      I once saw her perform with her leg in a plaster cast at a Banshees gig in Cardiff, apparently after falling off the stage at an earlier concert on the tour. I heard some people who were standing at the back complaining afterwards that they couldn't see her and asking why she wasn't galloping round the stage as usual. Clearly it didn't affect the intensity of her vocals at all.

    This collaboration was one of these rare planets alignments in art: two creative creatures like Robert Smith and Steve Severin, collaborating and partying over years with the very center driven Siouxsie ! No wonder that she never liked anybody saying no to her, like any « independant entitled woman » 😂 while Steve and Robert remained friends, keeping memories of all good moments even if this was exhausting as they said many times in interviews.
    The legacy is this wonderful gem: Hyena, with a spark of Cure and Siouxsie in every song ! The album is a classic and comes with splendid artwork and one the best pictures of the members.

    I remember hearing the news that John McKay and Kenny Morris had left the Banshees and thinking the gig we were going to attend at the Brighton Top Rank was going to be cancelled. Luckily it wasn't and I remember thinking how amazing Robert Smith was to not only be heading up The Cure on their first big act support tour but also to play the whole set for the Banshees. Quite incredible. A truly memorable gig - Athletico Spizz 80 Lead Singer Spizz simply wanted to be spat at and vigorously urged the crowd to spit at him whilst he sat on the edge of the stage ironically shouting "Happy Birthday 1976 !!!!" , he was wearing an all red outfit and was simply dripping in spit and gob after a few minutes which he seemed to be enjoying far too much !! The gig went from one extreme to the other, the crazy zany almost psychotic Spizz to the The bright energetic spiky Cure with the incredible "stringsmith" at the helm, I just couldn't take my eyes of young Bob I just had that feeling I was amongst greatness that night. So when it came to the finale for the broken Romford Punkster fashionistas to swing into action you could tell Siousxie was in a playful mood the tension was in the air and then she stopped singing half way through a song to address a rather lively pogoing spitting punk audience stating and I quote "STOP SPITTING at me !!!!! If anyone else spits at me we will not play any more songs" Needless to say the punk hoardes submiitted to the Queens request and we all had a jolly good time.

    Siouxsie went through a lot of guitarists, John McGeoch, John Valentine Corruthers & Robert smith to name just three…..
    When Smith “guested” for tours and studio time, she playfully nick named him “the pop star” as he had had several chart hits already with The Cure

    • @kalevala29
      @kalevala29 3 месяца назад +1

      It appears to me that this demonstrates ruling with an iron fist isn't always advisable. Siouxsie, for instance, was particularly tough on her guitarists, very demanding. They managed to rebound, but McGeough should have been given time to recover. I believe the only thing keeping Robert in the band was Severin.

    • @johnnyhock

      Yes that’s correct, Steven Severin and Robert Smith were very close friends during that period. Even though Smith was never a permanent member of the Banshees as it was more of him “doing them a favour and filling in between guitarists, because Severin was his mate”
      Smith never stopped his work with The Cure - he just took a hiatus while he helped out with the Banshees - and he & Severin also collaborated on several other projects outside of the Banshees, including their album under the band name “The Glove”
      McGeoch eventually reemerged as the guitarist in John Lydon’s P.I.L. where he did some of his best work, before giving it all away and training as a nurse !

    The intensity of artistic expression and output in the early 1980's still astounds me. Always loved The Glove, The Creatures, the "Hyaena" LP, and the Cure's creativity of that time.
    But it's the steadfast endurance of music that inspires, emotes a deeper spirit, and aspires for the classic... Not too many singers/artist/musicians can reach so high and root so deep.

    Nocturne is simply one of the best moments of the Banshees and of Smith's guitar playing. He takes what McGeoch did to a more terrifying level that Severin was able to match with lots of cool pedals. Severin was using two of the same powerful flange in a row at the time. I saw Nocturne in a record shop before I knew what it was and grabbed The Scream instead bc I like to start at a bands beginning. I regret that now a bit but ofc The Scream has seen a ton of time on my record player.

    He was also a fill-in Banshee during the late summer of 1979, when the Banshees had lost John McKay (guitar) and Kenny Morris (drums) only hours before a gig in Aberdeen, Scotland. He had offered to fill in for McKay until the other Banshees eventually found John McGeoch as a full-time guitarist.
    Budgie, last of the band the Slits, was also intended to be a fill-in drummer but Siouxsie liked his drumming style so much he stayed with them until their 1996 breakup, and was even married to her from 1991 to 2007.

    Possibly already mentioned but The Banshees' mad version of The Lord's Prayer didn't become a feature of their live set after it was recorded for Join Hands. It was the other way around. In fact it was the first thing they ever played at that notorious 100 Club gig with Sid on drums and Marco Pirroni on guitar. Because they hadn't actually written anything at that point and weren't even sure if they would be playing again. The versions they played subsequently would be largely improvised and would include comments on the gig and the audience. Not always complementary. The recorded version on Join Hands was pretty lacklustre by comparison.
