Sitting at my desk trying to get this sound down, and my German Shepherd came running confused and tackled me. Perhaps he's more German than I thought! In all seriousness, thank you for this video!
Best tips ever. Thanks Daria! I really struggled with this vowel and it took me weeks and weeks of practice until I got to the point I can pronounce it well enough. For me it's the most difficult part of the Russian pronunciation.
This sound doesn't exist in spanish, but we have the interjection "uy", that sounds exactly "уи". This can be used for a nice surprise or pain at the same time. So if it's a surprise, you say "уиии". But if it's pain, you ocasionally close your mouth (because of the situation), and actually you say it as a long "ыыыы". Everybody listening to you will understand that you forgot your keys inside the house, or you didn't win the lottery for just one number, or something like that :) although the sound Ы is not used at all in spanish.
I know this is a very long time after you left this comment but imaging having no tongue when saying it has actually allowed me to make the sound. I can't thank you enough!
You are such a good teacher! I am an American speech therapist. Now I have such empathy for my students. It is so difficult to make a new sound...especially if your mouth is 64 years old!
Thank the lucky stars I found this channel. I'm one of those who've been studying Russian for a few years but still have *a lot* of trouble pronouncing this letter and speaking in general. #bless thank you!
To clarify, these methods allow you to get a not very clear sound, although very close to the sound Ы. Ы and У are not related. In rapid speech, you may find a similar sound in the phrase 'We will going to drink whisky' = Wы wыll going to drink whыsky The main thing is not to make the consonant sound before Ы softer, otherwise you will get the sound И ('ee').
Are you a speech therapist? I'm a singer used to analyzing sounds. I speak French and Greek and English. That makes this a little easier. Thank you, good job.
If somebody still cannot pronounce it, Try to swallow your tongue, but leaving tip of it touching that place under bottom teeth. The sound you got is not really ordinary ы. NOW gradually relax tongue until you've got ы.
Believe it or not, this sound somewhat exists in American (and possibly other variants of) English, and English speakers pronounce it all the time. It's pretty much the sound of the isolated "i" in the word "six". Just analyze carefully how Americans in particular pronounce the word "six" and it's probably the closest sound to the Russian "Ы". Stretch out the word "six" for a couple of seconds, accentuating the depth of the vowel by opening up the jaw, and this pretty much puts your mouth and tongue in the correct position to pronounce that letter. Change it by saying "six" but begin with a "T" sound and not an "S" sound. Then omit the "X" sound at the end completely, and you should have a much better pronunciation of the word for "you" in Russian than most of the complicated guides out there. Another exercise. Say the word "thin" or "this" with an American accent a couple of times, then start dropping the "TH" sound. Congratulations, you're 95% closer to pronouncing "Ы" properly. Source: I be Russian but became bilingual in English from a very early age, so I've tried to explain this sound before to English speakers on many occasions.
"и" is never like "ы" or vice versa. Can you indeed give examples of songs and words in them where you think you hear "и" instead of "ы" ? I'm puzzled because changing "ы" to "и" usually completely changes the meaning like "мыло" (soap) becoming "мило" (nice), so we hear the difference very well.
Очень Спасибо. I've tryied it in the way of many brazilian teachers, because I am brazilian, and only in your way I managed to fix this. So thank you very very much
Ana, you must be from the Balkans =)) You have this sound. When you say “Srbija”, “trg”, “drvo”, “krv” and so on, you pronounce clear “ы” before “r” =))
My teacher taught me by making the whole class stand up and at the same time try to push the walls out of the room to expand it - the sound that you make when you're trying to do something impossibly hard is an ы haha
I have another way of explaining it that helps some people. Pretend as if your tongue does not exist, and make a mix between the и and short "i" sound (like the word "bit"). It's hard to explain in text, but it may help some.
As I try to pronounce /bI/ correctly, I feel that pushing the tongue up and backwards is more like a move that prepares its coming forward again. It is like the winding of a spring in order to make it springy. So, the tongue goes back to be able to articulate the next phoneme or word in a more clear, vigorous and uniterrupted flowing manner. For instance in "A TbI KAK?" with the tongue back after TbI, we are ready to articulate KAK more clearly and emphatically. Is this the right approach?
so turns out i've been making this sound my entire life. i came to this video because everyone was saying they have trouble with it, and it came so easily to me that i thought i was doing it wrong
Есть ещё один способ. Начну издалека, когда я учился в музыкальной школе, мы с группой учеников пели разные звуки под аккомпанемент пианино и когда учительница играла на низких нотах - "И" само собой превращалось в "Ы".
Is it the same idea as the pronunciation of pinyin character ü? With that one, you start by pronouncing the "ee" sound, then you change your month's shape to like it would be if you were to make the "oo" sound
I thought it's similar to the short mixture of ü and i in the German word "wirklich" or "wirken" PS (after I saw the phonetics): ... in the southern dialect
второй вариант: при произношении звука И приподнимаем корень языка вверх и отводим назад?Мне кажется, еще нижняя челюсть немного вперед выдвигается? /Спасибо!
Actually the Pinyin vowel "ü" is [y] in IPA and more fronted and rounded than ы which is usually [ɨ] (recording here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_central_unrounded_vowel ) like the "i" in zhi, chi, shi, and ri. I spoke a Southwestern Mandarin dialect at home that doesn't have retroflex consonants so every "r" was omitted and I grew up hearing [ɨ] by itself whenever 日 (rì) was spoken. I learned this by reading up on Mandarin phonology to try to apply it to learning Russian. To my surprise ы was mentioned in this article. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Chinese_phonology#Syllabic_consonants

Hahaha that's pretty accurate!
I know, right? I also figured "Hey, that sounds like our uy! Great! Got it" Hahaha. Greetings from Mexico.
In portuguese-brazilian is like: ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ or ââââ
0:41 " *when i pretend to smile in a Public Party* "
Your pronunciation lessons are amazing, thank you. Keep going
yeah basically you just say the english E and pretend you are gagged or your tongue has been cut off
Yeah that seems to be the most helpful metaphor for me honestly
This made me laugh lmao
Е
or pretend that you're drunk
instead of ee, say ee+ââ
that is equal to: ÄÄÄÄÄ!

Живу в России 36 лет. Никогда не понимал, как выговарить букву "Ы". Теперь знаю. Спасибо вашему каналу!
I had troubles to explain how to pronounce "ы". Now I know! Brilliant:)
OMG BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!! Ы has been the hardest part for Russian for me. The smiling thing is perfect. Close your teeth too helps.

Similar to "I ı" in Turkish. Examples: Bırak (бырак) [leave], Isı (ысы) [heat], Işık (Ышык) [light].

Thank you Daria for being an outstanding teacher.

this is a hard noise but these tips are helpful. the hardest one i still find is to make this sound after T
U can produce ы starting from the r sound as in "weird" or "flower" and therefore introducing a "i" with your lips.

ы is close to the sound I make when I feel uncomfortably itchy (what's Russian for "someone please scratch my back"?).
It's a lot like the French [y], a mixture of [i] and [u] or a schwa plus [i].
But anyway it is more like [ы].
I thought it's similar to the short mixture of ü and i in the German word "wirklich" or "wirken"

More simple: To pronounce Ы, prepare all your mouth (lips and tongue) to say a "g" like in "goal", and say and "i" (ee) sound like in "free".

А как правильно произносится буква ъ?
Did you ever do a second video using ы in sentences? Maybe I missed it.
omg I think I forgot about it!
Is the Russian ы like the German ü?
awesome explanation! The toothbrush method is useless though IMO .
it's just to understand where the tongue should be. usually people don't understand it
Basically like pulling your tongue back as you make an "ooo" sound?
So it's almost like the unstressed 'e' in Portuguese(at least the European variety).
Finally I get this!
Okay I'm able to do it, but it's so hard to do it in the middle of a sentence, I have to literally brace my mouth for it hahaha
Of course
