I love painting, but i'm very impatient so i rush and then i wonder why something doesn't turn out how i'd like. i wish i could be patient enough for layering
+pereztaastic The secret is to only paint until you feel the urge to rush. For me it's about an hour or so. By the end of the week, I have 7 + hours into a painting. I usually need about 15 hours to complete a 11 x 17 painting. There is nothing written that says you can only do a painting in one sitting. If you can't overcome the urge, then I suggest you switch to a smaller canvas, 6" x 8" so less time is spent on the background. Another suggestion is to switch mediums to watercolor where speed is required. Play classical music in the background. It will soothe and slow you down. Oil painting by it's very nature is time consuming. Da Vinci took his time with painting the Mona Lisa. According to legend, he spent four years on the portrait and still wasn't done.

+pereztaastic Our modern world imposes a frenetic pace and a sense of vague urgency about life which is a mental habit contrary to artistic work, especially in the beginning. Setting a calm workspace free from distractions and interruptions, work in 30-90 min blocks at first, enforce zero deadlines. So much is about creating a mindful focus, that is intent, but unaware of time. It's about developing new habits, not about waiting for some magical muse to inspire greatness. It becomes a give-and-take rhythm; give the work a dab of paint, then take a moment to see its effect, then repeat until done. Stop/take breaks as soon as you catch yourself applying paint without looking at the changes you're making.

it takes time to plan, but often when learning we do not know of the required steps that could help or the benefits of that exercise. Over time you will find the right steps for your desired results. However try not to get obsessed with any doctrine or methodology...but adopting one completely is a good start to "learn" and then adapt...but you need to be dedicated to learning and growing and doing...
Shed yourself of insecurities and those who do not support you....and protect your mental state in your desire to grow and learn...share selectively...as most will not have any appreciation of the work required to get to accomplishing and finishing a painting and my be quick to offer "suggestions". This is where a good mentor or guide is helpful...but be humble to learn from them and to continuously explore. All the best.

Remember, it depends what kind of portrait you're up to. If you go for a realistic one, you may need more time than a more expressionist portrait. I am really bored of spending more than a day or two for the big ones, and I may need to work my patience as well, tho, its a matter of the way you painting in general and what way suits you better for the better results at the specific time you're painting :) It takes time to improve, be patient.
Cesar's is truly a master. His paintings are magnificent. I love his attitude toward art. He has a great sense of humor and seems to really enjoy sharing his knowledge through his videos. I would love to meet him sometime or visit his studio or a gallery that has a good sampling of his work.
I've known Ceasar's work for less than a year in the art world, and I'm glad he's doing this for everyone. I can't afford it now, but I think it's pocket change to ask for considering all the people involved, and really most importantly this artist's time, and years of experienced skillfully condensed in 20 hours. If you want to learn and be good, practice is key, but a step in the right direction that saves you time is something to never turn down.
It would take me 35,000 years to learn to paint like him. Genial!

detail doesn't matter.... important is to put spirit in it. it can be quick (impressionism), or long... it doens't need to look the same with figure mdel

I was a student at the School of Visual Arts in NYC during the 70s Painting classes were a total waste. Splash some paint on the canvass and we'll declare it edgy art. Fast forward to 2008 I attend a fine art school on Long Island that teaches the Dutch Master style similar to the video. It is the difference between night and day. And if you can't afford $200 for a video how can you afford quality materials like $40 brushes, $50 tubes of paint and very expensive linen canvasses? If you're on that tight of a budget then study charcoal, pastel and pencil drawing.

What about Gottfried Helnwein? He's much more a realist and more lax in terms of flamboyancy than Eloy.

I cannot afford to go to a school and spend thousands...and I cannot afford to stop working...but I can afford some good tutorials to mimic and learn from such as this...so it can be good for some of us...okay.
hey jetsonjoe, i'd advise otherwise, tutorials of any kind are quite empty despite the quantity and quality of the teacher/teachings. You are best off grasping holds of information - indicating key elements to any structure of an artworks subject. Through experimentation, failure and the mastery of the basics of art comes the success and guidance you're looking for. After success with the pencil you can develop you're painting. Art progress is yet a journey in which only you can teach yourself, only you can take note of the tips and tricks of the trade, art is something that you can only grasp if you yourself try to grasp it. The greats of the real art were never given feedback other than the imperfections of their painting and the real life subject itself. Heed this merely as a warning, anyone can progress as far as they experiment. Hope this helps with you're hesitations in moving forward.
The secret to learning how to paint, or write or play music is to work hard. To have the tenacity to devote time and effort to your pursuit everyday. Every successful business man will tell you the secret to success is working hard.
No class or DVD will make you a good artist without committing yourself. It is an easy secret and yet the hardest. Along with painting, I play the piano; to learn a a new piece I have to sit down and practice it hundreds, thousands of times to achieve a successful result...the hardest part is still just sitting down and practicing
If you really want to paint then just paint, and paint and paint. Shut off the TV and the computer. Get a sketch book and a pencil and sketch everyday for an hour or 2. As you continue to practice, you will be faced with problems and you will have to find a solution...be your own teacher...there are millions of free resources out there, but none can replace the foundation of learning...Practice.

The preview doesnt really show you the most valuable thing to be found on the dvd which is Cesar's thought process, questions and creative choices every artist should be making as a part of improving their portrait work.
His philosophy and views on art, including the problems with art schools today is especially inspiring.

No amount of money spent on a lesson will turn you into an artist. The secret to learning how to paint is to work hard at your craft, to sit down everyday and commit your time and effort.
The artist in this video did not just sit down and in a few hours create this masterpiece, it is the culmination of years of commitment and hard work.
The real secret to learning how to paint ( or write, or play music, or make a million dollars) is having the tenacity to work hard. Unfortunately, that is something one can not buy.
+michael levens I completely agree. everyone's process is different too. I have formal art training but did not make art for a very long time and just started a couple of years ago. The growth that I have realized since I have started back is really amazing. It's work though. I think it's the desire to want to be better and the discipline to continue and fine tune your craft that makes an artist stand out.
Well said, young lady. In school, I loved the "5 minutes live model sketch lesson" work fast and intense for 5 minutes...I was the master! haha...but I finally realized no matter how many times I walk by the canvas it just doesn't progress unless I put in the time...maybe its maturity finally setting in...

Hey Man i have this freaking problem i dont know what to do: i was traying to paint a portrait but it seems i just forgot how to paint because i just cant blend the colours of the skin and My brushes leave traces and texture on the paint and im using soft brushes

These faces are incorrectly built. Their structure is falling apart and spreading. They somewhat resemble people after strokes. You focus on the details and are blind to the whole.
This video is not useful for me…. First thing of any portrait is how to draw a perfect shape, tilt in face etc… colour etc comes later ..
One of my many complaints appears again here. And that is the anachronistic recurrence, seldom discussed, wherein a sitter for a portrait is asked to don some headgear that is just not worn in real life. So it looks quite strained. In this case, the headgear is the thin bandana tied in a knot on top. I find that to be an artistic affectation, and it actually conveys elements that make it impossible for me to accept such paintings as authentic art. I am not saying that we need pure straightforward mundane realism, just that an extra burden for the artist is to somehow achieve real workable solutions to problems like this, especially if we are to accept representational art as still valid. The great artists always found a way.

I always found rounded side profile unappealing, I later realized that I preferred Germanic women; Irish Iberians have the highest roundness among white people in the side profile of the mouth; black people have the highest overall, Irish Iberians are part black. Pure English people have the least of it, Germans and the English have a lot of similar heritage (the British Royal family has German roots.)

I am a practicing artist for many years, but after six of seven days, I work completely different! I can't explain it to all but if you are serious, c couple of hundred bucks...will be pennies for what's to be learned from this man's teaching! He leaves out nothing, but you have to work! He TELLS you that there are no "MAGIC TRICKS"! YOU don't purchase because its easy; you purchase it to employ new principles of practice! Having thought art for many years, this video has chanced my approach forever! You will never get a better lesson for less, or more than 200. bucks! It will chance you and your work! he does good work...I think most people can learn from this.... as well as from other professionals. Yeah it looks expensive...but it is one way of painting and done to an high standard..that's my unbiased view.....seeing the finished result. I do not own the dvd...
