  • The more you play Catan, the more you find there are very definite styles of play or Archetypes that players assume. So which of these types are you, and which one has the highest chances of success? We’re going to break this down into two groups. The first set of Archetypes illustrate how newer players tend to think and execute. The second group of Archetypes are the battle seasoned veterans who have definitive strategies in mind.

    In CATAN (formerly The Settlers of Catan), players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players build by spending resources (sheep, wheat, wood, brick and ore) that are depicted by these resource cards; each land type, with the exception of the unproductive desert, produces a specific resource: hills produce brick, forests produce wood, mountains produce ore, fields produce wheat, and pastures produce sheep.
    Setup includes randomly placing large hexagonal tiles (each showing a resource or the desert) in a honeycomb shape and surrounding them with water tiles, some of which contain ports of exchange. Number disks, which will correspond to die rolls (two 6-sided dice are used), are placed on each resource tile. Each player is given two settlements (think: houses) and roads (sticks) which are, in turn, placed on intersections and borders of the resource tiles. Players collect a hand of resource cards based on which hex tiles their last-placed house is adjacent to. A robber pawn is placed on the desert tile.
    A turn consists of possibly playing a development card, rolling the dice, everyone (perhaps) collecting resource cards based on the roll and position of houses (or upgraded cities-think: hotels) unless a 7 is rolled, turning in resource cards (if possible and desired) for improvements, trading cards at a port, and trading resource cards with other players. If a 7 is rolled, the active player moves the robber to a new hex tile and steals resource cards from other players who have built structures adjacent to that tile.
    Points are accumulated by building settlements and cities, having the longest road and the largest army (from some of the development cards), and gathering certain development cards that simply award victory points. When a player has gathered 10 points (some of which may be held in secret), he announces his total and claims the win.
    CATAN has won multiple awards and is one of the most popular games in recent history due to its amazing ability to appeal to experienced gamers as well as those new to the hobby.
    Die Siedler von Catan was originally published by KOSMOS and has gone through multiple editions. It was licensed by Mayfair and has undergone four editions as The Settlers of Catan. In 2015, it was formally renamed CATAN to better represent itself as the core and base game of the CATAN series. It has been re-published in two travel editions, portable edition and compact edition, as a special gallery edition (replaced in 2009 with a family edition), as an anniversary wooden edition, as a deluxe 3D collector's edition, in the basic Simply Catan, as a beginner version, and with an entirely new theme in Japan and Asia as Settlers of Catan: Rockman Edition. Numerous spin-offs and expansions have also been made for the game.

    Video and sound quality is really good! The type of players are funny but don't really make sense. I feel that the differences between 'The Shepperd' and 'Naval Officer' and between 'The Developer' and 'The Mayor' are not significant. Those are Harbormaster players and Tall or O/W/S players.
    'The Saboteur' definitely is a thing but don't deserve the label 'veteran' haha, if you are still holding grudges and are basically just trolling you don't belong with the veterans. Sure you block the strongest player sometimes, or you do a bad trade to help another player so the leader doesn't win the game. But all those thing you do because you still want to win yourself. Just playing to make other players life misserable isn't really a thing among the veterans. Sabotage isn't the goal, winning is.
    Overall a cool video though and hope you will do some more on Catan! Sorry for my comments but that were just some things I had to vent after seeing the video haha

    I just learned this game about two months ago for the first time and I'm completely hooked now.
    I did have the misfortune of playing once against "the analyst" who also revealed himself to be a communist during the course of gameplay..
    He didn't have any resources any one wanted, so instead of moving on to the next person's turn, he kept begging for wheat "because you guys have so many," and was wanting to trade one of his unneeded resources for two wheat cards.
    If no one accepted his lopsided trade offers he would stare at the board like he was trying to figure out some kind of complicated math equation.

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  3 года назад +2

      It's important to us to represent a diverse range of players so it's not simply a homogenous group. It's certainly problematic if people are always characterized the same way or if some groups are excluded or systematically selected against. However, we believe it's fair to show that players can occupy both advanced and beginner roles regardless of their skin colour. In this video for instance, we actually have more white players representing new players than we do players of colour. I'm glad you mention it though, because it's something important to think about. The final shot of the Imperialist for instance, wasn't chosen based on skin colour, but rather, it was the shot in the stock footage that had a person spreading their arms to a valley, which was the look we wanted for that last role.

      In your efforts to erase race from people's perspective, you draw more attention to it. I didn't notice the skin color differences, and it's ridiculous to believe that the creators did this to spite black people. Your obsession with race sees issues where there are none, like seeing faces in campfire smoke and bickering that the guy who started the fire is conjuring ghosts.
