Toyota ECVT is a massive plus! Not a negative by any means. If you like to floor it regularly this is not the car for you. You buy a hybrid like this as it’s more efficient and reliable than its rivals. If you want to go fast and accelerate hard (which is inefficient) there are much better options.
I've driven a CVT for the last 5 years and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, not sure about this Yaris Cross though, not keen on the front end or those squared off wheel arches.
Why do car journalists always complain about the CVT? I drive a Toyota with CVT myself. It is a very economical transmission. Why rev the car to get a quick acceleration? CVT cars are built to be economical. We should get rid of the idea that quick is better, more fuelefficient is better. acceleration is an item from the past. Car journalists shouldn't be concerned about it at all. Most cars get from 0-60 in say 6-12 seconds. So why bother? And why do you need a bigger fueltank with such god mpg figures? Love the car and the colour by the way.

Just bought one which be delivered in June - could'nt get the 4x4 as that would take too long Nov/Dec. Once I understood how the CVT worked it was no problem - presumably if you need a burst of speed you just have to suffer the noise. Economy is great and the 10 year or 100,000 warranty, found the car comfortable to drive felt much higher up - my existing Yaris is ten years old with well over 100,000 on the clock and has cost me virtually nothing in repairs so they threatened to send out a man to set fire to it ! If it fails its MOT in May they will give me a free car until the new one comes - no one beats their customer service.
I don't really understand the criticism to the plastics, it is the best yaris ever launched and it competes with a ford puma... Besides, I can bet you that those plastics will never squeak, compared to my 2015 renault that I sold. I bought that renault and 2 months later there were already noises coming from the plastics. I own this car since the release date and it feels just as if I picked it up yesterday. Don't wory about the plastic guys, toyota bolted everything really really well.
had my 2024 Yaris excel for 3 weeks . love it . just had the Yaris ikon for 3 years . that was great for economy and ride . but the cross is far better . so far about 10mpg lower , but still cold weather . be better in the summer and on a good run . also the cross is heavier . bigger car .
I run the puma atm and love it, especially the mega box, but am very tempted by the Yaris cross especially as retirement is only four years away, this would be perfect for me not fully electric so no range anxiety for those longer journeys, it seems the best of both worlds
Have had one on order since October 2021. The due date has been put back 3 times now. I am obviously looking forward to it, although it will probably be 'old news' by the time it arrives! I have not seen one yet on British roads so I guess I am not alone. Come on Toyota....sort yourselves out please!!!
Guess you have it now? How's it going? I have looked/sat in two at the dealers, test drive will be next. Seats on the GR Sport too firm for me, the Excell/Design (not sure which one it was) were more compliant. Glove box is tiny, rear legroom is indeed snug, and the acute angle of rear doors makes access snug. But I still like the car, oddly enough I think the rear looks better than the front 😂 (not keen on the Kia type grille). The double bubble dashboard/combing is a big ugly/old school. There is a new 2024 version being released in the far east, with improvements to the styling.
Took delivery July 2023 of 2wd top of range excel in Scarlet Flame pearl paint. Added city pack and suv pack with side steps So far cant fault it. So easy to drive. Having city pack with sensors linked to auto braking is fantastic and cvt seamless changing between ev and engine mode saves thinking about gear changing etc. I promise anyone choosing the Cross that they will be totally satisfied. The clincher for us, being in our 60s, was the 10 year 100,000 warranty provided you have servicing done at a Toyota dealership. 3 year Monthly service packages are available at a fixed price and can be repeated every 3 years at renegotiated prices. So unless you are a petrol hothead with a heavy right foot more interested in excitement than environment, the Yaris Cross could be, like us, for you.
Hi the spec you have is exactly what I am looking for, just one question if you don't mind, is the driver's seat power adjustable, all I can see doing research is a electric lumbar support?
I have tested this car too. The most complete version. The weakest point is the engine. Starting 60 km/h and higher it makes noise during the acceleration. It must be a stronger engine for this car weight. 3-cilinders engine is to small
I liked the exterior design of the color but inside the back seats there is not much space, even so, it is super economical and for trips in the city, it is excellent. Love the reviews done by Doug.
So the dash is soft touch, but the door handles are hard plastic. Makes no sense at all. What do you touch more often, the dash or the door handle? What was Toyota thinking?
Nice, I have the MK3 Yaris hybrid and I'm going for the corolla 2.0 excel for the next car as I need more power and all around better handling than the small Yaris.
Interested in this for commuting and pulling my ultra light micro caravan. Plusses for me are the fuel efficiency (obvs), reliability, small footprint for handy parking and huge boot capacity compared to my current Mini. Not loving the looks inside or out though - much prefer the curvier profile of the C-HR and the Juke but with a heavy heart I'm probably going to have to make a sensible decision than one based on fun.
Great review, but the CVT in Toyota Hybrids isn’t a REAL CVT. It’s actually referred to as an e-CVT - it seems to mimic a traditional CVT gearbox but it’s a totally different type of technology (Planetary Gear Set). My 15 year old Prius e-CVT has worked flawlessly without missing a beat. Accelerating in a hybrid is more reminiscent of setting an aircraft’s turbofans to full thrust - you’ll get the same howl you’d get on an airliner streaking down the runway for a take off. Reach the speed you want, and the hybrid drops power to cruising mode - even better if there’s cruise control available. Good mpg indeed. I drove an Aygo X a few months ago - managed 64mpg without even trying - I was just keeping up with the traffic on the North Circular A406.
As an owner of this car, i agree everything he says... Puma is MUCH better option but, 1 thing for sure, this car is extremely fuel efficient, which is why i get it.
Not a single word about the driving position, the driver seat or its adjustments and especially leg support? As a fairly tall guy it seems 99% of all youtube car reviewers forget this.
Great looking car and it looks very good value. Its a shame the interior is soooooo dull though. Maybe higher trim levels are better, other than that, I like this a lot.
Considering the Yaris Cross, I'm drawn to its generous boot space and SUV aesthetics-perfect for shuttling things to our new vacation house. However, the gas tank size gives me pause, as we'll be making a five-hour commute each way at least four times a year.
Moving from 17 to 18 inch wheels, (Design to Excel), adds 10g/km to the emissions. There is some extra weight too, of course, but it does suggest the engine is only just powerful enough. Maybe they will introduce the 1.8 at a later date. A real shame that they do not have the nicer digital display on the base Icon version, while not being able to add the extra safety pack, with rear cross traffic alert, on Icon and Design specifications, seems wrong. Personally, I prefer the beeps and digital display, from front and rear sensors, rather than a reversing camera - the camera, in my opinion at least, is something that should be added after parking sensors. The black roof lining, of possibly the most popular trim, Design, is not suitable in a small car - it just makes a plain car look dull. Excel trim is really nice - shame you can't have the smaller 17 inch wheels and gain the lost CO2 back, but big wheels sell, of course. A solar panel might be a nice green option on a vehicle like this. Agree with an earlier comment, that as 2030 approaches, we will see less fuel stations, unless they re-invent their businesses to cover charging, which they could do on larger sites and in areas where there are many terraced houses and flats.
I think all new cars should have the option of at least a Space Saver spare. This is unavailable on this model so I wouldn't even consider it. Toyota usually quite good with this so I think it's an oversite on their part.
@@wayneheyes904 well when i filled the regular Yaris hybrid up i got over 500 miles so i think 450 is easily achievable in this. Then of course when you fill up the tiny tank it’s much cheaper too. That’s the whole point of these.
i think its all wheel drive not 4 wheel drive, i just found that out is this the same cvt as in the Yaris and is it that bad. i have a polo 2017 and was going to stick with polo as there the only ones that still do manual in Australia. i really don't want auto but may not have a choice. especially if i want hybrid

I wish these so called reviewers would stop using the words “scratchy plastics”. It really irritates me. Soft touch materials will scratch and probably tear if you use something sharp on them. Hard plastics are harder wearing. Nothing scratches unless you scratch it with something.
It all depends on your needs are. I was seriously considering getting the chr 2.0 excel over the corolla excel 2.0. But after seeing the chr, it's not that high up and for £4k more isn't worth it over the corolla. I need more power than this Yaris @114bhp.
Annoying trend in car reviews. Review the interior and stuff like touch screens before you get to economy, driving experience, handling etc. Do the important stuff first.
Really not sure about the front end design of this car. Otherwise it is worth a look although I prefer the smaller Yaris or Corolla to look at. We have a Rav4 hybrid and you really notice the elastic band effect of the cvt. The sound deadening is good though. It doesn’t corner very well as there is no lift off engine braking so it tries to go straight on. If you are going downhill be ready with the brakes ! For relaxed driving it is fine.
Why does What car continually compare everything to a VAG car? Do they believe everyone magically knows what the Skoda is like and can make a valuable comparison?
To mpg measuring. How many miles have you driven in 100mpg test? I am quite familiar with hybrids and MPG heavily depends if you start with full battery and stop measuring on low baterry... We have Toyota CH-R in family and i agree, that it is noisy in higher RPM (car screams and nothing is happening like you had neutral gear...) and when driving uphill has heavy issues to reach higher speed. It has for sure its own customers. There are speed limitations and nobody needs to be formula 1 driver. When i tried long distance tours (it is our family car) it reached 5,2 L/100 km - 58 MPG (in summer), because had to recharge few times on trip. I dont understand why are people take as advantige plug-in hybrid against hybrid. You can recharge plug-in hybrid by driving style too AND you can charge it at home with photovoltaic power station... Maybe people are lazy and it takes then too much effford to plug it in...
Had a Yaris Hybrid and agree the CVT box is awful. Has a really loud and high pitched scream when you floor it. Also acceleration is woeful. But, it is totally reliable and it's really fun to feather the accelerator to keep the electric motor going whilst driving in town and economy is amazing. Kit looks plentiful, and like the looks.
I like the Yaris Cross a lot but you forgot to mention the Suzuki Vitara as an alternative. The Vitara won't do 100 mpg but the 4 cylinder boosterjet engine is really punchy and will do 55 mpg. The Vitara is a great car, I have one.
Who cares if the ford puma is slightly better to drive? This Yaris will still be running when the ford had been recycled.
This is true.
Agree, several reviews mention the Puma, but that's not a full hybrid so it's irrelevant for those wanting better mpg.

My first car. I hope i made a good decision
How has it been sofar? I am also planning to buy 2023 model of it? Should i buy it or go sth else?
10 year Toyota Relax warranty is kind of reassuring.
I just ordered one yesterday.
Great review. I got all answers for my qualifications about this car. Thanks for your job. Subscribed.
I much prefer the CVT to the alternative gearboxes, to me its the obvious choice for the installation.
had my 2024 Yaris excel for 3 weeks . love it . just had the Yaris ikon for 3 years . that was great for economy and ride . but the cross is far better . so far about 10mpg lower , but still cold weather . be better in the summer and on a good run . also the cross is heavier . bigger car .
I run the puma atm and love it, especially the mega box, but am very tempted by the Yaris cross especially as retirement is only four years away, this would be perfect for me not fully electric so no range anxiety for those longer journeys, it seems the best of both worlds
I think that would be a very wise upgrade for you.
Added city pack and suv pack with side steps
So far cant fault it.
@@MJS-hj1zk
Yes.
Great video om my next car, just put an order in, Have a normal Yaris...in THE Summer it Will be THE Yaris Cross😎
Can it pull anything? Like a small caravan and i mean small like a pod or just a bit bigger.
Awesome review.... this is one of the best car review channels.
Looking forward to more great content 😎👌
I have tested this car too. The most complete version. The weakest point is the engine. Starting 60 km/h and higher it makes noise during the acceleration. It must be a stronger engine for this car weight. 3-cilinders engine is to small
I liked the exterior design of the color but inside the back seats there is not much space, even so, it is super economical and for trips in the city, it is excellent. Love the reviews done by Doug.
6.50..tbey are not sent soaring to red line, (it hasn't got one), its moving up to the efficiency zone, that's what cvt is about.. Not pace.
So the dash is soft touch, but the door handles are hard plastic. Makes no sense at all. What do you touch more often, the dash or the door handle? What was Toyota thinking?
It’s what you touch the most , a soft door handle would suffer with visible wear within a shorter time span.
Ordered one. Gone premium spec though as the interior looks so much better.
**pssst** _Get a Prius plug in Prime..._
Great honest reviews 👍👏
Bought the Excel in June 23 since then have averaged 75mpg on variety of roads. I am gentle with the right foot.
I get about 3.5 l/100 kms around town, which is not 100mpg….
But I’m very happy with that.
That's 67.2mpg (Imperial gallon); that will do for me 😊.
I had a dynamic and you get heated seats etc but Interior is pretty much the same
I like ur video quality , what kind of camera that you used for this VDO.?
I can handel the fact that the yaris is an suv now, but i cant mentally manage the mustang mach E 😂.
I just test drove one of these, how do you turn the radio off
I like your matching shoes. Goes good with the car paint.
😂😂😂😂
More sense than pure electric imo.
it's been a year and I'm still mad this isn't available in the US
Considering the Yaris Cross, I'm drawn to its generous boot space and SUV aesthetics-perfect for shuttling things to our new vacation house. However, the gas tank size gives me pause, as we'll be making a five-hour commute each way at least four times a year.
Which one will you recommend: Toyota Yaris Cross Dynamic or Honda Jazz Cross?
Thank you.
Yaris cross
Yaris cross excel
And now they don't even do this colour anymore. Why Toyota why have you discontinued this beautiful blue colour?
I think all new cars should have the option of at least a Space Saver spare. This is unavailable on this model so I wouldn't even consider it. Toyota usually quite good with this so I think it's an oversite on their part.
Couldn't agree more - no spare wheel option, no sale!
Odd when the Yaris ships with a space saver.
Bought a spacesaver and jack on ebay so problem solved. There is a space to put it in.
The small fuel tank concerns me you will still need go to fill up loads
At 60mpg that’s a 450 mile range.
@@dd9ag show me the fuel tank full! And let’s see what the actual range is
@@wayneheyes904 well when i filled the regular Yaris hybrid up i got over 500 miles so i think 450 is easily achievable in this. Then of course when you fill up the tiny tank it’s much cheaper too. That’s the whole point of these.
@@dd9ag 500 miles a full tank or when your “driving”
@@wayneheyes904 If you want to press on then you shouldn't expect your fuel to get you as far.
100mpg in town.. Less for combined city/ highway. Go to 8:30 to hear mpg.
Yes, I think I will buy one to tow my Land Rover when it breaks down.
Good idea….because we all know the LR WILL definitely break down!
i think its all wheel drive not 4 wheel drive, i just found that out is this the same cvt as in the Yaris and is it that bad. i have a polo 2017 and was going to stick with polo as there the only ones that still do manual in Australia. i really don't want auto but may not have a choice. especially if i want hybrid
I recently got one in Japan. My wife wanted the auto parking feature - I thought it would be quite gimmicky, but the thing parks itself like a beast.
You married a beast? Wow. You lucky sod.
Very nice and smart format 👍
It would be also nice a GR AWD "mo powa!" version.
Why o why does every practical car need to be sporty and fast….? And please!.. stop whyning about the cvt. you say it’s a plage, it’s necessary. This is the best transmission for the drivetrain. how much time do you spend over 75% trottle?
Great review that.

Those blue sneakers look great. What brand are they?
I wish these so called reviewers would stop using the words “scratchy plastics”. It really irritates me. Soft touch materials will scratch and probably tear if you use something sharp on them. Hard plastics are harder wearing. Nothing scratches unless you scratch it with something.
True! And apparently have been through recycling so can be eco friendly (someone told me, I can't guarantee this!!!)
Is it a worthwhile proposition over the CHR?
Then are the CH-R's blind spots worth it?
This test showed much better real world fuel economy while CHR would have more space in the rear seats, so it depends what fits your needs best.
It all depends on your needs are. I was seriously considering getting the chr 2.0 excel over the corolla excel 2.0. But after seeing the chr, it's not that high up and for £4k more isn't worth it over the corolla. I need more power than this Yaris @114bhp.
@@toyotaprius79 - C-HR specced with blind spot monitoring & rear cross traffic alert solves that.
I traded my Cross in for a i20N as i wanted some excitment while driving. Yaris Cross is great on mpg but lacks any thrills.
My Yaris cross best I got so far MPG 68.8
It might have a small tank, but at 60mpg that's 480 miles!
eCVT is a clear advantage to me
Annoying trend in car reviews.
I am deciding between Yaris Cross and Honda Jazz,I will make up my mind
Where did the click bait title of 100mpg come from no official figures show this
I really like it - not sure I'd buy one but I do like the fact that it has a form of AWD.
I hope they bring this to the USA! I’d buy.
What's the obsession with soft touch, it ages quicky
Why does What car continually compare everything to a VAG car? Do they believe everyone magically knows what the Skoda is like and can make a valuable comparison?
Nice review. Nice trainers.
Does anyone know if this car comes with a spare tire?
Is this version (2022) available to lease (pch) yet? UK customer
SOLID REVIEW/LOVELY COLOUR/GREAT LOOKING SUV
Good video, cheers
Definitely on my shortlist, with the new Jazz.
I’m wandering where the light blue colour car came from as I can’t find it on Toyota uk website. Very nice
Too small for me. Waiting for the Corolla Cross to be launched in Europe.
Why compare to a T-roc, surely a T-cross is a more suitable rival ??
I wish this had a flat bottom steering wheel as if you're on the large side it is a bit tight getting out.
I see the point of the Yaris Cross as an updated Yaris.
Pity the hatchback Yaris has been sculpted with such a sour face. The jdm Prius C with a new "bi-polar" NiMH battery is streets ahead.
Are these coming to America?
Not available in the US
Wow... I actually like the look of it...
Would've been better if you'd put up some comparison numbers for the MPGs so we'd get some context
How many hamburgers are in a mpg? Is it more than a stadium length or just about a barrel of guns?
I've been yesterday to Toyota shop. Car looks great but interior quality is horrible. Door opening handle is Dacia quality or lower.
I like the Yaris Cross a lot but you forgot to mention the Suzuki Vitara as an alternative. The Vitara won't do 100 mpg but the 4 cylinder boosterjet engine is really punchy and will do 55 mpg. The Vitara is a great car, I have one.
Suzuki are bringing out rebadged Toyota hybrids - so that choice of option should change big time.
Only VAG products exist for these journos unfortunately...
They now also have the Vitara Hybrid. Sounds GREAT. I Want 1 !!!
( 'OZ' )
i have a s-cross boosterjet keep it at a steady 60mph on a long run and it turns in 65-68 mpg with no problem
