    • @djtravismcguire
      @djtravismcguire 2 года назад +1

      Very true. Played on a prime 4 using the standalone function, no laptop to a crowd I DJed for before, they couldn't tell a difference. I use VDJ because back in the days of CD's and the transition to doing digital. Back then, you couldn't rip CD's in mp3 format, only wma files. Serato at the time didn't support wma, Virtual did. So I stuck with my purchase. All that matter at the end of the day is satisfied clients & that phat @$$ paycheck.

  • @goodman8601
    @goodman8601 3 года назад +36

    The client doesn't care about if spin on 12's or on a ddj1000, djwego, serato or vdj. The client expects you to deliver quality work with music and lighting. The client wants a great dj to deliver a great performance no mater what gear you use.

      Yeah manual DJING requires much more skill, CDJs introduced the easy mode buttons and made it so you didn't have to use fundamentals that were a serious part of the craft, forget doing double ups or looping with 3 turntables it's a button now, I get annoyed because I actually learnt all forms of DJING and the ability to do manual double ups, the next gen usually scoff at vinyls 💯

    software and controllers and mixers are all just tools that help a dj . At the end of the day the point is to play good music, to play the right music at the right time, and to deliver good party energy adding to the event. Sure good mixing and scratching and all that jazz makes it more but not always necessary especially depending on the various types of events people play at.

    • @fidelpena5235

      Well said. The tools don’t define the DJ. The basic fundamentals of mixing and knowing how to read a crowd and using your instincts do

    ON POINT about the vinyl segment. As an “old DJ” that carried cases and cases of vinyl in and out of venues 6 nights a week in the 80s and 90s - I don’t know ANY DJ that would choose to do that on a regular basis, unless you’re a “bar” DJ with a handful of pre-selected tunes in one case. Love the technology available today.

    You're 100% on point here Barr and as far as the Virtual DJ mission statement, I've never read it and could care less about it. I love Virtual DJ because it does exactly what I need it to do, not because of some mission statement on a website. But yeah, another great video here. I loved it!!!

    I am a professional full time DJ, musician and professional sound engineer. The point I am making is you can use whatever software you like to use VDJ , SDJ or anyother Software as long u can keep people on the dance and do your job professionally and know how to do good mix then you are good to go . And As from a client perspective they dont cares what type of software you use. As long as u are good on what u r doing and don't messed up the dance floor rythm and get paid good u r good to go..👌

    DJ Barr I totally agree with you. I been Djing for over 38 years..New York City of course in my generation I started with vinyl turntables. Now in this generation things have changed and as an old-school DJ I had to except it and teach new DJs about how we did it back in the days and it’s a totally different ballgame now with all the new controllers that we have now so salute to DJ Barr🎧 Much love Dj Rich.

  • @KENAXION88
    @KENAXION88 3 года назад +8

    If you came up to me and said that you DJ with vinyl's and turntables, I would be impressed. But then if you proceeded to tell me that what I'm doing isn't "real" and I'm not a "real" DJ because I'm not using vinyl, than you're not a real DJ as far as I'm concerned. Because if you were you'd recognize that times change, technology changes, music changes, etc. You don't tell someone they're not a real driver because they're using an automatic instead of a manual.
    Not only am I and many others not in a position to afford the turntables needed (along with all the additional peripherals required), I also am unable to afford the records required to actually do it. And records are a little difficult to come by nowadays if you haven't noticed. I've downloaded all of my music for at least the last 20 some odd years, I've never owned a record because I had no need to.
    Ultimately my response is this: If you can beat match well, read a crowd, mix well, are able to improvise, and maintain a crowds energy, then you're a DJ. Your approval isn't needed or wanted.

  • @DH-en4th

    Thank you DJ Barr!!! I really needed to hear a popular, experienced DJ address this issue with some compassion.
    I'm a long time karaoke host, who started my own business a year ago & I'm trying to learn traditional DJing because everyone keeps asking me to do weddings, birthday parties, etc. I'm very excited to learn new skills & do different types of events. I'm already familiar with the songs people want, able to curate playlists, etc but the technical side of mixing is proving more difficult than I anticipated. I've heavily invested in my equipment and legal music, but it's not in my financial best interest to invest in turntables & vinyl. The customers are super happy with the events I've done so far, but I feel ashamed and anxious that I won't ever be a "real DJ" unless I can master these mixing skills I'll never really need for the open-format/non-club events I've been doing. There are plenty of talented, experienced traditional DJs in town & they are on another level. I have the utmost respect for them and their hard-earned talent.
    I haven't had anyone confront me on my novice DJing, but I have put considerable research into the DJing culture & it's nice to hear someone saying anything other than if you don't use Serato & turntables you're a fake DJ and basically stealing gigs from real DJs. I just want to make people happy & I'm getting gigs faster than I can master this new field I'm breaking into.

  • @wiped4489

    I don't really have an opinion on vinyl is dead. Every pro DJ I've come across uses digital equipment these days. I guess that says everything. I know I see people still using turntables and that's cool. I started out on turntables and I'm also old enough to have had LP vinyl as the go to format of the day. What I really dislike is when people say you're not a real dj because you use software, or you use a CDJ-2000nxs. As long as you can DJ well using whatever format you use, that's all that matters.

    Good shit bro! I prefer Serato mainly because of easy change overs and plug and play. I dont have to go in and change sound settings, key commands or restart the program when I plug the controller in. I agree with everything said here. One thing I think that should have been mentioned is that when new to djing you should learn beat matching and phrasing by ear. There's still a need to know these things whether its when beat matching off another dj, when the next song should come in in PROPER phrasing and honestly you need to be able to recognize when the screen waveforms are not actually working for you. After learning that, use the new tools at hand but I always teach our new djs to do that first.

    Really enjoyed your video..I use to DJ with Vinyl...in 1978...playing on 2 Marantz turntables, using a pioneer mixer with knobs to mix back and forth to songs...cued them up, and beat mixed them too with direct drive turntables....and NOW using the digital software and equipment, I am having so much fun beat mixing old school and new music. Makes the wedding events really pop with grand pa and grand ma dancing to a 70'd tune, and beatmix right into something current...I like Virtual DJ, and Serato too..dont have a favorite yet. I don’t think so Barr!!! Vinyl is not dead!!!! I know a lot of record collectors that are hard core vinyl!!!You will not find some songs on any record pool!!! Some songs only exist on record!!!! My personal opinion I grew up on records and still use them and use Serato. There is a city called Santa Ana in Ca there is a club called Mikes place and they will not let you use Serato you have to DJ with real records!!! It’s truly a passion and Art I’m proud I grew up in a era to see DJs like the beat Junkies do tricks with records look it up!!! I also grew up listening to Power 106 DJ Eman in the 90’s was one of the best and it was awesome to see him in action flipping records and mixing with doubles playing the instrumentals and acapella’s scratching and telling a story with records.
    It’s about the sound also digital will NEVER sound as good as analog!!!! Buy a record and listen to it maybe you’ll understand!!!

      @Raul Hernandez ... I don't think he was literally saying vinyl is dead; as in no one at all plays or owns them. Of course, you'll always have purist holding on to traditions. You still have people playing 8-track cartridges & cassette tapes. Like records, these things take up a lot of space. Some folks are still using win-XP! There's a difference between playing records as an audiophile indulgence Vs playing them in a club where people could care less. Any perceived sonics to those with golden ears, will be lost in a club environment with screaming party goers.

    • @AlexMoschopoulos
      @AlexMoschopoulos 3 года назад

      The question is how much NEW music can you find on analog vinyl compared to digital.
      A club can be "analog vinyl only" and I'll assume it's some flashback club that never plays new music.

    DJ softwares are just TOOLS that help the dj to make his work, they can allow to make the mixing more creative and also more easy. Yes more easy, that is not only good for beginner djs, also is really good for professional djs too. As a wedding dj, I would love to have a software that gives you way more assistance (I didn’t like automatic mixing) to make all the mixes sound perfect, and aside from being focused on getting the mixes right i could take the time to do a better song selection and find more creative ways to blend songs. Also weddings are really tiring as long gigs, and if i can make my work easier to not get tired as fast, that is also a really good plus.

    What are you talking about have you used DJ software?? I used it before Traktor first Dj software, had video out some cool effects especially the beat grid effect, looping and faders. It was great to get started on a young digital DJ. I already had two turntables, a mixer and a big stack of white label records. Great channel been smashing all the content.

    Been DJing for over 30 years. I’ve used wax (not timecode, lol), Serato, Traktor and used to clown DJs for using VDJ. A friend let me play around with his VDJ and I haven’t looked back! You’re right. A good dj can mix on whatever software or gear is in front of them.

    I think it's a lot heavier to Mix on VDJ than on Traktor, i also Like the fact that the Songs load in extremely faster than in any other Programm and you dont Need to Analyse them, also a good Feature for the mobile DJ is that when you write Something in the Search, your whole Computer gets searched for it and very fast

    The reason why time code vinyl is still better than controllers is the mechanism behind turntables. It allows you to feel the music with your fingers. The only controller that I feel has done a good job at imitating this is the Rane 12s and those are not necessarily a controller system.

    Same with the derby style lights. Had clients who hated them and have clients who love them. I will say the higher profile clients dont like the derby style lights that I have dealt with.
    You're totally right. Couldn't have said it better.

    I was active from 1992 til 2008. Spun on vinyl (actual vinyl), timecode vinyl, CDs, timecode CDs, and of course MIDI.
    Only thing I always knew is average people care about a good set. Nothing more. Some want to hear their favorite tunes, others want to be taken on a journey and shown cool new music. The only people who care if you're on vinyl or computer, sync or manual are other DJs and the few geeks who think that matters.
    Nowadays I spin sets for fun, make mixes to listen to on my phone, etc. I'm currently using Traktor Pro 3 with some cheap Behringer controllers. I'll use sync even despite years of manual beatmatching experience (which I pull out when sync fails me). I'm not thinking about if I'm "keepin it real" in some sense of a DJ thing, but thinking about what tunes I'm going to play and how I make things flawlessly work together.
    DJing is MORE than just beatmatching or using vinyl. It's on having good taste, the ability to quickly think about how you'll take the crowd on a journey, control the mood, and even technically to have solid BLENDS. Not just kick drums aligned, but EQs and volumes working so the two tunes compliment one another and flow beautifully to one another.
    People worry too damn much about the wrong things. I know when I listen to a DJ, I care less about how he's playing or what medium he's using, but WHAT he is playing.

    I still buy records vinyl up to this day especially I have technics turntables 1200 and I'm 35 and they still living. But at the same time have to move with the times especially when today music is up today making dj much easier if you bring your turntables or controller and speakers and a laptop and your good to go. It's just I'm concerned about djs is how they play the music in front of crowds of people.

    Waz up Mr Dj Barr... I enjoy watching every single video you put out... I do have some minor opinions differences on somethings... but for the most part your on point... its your opinion and we watch your channel to learn from your experiences as well as others on other channels... I do appreciate the time you put in... its alot of work and it truely helps out a lot... even us veteran Djs .. I have always said your never to old to learn a new trick and I also want to congratulare you on your success with this channel. I just want to point out one thing that really bothers me... I feel that a real Dj will never use Sync (via button or looking at the lines on the Screen ) It really takes no talent to use any type of software to Sync. Now in regards to vinyl... I do agrree with you on that. It does not matter what form of music format you use as long as you beat match by ear. Thats the real way to Dj... using OG vinyl or coded vinyl doesnt matter... using Cdjs or controlers doesnt matter... using a midi device ... who cares... just beat match by ear... no sync is the real respectable way. Other than that Im ok with new Djs using sync if it gets them to learn... but to say that their Djs and using Sync... No sorry.. it takes skill and talent to really mix the songs well together. Well just my opinion on thar matter. Keep up the Awesome work you do. I look forward to more videos from your channel

I Saved & saved & saved & when i finally had enuff i bought the decks & got the mixer. So saying after spending all that $$$ & putting in all that hardwork,now that the equip is only rated as "hobby" gear? wow!! Nice 2 know there really are peeps out that appreciate the art in djn then having trax pre bpm & keyed & sync & all tht 4 u with all the latest fx & tools, etc. Don't get me wrong..yes signs of the times & I use that equip as well..but i do rem & appreciate where all these "gadgets" come. & hey..if there is ever a major network outage..lets see who would be turning away "vinyl " djs! 😅😅😅😂😂😂😁😁

      @@djadonica1995 Yep i had to carry all those crates of albums back in the day like I said had to 30sec beat time everything and match beat two of the same records to get that sound effect it makes. I have changed with the times and technology luckily for me I'm an I.T guy so the transition to laptops, controllers and everything else has been easy for me plus I don't have take crates now days. :-)

    @Barr I agree with you about a the time code a d vinyl point. I started Djing in Queens NY when I was 11yrs young on tech 1200s. With the sticker cue points and all lol... I stopped Spinning in my late 20s and after yrs of not doing so, I got back into it but I had to adapt to digital mixing. I however, Do not use serato, I am and have been a Vdj user for years. Simply because I don't see the point of paying for add-ons on serato that come naturally on vdj. I seriously hate sersto users for shitting on vdj users making them feel less than. Auto dj feature is there but it doesn't mean you have to use it.. just like the sync button. Its up to the user (Dj) to choose whether or not to use it. All I can say about that is that if they do choose to use it, then they're not constantly practicing and contributing to the culture that is djing. Regardless if you're using 1200s with a pyramid scratch master or and all in one controller. Being a dj is expensive enough without having to pay for add-ons that come free with a different software. This is a war that will never end. You have your serato fans and you have your vdj fans like myself. I just wont ever shit on someone cause they use.what they like. Your whole argument about purist saying that because you're not using vinyl is killing the culture, You sitting on vdj users cause of whatever the company is saying, you're doing the same thing. Discouraging vdj users and making then feel like they're fake.

    I use timecode and serato.. but i got into it to save wear and tear on my vinyl records... i have been a dj since the 70's... with that being said
    i feel this war on whose a better dj whether its turntables or controllers is bullshit... because i also have cdj's and a controller.. But my favorite setup and overall look to this day is two turntables and a mixer to me its sexy as hell....But thats just my personal Preference.. Now i hear all these djs talkin about who's real and who's fake.. let me tell you something, A Real Real Real Dj, is a dj who can play on anything period...And i mean Anything... OK?
    There was a time when i Dj'd with two single cassette decks with pitch controls back in the day... Also one this i figured out a long time ago is this... It doesn't matter if you have a 1000 dollar system or a 500 thousand dollar system.. Its not the equipment that makes you sound good (Thats a fuckin myth) It's the Talent behind the Equipment Period... Whether its on turntables ,cdj's ,or a controller, if you really got skills believe me its gonna show Nuff Said.......
