@@Thesquirtlegamer I grew up with Gen 3 and somehow completely missed Gen 4. I remember not even really liking most of the Gen 4 Pokémon that I was aware of back then. I don't really like any of the starters. The only Gen 4 Pokémon that I _really_ love are Floatzel, Luxray, Staravia, Lucario, Weavile, Toxicroak, Chatot, Lopunny, Garchomp, Magnezone, the new Eevees, and some others. One thing I really dislike about the newer games/gens, is that they have a mix of all the pokemon from the previous generations, which becomes overwhelming for me. I love how in B&W it was an entirely new region, with new pokemon, and new pokemon ONLY for the majority of the game. It's exciting to pick out your team with new never-before-seen pokemon that you know almost nothing about. Pokemon Black was my first ever pokemon game and I'm not exaggerating when I say gen 5 literally shaped my childhood. The characters, story, pokemon, music, philosophy, region, graphics, designs, I loved everything, still do. They did a lot of new things for the franchise in gen 5, which like you said, wasn't very well recieved. They never stopped doing new things though. 3D, fairy type and mega evolution were all new in gen 6, and despite how basically everything else in gen 6 is super forgettable, the game was still very well recieved.
New stuff isn't necessarily bad, but it needs to be flashy and gimmicky to be well recieved. So what did they do for gen 7? Big flashy animations with Z moves, and pokemon from outer space (ultra beasts) with eccentric designs. People don't care for Z moves, but there was generally a lot of love for the ultra beasts. Conclusion: people love gimicks and flash, but only when it comes to pokemon design and appearance. So what do they do for Gen 8? Just make pokemon FRIKIN' HUGE WITH BIG FLASHY MOVES and see how the fans react. People are STILL not happy? Lets cut out flash and gimicks entirely. They want nostalgia? Lets go back in time!
I don't think any of the pokemon games are bad, but I know they can be better, so I'm left a little dissapointed sometimes.
What will make the games enjoyable is an immersive and visually pleasing world to explore, inspiring rivals, characters with depth, challenging and intriguing antagonists, lovable pokemon designs, both old and new, a well written story, customization and of course good soundtrack. It's not that pokemon games don't have any of those qualities, but too many pokemon games do not have enough of them. Games that sell and games that are enjoyable aren't always the same.

I'm genuinely surprised that gen 5 had the worst sales. Everyone I knew who had a ds (and didn't have it just sitting away in a drawer) got Black/White, and I don't think I heard anyone say anything negative about it, other than genwunners hating on boring designs because "haha ice cream cone" and "haha garbage bag". For me and many others it was one of our favourite generations, and easily the one we played the most of. Gen 6 on the other hand, while many of us bought 3DS's for, easily turned a lot of us into game critics.

It’s not just that BW failed. Mobile games have practically overshadowed the amount of money traditional games make. If you listen to the language used by GF devs, it’s clear they all are obsessed with the money made in mobile games and are trying to figure out how to replicate that in Pokémon: low level effort, games designed for 2-4 minute play intervals, and ease of access for people to come back in and pick up and play without much effort. GF thinks people no longer want the dungeon crawling design of Gens 1-5, but instead simple brainless gameplay just like modern mobile games.
In sum, I think mobile gaming ruined Pokémon more than the failures of BW.

I was against this change at first too, but now I appreciate it. Add in all the cool animations they put in, megas in gen 1, pokemon following you again, and new content. I'd argue on the contrary that B/W actually had the most opportunity to succeed of any Pokemon title before it. Since the breakout success of RBY, Pokemon had been relied upon as a system mover for Nintendo's handhelds until the Switch, with each generation coming out a little over a year after each system. B/W didn't have to sell people on a multi-hundred dollar purchase to play it, they already owned DS's, they just didn't sell themselves as well as Diamond and Pearl sold themselves and systems.

The soundtrack quality took a major nosedive with 99% of the tracks being not memorable at all. Littleroot town was lit though.
HG/SS were definitely one of the best remakes of any game and truly did the originals justice while adding enough content to keep things fresh and unique, but not overwhelming. Diamond/Pearl/Platinum were decent enough and enjoyable for a single playthrough, but still could not match the quality of HG/SS. I was hoping for more of an aging up in the story content a little bit (eg more emotional/philosophical). I loved the heck out of Gen 5. I was so amazed by the animated sprites, and even though many Pokemon were ugly, they also had some really cool ones, and seeing how every Gym was so unique. I dropped my jaw when I heard the "last Pokemon" and "low HP" themes, they made the battles feel more intense and alive. The music in general for Gen 5 felt so inspired and adventurous; I think it has my favorite themes on the franchise for certain routes and trainers.
The only few downsides for this generation for me are the lack of minigames (Musicals were a massive downgrade to Contests, and Entralink is kinda fun, but not as exciting as Secret Bases), a linear region, and the offensive power creep. Besides those personal issues, Unova gave us amazing stuff like seasons, unlimited TMs, cool online additions (Battle seasons, Dream World, Pokedex/C-Gear customization) and pretty epic moments like the Victory Road and Team Plasma League invasion.
And that's only speaking about BW1, because BW2 gave us so much more like every trainer getting animations, Join Avenue, a bigger region, Challenge Mode, PWT, Black Tower / White Treehollow, custom Gym themes, cool callbacks to BW1 like N's Pokemon and flashbacks, Medals... they seriously went all out with those games.
Too bad XY were so rushed and ORAS didn't went as ambitious as HGSS for remakes, and that Ultra SM weren't DLC instead. They could have gone a very good way on the 3DS era if BW were received better.

My main gripe with BW1 was the complete lack of Gen 1-4 mons in the Unova dex, it made the game feel a little too foreign even for something that was meant to be a reboot in some sense. With BW2, the musical and pokestar studios were lame downgrades from contests. I didn't like the low HP music overall, kind of killed the flow of the battle music.
Besides those, I think both BW/BW2 were masterpieces and quite frankly works of genius. The story in BW was undeniably the best they've ever offered, B2W2 really felt like a proper, well conceived sequel, and BW2 did fix the regional dex issue. Even besides the story, they actually invested in lore/worldbuilding with things like the relic castle/abyssal ruins, and left just enough unsaid that people are still making fan theories to this day.

@@MrBGP006 TL;DR - Sun and Moon are okay to play, Sword and Shield are average at it's best which really upsets me, and Scarlet and Violet city looking good but it's a waiting game at this point. Rambling down below!
Sun and Moon was decent installments until they put the "Ultra" on the game thinking that it's a sequel or some sorts but GameFreak got really lazy and mostly left the game untouched while screwing with some story elements. Most noticeably with Lusamine and Lilly having a water down role in the "Ultra" games. The add-in content helps with the post game but it should of been DLC which the 3DS systems can easily do. 7th gen have a good standing by me but overall it isn't a good generation for replayablility due to the constant hand-holding and story driven the games are. Fairly easy games though with a few difficulty spikes here and there.
8th gen I skipped out entirely due too all the BS gamefreak/TPC thrown at us and half of the fans blindly accepted it. Story even more barebones than X/Y (In-game wise), Dexit happens for "Quality and balance" but they reused the same models and animations for basically every previous mon Gen 7 and downwards so what was the point (And no, I'm not competitive by any chance but I still wanna bring my Samurott in Galar. Cant do that now!), Graphics and textures are just and eye-soar to look at half the time (And other areas it looks really good, lack of time I will guess), the layout of the region is just a straight line with little to no branching pathways nor a post game area to explore... If you only have the base game. The 2 DLC's should of been in the game at launch but you know, lack of time and rushed development. It's a shame because it's a step up from the base game galar that is locked away at $30. I can find entirely jRPG games within a year on steam and other platforms that have a discount that is far better than Sword/Shield in many aspects. I hate saying this shit because I was going to buy the Double Pack on day one when Sword/Shield got released. I don't regret switching to other jRPS at this time!
And 9th generation is...? Wait and see, A bit cautious about it but strangely optimistic for what have been seen. I know some people are just loosing there fucking minds (Neutral stands), as a kid I would but being into this franchise by Black and White over 10 years ago is getting harder now to just be hyped. I don't follow that shit no more because in recent years it taught me that most of it don't even life up to expectations at all. Shit I still get excited playing Boom Boom Rocket and Forza Motorsport 4 on my Xbox 360 evetime. Again, Ill wait and see for this time.

I'm late to the party but I genuinely didn't like the removal of gyms. I think the gym battles can be revamped, for example the final tournament in Sw/Sh prior to the champ fight, but the trials were boring. You fight one stronger than normal pokemon and that's it. Legends took that same thing and made it much more fun as a single pokemon boss battle.
On the other hand, gyms and champions are huge for me in mainline Pokemon games. You can change the rest of the equation as much as you want and make gyms and champions have very different roles in each region or society, but I feel like that's what makes a game mainline. I also felt the trials didn't leave much room for story in SM.
Maybe I also am very critical and bored by the trials because of how ridicuously easy Pokemon games have been since Gen 5? I seem to just rush to the end since I enjoy completing the Pokedex and shiny hunting more than the plot with recent installments (Legends excluded).

Even though Gen 3 included my first Pokémon game as a kid, Gen 5 was the one that had the biggest impact on me. The music, the sprites, the combination of 2D and 3D graphics, the compelling narrative, the interesting region… It really was the original Pokémon games at its finest. The implementation of seasonal changes was really under appreciated and should definitely be brought back because it made repeatedly exploring the region even more fun! Also every character from the rivals to the evil team to the gym leaders were all super interesting. BW 1 and 2 came out while I was in high school and if anything it was a massive revitalization for the series. Half the people in all my classes, fully ranging from freshmen to seniors (9th-12 grade, all 4 years of high school in the states) were almost constantly playing them at every chance. People were trading and battling, there were tournament clubs started up that were never there before, and every single person who I asked about them loved them. In fact I've never met anyone, either in person or online, who had anything negative to say about BW:1/2. So even after watching your entire video, I have to disagree with you that Black and White killed the franchise, they were just too good for the consecutive games to live up to. I mean X and Y were such huge letdowns, and Sun and Moon just made it worse. They even tried to play off the success of the gen 5 sequels being so damn good with Ultra sun and moon, but the entire 2 generations just felt extremely rushed.

US/UM was a blatant cash grab and could have been a simple free update, hell even indie games release updates that put these "sequels" to shame. SW/SH was.... God... It exists i guess, the worst mainline game hands down, no contest there. The Gen4 remakes... I don't even acknowledge that they exist, funny enough due to the need of the update that implements the new music, bug fixes and the post game it will be the worst way to play a Gen 4 game as soon as the servers go down in a few years lol. I think one of the main problems is that selling less copies (which it was bound to do while being a new and relatively innovatiive title) is considered a failure. Black and White was a great title BECAUSE it innovated, but BECAUSE it innovated it would of course wind up with less sales (note: it still made good profit), that was the entire point. The fault isn't even in the fans that didn't buy it, its with The Pokemon Company which sees anything but ever-expanding growth as the only sustainable way, and thus saw B&W as a failure when it felt like Gamefreak put some real effort in. In the end The Pokemon Company has take complete control over Gamefreak, the franchise has become the game, not the other way around.
Fun fact: Pokemon is the HIGHEST GROSSING FRANCHISE IN THE WORLD, stop treating them like they can't do better.
I don't know how to end this... stop buying things that don't look up to your own standards I guess. Shitting on fans of the previous games for not buying B&W is also kind of a dick move. Selling less copies while still making a profit is also not a failure.

I find it interesting that u complaint about the rival Hugh in BW2 or that it feels like a stepback to you, cuz imo Hugh is one of the more interesting rivals for having motivations besides "me strong me defeat you me best of all the people around me" which Gary Oak, Silver, Berry & Cheren have going for it until that point. While yes Hugh was a rival to become strong to.. but it wasnt for selfish reasons. The Purrloin that was stolen, as been stated at least 2 times in BW2, was his grandpa's and a present for his younger sister. It migh the easy to dislike him cuz "he is all about that Purrloin and being angry so often" but can u blame him after what comes across as a trauma to him the way he is acting around Team Plasma which he thought has been dispatched some years ago?
Another thing I like to point out is that ur criticsm about "new character feel invalid due to the old characters going around" is not holding much candle and feels like u rushed parts of the story about say Colress to not understand his motives. He especially is actually quite egoistical, for him, even team Plasma is a tool to be used for his research on expanding pokemon's limits and to find those limits and even craving evolution to it is what he is all about, heck after he was defeated on his own airship (it is hinted that he basically gave Team Plasma their power to reform and for the sake of to see how far he can go with his experiments, in a moral gray way I might add, he creates them the airship and helps Plasma terrorize Unova) he wondered if his methods are even that effective on raising and experimenting pokemon in a more "tool" way. And as seen in say Pokemon Sun & Moon, he definitly learnt from it! He isn't a clichee mad scientist trope, just a rather complex character with his morals which is why I appreciate him and.. kinda wish they didnt brought G-Cis back, like the climax could have been after his defeat that he just calls off Team Plasma (which he actually did cuz G-Cis apparently wasnt the complete driven force in the reformed party) after the kyurem & zekrom/reshiram fusion stuff and just walks away looking for himself, which some would say would make him a war criminal but since G-Cis was there.. a tooth for a tooth basically, to have a black sheep to push over the part that was more or less meant for Colress himself.

Even gen 1 was never a real challenge for a five year old, you just keep training until you're able to win. It's always been about fun, not proving your elite gamer skills or something silly like that. Arceus has a lot of great leaps toward being more fun than any of the old games, like eliminating out-of-world cutscenes for battles, and letting you distract and catch from outside of combat.

Honestly, I feel like the reason why the “Funny Battle Gimmicks” strategy increased sales better than BW ever did is because the majority of the fan demographic for Pokemon are kids.
Kids understand _”Ohhhh sickkk, it’s an even more badass version of my favorite Pokemon”_
However, Kids don’t understand _”What is the most ethical way to treat Pokemon?”_ because their sense of morality most likely hasn’t even developed yet.
As a kid who was playing Pokemon at late BW2 to Early X, I was more drawn to X because “oMg, iT’s AsH gReNiNjA or iT’s MeGa cHaRiZaRd.” However, being slightly older than that time, I feel drawn to BW because of the story and music.

@@Pobsworth at this point its not game freak’s fault anymore for producing a bad game; it’s the pokemon company’s fault. they push the pokemon developers to create new games within what seems to be less than a two year deadline. what makes it even worse is that game freak was working on pokemon legends arceus at the same time as sword and shield, which is why swsh looks like garbage.
the pokemon company doesnt seem to care at all, as we’ve already gotten a gen 9 reveal. making it worse, the release date is late 2022, most likely late november as thats when they usually release their core series games.

BW, BW2, and PLA...All some of the best pokemon experiences of all time.
But why is that? Is it because of the story? The characters? The gameplay?
No, none of that. All of these games have something in common that makes them the best games in the series.

Ironically, you CAN actually go into most of those buildings. And there are human NPCs, and they fixed most of the issues aside from the weird purplish shadows.
I don't think it's as good as B/W but Legends: Arceus isn't a bad game.

its a good game if you compare it to previous pokemon games.
If you compare it to other games that come out in 2022, though, the game is terrible.

@@Pobsworth you can't compare games which aren't even in the same category, but I do admit in graphics and filling up open world PLA lacked that's why it is fair to criticize it on that basis but if you look at its features, game mechanics , adventure vibes and small side quest which fill ups the flaw while giving true BW fun.

Also, Z-moves were creative for me. You can do a lot of shenanigans with the Z-status moves. BUT you can also use it up to do a nuke attack one time, because sometimes you only need that little bit if power in order to take down a hard to beat opponent Pokemon in competitive.

The argument is that B&W (and the sequels) were the best because of how much effort they had put into them, and despite that effort they didn't sell well so future games just stopped having that effort put in because it wasn't worth it

gen 5 was my first gen, allow me to give my input
yes, tepig and his entire evolution line are shit. i hate them.
samurott is chill, not my favorite design ever but simplistic yet slightly imposing
serperior is my favorite of the three because i thought snivy looked badass and serperior was literally just a snake, one of my favorite animals (kinda boring tho, for sure)
i find that a lot of people take issue with gen 5 pokemon that i think are fine. klink and its evo tree are kinda rough and simple in concept, but they aren't anywhere close to the worst. i always saw musharna as kinda... ephemeral? if that's the right use for that word?
the embryo crew is kinda weird but i think it's weird in a lovable way
and the list goes on and on, like everyone's favorite ice cream cone
i just don't think it really deserves all the bashing it gets from older pokemon vets and clueless kids that never played it. games were fun, characters were (at least, and at least to me) memorable in their own ways with lots of interesting pokemon and a fun endgame with lots of neat legendaries, a fun mythic, and the second game even added the DNA splicers which i believe is one of the coolest legendary gimmick ideas they've put in the main series. not to mention EMOLGA
    FLYING PIKACHU IS BASED
and people so often disregard mons like blitzle, drilbur, timburr, joltik, ferroseed, litwick etc. etc.
and who could not like stunfisk? so precious
