  • Understanding your current position is the key to success. Look for opportunities now and execute them well so that new doors can open. Before that big imaginary goal takes place, smaller real projects need to be well executed.

I had the same experience at art school. My professors were devout post-modernists, and they viewed and critiqued me as a "throw-back". Even as I explained that I thought one should possess a technical background in various mediums before you can break new ground conceptually. In retrospect, I would have been better served by seeking out an apprenticeship under a master. Fast forward eleven years later, and I support my family as an artist. Usually land one or two large public sculpture commissions a year, and quite a bit of painting...in the past seven years I have not had a single day where I did not have commissioned or sold work to execute. Its really the best profession on the planet, if one can endure the first five years of hardship that it takes to focus on your art exclusively. I would advise anyone just out of art school that you cannot opt to wait tables or have a day job, then expect to stack the hours necessary to become proficient and successful....you have to set your eyes on 10,000 hours and endure until you make it.....

Cesar, I have been looking all over for this advice. I really needed to hear this encouragement and hear this from an artist who has already been in my shoes. I am a Native American who has been following the old masters and learning their ways and have been combining my culture with that and have been receiving backlash and flak from both sides of these subjects. I really needed this though. Thank you.

I know onething is for shure. That wether my work becomes known or not.No matter what happens. As an artist I will continue to study and learn more skills, styles. My life will be sacrificed to create art and its ok.At the end perhaps, people will recognize and just admire some or all of my works.

Wow I didn't know that you moved to Italy! Right now I'm studying in Florence at the public academy. I've always been in love with realism and the great old masters like you do, but unfortunately the professors are still a bit stuck with conceptual and abstract art, so I feel a bit insecure.... But your channel and your art is so inspiring to me, I want to find myself and be successful like you in the future!

I appreciate your videos so much and they are really great learning windows into arts complexity. You have alot of knowledge and its invaluable.Picasso said that he took a lifetime to learn how to paint like a child.Van gogh sold a few paintings.Well, through it all we have to struggle,so then this unique versatile style develops.

I was the black sheep in art school too I wish I had thought about it the way you present it. I actually did research and a paper on it - Reconstructive post-modernism. ie slow moving trend back to more traditional art styles.

How many finished/sellable paintings would say an artist needs to have before going out into the community to promote them-self or sell their work?

Hola Cesar como estas compadre?Bueno queria preguntarte, que hace uno si no ha tenido instruccion professional o si uno no a ido a una escuela de arte o Universidad ? Como uno puede entrar al mundo del arte? Also , what is the best way to approach a GALLERY if all you have is a portfolio but havent been in a show before? Do you recomend entering online competitions etc? I have had professional education, ive been to art school but was only there to brush up on my skills but never got to the part of how to deal with a gallery?.

Evan Peterson There is a small number of people who can't help themselves. It's the same mentality that finds it acceptable to vandalize the world--it's easier to destroy than to create, so lazy, unimaginative folks trash something and feel as if they are somehow "participating." Don't let them discourage you or dissuade you from creating your art. If you do, you are a target of vandalism yourself. Don't be a victim.

Take a look to Freud's work (Lucian), his etchings will change your perception of volume if you watch them closely, his paintings are some stuff too.. Actually "realism art" does not exist, what's was considered "realism" on past eras, now looks like childish paintings, and so on... nothing can be exactly the same as the reality, no matter how objective, technical and methodic art becomes through the ages.

I understand your point, but I disagree. Although galleries are one way to show your art to the world, I don't think it's the proper mindset to believe that displaying in galleries means you've "made it in the art world." I think a true artist doesn't care about an elusive "making it," ("making it" is a metric that's personally defined - you can choose to make appearing in a gallery part of your own metric) I think an artist is more concerned about connecting and engaging with people, no matter what channel is necessary. Whatever tool an artist can use to reach an audience and connect with their audience, the better, and galleries are only one of dozens. In fact, if you "know yourself" then you probably know your audience, and there's a decent chance that your audience doesn't spend time in galleries, but might just spend it enjoying art through other channels. You have a valid argument, but I disagree.

    • @santocesart
      @santocesart  6 лет назад +2

Joseph Soeller I agree with you. Galleries do not define the artist, nor the quality of their artistic expression. But I asked myself, What has been the best way to show Art to the people? Through a screen or in gallery spaces have been the main answers.

@@santocesart First of all I love your channel!
I found that a nice way to sell painting is through a local cafe in your area. A cafe is a so-called second home in a lot of modern countries. The people are sitting with their coffees and chatting, and they have all the time in the world to watch the painting and let it sink into them. That's how I find the customers who really like my painting, because there is nothing biased and pushed to them like "buy me" or "this is good because... 1. 2. 3. etc."
I believe that art has only one rule, and it has been proven throughout history and that's why I love art so much:
Kill the status quo by doing something new and refreshing that puts doubt on what has been the same for years.
Every time an artist has done a step that changes (mainly through styles) the art they were cherished by the public.

visual art are dead, photografy took his place, what still stand are the cheat they call modern art, its sad, that there are less and less professional visual artists.
