  • Alpkit are delighted to present 'Chasing the Sublime', a mesmeric glimpse at the physicality of long distance cold water swimming by award winning director Amanda Bluglass
Why do we put ourselves into the path of discomfort and risk? What drives us to get too cold and too tired, to battle with fear, in the name of adventure?
Loch Hourn on the Knoydart peninsula in the Western Isles of Scotland is regarded as one of the last wildernesses of Europe. Access to sea lochs is difficult. Salt water mingles with fresh water as it runs off the mountains, icy even in high summer. This mesmeric film immerses us in the physicality of cold water swimming, asking why we put ourselves in the path of discomfort and risk; why does the search for adventure take us to ever more remote and inhospitable places?
Join the originators of The Outdoor Swimming Society, 'swim twins' Kate Rew and Kari Furre, as they set out to chase the sublime.

I began winter swimming through the lockdowns and never stopped. It's true about the poets heart. You notice the light glimmer on the sea, the shadows of your own body in the water, how the sun comes up and changes the colours of the sky. Your senses are alive to notice all of it, as if our atoms become connected.

Swimming has always been my pleasure & bliss despite overtraining over years and years in my youth under a sadistic egomaniac coach. How ever from that awful experience grew a love for swimming for the love of it not time or medals. Swim to escape the crowds at the beach. Swim to be able to explore the vast majority of the beach not the minute area with sand packed with people. Now in my 40's I swim to relax to let my body let go of all the worries. My form is impecable from years of laps in a pool which paid off 20+ years later in achieving a freedom that few can really experience. When other people stay close to the shore, I'm able to swim across a large span. Thank you for a beautiful film that gives me even more courage to be myself and dive to more remote places every chance I get.

Same here, I have medals, sew on badges and trophies stored away in cardboard boxes. All of it is now meaningless, the early morning training sessions, the after school training sessions. Falling asleep, in the classroom, just from mere exhaustion! Watching this beautiful video, also reminds of a time when I used to occasionally train in the cold depths of Loch Lomand. Some of those experiences, I can only describe as spiritual. I can now feel the water calling me again

Same experience here, although my Dad was my greatest enemy concerning the sport and competition for 17 years. Nothing less than perfection was acceptable. Now at 39, living up in the mountains of Oregon as a free adult, I swim in the cold mountain lakes for me. To be in nature with my own thaughts. To talk with my God. To let go of the stress and hardship brought on by daily life. To feel the freedom of movement. To feel the cold, which rejuvenates my body and mind. It's such an incredible blessing to move through water with a calm mind and a smooth stroke. Just being in water makes me feel more alive and at home than anywhere else.

finally someone has captured the spirit of outdoor swimming. Adventure means uncertainty. We mitigate risk but cant eliminate it. That heart in the mouth as I take the first step is a necessary feeling to that freedom. "Are you that lone swimmer" I get asked, its nice to know there are two others. Well done you guys.

Exactly. In the sea I feel both big and small. Big because I hold my position in the light of fear and small for the vastness of the ocean and being a small peck in it.

To me, they all appear to rely of the same narration, music and visual style etc. The formula starts to take away from the power of their message.
