    You are so amazing with your plants! You honestly have a talent for taking care of them. I love to see them grow! Your potting mix is SOO chunky, and you use a lot of terracotta, so I wonder how often you water your plants that are potted like that? I had to switch out a lot of my terracotta into plastic and I still find myself watering 2x per week (with over 150 plants, I end up watering daily 😅). Whatever you do, it works so well! Thanks for making great content! 💚

    • @ronjakh
      @ronjakh 2 года назад +2

      I know you are asking Fern, but if you’re still having to water twice per week in plastic you need a less chunky mix. More coco coir/soil and moss. You want to be watering once per week. A really chunky substrate requires super high humidity for the roots to stay healthy and hairy, because below 60% moisture in the substrate those hairs die off and the plant can no longer get the water and nutrients it needs 🙂 you also need to consider the pH value because it needs to be at the correct level to avoid nutrient lock-out

    • @sarahinthesun12
      @sarahinthesun12 2 года назад +1

      @@ronjakh Oh yes I make my own mix, it’s very chunky already. This is why I’m having to water 2x per week. But I think you’re onto something with the humidity. I had two humidifiers going in two sections of my home that has 50+ plants each, but the water has so much build up that it left white powdery residue all over everything. And I was filtering my water too (we have awful water where I live). I was thinking of buying 5gal water but I go through it so often and with a chronic pain condition it would be hard to constantly be buying those (plus lots more plastic to waste, which I’m not fond of 😊) but yeah I think you’re right, Fern keeps a good amount of humidity on her plants and it must compensate. We each all have such different environments. Thanks so much for your reply! 💚

    • @ronjakh
      @ronjakh 2 года назад

      @@sarahinthesun12 Absolutely! There are so many variables when it comes to our homes and keeping houseplants ☺️ I would definitely add more fine coco coir or soil to help keep more moisture in the substrate for longer 👌 I can’t use a chunky mix like Fern’s because I don’t have high humidity and I absolutely refuse to water my plants every other day 😂🙈

    This is my favorite! So much fun. Can you do a time capsule prop box of wet sticks? In the first video put a bunch of different nodes in a box. Then open the box in the second video 3 or 6 months later. I am so curious about how long it takes different nodes to sprout. Thanks for the great videos!

    • @allie4457
      @allie4457 Год назад

      Oh boy so Target came out with these cute $5 clear plastic boxes shaped like little houses that everyone went crazy buying up to use as prop boxes, including myself & I hadn’t really ever done a prop box before these & I made the mistake of taking So. Many. Cuttings. I basically left 1-2 inches between corms/cuttings/leaves (for begonia/VSOH/Peperomias that can be done by leaf) and filled the box. I also happen to have adhd, anxiety, and depression so I slack off on plant chores when I’m not sure where to begin and they’ve been in there easily 4-6 months (depending on the box) and they are. WHEW. overgrown would be a true understatement. I taped the tops down so they didn’t pop off so the plants are like insanely shoved in. I use cultured springtails in all my perlite props to prevent mold/rot/nasties & they work too well 😭✋🏻 basically nothing has rotted. The springtails have prospered. The plants all have been begging me to pot them up for months. So far the longest taking ones have been certain dubia runners, Peru runners, VSOH, SOH, variegated philo giganteum & silver sword surprisingly. 😭 I don’t recommend anyone do this unless you want to have a mental break reporting

    LOL, "where am I going to put all these plants that I'm potting" - yesterday, I was working on my plants in my office & raised up the Calatheas right behind my monitors so I have 3 different heights for light. As I turned around to look I was so blown away at the sheer volume! My desk was completely invisible on both sides and the front. I had no idea how many plants were surrounding me! There was 1 tiny little spot open on the closest corner, so I had to put a 4" pot there - I mean why not! This explains why I have no room to write!

    If you cut the blooms off it will focus on rooting more. All of its energy is going to flowering and/or making more roots. Just saying though people like to save the peduncles because they flower from that same peduncle more than once. Just pull out the little *buds/blooms(*depending on if they’ve open yet) and don’t chop the peduncles . All your plants look healthy and cute. Also love your honesty and personality while you’re potting.

    Where are your rings from? So pretty!

      I'd like to know the stories about your rings too. We get to see them all the time and inquiring minds want to know. Maybe another spilling the tea video with the stories of your rings included would be awesome!
      Thanks, Beverly

    The only prop box mysteries I get are basically "is this (common) pothos, scindapsus, or epipremnum stem?" If it's a plant that's more special/rare, I check those props wayyy more than necessary 😆 but I love the idea of a whole mix of props and having to wait for a leaf or 2 to see what it is!
    The silver swords in pon - is it just a cup of pon? I usually see pon in self-watering pots - in a closed system like yours, do you just keep an eye on the water level and keep the bottom centimeter (?) With a pool of water? I'm really wanting to dip my toes into semi-hydro!

      Since Fern hasn’t answered & I also use pon for a lot of plants I wanted to give my 2 cents here!! I have plants in both just pon in cups with no holes (so using a reservoir) & to make it easier to keep an eye on the water level and not have to use as much pon, I do about an inch of Leca at the bottom of the containers, just enough to cover the entire bottom of it so I get a better view & try to keep it at least enough to cover the Leca, maybe about an inch higher if the roots aren’t quite that far down yet. For my net pots with pon I’ll typically use a jar reservoir underneath to fit in perfectly so I get a better view of the roots all the time. Im not a huge fan of using the net pots bc it’s a pain to get them out when they need to move up a net pot size 😭 but I basically keep enough that the ends of the roots are touching the reservoir at all times underneath.
      I’m not a fan of self water pots just because if you’re keeping an eye on the reservoirs you really don’t need the self water ones & I find the roots tend to grow out of the the small holes if you don’t catch them in time & break when repotting. I also don’t like that I can’t see the roots (with most self watering) without pulling them out to check which is a pain with shelves full of plants 😳
      That being said I love perlite, pon and Leca all the same and definitely try out semi hydro!!! I’ve moved almost all my plants and don’t regret it a second :)
