In Europe where they are considered to be excellent sport fish (fighters) as well as the top 3 in flavor and a beautiful, flaky texture. If you want a fantastic deep fried piece of fish or a fish sandwich? This is the fish you want. It has a unique, fish oil taste (not fishy, but more like a Hazelnut flavor ) not found in any other fish...

Ever found them tape worms in the walleye around there? Here in lake Huron most of the time the walleye have tape worm in the stomachs. I try to avoid poking the gut because of that

I cut on both sides of the ‘red’ line, then ‘unzip’ them. You should cut cheeks out, best meat on fish. I also cut jaw meat out or cut ‘wings’.

I've cleaned a LOT of Walleye during my years in ND and MN. I've never seen the pull-apart method. Thanks for sharing!

  • @patricktrickey7146

Your first method is the same way I do my walleye. Only difference is I make two cuts on the fillet, pull the pin bones out instead of cutting them out plus you take out the blood line. Nice vid.

I like the video "how to filet a walleye fast" from Mark Arneson of Arneson's resort of Lake of the Woods MN. Noteworthy is how to take the rib cage area out. I think you'll find this helpful to add in your technique.

He should use the zipper method to remove the pin or y-bones. Initially make 2 cuts, 1 on each side of lateral line at tail. Then just zip and zip off. Much quicker and simpler. Also, on second method, rib bones should be carved out of filet BEFORE you skin it. Skin provides firm backing and you will loose less belly meat.

If you slice 2 inches long a quarter inch on each side of the red line you can pull each side of bones off. Much easier.

New fisher here. Happened to land two walleyes, 22” and 24”.
No one I know has pulled walleye that big out of my lake.
I accidentally butchered them because I had no idea what I was doing.
Total edible meat left was less than 1 fillet. 😫
