I love how many real examples of the synthwave lick and outrun rise you added.
14:46 IS THAT THE LICK??
Amazingly well done documentary. Congrats!
John Williams used the last Jedi score alto sax and 2 bass saxes
I suggested an alto clarinet for my high school band and everyone pointed and laughed because nobody thought it was an actual instrument until at our marching band championship a school marched bass and alto clarinet together on the field unironically enough they got first we got third
I was born in the 70s, therefore, this is still synthpop to me. Nevertheless, such a great video! Very well made! May I hit the “like” button more than once?
"Ancora piu 80s". Brilliant!
As a musician and avid transformer fan and collector this gives me the happies 🌝
Score analysis of the 86 film in progress!
This orchestration is crazy
Hecklephone goes hard
Arcana also has a great Heckelphone part.
This is such a good video, man!
Thanks - very pleased with how it turned out.
Dan, I'm a music professor, and I would love to get a copy of your analysis for my film scoring class. Is that a possibility?
There isn't any paperwork available, but feel free to play the vid in class by all means!
Very inspiring and informative documentary. Synthwave is the best corner of internet. Love it! 🌆😇
Wow...
Great Vid.
7:22 that is the game of thrones theme
That clip is marked 2009. Game of Thrones first aired in 2011. So he wrote the piece before GOT existed...
Obsessed with all these artists and so hyped they’re in this plus ones I’m new to and I’m adding them now Thank you!
New sub !!
Man, this brilliant! Very well made and explained! I'm sure I'll come back to this video and rewatch it, because it was such a pleasant watch. I totally adore synthwave and love making it myself. I'm a very nostalgic person by nature, so this, although I'm from '78, is like a safe haven to me! Thanks! ps I'm gonna send this link to Timecop 1983 and Nina. ☺
Thank you so much; glad you enjoyed the vid. Nina's Beyond Memory & Timecop1983's One Night are two of my favourite synthwave tracks, mainly due to the harmonies.
It's surprising how many people think this is how the 80's really looked. In reality, the typical 80's home looked much as it did in the 70's (unless you had money and could afford the hideous, floral, Laura Ashley style that came into vogue).
Yep. The look of E.T. was what the 80s looked like for most people. Just regular homes with lots of brown wood paneling.
There was no mention of the direct rip-off of Henley's Boys of Summer at 15:25
Possibly because that's not relevant to the discussion?
@@LindaBinjuice except a big part of the video pertained to influences in the genre, which makes it very relevant. Just make a mention and give a nod then I'm okay with it is all I'm saying.
@@jgpick63 would be a considerably longer vid then if every single potential influence of every single song was discussed! Doesn't affect the pace or message of the video that Boys of Summer wasn't mentioned.
Amazing video!!
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it.
Hey Dan, just wondering, what mouthpiece did the bass sax player in your 1st Symphony Movement 1 use for that solo? I’m looking at getting a bass sax and I loved that tone in the soli so if possible can you give me the name of that mouthpiece please?
I honestly have no idea sadly. I'm not a sax player, so wouldn't know how to tell!
This video should have 6 digit views. Liked and subbed 👍
Thanks - appreciate the sub!
Fantastic video Dan ❤️ your analysis added even more enjoyment to a score I've loved since I can remember. I play violin in an amateur orchestra and my buddy sent me this - we said how your analysis is way more fun than our theory classes 😂 The Thing is on Film4 tonight!! I love the dissonance on the canon. Excellent work on an absolute classic, thank you!!
I'm watching it as I type! Check out my series The Thing Meets Bach. I've composed a few canons there based on dialogue from the film.
@@danthefugueguy the Thing Meets Bach?! Ohhh ❤️ mashup of my dreams! Can't wait to check it, thanks!
dont get it?
There's nothing to 'get'. It's just a great clip from a great piece of music.
Awesome video!. As a student of the late great Joseph Viola co-founder of Berklee College I can really appreciate the thought & sensitivity that went into this presentation. The whole time I was at Berklee I never saw a bass sax. The only one I ever saw was on an exchange concert in high school, unfortunately when I was there the instrument was in disrepair and I couldn't try it out!. Yes more low saxes. I have a slightly off topic inquiry. I have seen several RUclips videos with what they're calling a contrabass sax, some really are saxes but others are not. The bore does not taper out enough to call it a saxophone. Being a full octave below the baritone the bell should be twice the diameter of a baritone bell. These rogue instruments are not saxophones so what are they? They seem more practical being smaller and easier to transport and they appear to blend well with saxophones. If anyone knows what those instruments are called please let me know. Thanx...
Nice! I made a probably too literal transcription of this a few years ago (crazy time signatures rather that saying slightly out of time)
Yes at that bit in the horn part I initially thought it started before the second beat, but couldn't tell for sure since there is quite a lot of SFX going on at that point. Was easier to presume it started in the second beat and was not strictly in time for whatever reason!
Something other's have also talked about is treating timpani as a whole separate entity from percussion. We may be able to do some things, but this asks for enough rests for us to - put our sticks away, - move over to the other instrument from behind the timpani (which may take upwards of 10 seconds), - pick up the instrument or its mallets, - make sure it's comfortable, - and then play. It it also important to know that timpani mallets can be damaged when used on other instruments (e.g. suspended cymbal. The cymbal isn't smoothed down and will start pulling the mallet head apart). Thus don't write anything encouraging it
subscribed without looking at other videos because this video deserves more views
but I couldn't agree on "the lick", phrasings are so different than the og lick I wouldn't qualify it as the lick of synthwave. the thing with the og lick is the phrasing and function are similar almost everywhere it's been used. however, for the very same reason I found the outrun rise analysis fascinating.
I can't believe this only got 500 views! I added it to my What is Synthwave playlist and really appreciate the hard work you've put into this. 🌴
Thanks so much! It took a while to get all the musical examples organised but definitely worth it!

No. MORE SOPRANINO SAX
Great vid mate - I was a teen all through the 80's and though i didnt drive a Lambo, it was mega! Great music - new styles of music coming from every direction, games consoles, home computers were just becoming a reality. renting out those John Hughes, and breakdancing films from a video shop and also taking a chance on some low budget sci fi film because you really liked the box art! , BMX'S, so many briiliant t.v shows from America we all watched. All those films we saw at the cinema- Cinema going wasnt as dire as it was in the 70's, so by the time the early 80's rolled around they had started to improve them, so watching Star Wars films, Star Trek 2, Cannonball Run, E T, Rocky 3, Lethal Weapon etc with my buddies was truly special! I lived 10 mins walk from a cinema, so we went a lot! 😎 Great memories! Synthwave is like distilled 80's nostalgia and i love it! ❤
Distilled nostalgia is a great way of describing the genre. I had a Countach poster on my wall as a kid which was as close as I got to driving one!
Another thing, have you heard of the Glissotar? Fascinating new instrument with microtonal capabilities!
I have not - but will definitely check it out. Thanks!
In the CD version the Humanity Pt. 2 score is longer and more dramatic
Yes there are a few differences compared to the version heard in the film.
Can you do more of these "How to write for blahblahblah instrument" they really help with composing!!
I love you alto clarinet! In fact I'd buy one right now if I could afford it. Not only does it have beautiful depth but it's elegant styling is like a summer wind!
I was NOT expecting Subaru of hololive dancing on 2:46 in this video.
This slaps. "Molto infuriatoso"
warning: unsolicited feedback below fine, but for such a subject with quite a funky feel (syncopation, chromatic motif) the rest of the fugue is so counter to this. harmonically it just stays relatively safe (baroque, 18-19th century ish). rhythmically there's no reuse of the 16-note syncopated motif to develop. see ruclips.net/video/ojZ0U4QZ9gI/видео.html for a fugue that uses modern subject material
The use of the "safe" stuff was fully intentional. It was also a deliberate choice to not make the one bar syncopation which occurs at the end of the example version at the start part of the subject or development, and instead reserve it for just one appearance.
Nice, ha
Are you trying to tempt me into getting myself a bass saxophone? Cuz its working.
As a saxophonist, this was great. I would have liked to hear more of the examples to illustrate what you said about them. Even a 5-second clip of each of the scores you included in the video would have been really helpful.
Thanks, glad it was useful. Unfortunately I couldn't find any recordings of the Holbrooke works where it's confirmed that the full compliment of saxes were used. Holbrooke is a greatly underrated composer in general sadly.
What about contra alto
That's on the to do list! Very underrated instrument.
Claude T Smith
Rahsaan needed that! 😂
I just found this channel, and I have never before found a man whose opinions I agree with more.
The G clarinet is the true Alto clarinet. The current Alto is actually a Tenor.
Perfectly valid point to make. This is why the clarinet nomenclature is so confusing!
I truly do wish bass saxes (and other bass/contrabass woodwinds) can show up more in orchestral and band works. I understand these instruments are not very common and ridiculously expensive, but they still exist and many ensembles have them, waiting to be used. Bring them back, that way us tubas can have more bass to team up with!
