the Philippines and Indonesia. The Chinese fought fiercely and hold the 2nd greatest number of casualties during the war (Between 14 million-20 million depending on the source although some new studies report even higher). 2nd only to the USSR (~27 million).
I can’t wait for y’all other reactions to this series 💙 I trained in Muay Thai for 15 years and when I was 13 that was my 6th year of Muay Thai and I started Wing Chun because of this movie i’m now on my 10 year of Wing Chun. 🙇♂️
I realized upon rewatching this movie through this reaction that the Northern characters are likely refugees fleeing the Japanese occupation (which makes that comment about not wanting to go hungry make a lot of sense). While the historical embellishments are slightly irritating, they exist to create a compelling narrative about resisting oppression and contributing to the community in times of hardship. The fight scenes are amazing, and I find the General to be an engaging antagonist that forms a nice contrast to his sadistic right hand man.
This is not a biographical film, is a superhero movie, the reality of Ip Man is not as great as the movie perfect, the movie just borrowed Ip Man the man shaped a legendary role model, there are many artistic processing ingredients, but the influence of Ip Man's martial arts school and disciple Bruce Lee are real, and Bruce Lee himself felt that the kung fu handed to him by Ip Man was the most practical of the various kung fu he had learned early on.
In my opinion, Ip Man 1 is the best, 2 was good then it starts to go down hill as it goes. There’s a lot of Ip Man adaptation but to me Tony Leung’s the Grandmaster is the best Ip Man adaptation. Shang-Chi’s dad. You guys should watch that one. Starring Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi
OK now I really want to see John and Roxy do the entire Ip Man saga watch all the sequels thank you their 1st impressions first time watching precious that I love them on it man I love the way they are reacting to it and they are getting so into it the best
As a Chinese person I feel really sorry for the translator guy. Yeah it’s easy to criticize people for working for the invading occupiers, but shit was so bad that I don’t blame anyone for capitulating or cooperating.
Among Chinese Martial teachers, it is not common to challenge in public, firstly because of face, second because of respect. If you lose, you lose face. Even if you win, you lose respect because the other teachers will feel you're a cocky a**hol*. That's why in the beginning, the duel was done in private and sworn to secrecy.
I've legitimately seen this movie over 15 times, and I never EVER noticed the contrast between the martial arts school flags in the beginning nad the Japanese flags at the end. Fantastics observation.
Guys, Ip Man 2 and 3, I think there's a 4 as well, gotta try, they all cover some hot buttoned issues in history related to Asians, don't feed them too much info, it's fun to watch it that way!
Just to help you with why they are fighting in the beginning of the movie - martial arts schools are very competitive and like gangs they have their tuff where they are allowed to teach. When you go to other schools or another area, it is like an insult and a challenge. So, like gangs, you have to defend your tuff.
Ip man is one excellent action packed martial art movie, at the same time reminding us the despicable Japanese invasion, torturing and killing so so many!!! History cannot be forgotten.
Back then in China, it seems people were often dueling others for clout, to become stronger, to be the strongest, or simply to spar to test out their skills. Reminded me of Wild West films 🤘
Ip man’s kid made less of a fuss than the wife, that’s how you know it’s a tantrum. She even admits it in the end but I guess some people are just too thick headed to comprehend that
OK BIG transation error here, one of the lines that Ip Man's kid on the bicycle who interrupted his fight with the guy challenging him from outside Fo Shan is suppose to mean "Momy said if you don't start fighting and take things a bit more seriously, all the things in the house will be broken" this line is extremely important, as it hints that Ip Mam was just observing his moves and wasn't really going all out, he was holding back and the wife ain't happy about that, shows the power level Ip Man is at

I didn’t like how they made out a ‘master’ to lose his temper and therefore really hurt people.
@@patinho5589that's what happens when you watch your fellow countryman get gunned down for no reason. It makes your blood boil, and if you can do something about it, you go full blown Ip Man on them
Fun Fact: Donnie Yen only trained in Wing-Chun for 6 months before filming.
Proof that Donnie Yen is one of the greatest martial artists of our time.😍😖
The real ip man was Bruce Lee's master
If you havent seen Flashpoint starring Donnie Yen, You are missing out! That is a brutal action movie!
The action scenes are insane. Seen Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen?
My favourite movie it’s so great
I really like how she appreciated the historical aspect of the story, and I feel like she was so invested into the ending fight that she FELT the HUGE emotional weight and was more heavyhearted even after the win...And I am really glad that both of you appreciated the plot, the action scenes, and the characters! Appreciate your effort, both of you, on putting such effort into admiring this beautiful movie!
One of my favorite films ever. Ip Man 2 is 💯
please do the sequels, they're so good.
This movie hits me so deep, as a Chinese, the war of Japan is such a big part in our modern history, it's so complicated and literally impacted many aspects of the modern world, so glad you guys discussed this, it's ok to not know much, but it's really nice that this history more known to the whole world
Roxie! Wasn’t expecting to see her when I pushed play. This movie is one of my favorite Martial Arts films.
*IP MAN 2 REACTION & REVIEW:* ruclips.net/video/wBkbhr0_C2c/видео.html
Please invite ROXY STRIAR back for the sequels
alright
It wasn’t uncommon for Martial Artists in those time to go around challenging Masters of different schools betting either the Sifu or top student & then taking over schools it happened for centuries. Even during the 80s-90s it still happened
I used to love these films, they get better and better each film he made
Good story behind it too
Wow, I knew it was good, but not like that. Ordered the 4k, after this episode. Yes, please. More.
The actress playing his wife was a model. Ip Man was her first movie ever, and she completely aced it.
Also, Roxy's nails look great in this video.
Ip movies the best. Always here for Roxy
Love that energy
I LOVE DONNIE YEN!!!!! I binged all his Ip Man movies in like two days because he was so good
Did you watch the Spin off movie as well? (Master Z - Ip Man legacy) I enjoyed that one as well :)
@@CaptainJaySolo Oh I didn't even know about it! It's going on the list, thanks!
@@saraann3281 No problem, it takes places after the 3rd Movie :)
@@saraann3281Spinoff was terrible. the 4 films by Donnie were awesome
This movie is so cool. Ip Man might be my favorite martial arts movie!
Look up the Marco Polo incident and you'll find out about Japan's invasion of China.
You guys need to do Ip Man 2,3 and 4 please!
Hello, I am a big fan from Taiwan. Very glad that you guys enjoyed a Hong Kong movie. Hope you guys will watch more in the future!
I can’t wait for y’all other reactions to this series 💙 I trained in Muay Thai for 15 years and when I was 13 that was my 6th year of Muay Thai and I started Wing Chun because of this movie i’m now on my 10 year of Wing Chun. 🙇♂️
when i was a kid me and my family watched it from ip man 1-4 , iam so glad more people will see the all 4 movie
The teacher of Bruce Lee. Who used his knowledge of Wing Chun to create Jeet Kune Do.
This is one of my favorite movies, and Reel Rejects is one of my favorite reaction channels. This is one the most awesome things I have ever watched!
Watch all 4 parts of IPman. It's beautiful❤😊
I'm going to recommend the Ong Bak series. Loved those movies as well, Tony Jaa is amazing!
Donnie Yen is a true master. Love all his films including IP Man
This is not a biographical film, is a superhero movie, the reality of Ip Man is not as great as the movie perfect, the movie just borrowed Ip Man the man shaped a legendary role model, there are many artistic processing ingredients, but the influence of Ip Man's martial arts school and disciple Bruce Lee are real, and Bruce Lee himself felt that the kung fu handed to him by Ip Man was the most practical of the various kung fu he had learned early on.
Grandmaster was the most boring of allm And Tony Leung needed so many stuntdoubles that it wasnt even funny.
A classic film it remains me off the Rocky films get ready some great action scenes
Can't wait for the other parts!! Loved both you reactions, very genuine and refreshing seeing the western prospective 😍😊
*PLEASE BRING BACK ROXY STRIAR FOR THE SEQUELS PLEASE 🙏🏾* SHE TOTALLY GOT IT
I wanna watch them all *now*!
I'm watching this clip of you. i watch from thailand I like watching you guys. and then go into the story according to the fabric
really hope you guys react to the other 3 movies. such a great movie series
Ip man’s kid made less of a fuss than the wife, that’s how you know it’s a tantrum. She even admits it in the end but I guess some people are just too thick headed to comprehend that
OK BIG transation error here, one of the lines that Ip Man's kid on the bicycle who interrupted his fight with the guy challenging him from outside Fo Shan is suppose to mean
"Momy said if you don't start fighting and take things a bit more seriously, all the things in the house will be broken"
this line is extremely important, as it hints that Ip Mam was just observing his moves and wasn't really going all out, he was holding back and the wife ain't happy about that, shows the power level Ip Man is at
you guys should react ip man 2,3 and 4 because that movie more power more intense .
How can this channel bring politics in everything.. leftists...
Roxy google second Sino-Japanese war…gives u all the info
Did you ever hear when someone attempted to mug donny yen? Got a free trip to the hospital instead😅😂😂
Absolutely 100% think y'all should react to the sequel.
Donnie Yen is an underrated Legend!!!!
I don't think he is underrated, he is literally one the most famous actors worldwide, but whatever.
