    Interactive quiz!
    1) 2:20 - Where would you place your 2 settlements?
    2) 13:34 - 10 Card Hand - What’s the play? Specify what you are using for the port!
    3) 17:00 - 13 Card Hand - What’s the play?
    4) 19:57 - 16 Card Hand - What’s the play?
    5) 22:04 - 13 Card Hand + 2 Dev cards - What’s the play?
    Feel free to answer them individually or make a big comment!

      2:20 I would personally take the 4/8/10 and the 6/2.
      Port strategy could be effective here due to the low ore, so you don’t have to do a ton of trades with brown. Point the 4/8/10 road right, so you can potentially get the 9 wood (pointing it down could also be an option here).
      The 6/2 would be effective as it gets you both wheat, ore, a wood port which would be useful as you do have the 8 wood.
      Edit: ok I’m dumb yea your setup is much better here since you can expand to the 12 anyway.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 года назад +7

      You were on the right track! It’s hard to get good resource diversity here so a port strategy is great!

    • @iconx4167
      @iconx4167 4 года назад +1

      13:34 I would port 3 woods for a city on the 5/10/9. You don’t have to worry about being blocked, since the 8 wood and the 6s are much more threatening. Dev cards aren’t worth it here since these ores are rare.
      Edit: I forgot you had the 2:1 sheep port, whoops. Much better option.

    • @iconx4167
      @iconx4167 4 года назад +1

      17:00 I would port 6 wood for 2 ores and buy 2 dev cards. LR and LA are both a bit of a stretch unless you draw 2 knights here, so you’re searching for victory points and monos.
      Getting a city on the 4/8/10 would make you look very threatening and would cause your 8 wood to be blocked.

    • @iconx4167
      @iconx4167 4 года назад

      ^you could also get defensive knights.

    i love the way you break down the strategies and explain good and better options. the video is very well structured and felt very accessible even to a noob like me, that never considered advanced strategies before. i will definitly leave a like and subscribe, thank you for making my day by bringing old memories while also stimulating thought and waking interest with the interactive quiz challenges. i really enjoyed this, and i will be back for future videos.

    My 2 placements - 8/4 brick 3:1 port, road pointing SE and 8wood 4/10 sheep pointing south toward the sheep port. Plenty of wheat out there you can trade for a little, and it allows you a good 2:1 with a 3:1 start.

The other players were joking and calling me the sheep herder. I got the sheep port and a 3/1 port and got some good trades since I had almost a complete monopoly on those resources. Very funny game and easy win.

  • @theOmerbuhbut
    @theOmerbuhbut 4 года назад +3

    16:56 i think that going for dev cards is stronger in that case, as that 10 is contantly being blocked, so yes you want to improve your income but dont forget that you loses 4 sheep when that 10 is rolled, That amonth of sheep can help you keep buying more dev cards to ensure that the 10 wont be blocked and going for the largest army ( no one is targetting the largest army at that point so it is easy to take). Building a city at that part of the game increases the 10 production to 5 sheeps, that only targetting it more and it is blocked most of the time. The more wood production is not useful. The only good thing in this move is the city on the 4 sheep.

    2:20 I would place my two settlements at the 8 / 4 brick and the 4 / 8 / 10 sheep, wood, sheep.
    This way I would have brick for trading at the 3:1 port and an easy ability to build roads to expand throughout the sheep tiles to trade at the eventual 2:1 sheep port.

  • @Livinglikeits1984
    @Livinglikeits1984 3 года назад +1

    As last player I'd place my settlement between 8-4 with the 3:1 port and the only option for brick, pointing my road south. I then would place my last settlement on 5-9-10 to get good numbers and most resources and my road would head east to possibly take the 6-wood or double up my 9-wood and go for longest road. I would use trades or my port to create my ore because it has very low probability and isn't worth it.

    I would place 8,4 with road pointing bottom right and 8,4,10 with road pointing down. The strengths of this setup are you have coordinated wood brick on an 8 and instant 3:1 port. you also have a fantastic sheep port once you build on it and mid game you can also build round to the brick port and the 4,11 brick.
    The first weakness is you obviously don't have wheat which is not ideal but there is lots of wheat income so you should be fine to trade for it. The second main weakness is you are very easily blockable on the 8 wood until you can port your sheep.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 года назад +2

      Well said! I decided to not go with this setup as for the weaknesses you already highlighted! I typically don’t like going wheatless but you’re right - I think you could get a lot of wheat trades. Thanks for commenting!

    • @1sttperson
      @1sttperson 4 года назад

      @Zoe Lang that's actually the last thing I look at. It's true it would be feast and famine however much more important things to think about when placing (in order of importance) are: what are the rare resources on the board, what outs do you have when placing to get diverse income, are there any good ports you can secure, overall what is your expansion strategy to win (do your expansion spots actually help your setup). Feast and famine numbers are very low priority, it's just as likely that the number on your wheat or ore doesn't roll much which can screw your game just as well as non diverse numbers.

    • @theOmerbuhbut
      @theOmerbuhbut 4 года назад

      Not only that the wheet is super strong, it also that without so much ore in a game like this the wheet looses his value. I probably would have gone with the same choices as you ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯

    I would go on the 5 9 10 for good wheat and a close 3:1 port. Then, I would take the 6 11 12. It's not great brick to pair with the wood but I get some ore with it and a free road to push me towards that 3:1.

  • @zachmorgan7645
    @zachmorgan7645 4 года назад +2

    Okay, I'm paused. I'd place on the 8-4-10 first and point my road downwards to the sheep port. Then the 5-9-10 and point the road downwards as well. This sets you up nicely for longest road. I could see the argument to place the second road facing to the right towards the ore. But the first settlement priority will be the sheep port, so by the time you build that, there's a decent chance someone else would be threatening that spot. This positioning gives you a the max resources possible (dice-wise) on the board, which is great once you get both ports you're going for. The hope would be that you're underestimated because of your lack of ore, and ignored (or better, helped) while you get those initial settlements set up.

    I would place mine on the 5 9 10 and 4 8 10because that way you can cover a good range of good numbers a 2:1 sheep port, lots of sheep, a good amount of wood access to wheat and access to a 3:1 port which can be handy.

    I remember once when I was playing with three other people, we had done this on complete accident but three of us had confined one person to a tiny space on a part of the map. We had roads built in such a way that they couldn’t go past or build anymore settlements. They turned them all into cities and didn’t have enough points to win. Their game was pretty much over around 1/3 into the actual game.

    Thanks for these wonderful videos! I have always enjoyed playing catan with my friends but only started playing colonist after watching your video! It makes it much easier and convenient to play catan, not having to coordinate a big gathering each time!
    Your videos are very vaulable as you give reasoning behind why you think it is a good move or not.
    I have recently played some strategy that focuses on port, and like you say, to maximize the gain of this strategy, I prioritised getting city first before developmental cards. But that attracted the robber alot more. I noticed that even though you said to prioritise getting city first for port strategy, you actually didn't go for it immediately, but got settlement on a port first, and waited until your opponents got their cities up (not sure if you waited for it or they just managed to get it before you), but I wanted to ask would you wait for ppl to get cities first to look less scary with your own city, or just stuff it and go for city and risk getting blocked?

    Answering your 2:20 question about 4th player placements. This one was relatively easy for me. So, ORE is irrelevant in the decision making. No point going for 3/11 and having a 2 or a 12 as an ORE source is pretty much pointless. So my play as 4th is to cover the other four resources as good as I can and use a port to get my ore. So my first dwelling goes on the 8/4 BRICK with the 3:1 port. People will be targeting the 8 BRICK but with the 4 BRICK I still have a source, whereas black will not have. My road points to the 4/11 BRICK a spot that I doubt red will take and certainly not the others. My second dwelling goes on the 5/9/10 giving me good resources. Overall I have 4/5/8/9/10 i.e. excellent production for use with my 3:1 port. I point my road for the second dwelling to the right, aiming for the 9/12 Ore port. I'm aiming to get more wood to match my bricks supply and to get the odd random Ore.

    (Prediction before watching the rest of the video): As 4th player, I would take the 6/5/11 and the 8/4/port. Reason: it's good production, you can get ore through the port, but more importantly, for an ore-poor game, you've got a good position to expand, being in the middle of a lot of open space. It's unlikely anyone will take the 6/11/12 or the 5/9/12, because everybody already has wood (though brown will very likely take the 5/9/10). Red might go for 6/11/12, but will more likely take 8/4/10 and take the wood and sheep ports.
    Edit: with a port strategy, I'd choose a city over the two development cards in order to boost production. I'd trade the wood because it's more plentiful and there's not a lot of roads you can still build.
    For the third decision point, I'd get two development cards. Your production is decent, but you get blocked a lot. More development cards will hopefully mean knights and more control over the robber. Also, nobody has a lot of dev cards yet, so you have a good chance of getting the most knights. City is not a bad choice either; more production for your ports. Roads are unimportant; you can only go to the 9, and the longest road will be hard to compete for against black. Let brown do that.
    4th decision: buy 3 development cards. Same reason.
    5th decision: a brick monopoly can get you all the way to the 9/2 point, giving you the longest road with the potential to keep it, and access to new points. Maybe there's something to building more villages after all!
    (I didn't see that you had a victory card in your hand and could already win that way.)

    • @IntoxicatedPig

      DyLighted - Catan I think if you added Lofi study music it could add an atmosphere of relaxation and focus to the video. Its difficult because the video atmosphere you provide is fast paced yet focused on intense strategy, which is generally accompanied with music from say a game like Civ but you don’t want it to be distracting. The lofi could possibly work if the pace of the video is slowed down, but at the same time I know that some people in the comments have enjoyed your content because it covers intense strategy in a short amount of time. I’m curious to see what you do next, and I hope this suggestion helps somehow!

    17:00 is the tough call for me. On one hand you really want to be able to port after 8s and 4s and more production is always great, on the other not sure the game lasts long enough to get largest army unless you start flipping knights ASAP do to black's position and point total plus hopefully a the knights defend your 10 a bit somewhat making up for the lower production.

    I'd go 8-4-10 and 10-5-9. It gets me a lot of sheep and wood, a decent amount of wheat, and a good chance of getting a sheep and 3:1 port. Brown and Red will likely lock Black out of wood and sheep, so I can count on Black as a trading partner for brick, at least early on. I'll focus on building settlements on the coast, dominate the juicy wood hexes, and use ports for ore with my sheep and wood abundance.

    Before seeing the answer: 4-8-10 down, 5-9-10 down. My philosophy is when in doubt go for the high production. The plan is simple: third town make it the sheep port. For the fourth city, try to grab 4-5-11 if it's still available, otherwise the 3-8 or the 3:1 port. Trading sheep for ore, try also to quickly city up the first two towns.
    EDIT: After seeing the response: The reason I chose down is that I care more about the 9 wood spot, than a 9-12 ore port which won't be of much use with almost no ore and for which I'll likely have to race others and be unlikely to win, because my top priority initially will be the sheep port.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 года назад +1

      Well said! I think you’re right on that my road probably should’ve been pointed down, as the 12 ore isn’t statistically likely to go off that much! The race just gets me blocked early!

    • @SerbAtheist
      @SerbAtheist 4 года назад

      Second question: Definitely use two sheep to city up on the 5-9-10. Having double wheat is a huge advantage (as well as double or better yet triple ore) as it drastically reduces the number of turns needed for the next city. The next goal is of course citying up the 4-8-10. (I personally call this the Athenian model, named after the fact that Athens was far larger and more powerful than its port city of Piraeus)
      My reasons for keeping wood are a bit different. I prefer the production strategy over OWS or LR, and in it wood and brick are inherently important as they allow quick expansion to new towns.
      Third question: City on 4-8-10. No question. You have a chance, take it. You can always buy a dev card later to ward off robbers, but in this set up it's difficult to build a city without risking robbery or being 7ed out.
      Fourth question: In general I prefer to go on a dev card rampage when I'm at at least 7 points, preferably 8, though undoubtedly buying dev cards earlier paid off in this case. I don't consider the 2-card a waste, unless I'm producing everything equally, which is definitely not the case here. I'd have built the sheep port city or the 9 forest town here and only then bought dev cards.
      Final question: obviously, brick monopoly.

    Great video as always! Definitely lots of intersting decisions and tips. Only thing that stuck out to me was that it sounds like every line is being emphasized too much. I understand wanting to have a more proffessional speech pattern, but I think you've maybe taken it one step too far. For videos of this length it can be challenging to stay engaged when every line has the "breaking news stay engaged" tone of voice. I think taking a step back to your more casual tones from earlier videos for the "play-by-play" portions of the script, and turn on the the emphasis for the big moments, and important points might be a go0d middle ground.
    That's just my 2 cents though, and I'm a nobody on the internet. Regardless I'll keep enjoying your entertaining and informative videos!

    I think this is a very common thinking, but I would place my settlements on the 5-9-10 and the 8-4 (with the port), then would try to progress with the 5-9-10 village to get another port (ideally the sheep one)

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 года назад

      I agree! This is what a lot of people choose since it’s gets you pretty strong resource diversity and gets you the rare brick! I’m aways slightly cautious of placing on the coast as 4th position because it leaves open a lot of space for my opponents. The port strategy was surprising a strong defensive play making other people have worse setups like red and black. I definitely did think about the 8-4 though!
