Love this - great video! I hadn't realised how common those little melodies were in so many snthwave tracks. I was listening to a Pylot album (Shadowtask) and both the Synthwave Lick and Outrun Rise feature in it. Once you start noticing them, they appear very frequently! Those particular notes do sound very 80s.
Man, this brilliant! Very well made and explained! I'm sure I'll come back to this video and rewatch it, because it was such a pleasant watch. I totally adore synthwave and love making it myself. I'm a very nostalgic person by nature, so this, although I'm from '78, is like a safe haven to me! Thanks! ps I'm gonna send this link to Timecop 1983 and Nina. ☺
Thank you so much; glad you enjoyed the vid. Nina's Beyond Memory & Timecop1983's One Night are two of my favourite synthwave tracks, mainly due to the harmonies.
I was born in the 70s, therefore, this is still synthpop to me. Nevertheless, such a great video! Very well made! May I hit the “like” button more than once?
Great vid mate - I was a teen all through the 80's and though i didnt drive a Lambo, it was mega! Great music - new styles of music coming from every direction, games consoles, home computers were just becoming a reality. renting out those John Hughes, and breakdancing films from a video shop and also taking a chance on some low budget sci fi film because you really liked the box art! , BMX'S, so many briiliant t.v shows from America we all watched. All those films we saw at the cinema- Cinema going wasnt as dire as it was in the 70's, so by the time the early 80's rolled around they had started to improve them, so watching Star Wars films, Star Trek 2, Cannonball Run, E T, Rocky 3, Lethal Weapon etc with my buddies was truly special! I lived 10 mins walk from a cinema, so we went a lot! 😎 Great memories! Synthwave is like distilled 80's nostalgia and i love it! ❤
Couldn't get very far into that video without reference to Carpenter. I really enjoyed that extended one of The Thing you did, I'd like to see more along those lines... the scoring of Terminator, Alien and films like that - from your perspective obviously. Ever get into GGFH, Acid Bath, Suicide Commando and etc?
but I couldn't agree on "the lick", phrasings are so different than the og lick I wouldn't qualify it as the lick of synthwave. the thing with the og lick is the phrasing and function are similar almost everywhere it's been used. however, for the very same reason I found the outrun rise analysis fascinating.
As regards further listening, if you choose to accept, I'd recommend the playlist titled "1 Hour of Melancholic Sovietwave 2nd Mix" on Truckfighter's channel.
It's surprising how many people think this is how the 80's really looked. In reality, the typical 80's home looked much as it did in the 70's (unless you had money and could afford the hideous, floral, Laura Ashley style that came into vogue).
@@LindaBinjuice except a big part of the video pertained to influences in the genre, which makes it very relevant. Just make a mention and give a nod then I'm okay with it is all I'm saying.
@@jgpick63 would be a considerably longer vid then if every single potential influence of every single song was discussed! Doesn't affect the pace or message of the video that Boys of Summer wasn't mentioned.

I love how many real examples of the synthwave lick and outrun rise you added.

Amazingly well done documentary. Congrats!
I can't believe this only got 500 views! I added it to my What is Synthwave playlist and really appreciate the hard work you've put into this. 🌴
Thanks so much! It took a while to get all the musical examples organised but definitely worth it!
Very inspiring and informative documentary. Synthwave is the best corner of internet. Love it!
🌆😇
This is such a good video, man!
Thanks - very pleased with how it turned out.

Distilled nostalgia is a great way of describing the genre.
I had a Countach poster on my wall as a kid which was as close as I got to driving one!
Amazing video!!
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it.

Obsessed with all these artists and so hyped they’re in this plus ones I’m new to and I’m adding them now

Yep. The look of E.T. was what the 80s looked like for most people. Just regular homes with lots of brown wood paneling.
Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be
There was no mention of the direct rip-off of Henley's Boys of Summer at 15:25
Possibly because that's not relevant to the discussion?
