I can't name any others who arent hamstrung by plot driven stupidity or a snarky sidekick who is somehow better than the Protagonist.
@@beardalaxy this is where the exception I made comes into play. in the vast majority of games the sassy side character is stronger than the protagonist or spends the whole game complaining at you.
I think outrun as a genre term came from Kavinsky's song "Outrun" that was featured in Drive. People liked what they heard, but couldn't pick a name. They went with the name of the song, kind of like when Venom fans called their genre Black Metal due to the song of the same name.
Here's a simple version: Outrun: A digital existence within the imagination of the 80's. Radical, fast, a bit of a blend between early 80's and late 70's with neon against dark colors. Usually centered around fast, futuristic cars and bikes. Turbo-Future Police chasing Radical Punks on a laser-built road. Vaporwave: The ghost of the 80's, a piece of software still running, but seldom updated, left behind, forgotten, but still powered on. Euphoric, slow, leans more towards the late 80's with 90's media being a basis as well. Bright colors upon bright, if it don't hurt your eyes, then that shit ain't vaporwave. Usually centered around software, media, advertisements, forgotten pop culture. Grabbing a Pepsi while listening to Japanese Disco.
Now, I’ve noticed something from this video that I would like to contribute to the differences between Vaporwave and Outrun. The two words I would use personally to differentiate between them, are “dusk” and “dawn” Dusk is associated with Outrun and Dawn, associated with Vaporwave. So now for the definitions of these two words and how they both tie in: “Dusk occurs at the darkest stage of twilight, or at the very end of astronomical twilight after sunset and just before night.” Meanwhile: “Dawn, from an Old English verb dagian: "to become day", is the time that marks the beginning of twilight before sunrise.” Outrun’s usage of darker backdrops and much more intense reds, oranges, yellows and even purples, instills a feeling of dusk, the time at the end of twilight, Sunset, if you will. It also uses more of the “warm colours” that we can split the rainbow into. Meanwhile, Vaporwave has a much brighter, more vibrant colour palette consisting of pinks, blues, purples and greens along with lighter backdrops. For whatever reason, I can easily associate it with the time at the beginning of twilight, dawn, perhaps sunrise even. It also, again, uses more of the “cool colours” that we split the rainbow into. So, while they are polar opposites, they are both two sides of the same coin. One is heads, and one is tails, and the coin is the era of the 1980s aesthetic.
As well as the sun sets in the west, reflecting outruns larger focus on 1980s western culture. Whereas the sun rises in the east, reflecting vaporwaves larger focus on 1980-90s eastern culture.
Yeah but vaporwave is ironic, like the other dude here said, it mocks the sistem trying to sell us emotions and divinity itself through products and ads
Here's a better version: Vaporwave makes fun of consumerism and the fake happiness companies always try to shove in our collective faces, slowly peeling away to reveal a dysfunctional hyper-capitalist future that covers it's tracks with a facade. Outrun is similar, except there's no facade. Only despair, nothing else.
Outrun is more of a specific part of the Retrowave/synthwave aesthetic that spefically includes cars driving into the infinite night, based on the outrun game series. the retrowave aesthetic is either a subgenre of or a cousin of vaporwave, which analyses the future through a very specific 80s sci fi aesthetic. Vaporwave as a whole analyses the future through a lens of the past, while justaposing those visions of the future, utopian or dystopian, with the aesthetic of the past from which they are derived. the use of fullwidth text as part of the vaporwave aesthetic is rooted in its inclusion of the 80s, so i wouldnt say vaporwave is just 90s based. anyway, great video on the topic, thanks for covering it
Synthwave is the daddy of Vaporwave and Retrowave, however the line between Synthwave and Retrowave are almost non-existent, so Vaporwave came from Retrowave.

So Synthwave = Outrun? Does Dark Synthwave fall under Outrun too? I always sort of thought that Synthwave was the term for the overarching genre of Outrun and Vaporwave because they both utilize synthesizers.
Yes. Vaporwave often incorporates corporate brands like pepsi or Sony in their aesthetics as well. Vaporwave heavily revolves around the consumerism culture of the 80s.
vaporwave is about representing a time that doesn’t exist, not neccesarily any point in time, the point is we cant tell if it’s the past, present or future. Outrun is a stylized alternate reality inspired by 80s pop culture
Vaporwave: Take a nice sit and have some Arizona green tea. Outrun: OH SHIT WE GOTTA STOP CYBORGCLOPS FROM DESTROYING EVERYTHING WITH HIS LASER NUKE!!!11
Musically, I always saw it this way... Vaporwave often also seems to make heavy use of speed altered (slowed down) pre-recorded music, or put through a softening effect of some sort to simulate old VHS Audio in the mastering. The vibe is like a dead mall or urbex video where the site has minor decay....or like an old, yellowed, 486 DX2 PC from 1992 running Windows 95. Outrun is glossy and like if ABC, The Cars, A Flock of Seagulls, Berlin, or early P-Model released an album today using their eighties era gear or simulations thereof. "I am dog, if you word, can cheese be fact?" Of course this qoute is absolutely exquisite in it's complexion but many simple minded people can't fathom to possibly understand it's deep entrenched meaning. As a once intelligent person once qouted " to be or not to be" this goes with our first question "I am dog" this sentence delves into the very animalistic behavior of human tendencies which leads to human speach yet I digress for the next stanza qoutes "if you word" this qoute would mean nothing more than "talk" with goes amazing with the next sentence "can cheese be fact" what this means all put together is "if humans let thier animalistic instinctual behaviour then to speak thier cheese will be fact" thus meaning that our human nature is to be one with the cheese itself and cheese being truth. Truth is a deep understanding that can be hard to grasp. . . And yet this qoute never ceases to amaze me. I am dog, if you word, can cheese be fact?
I swear if anybody sends me an aesthetic photo of a roman statue and it they say that it's OUTRUN,I am going to lose all faith I had in them before that moment.
Thank you for reafirming everything i already knew. i got into it in tik tok cause this girl said an outrun post was vaporwave and i said it wasnt clearly pointing out the difference and since she was kind of cute all the simps started attacking me, now i am just posting the link to your video and claiming checkmate.
Tl;dr: Outrun draws inspiration from the "cool" stuff of the 80s and early 90s. Vaporwave takes inspiration from the "nerdy" stuff of the 80s and early 90s. EDIT: Oh, shit, looks like video made a different tl;dr. Oh well, I think mine vaguely fits as well.
Outrun: The Spice must flow. Vaporwave: May the Force be with you. Darksynth: From the Eye of Terror, we come to kill. Outrun-Darksynth (I forgot the name of this genre): One vision, one purpose.
It’s been a wonder finding your video making its way through RUclips’s algorithm! I actually happen to follow you on Instagram, and it pleasantly surprised me to see a recommendation for this video (and later finding that it was by you), seeing as I don’t view anything vaporwave or outrun related on here. I actually follow both, but I lean more towards outrun, retrowave, synthwave, and that end of the spectrum. But hey, at least I know you’ve got a channel now! :) (P.S.: love your work, man.)
Dude I was so hyped by this video. Never heard of the term "outrun" before since I'm interested in vaporwave. Aesthetic means so much too me and the fact that some people are wondering what's the actual differences and nuances is insane
To be honest I like both of these equally, I've been calling everything mentioned in this video vaporwave lol. I'ma just say I'm a fan of both ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I honestly wish more people would see this video, it needs to be pinned literally in all big vaporwave and outrun communities like a PSA. I honestly hate gatekeeping and also didn't really mind when just a few people got them mixed up, but it has been so much more exhausting in the past few years to search for either genre without them bleeding into each other, because people making playlists, art and music don't seem to properly distinguish them. There's nothing wrong with blending them together, but it's a little sad that Vaporwave has lost so much of its individuality. To be completely honest, I don't even think outrun and vaporwave are that similar other than sampling old music and like... palm trees? lmao. In my eyes, Vaporwave has WAYYY more in common with Seapunk than it ever did with Outrun or Synthwave. It just makes it sooo hard to see Vaporwave for what it is, especially for newcomers nowadays. I think we should all try to do a better job in trying to politely help the internet truly understand the difference, so search engines follow suit. Sometimes I just want one or the other lol outrun and vaporwave are two different moods, two different forms of art that are beautiful in their own ways. They shouldn't be lumped in with each other.... they each deserve individual appreciation.

If you ever listened to more Synthwave songs than just Resonance you'll actually find that Resonance is kinda.... ehhhhh. I mean, it's not bad but it's rather decent.
(Of course with that said you have to search kinda hard for those good Synthwave songs)
It’s not synthwave it’s chillwave jesus
"I am dog, if you word, can cheese be fact?"
Of course this qoute is absolutely exquisite in it's complexion but many simple minded people can't fathom to possibly understand it's deep entrenched meaning.

You sir, have harmed my car loving heart.
I swear if anybody sends me an aesthetic photo of a roman statue and it they say that it's OUTRUN,I am going to lose all faith I had in them before that moment.
i like outrun more since its blade runner, altered carbon and cyberpunk 2077
Thank you my brotheren
But cyberpunk is supposed to be a whole other genre. I am very confusion :o
Voli Boi That’s just cyberpunk.
Thats more cyberpunk except blade runner which is a combination of all three
I love both
To put it simply, Vaporwave is the Saint Petersburg to Moscow's Outrun.
Awesome to see myself in this video. Thanks for the plug bro
Ultimate TL;DR:
Outrun is Ryan Gosling.
Vaporwave is not.
Outrun is KAVINSKY
So outrun is literally me
This is why outrun is better
This popped into my suggestions and I’m not mad at all you honestly deserve more subs
Thank you for reafirming everything i already knew. i got into it in tik tok cause this girl said an outrun post was vaporwave and i said it wasnt clearly pointing out the difference and since she was kind of cute all the simps started attacking me, now i am just posting the link to your video and claiming checkmate.
Now I must change my nickname in outrun_meme instead vaporwave_Meme thanks you helped me to find my self 😂
Haha, you are welcome! Thanks for stopping by
You're still VaporWave doh
@@KEIO-qd1zx it's hard to change because I like vaporwave and outrun too so 😂
Well?..
@@vaporwave_meme5108 Honest
Vaporwave can be 80's as long as it's corporate
Vaporwave : nostalgia chill
Outrun : ultra chill
Thanks foreign man, you’ve helped me understand the difference between these two aesthetics that are far too often mistaken for the same thing.
Vaporwave has more pastel than Outrun, Outrun is neon.
The intro is too damn cool
"...or maybe they're a portal to a better RUclips channel..."
I see that NakeyJakey reference
knows the difference of outrun and vaporwave but called the AE86 “this car”
Ikr rip
He's obviously not a car guy
I think "Ferrari Countach" was worse
That Corolla just another shitbox
Ikr, that car is legendary
Another video I'm glad to have been recommended by RUclips.
I was really expecting more discussion about the music itself and not pictures/video
call me shocked but I always think of outrun as a visual and vaporwave as music and an aesthetic
@Krischenn outturn is another name for Synthwave as well
See you can't make a difference sin music video as they are very clearly different
Glad I've found you in my feed out of nowhere, as a high synthwave and 80s music fanatic thank you for making all these videos
Those 608 dislikes are clowns who still mix up with the both
Look your whole video was perfect until you said Ferrari countach, 9.8 out of 10
Hehe, car knowledge was never one of my strengths. Still, i really appreciate that 9.8, it gives me 0.2 to get better at. Thanks!
That, and not mentioning Kavinsky who came out way earlier than Gosling & Refn.
Evan Watson I though it was just a joke to piss off car people, I am certainly a car person but I appreciated it as a poke of fun at the culture. 😂
That NakeyJakey insert..👌👌
I love this video but my man just said “Ferrari Countach” 😂
Both are wonderful, I prefer the pastel future funk Vaporwave
ssplintergirl that’s also one of my favorite looks, maybe it’s because i like the future funk music scene so much
They still made us use Times New Roman back in 2012
I still use it
They still make us use it NOW
..."waporvave". whyyyy.
But yeah, wasn't even aware Outrun was something different. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
I always felt that vapourwave mocks consumerism in a sarcastic way
That’s what the original intent of vaporwave
Outrun: The Spice must flow.
Vaporwave: May the Force be with you.
Darksynth: From the Eye of Terror, we come to kill.
Outrun-Darksynth (I forgot the name of this genre): One vision, one purpose.
¡Gracias por los subtítulos! No hay mucho contenido Synth/Vapor en español, y esto despeja muchas dudas. Suscrito (Y)
8:38 did I just hear him say “Ferrari Countach”? ITS A LAMBO YOU WALNUT
You only have 9k subs? Deadass. You should have more! I got recommended this video so expect to blow up!
Haha, I am already blowing up mate, i had under 1k a week ago
@@PINKAS1 Nice, good for you. Please keep this up and improve your quality over time 👍
It’s been a wonder finding your video making its way through RUclips’s algorithm! :)
(P.S.: love your work, man.)
Thank you, glad you found me lol
i get annoyed when people call something clearly outrun vaporwave lol
Me too, especially because the visual aesthetics are pretty different.
Bruh the aesthetics barely have any purpose who should care about that
Get a life then
Nice work man, I think you explained the differences really well.
I rarely subscribe to channels, but when I do, I make sure they're great. You made that happen with one video.
Thank you so much!
@@PINKAS1 No problem ❤
So basically outrun is something like The Midnight.
Outrun : Blade Runner
Vaporwave : anime in the 80s
Dude I was so hyped by this video. Never heard of the term "outrun" before since I'm interested in vaporwave. Aesthetic means so much too me and the fact that some people are wondering what's the actual differences and nuances is insane
To be honest I like both of these equally, I've been calling everything mentioned in this video vaporwave lol. I'ma just say I'm a fan of both ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Same dude
@RetroCrow - *Ditto!* Hey, how’d you make that cool shrugging shrugger🤷🏻♂️?
They are both good but nahh am into synthwave and synthpop
Even though I didn't know what outrun was, I never got outrun and vaporwave confused.
vaporwave: 90s shopping malls and Windows OS
outrun: 80s movies/tv shows and synthesizers
I've heard of the Lambourghini Countach, but not the Ferrari *KOONTASH*
The Countach isn't a Ferrari, it's a Lamborghini

“ w a p o r w a v e “
The way you "drew lines" between vaporwave and outrun earned you an early sub.
Ohhh Ms Hoffsted...
this was in my recommendation months ago, and now im here as a synthwave, vaporwave, outrun, retrowave and chillwave lover ;)
Absolutely, I would def agree that Vaporwave evolved from seapunk
Simple explanation:
Purple = Vaporwave
Dark purple = Outrun
Him being honest about his frequency is the most refreshing things. And thank you for the amazing work
