It's a lovely car for what its intended to do - namely driving around the town and for short journeys to and from work and the shops. The seating position is excellent - you sit high up and it's very, very comfortable. Being a hybrid also gives you great fuel economy. We're averaging over 65 mph at present. Downsides? It is a little noisy when revved hard but nothing too bad. Our 18 inch wheels rumble over some potholes and the suspension is a bit hard but as Matt says it's really not too bad and a very minor issue if at all. Room in the back isn't great although fine for children. The boot is more than adequate. It's quite fun to drive too and although not a fast, sporty vehicle is responsive and grips the road well. All in all it's just what we (a retired couple) wanted and together with Toyota's reliability and solid build it should prove a durable buy. One last thing. Our model has numerous safety features that can be turned off if needs be but they can sometimes become a little irritating. That said, it's great to know that the car has high safety standards and comforting for drivers and pedestrians alike. A fair review, Matt. We agree fully. It's a lovely little urban car and one that we recommend thoroughly. Does what it says on the tin and so economical.
I had a test drive of this car earlier this week and it really impressed me. Features on the Excel modle are very good. Thank you for the great reviews Matt!

@@madliena97 Well, I've tried a T-cross. Same price. Cheap, scratchy plastic everywhere. Not very impressive to drive. Worse economy. A tad bit more space at the back, but no cupholder, no arm rest there. I'm 6 feet and the Toyota is very comfy at the back too. The Toyota feels more expensive inside and more comfortable. It also comes with a 3 year warranty that can be extended to 10 years if you service it at a Toyota dealer. No car can beat that.
I work for Toyota and was at the head office in burgh heath 2 weeks ago and actually B mode doesn’t do any regenerative it actually disengages MG1 and the energy saved/ regenerate from the bakes actually just get wasted and not put back into the battery!!
I just really want to say, I appreciate going back on the old review style: Actually revealing the car Mathew makes reference to as having *insert better feature* ; Great review, keep it like this, with the practicality section including people in frame as a visual check.
I don't blame you and other RUclips reviewers, for misunderstanding what the 'B mode' on the transmission truly does and when - and when NOT - to use it. Because Toyota dealers can be pretty clueless themselves when you ask them about it. I bought the new Yaris Hybrid last year. I've watched car reviewers testdrive the hybrid in the city with the B mode setting chosed, which means the car constantly loses speed when you aren't pressing the accelerator - and it gives you a worse fuel economy as well. They thought B stood for improved regenerative breaking as well.
1:04 the black cladding part is for safety when the car gets hit from the rear it will take the force and also for saving your money when you get small knock from cars from the rear when there is slow traffic.
I own an excel. I agree about the suspension and road noise on some surfaces. Not being used to CVT I took a while to get used to the way the engine comes in and out without permission. I do like the ca , it gives on average around 63 mpg taking it easy and on a run back from Cornwall on the M5/M4 it averaged 61.1 mpg cruising around the 70 mark, fully landed with holiday gear , two border Collies and my wife. The tester did not mention that the car has three driving modes apart from the all electric button, One is dead eco and the car behaves very slow on picking up, the second is the default which is normal. the third is a sort of sport mode which throws eco out of the widow. As I said before, I like the car and its growing on me as I get used to it. This is not a car for boy racers, its for people who spend most of their time on short runs, but sometimes need to drive a long way without getting a head or back ache. Above all it carries a ten year warranty called Relax, this though does requires dealer servicing to qualify. To be honest, with the technology in this car I believe that dealer servicing is essential ,as its very tech and computer controlled. As pointed out elsewhere, engaging B when driving down hills brings in the engine for braking, it does not actuate the injectors or the spark plugs until you press the accelerator pedal. It also does not increase regenerative braking, just saves your brake pads on steep hills.
This is gonna be my wife's birthday gift next month, her first car! :D ordered it a few months ago, it's just about to be manufactured in Japan, exciting
Toyota hybrids are designed to give the driver maximum control over the vehicle, including driving dynamics, and this is ultimately the purpose of the ‘D’ and ‘B’ modes that sometimes confuse clients. Put simply, the ‘D’ mode is for normal driving, and ‘B’ mode should be used when you are going downhill. Why does a hybrid need to two separate modes for driving and going downhill? When driving down a steep, continuous grade, especially one with curves, you will use the brakes frequently. The ‘B’ mode in our Hybrid vehicles changes handling to give you better control in this situation.
11:20 So many people get B mode wrong. It’s not harder regen, B mode is actual engine braking. The only place where you should enable B mode is when descending a mountain pass. When you are descending for a long time, you hybrid battery will get fully charged by regen, and charging it more will lead to overheating the battery. So you enable B mode and use your cylinders for braking instead, just like all “normal” cars do.
Purchased a Yaris Cross Design with the SUV pack couldn’t be happier. Yes, the higher specs will have things that you need, but the car is definitely a lovely car. Downsides are: The window buttons needs lights and there is a lack of lights at the rear. It also does not have front seat rear pockets. The safety features are amazing, loving how easy it is to drive. Looks stunning and feels very good.

Little correction with the power of the car: While the combinded 114hp are correct, the maximum torque of 120Nm is only the combustion engine itself. The electric one alone has a maximum torque of about 140Nm
Love small cars…so easy to maneuver, park, and easy on gas. Unfortunately, the N.A. versions often lack the bells and whistles of their foreign counterparts.
@@jonathanlyng3442 I was speaking in general. Hi, in Australia this car currently has no centre console armrest on any variant - and the top spec 'Urban' also has an ugly brown interior. For us that was a deal breaker. I hope in 2022, we get a Yaris cross with an armrest and a better interior.
It's a really beautiful car! The drawbacks are minor. I would choose it over a Peugeot 2008 because of efficiency, reliability and more normal cockpit. And it is a good choice for most people, who cannot afford superexpensive EVs. My only question is: Is the motor punchy enough to drive comfortably on mountain roads and elevated streets?
It is a little bit louder when going uphill because it is cvt... But it is very good to drive on twisty roads.. even mountain roads. Very precise and light for that kind of car. It is light car so its got enough power. When you accelerate hard, you also hear cvt quite enough, but nothing bad. The biggest drawback is wind noise on speeds above 120 km/h. But you get used to that. If you have good music in there.. you dont even think about it.
Yay!!! So glad you released this, I was waiting for carwow to drop this video, as I have ordered my yaris cross excel and wanted to know Mats thoughts!!!
My work have bought in a few of these cars going from the C-hr to the 2023 Yaris cross entry level version. The car averages around 5.7 liters per 100km. But that's about where the good ends with this car. After every shift I've had quite severe back pain and I'm only 23 years old, and my colleagues agree that the comfort is some of the worst we've ever experienced in a car, the legroom in the back is non existent my colleague of 165cm could barely get in. The brakes don't really work when it's cold because the car doesn't respond for like a half second when you slam on the brakes. Two of our 10 Yaris crosses have had electrical issues where TCS, stm, abs and a few other systems stop working out of nowhere and these cars have had 3000km and 400km on them when this happened. So for anyone reading this comment I would just say don't get this car, it's uncomfortable, unreliable when it comes to electrics and downright scary to drive when it's slippery because it doesn't seem to get any traction even with brand new studded winter tyres
I’m very much a crossover guy, love them! They just have more style and character than you’re typically family / full sized SUV. I would love a Yaris Cross as my first car and if you are getting one, I recommend getting in the dark gold colour they launched the car with. Beautiful colour! So yeah, great little car, hybrid too which is a big win. Car makers need to market their hybrids as much as their EVs. People who are still worried about range tend to not realise they can have a best-of-both worlds workhorse.
Hi After three months of driving the Yaris Cross Hybrid, here are my main likes & dislikes: Likes: 1.Easy to drive from day one. It gives you the feeling of knowing the car. 2.Very good fuel consumption: 3.5 lit/100 km city driving and around 5 lit/100 km highway driving at 120-130 km/h 3.Value for Money Dislike: 1.Engine noise (you get used to it or accept it) 2.Not enough trunk space, especially if you get rid of the useless repair kit and replace it with a spare tire. 3.No welcome home lights……it gets really dark I need to point out that when driving on the motorway with +160Km/h, fuel consumption disappointed me. I was expecting lower values…..but okay, understandable…. For the Greek market, considering all aspects, the Yaris Cross is by far the best choice.
I'm learning to drive in the Yaris Cross and absolutely love it. I would buy it as my first car because its so reliable comfortable practical and easy to drive.
Thanks for a normal review, i have been waiting for this. I know that this kind of videos dont have a lot views but this is a normal car. Btw could you do Mazda CX30 revien with the X active engine 🥺

They never have enough stock… but promise the earth.. never has that issue with Mercedes or VW in the past..

Hi Mat, thank you for your video. Let me give you an advice related to the B mode in hybrid vehicles. When you are constantly using the B mode, it creates additional stress to the hybrid system reducing its lifespan. So my tip would go for not advising hybrid drivers to do that. If you would like a more technical explanation on that matter, I would gladly do it.
B mode should be used going downhill, to help car slow down by not only using brakes. So you will save the brakes, and it will also charge battery a little bit more than using just brakes. It is not intendent to use B mode in city, like one foot driving.
@@ivoc9023 well said and it can reduce your fuel economy. Also, why press the EV button when the car automatically goes into electric running at low speed. EV button is basically for manoeuvring the car without the ICE starting
Well. I use it Yaris Cross daily so I know what we need to add 😊 Firstly 4x4 stably system. Secendly more silent ane I like to have little less hard suspension.. And if You want more luxury choose Rav4, Highlander or TLC GR. Thanks
Good afternoon Mat. A great review as always. I have a question to ask you. Do you think a Yaris Cross AWD is better than an FWD to compromise on space, price and fuel consumption? Or an AWD is a minor thing and an FWD should be the first choice?
I suppose it would come down to if you feel you need the AWD, as in have to drive in areas where a FWD will struggle. The AWD might have better suspension in the back, but you trade away trunk space, fuel consumption and several reviewers have said that somehow the FWD version actually drove better in regular conditions.
Most japanese/korean cars seem to have that interior fuel flap release thing. In 5 years of owning one i never got used to the idea and countless times had to go back inside to pull the release lever - usually when tired on the way home from work. Maddening!
My 70yo parents have a brand new one of these, and it's interesting to see the spec/interior differences between the New Zealand market "Limited" spec one vs the European one - the whole gauge cluster is different, NZ gets the JDM one with the circular pods. Their first brand new car in 40 years. Bit of a shock for them LOL.
yeah but better then chr. chr is really hideous. inside and outside. this one looks better. way better. but of course it not a GLA. but has way better tech
In other markets, there is a conventional ICE-only version with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol, but that is not offered in the UK. I believe this is because there wouldn’t be enough demand for it in the UK and it wouldn’t sell as well as the hybrid - this was likely also the reason why Toyota discontinued the ICE-only 1.2-litre turbo version of the Corolla in the UK for 2020, leaving just the hybrid versions.
@@MagicNash89 apart from the ECVT, yes. Really smooth powertrain. As years have gone on toyota gearboxes have gotten better. They were never bad, just noisy. But aside from that, the new hybrid systems uses lithium cells not nickel, so the go further and at higher speeds. Definitely would treat drive one.
How will this effect the used market or long term ownership? I hear the UK really loves hybrids. But what about when the car gets 10 years old? It seems like it would suck to not be able to afford a new hybrid and forced to buy a used car that will break in a few years
@@baronvonjo1929 I've bought a lot of used hybrids and the key thing I would say, is when looking for a used hybrid make sure the car has had its hybrid health check done every year. This will tell you the state and life of the batteries. I've seen hybrids that are 10 years old functioning perfectly and unfortunately seen hybrids newer than that with poor battery health because owners have left the car sitting months on end without using the batteries, I have rebuilt hybrid battery packs too. So just keep an eye out for good service history with the hybrid health check included and you won't need to worry. In terms of used car values and if we hope the situation calms down a bit, I still think toyota will command strong values because they now have a 10 year warranty / 100,000 miles warranty whichever comes soonest and that's on any toyota even with no service history. That's another piece of mind. Hope that helps.

Great comment - very helpful! Thanks! I wonder whether it'd be a good car for cross-country trips too...
B mode to all automatic gearboxes induces engine brake and should be used only for steep downhill road sections. It does not affect regen at all.
I had a test drive of this car earlier this week and it really impressed me. Features on the Excel modle are very good. Thank you for the great reviews Matt!
@Auraslashed, is the Yaris cross under power?
@@oldy0960 I wouldnt say that its under powered, like most hybirds you have a power mode. However you wouldn't buy this car if you where looking for a performance vehicle.

Now there is a Yaris for everyone really
A sporty one
A basic one
And now a crossover one
Neat
I have tested this car too. The most complete version. The weakest point is the engine. Starting 60 km/h and higher it makes noise during the acceleration. It must be a stronger engine for this car weight.
Interesting design! Similar to the CHR! Surprised they made something so close, basically a baby version of it even with the rear three quarters
Exactly! I honestly love the unique design of the CH-R and the Yaris Cross.
@@Irysuwu agreed! I think this will probably sell really well and its a good throw back to when a model of a car had many different iterations, versions, the Yaris now has an AWD sports car, hybrid, small hatch and now a cross over.

This car has one fault, it's so incredibly expensive, you can buy Similarly equipped Rav4s for $2000 more in Australia
£22k for a Yaris. And I own an old one. Car prices are crazy nowadays.
Makes space for an Aygo Cross i version though. Which is quite a funky name ....... I GO CROSS EYE ! heh
It costs only 17300€ in the EU (granted not a hybrid) but that's litterally half the price of a RAV4 at 35 000€
How do they get away with charging 22 grand for this crap plastic box with no space and no style. Honestly baffles me people pick something like this over anything by Volkswagen or a European manufacturer.
Interesting. In the UK the cheapest RAV is £32000. That's £10000 more than the cheapest Cross model.
I have been waiting so long to see this - I needed Matt’s tick of approval before I purchase a Yaris Cross! 😊
Visual check recommended.
The yaris cross earned 5 star safety in euro ncap crash test.
I realy like the design off the Yaris cross and the Way it look at the back! I would clearly prefer it as a family car.
They 'Crossed' the line for being so good

This is gonna be my wife's birthday gift next month, her first car! :D ordered it a few months ago, it's just about to be manufactured in Japan, exciting
Watching from Kenya 🇰🇪 I love the reviews
I am considering to go for the Toyota yaris cross the more I see about it I am more liking it.
i sell them here in NZ. We are old out. Can' get enough of them
Saw it only on pictures, bought it before trying it, loved it in person, enjoying it every day.
Basically a taller and more expensive Yaris.
The reason why I would buy this over a Yaris is 4WD.
@Rica 01 Go away niece Rica.
Downsides are:
The window buttons needs lights and there is a lack of lights at the rear. It also does not have front seat rear pockets.
The safety features are amazing, loving how easy it is to drive. Looks stunning and feels very good.
I would take this over the CH-R any day..
And a lexus version would be chic!
I, like many people, even non-car people, have a soft spot for boxy vehicles... Though I don't know why Toyota is naming every tiny product a Yaris... Why during their huge EV reveal... They revealed (though verily subtly) a Fj Cruiser looking like tiny SUV called... The Yaris Cruiser... Obviously 🙄
Also I can't help but say that... *this looks a Yaris on steroids*
I guess they're trying to create a cohesive "yaris" brand, but I don't believe that it has enough name recognition or history to go that road.

Little correction with the power of the car:
While the combinded 114hp are correct,
the maximum torque of 120Nm is only the combustion engine itself. The electric one alone has a maximum torque of about 140Nm
so.. 260Nm combined..? or 140Nm for 10 meters? just a little question on the torque of the car, since you're being quite vague...
Never waited this long for you to review a car. Tank you
Love small cars…so easy to maneuver, park, and easy on gas. Unfortunately, the N.A. versions often lack the bells and whistles of their foreign counterparts.
@@jonathanlyng3442 I was speaking in general. North American subcompacts (and compacts) never get all the options that are offered overseas, like power folding side view mirrors, sunroofs, heated and cooled seats, sports trims, etc. We always get the watered down versions. But I get it….subcompacts are not as popular anymore and most folks don’t wanna pay for the options. Still, at least offer then as an option.

Square wheel arches are deux rugeur these days. Good little round town rig, easy to park.
@trave7644 do you mean the car I drove? Then no the one I've driven is a base version wheel on the left side model
Looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing than the standard Yaris from an exterior design perspective!
Imagine i was looking for a review on this car earlier this week hoping matt had done one. Nice car and review
I didn’t know pigeon street turn ups were back in fashion. Good informative video
Nice summary!

Hi
After three months of driving the Yaris Cross Hybrid, here are my main likes & dislikes:
Likes:
1.Easy to drive from day one. It gives you the feeling of knowing the car.
2.Very good fuel consumption: 3.5 lit/100 km city driving and around 5 lit/100 km highway driving at 120-130 km/h
3.Value for Money
Dislike:
1.Engine noise (you get used to it or accept it)
2.Not enough trunk space, especially if you get rid of the useless repair kit and replace it with a spare tire.
3.No welcome home lights……it gets really dark
I need to point out that when driving on the motorway with +160Km/h, fuel consumption disappointed me.
Please review GR86🔥

It does have wireless charging in the tray in front of the gear selector I don't know if its a extra but comes with the premium edition.
It’s really good fun to take on a good B road
One of our local dealers is crap. Nearly 6month wait for the delivery of the normal Yaris.. was thinking of getting this one as well after my car got stolen…. Don’t think I’ll go back to them. They never have enough stock… but promise the earth.. never has that issue with Mercedes or VW in the past..
Now imagine a GR Cross Yaris
I don’t know if there is a market for this, but it would be pretty cool i think.
I'm sure there will be, at least in Japan. If the Prius Prime can get a GR makeover then surely this will!
Before 2000:
Standard - black bumpers
Optional extra - body coloured bumpers
After 2000:
Standard - body coloured bumpers
Optional extra at close to 10% premium over the base vehicle - cheap tacky black plastic trim and we call it an SUV
We need a Yaris Cross GR-TRD
I have a Toyota Corolla and I've never had a problem with the filler cap release, before that I had a Yaris and didn't have a problem then either
Hi Mat, thank you for your video.
Let me give you an advice related to the B mode in hybrid vehicles. When you are constantly using the B mode, it creates additional stress to the hybrid system reducing its lifespan. So my tip would go for not advising hybrid drivers to do that.
If you would like a more technical explanation on that matter, I would gladly do it.
i'm interested in your more elabotate explanation
B mode should be used going downhill, to help car slow down by not only using brakes. So you will save the brakes, and it will also charge battery a little bit more than using just brakes. It is not intendent to use B mode in city, like one foot driving.

Maddening!

Is the hybrid mostly better than the petrol, if we forget about the environmental aspect for a second?
@@MagicNash89 yes the instant initial torque from that electric motor is lovely not to mention the amazing fuel economy aswell
In America we get the Corolla cross which is basically a RAV4, with a different front and bubbly back
