note: The blurred text at 14:19 should say BARBERBEATS. By mistake I used the term CHILLWAVE there, which itself is a broader genre much closer to SYNTHWAVE and the terms appear to often be used interchangeably on the internet (though both predate Vaporwave).
note 2: I apologize for the clickbait title, I am by no means an authority on Vaporwave subgenres. However, these 20 are close to being a full set of the categories commonly referenced in online discussion.
note 3: You might be surprised at the huge amount of Vaporwave albums available on *Spotify* (the genre itself has an official playlist). You can try searching for a specific subgenre from the video too!
note how the hell did I get this wrong???: "Late Night Delight" was released in 2013. I think I got some re-release date?
Some of the names and descriptions are helpful to figure out the feeling. Cool vid. :)
Bro, do not excuse yourself in any way, you are doing gods work by keeping this (personally life changing) genre alive with all this documentation. Keep up the good work !
Just rename them "Nearly All Vaporwaves subgenres..."
Dont worry, still is helpful bro, good video
you can always train youtube,. by finding an artist you like
playing al their albums at the same time
next day just have faith in your recomended
I think we're at the point where we can stop calling vapourwave a microgenre just cause some prissy wikipedia editor says so. It's a genre with it's own distinct subgenres and related genres.
we should change it
Almost every "vaporwave" song is just slow down jazz/funk/pop songs. I don't know if these people can even call themselves producers, they just steal songs and put their name on them.
I feel like “microgenre umbrella” could be more suitable.
To call it just a distinct music genre isnt doing it any right either. Someone called it the first example of post-music and i feel that describes it better.
no lol, you don't know what you're talking about
Vaporwave, Synthwave, Future Funk and Chillwave represent the peak of my college years.
Fun times.
Same here. A rare breed, we are!
They represent my high school years and present lol. I'm so glad I got into this genre : )
All of those are my favorites too 👍🏾
For me it's middle school haha
Same
Once you felt the taste of Vaporwave, you never forget it. It's a pure endless pleasure that not many are able to understand.
Vaporwave is a lifestyle
I still feel like a beginner to vaporwave, even though I've known about it from 2016 (Macintosh Plus) and I really got into it in 2021. I really didn't know there was all these sub-genres, so thanks!
Check out vapor memory
@@himalayo Funny enough that's how I got into vaporwave! Luxury Elite's World Class was recommended to me over and over again, and I finally (and thankfully) decided to check it out :)
@@NewWaveEnthusiast World Class is also one of my favorite albums, I used to listen to it before sleep and during more introspective moments. It's amazing
I got into vaporwave from that same album back in 2018 or so. I Love Lux, I’m definitely gonna see her at Electronicon 3 this year
Maybe mid 2019 for me. Found it after listening to Synthwave and wanted something similar. I think 猫 シ Corp was the first artist to hook me. It was either "News at 11" or "Palm Mall" that really got my attention.
This is great and insightful. Been listening to the genre as a whole since 2016 and I still find myself learning new things. Thanks a lot for the vid!
im so sick of music and this is a lifesaver. feeling completely rejuvenated and ready to surf some vaporwaves. this is essential
10:20 Still sounds so good, no matter how much I listen to it or how many other albums I discover. Birth of a new day trully is the pinnacle of the genre
11:40 is also godly
Birth of a new day is amazing, though I highly recommend Rain Temple from 2814 too! It's beyond dreamy.
@@oslamphoenix9871 rain temple is also great
I knew them all as "youtube algorithm recommended music", but having watched this video I feel a little less uncultured. Thank you for making this amazing guide.
I'm actually doing multiple art pieces based on some vaporwave subgenres for my highschool art class, this video is exactly what I need, so thank you
error at 11:00 That album, artist and label classifies itself as "Fish Vapour", a microgenre that passed unnoticed in Vaporwave, but had a very promising essence: sampling Liquid DnB (and the other subgenres of DnB) and others underground electronic genres that sound underwater like Deep House, Dub House, Dub Techno.
That genre laid the foundations for the famous *_Barber Beats_* and *_Sea Punk_* .
Its essence in a few words could be said to be _music that would sound like the soundtrack of the deep sea and reefs_ (because of the "Fish" in the name) and taking the "Aero" aesthetic and fresh sound.
Long live vaporwave! This music got me though countless college assignments. Nothing else could help me focus at times. VHS Pop is one of my favorite subgenres.

I got into vaporwave last year and even though I missed the initial hype of the movement back in 2016, I'm so glad there is still an active community! This video was awesome and I'm really glad it has all the subgenres neatly gathered together for reference. You did a good job providing examples of each subgenre and now I have more artists to look into!
My Vaporwave journey began with Synthwave, Chillwave, and Retrowave. Around the same time I discovered City Pop. Then that lead me to Future Funk. After I discovered Future Funk then I fell into the broader Vaporwave genre. I didn't like it at first but something was super intriguing about it so I kept coming back to it. Now I love Vaporwave and I'm always looking for more to explore within the genre!
" I missed the initial hype of the movement back in 2016"
The initial hype was at 2012, it got pretty huge between those that use internet to search about music back them.
That's the cool thing though, the "hype" doesn't really matter, since Vaporwave is timeless (literally ^^) and the genre has such deep depths to dive into and explore that you'll find yourself discovering interesting things yourself and if YOU are hyped about it and want to bring that hype to your friends as well, you can do so anytime. 😃 Vaporwave lives on.
Vaporwave was my go-to during grad school (2015-2021). Great companion for reading and writing.
In a way, it feels like my version of my father’s love for smooth jazz; keeping it in the family.
Totally relate by seeing my Dad's fondness for smooth jazz in my affinity for vaporwave. I keep thinking I'll stumble across a Paul Hardcastle sample in a vaporwave tune one of these days.
I like this, the way you resume the generes, put examples and the transission you use, makes this video catchy and enternteined, the only bad thing i find about it, it's that doesn't have a outro and just ends.
Also, i would like to see a 2nd part, of course if you can
Well, vaporwave songs tend to end abruptly too, so this video end kinda fits lol
Slushwave is what i've been searching for my entire life, and I'm more than happy to have found this subgenre.
This is glorious. I feel like kinda an old head, I used to listen to OC Remixes on Ormgas back in like 2006, and some of those VG remixes resembled what would become vaporwave. Then life happened and I got away from it all, only coming back in the last couple years. This is a resource I wish I had since it does a great job pointing someone new in the right direction!
feels weird to call it a microgenre when it has been going for ten years with hundreds of releases and has even been an influence on mainstream pop
>> tfw it’s not a micro genre anymore
Yea def not a micro genre no mo ahah as of 2018 it blew up hard its wild seeing it get so popular when it was on the brink of dying
How has it been influenced in mainstream pop ?
I can't even count how many times I've seen that synthwave gif
@@Yanchea the guy who invented vaporwave produced most of the weeknd's latest album
Been listening to vaporwave for nearly 9 years now and there's a lot of stuff on here I've never heard before, thanks for sharing! Good introductory vid.
This is awesome. I listened to a ton of Classic Vapor in the earliest days but didn't really explore most of these subgenres. Thank you for this overview.
Im at least half a decade late when it comes to this genre tbh. If I may ask, how were you able to find those back in your days? Was it forums, soundcloud or bandcamp? I'm kinda new to this whole music finding stuff and want to expand my horizons.
Vaporwave is gonna take over again lol
It's weird to see synthwave in this video as I see it as it's own separate thing entirely. Did not know hard vapor was a thing and now I need more
8:15 that shit is an absolute bop
Very good video for people that are wanting to get into vaporwave thank you!
Damn i remember 2010 when vaporwave was first comming out 2012-2016 best year for vaporwave
Vaporwave motivates me to persue my dream job
I’m a producer in the chillsynth/synthwave scene, love to see the representation 💙💙
優れたビデオ ♥
Vaporwave fit like a glove to my musical taste. it's like iv'e been searching for this kind of music my whole life
Great video. I've been in the seen for about 5 years now, it's nice to see that vaporwave isn't genre-defined anymore and is more of a umbrella term.
Mallsoft is my favorite of all these!, also there is a hidden sub genre/ style called slime punk, it’s like sea punk but focuses more on the old like mlg Mountain Dew dorito culture
I love vaporwave so much, it's become a hard staple on my life and even after finding out about it, I still learn of different new subgenres. Really cool!!!
I still get chills every time I hear Resonance
This is an excellent track, I think this is a classic of the genre that will be listened to even after 100 years.
@@ARCYCRINresonance is one of the worst songa ever is boring repetove and i hate synths
@@floralrollyou hate synths? are you aware that like- all modern music uses synthesizers in some form or another? most music hasn't been truly acoustic since the 60s
Hey, I’m on the video! Thank you, happy to being part of this amazing community.
vaporwave is fascinating because there is SO MUCH diversity in it, yet it is (comparatively) a very young genre. makes me excited for what the future may bring.
Thank you, let’s keep vaporwave alive!
The best way to do that is to say "vaporwave is dead."
I remember in the early 90s waking up before dawn to get the bus to high school and turning on the Weather Channel to hear my favorite tunes during the local forecasts in the dark. (Was also listening to the latest Aphex/Ae that year). So dope people found a way to turn it into a micro genre, some great musicians that probably thought their work would be forgotten but I knew some of it was magic. If only I didn't throw out my own VHS tapes of it.
God damn. In 2017, I randomly downloaded a "Synthwave music mod pack" from Stellaris steam workshop and fell in love with the genre while listening to it in game. From that day I am slowly finding more and more great music from all the surrounding genres as well.
This is amazing!
Aahh Weathervawe of my childhood(early 90s)! I literally remember hyping to the background music of the weather forecast show on the tv.
Thank you for this video
This video is a gem. Thank you for this.
Nice breakdown. Thanks!
My god did I need this, thank you so much
what a genre, a feeling - not felt in any other music ive ever heard.
I love this
I appreciate how thorough this is
I cannot describe how much I love the sound of 17:20, I feel like I'm back in the late 90s listening to the Weather Channel while getting ready for school, between MTV commercials.
Thank you for this! Great video so full of info
Never thought I needed this, arigatou
Thank you, gratefully!
Can't thank you enough for all the bandcamp links! Discovered a few awesome artists!
Great job. Love the TV static between chapters!
Very concise and clear, great job and examples
This video is awesome buddy! Thank you for do this explanation for all new and old vaporwave listeners!
One of the best vaporwave breakdowns I've seen. Thanks for this.
Awesome video, thanks for making this
Bless the algorithm and this video thank you so much
Huge thank you from France - everything looks more clearly
Great video!
This is super cool man
This has been a perfect video for me. Looking forward to listening to new stuff, and re-listening to old favorites
The video that we needed for understand more of this music. Thanks for upload. We appreciate it. 🙌🏼
Thanks fot the knowledge!
Amazing video, really educational approach to the genre. I've been trying to find out more about some of the subgenres and you really made a lot of points pretty clear.
Thanks for uploading this video as it made me understand Vaporwave better.
Amazing video! Great tracks curated here
Vaporwave really is special... but I can't describe it in what way it's special you just gotta feel it yourself to get it don't you think?
really enjoyed that, thank you!
Great video, thanks.
this video deserves wayyy more respect...thank you for this!
great video and really nice examples! It's so interesting to think about all the vaporwave subgenres to come in the future🙏
This video brings a lot of insight on something I've always been curious about, while also sharing amazing vibes!
The example albums you used for this video are superb!
the amoutn of effort you put into this is insane. incredible job, my friend!!!!
It is much clearer to me now ! Thank you for this research and very nice presentation 👌
Thank you for this its a great way to sum up the genre. I have been listening to vaporwave since 2017 and this gives me a better way to continue exploring the different flavors of this genre
Great video. Especially enjoyed the examples and descriptions.
Really great examples of the different kinds of vaporwave that are out there including some albums/artists I haven't heard of until now. Thank you!
thank you for this list! i need to check out more new stuff, i mainly know the older releases. i got into vaporwave in 2014 and i still love it
This was very educational thanks.
oh, and nice playlists on the channel too!
Ah...a nice comprehensive look at my favorite stuff to listen to when I nap! Great work!
Awesome video
Omg this is amazing I wanted to do a presentation on this and I’m looking forward to it. Amazing work!!!
vaporwave has been apart of me for years and will never leave, a great community with great music!
really enjoyed this
I loved this video format, "just let the music speak for itself", thank you
Great collection of examples!
Really great stuff. The past 10 years or so were interesting. Glad these tunes where there through it. Summer nights have a new nostalgia trigger.
Great video my friend! Vaporwave and all of its various subgenres have been massive for me in the past few years and has started to really influence my artistic side, and this was a great condensed look at it! Would love to see more :)
Incredible video!! Tysm
This is an absolutely outstanding video. I love the genre, and I view this as a glowing tribute to it so to speak. The editing and screen-design are great too. Again, fantastic job. I hope the algorithm gods do you a favour and recommend this to everyone.
A great video with good examples. Thanks for this
Spectacular
Would love to see more of these types of videos with different genres!
This is an awesome video! Thank you for so much attention to detail, this is a hard world to navigate and now I feel way cooler. Gonna cook up some barber beats some time soon.
these songs still give me chills all the way from 2016 when I first became obsessed with Vaporwave
Love this video, no talking, just music and text saying what you see when listening to the genres.
Odyssey just hits different.
Good work on this one.
Thanks for making this. I can't believe it's been nearly 10 years since I discovered this music. I'm very bad at finding new stuff, and often just listen to the same stuff in my car over and over, so this is right up my alley, even if the 2013 albums excite me more than the 2022 stuff
