Another perhaps more advanced/meta defensive placement is placing in such a way that you make it more likely that your opponent will place somewhere to enter in a road race against another opponent, or to block a second opponent directly with their next placement. They will give highly advantageous trades for "that missing brick" and if you're lucky they will go all emotional on each other.
on the first "quiz" I picked that spot too. But my reasoning was that as 1st, either you take that, or you're going to play wheatless because on a low wheat board like that it's certainly not going to come back for the 8th pick. I disagree with the concept of edges of the board that are not likely to get blocked. This is only true at the very beginning of the game... as soon as someone gets the lead, they're going to be solo blocked like any other square. On the contrary, central squares that have 3 settlements from 3 different people aren't likely to get blocked simply because any of them rolling a 7 will move the robber away from there. in the last game that you showed, imo black made a mistake: he should have taken 3-11-10, simply because he can't leave you the chance to expand there, considering you already have an absolutely monster setup with all resources and 23 peeps of production.
For the last position: this was a close and competitive game as it was. Instead, if black goes on the 3 11 10, then it sabotages themselves for the sake of sabotaging white, which means that green or red wins almost every time. Honestly though, if I was white I would only place that road towards the centre against good opposition - because casual players absolutely love to do strange misplays just to take you down with them.
the new editing is a bit over the top to me, personally i don't need this much jumping graphics and soundbites. But the colors and fonts and texts are good
Honestly, I think it's just the mixing. The sound effects are so much louder than Dy's voice. If they were more in the background I think it'd be fine.
Feels like a more extrem version of the analysis videos that were more common before road to rank 1, because back then were the same visual and sound effects, the difference is how compact it is in this video. So yeah, maybe a bit much compared to the other content
You say that these first picks "match very well" with the other spots, but why? Why did Bo not take the 8-3 spot to secure wood? Doesn't he need wood to expand?
On that first quiz I took the 6-5-10 wood-ore-sheep triangle, it's the same amount of pips, a good spread of resources, although ore not great for early game, and an access to a 3:1 port, then I realized an opponent could just steal that port and be in a great position while I would be too far from everything good
Hmmm, I would not have picked some of those spots. If you have high brick with your first settlement, but you second spot has no wood? Too subtle for me.
Good job on this video, I think this style of videos will lead you to gain a wider viewership. Its short, educational, and cathy to look at from the start... But maybe a little too flashy, but just a tiiiny bit... But in any case, great job, I hope your videos reach your desired viewership group soon!
I think the placement on 4:30 is just a clear orange mistake, because he could easily have taken the 6 3 11 as his second placement and secure the road, but he greeded to the 11 10 9 because it had more sheep and tought he woudl get the sheep port
Issue with your final example: when black sees you take the 8-4-3 and point your road up to the 10-3-1, if I'm black I'm 100% taking the 10-3-11 or the 9-10-11 to punish you and the road upward to even rush to the 4-5-11 to secure the middle of the board and block your expansions there. I think this was more a misplay by black
Honestly that's the difference between high level and low level gameplay. If I'm playing against low level players then I definitely point that road down to not get blocked, because lower ranked players absolutely love to sabotage themselves and take you down with them. Against high opposition you just don't need to worry about that. The decision to place the road towards the centre or down instead very much depends on who you're playing against. If black goes on the 10-3-11, red or green wins almost all the time.
I mean I personally would go right next door to the 6/5/10 and face road to the right, since it shuts down the 6/9/10 AND the 5/8/10, granting you decent ore production while simultaneously raising the overall value of ore in p2p trades. Second settle I take the 4/11 brick port or the 3/9/11 for first turn road and wheat for first settle at 6/9/12. Admittedly this probably shuts me out of getting a 3:1 port but I like it better than having to trade for all my ore while playing an OWS game.
Idk what’s up with the skeptics for the new editing, I think it’s good! The more formal presentation, music, etc will potentially draw in new people. That’s just my opinion though.
Under each number there are some dots. Those are called pips. They represent the probability of that number being rolled, i.e., 6 and 8 (5 pips) are far more likely to be rolled than 2 or 12 (1pip). When placing the settlement, add the pips from each of the 3 hexes to come up with the total pips for that location. In the first example, note that he said the 6/9/10 was 13 pips . . . but it is not. It's only 12. The highest combination possible is 6/5/9, or 13 pips.
I thought in the first board to go at the 6, 9, 10 with the road to the left and for the second placement at the 4, 11, brick port wanting to expand to the 5, 6, 11 and maybe the 5, 8, 10.
Great video, I recently watched your video picking 3rd position a few days ago. A bigger question is what do you do in 4th position. Picking based on most production seems to the consensus but what if the most production is an awkward resource pairing?
7:44 *can somebody explain me why he drops the settlement on the edge and not in the middle of 3 tiles to also grab wood?* it seems like that is superior in every way
Amazing video! It will be incredible if you could translate your videos to other languages. I mostly speak spanish and im not so familiar with english, so its harder for me and for a lot of people to understand some concepts. :D
@2:45 you say "this is the best spot that compliments his first pick"... how? He doesn't have any wood or sheep making it very hard to place roads and settlements. Please explain why this is good?
Bc when a 6 is rolled he gets wheat and ore which are always used together (dev cards and cities) plus the 3 is an extra wheat for his already high producing ore on 6
At 8:40 there is no way trade will work out long term here. As we see red got enough wood to get the the brick port and he will never trade with you again(he also has the same poor wood as black). As for black they had a(not great) wood tile, they may also decide to just wait and hope for the best working their way to the 6 wood spot given the way everyone's roads are going. I would not make that trade with blue. Even orange could get going better if they get the sheep port.
For the last example, 9/10/11 would also work as a second settlement, you’ll then get both ore and wheat resource on every 9th role like the previous strategy in the video. Let me know if you guys also think the same!
for the last tip, I mean, why should you even consider black's position about the 843? It gives you all 5 resources with different numbers and a 3:1 port It's just an obvious pick
If your talking about where black should go, honestly I would have taken the ore port and doubled down on the 2-1 trade + some sheep. As for his own pick ya just one spot down would block black and given him a port and the two other resources he needs. Edit: finished watching. Black is an idiot, he gets a 3:1 port then goes south to another 3:1 port with NOTHING ELSE. I guess he was too slow and red took what he wanted, but tit's still his fault for a bad starting pick. Red also dumb, why would he take the 3:1 port with the worst sheep tile when he could have gotten double clay and the clay port. He also had a chance to cut off whites longest road. If i'm reading it right 10 points was needed to win both black and green were very close to winning too.
Bro i just tried the future trade concept and got robbed the whole game. I stole a port from one person by future trading and that player and another just kept robbing from me. At the end the 4. player who played like a normal person won but man does it feel bad to get targeted just because u tried a new concept
maybe i'm too much of a noob, but often times you say stuff complements each other without actually naming the reason. just not very clear for a video that i reckon might be watched by a lot of beginners
I found this channel when it first started out and marveled at how much strategy there could be to Catan. But I really think it's being stretched too far. There is no objective "best pick". Leading in a free-for-all game gets you nothing. I'd argue that picking a 8/6/8 gold spot is a bad decision because it means you'll get robbed all game. Furthermore, since collusion is perfectly legal, there's no such thing as "optimal play". If all of Bo's opponents agreed at the game start that they would all mutually benefit by nonstop solo-blocking Bo all game, his magic status as a good player suddenly disappears. And there's no rules against it because it is in all the player's interests of that agreement to participate in that agreement.

You mostly want to do that on inner ring desert boards.

The production value of these videos is insane, great job man keep it up
1:16 *12 pips
Last placement, the 8 4 3 isn't a defensive placement as it's the perfect spot for you regardless of what you're blocking for others
The road network, and ability to get a 2nd 3 hex spot for an inland spot is def worth to consider

In the begging, I answered 5-6-11, thinking of the brick as a scarce resource in this configuration where the other two are far apart.

Thanks for zooming in. Helps a lot with on mobile.
Something you didn't mention is variety of numbers. I always try to get a 6, 8, 5 and 9, that way you get resources on almost every round.

Whats wrong with going for the 6510 on the first board and pointing to the 9 weed to get 910 or 6912?
I actually did pick the correct one. But I dont think i would normally play that way as I like to play for cities early
I thought in the first board to go at the 6, 9, 10 with the road to the left and for the second placement at the 4, 11, brick port wanting to expand to the 5, 6, 11 and maybe the 5, 8, 10.

True, I don't understand it either.
Not sure what you mean but if you're talking about the 3 6 4 then there's already a white settlement there.
Why not 6-5-10 and then point right, then you'll likely get the wheat later?
There’s a chance someone could go 5/8/10 or 3/5/8 with the 9/10, not likely but problematic if it happens
I'm getting a little scared. Few more tips like that and suddenly every opponent will become strong on colonist. How should we climb like that? :')
