There are a few ways I'd describe knuckles personality before they just made him the dumb tough guy. He was gullible but good hearted, usually assuming he was doing the right thing. I think the thing with Knuckles is that "dutiful guardian of the Master Emerald, who has a hard time trusting people because he's been tricked before" is a really good starting position for a character arc. I don't think anyone really wants that to be his whole thing forever but they want to be able to draw a line back to that from wherever he ends up.
I kinda wish that instead of trying to come up with a bunch of weird sonic worlds, that they had just stuck with the eggman ruled one and fleshed that out more cause it felt like the most interesting to me.
I binged Prime the other day, honestly... I felt it was fine, nothing incredible but not bad either. I'm actually interested to see where it goes at least, if or when they continue it.
Shadow, in terms of character is closer to Piccolo in Dragon Ball instead of Vegeta. He's direct, but he's caring. He also has an undying loyalty to his ragtag group. Piccolo's relationship with Gohan is comparable to Shadows relationship with Team Dark (Rogue and Omega). At first he dislikes him, but come Sonic 06, he fully trusts them. Even when he figures out that Omega kills him in the future, he puts his faith in them. His loyalty to his friends and his promise to Maria (his friend who got shot down by the government) to protect the people come together with this character defining line "if the world chooses to be my enemy, I will fight like I always have." Stating his conviction and promising to continue to protect planet earth. Now he's an edgelord who doesn't have any friends. It's sum bullshit
You hit the nail on the head. He was conceived to be the polar opposite to Sonic, which in a way is still true, but because every character got way more shallow in the past 10 years, it just means he's now pure contempt to modern Sonic's pure MCU snark.
Wouldn’t say he's closer to piccolo with either considering their different approaches. There's not really a direct comparison to a DragonBall character since shadow's whole premise is appearing one way, but secretly being something else.
What's most surprizing to me about Sonic Prime is that it took me so long to realize they have Man of Action working on it, and you can really tell during the action scenes that they have a very Ben 10 original series esque quinetic vibe.

I can't seem to draw sonic characters on model and looking even halfway decent, so I just started drawing them in my own style and I like it a lot more. I can't say if they would be immediately identifiable, but I feel satisfied with them and I think that's what matters
As a person who’s favorite character is knuckles, i think he needs his own game or like a media that can make people understand him more. He’s the last of his kind and guards the master emerald and in things recently like frontiers he wants to move away from doing that duty all the time to do a few more things outside of his island or learn about his past which is very interesting to me
They gotta give Tails his own game too. Imagine something like Armored Core where Tails finally goes all out and just builds a death machine to pilot against other robots, except he can eject himself whenever and fly to safety or fight on foot.
I really do like hearing you talk about these topics, though I will admit that most of the art tips fly over my head still, I still like your takes on topics.
I always got Piccolo vibes from Knuckes, not sure why. Shadow is... I'm not sure what they're doing with him anymore. I kinda disagree with your point about knuckles, it isn't just like he became boring stoic guy just cause of shadow introduction but mostly because he never got a chance on the spotlight like a luigi, wario or even zero from megaman had to be in a spin-off game, he's quite a interesting character especially because he's the opposite of sonic in about everything heck even in a design standpoint classic Sonic belly was supposed to be shaped like a sun and knuckles was the moon, carefree vs duty, extroverted x introverted and so on, even in SA2 he got his own rival being rouge just like sonic got shadow, honestly Sega being scared to ever make something with him it's what truly ruined him and just screams wasted potential and reduces his character to the big tough stupid one, because unlike sonic who gets in to trouble by himself finding his macguffins, trouble comes to his home because of his duty and his macguffin rock. It's just kinda sad honestly. At least he got bat booba lady I guess...
You are talking here for digital drawings, but I noticed when I draw that I prefer to draw smaller because the thickness and texture of the pencil stroke feels right, bigger drawings feel less detailed because of that Also I like hearing about artists "struggles", how to get that kind of line n texture etc, it's informative "uh I've never thought of that, this could be usefull"
I kinda use the setting on my brushes for clip where it adjusts your brushes size depending on screen size, and i feel like it helps me personally when i go in and out and working at my resolution where i don't have to adjust brush size too much while still being able to use a smaller brush size

The conspiracy nut aspect is a massive part of Sticks' appeal, they can't do away with it. Maybe they could just make it less comical. Also Knuckles was introduced as a fish out of water knucklehead who gets fooled easily, that's how he is in Sonic 3 and Adventure. Sonic Heroes is when he started being just kinda there. Being serious about guarding the M.E. was also always a part of his character, they basically just took things away with the years (it's flanderization I guess?)
I think most fans want Shadow to be more of a brooding, stoic, no nonsense kinda character. his promise to Maria and his self-confidence lead him to push others away because it'd both put them in danger and in his mind, slow him down. the few he sees as equals, like Sonic, are treated with bluntness and little social grace. sort of like a Batman if Batman was way worse at making friends. SEGA seems to want to push him more in the direction of being aloof, rude, and self-serving. his promise to Maria doesn't really seem to have any meaning to his character, and his self-confidence just makes him act with little caution. and he's an ass to pretty much everyone regardless. he's kinda like Vegeta if Vegeta had little-to-no arc potential. honestly, I think the best example of a good portrayal of Shadow is SMBZ, ironically. the Dragon Ball Z-styled fan-created Mario + Sonic crossover has the best Shadow.
So, having played the original games, and adventure 2, shadow was... a thing. He was supposed to be the dark reflection of sonic, one who is just as strong and fast but was mean and and had no morals holding him back from his goals, at least at first. Comparing him to knuckles is a really solid comparison, because he wakes up from being frozen by Eggman with amnesia, and gets manipulated by Eggman to get the chaos emeralds. Iirc his initial motivation is to have Eggman restore his memory, which starts coming back on his own while he's doing his dirty work. Eventually he develops a 'freindship' with Rouge and that one robot from adventure 1, and remembers his past as an artifical life form and protector for a sick little girl from a sci-fi colony on the Moon years and years ago, and eventually ejected him from the colony before he was going to be killed or used as a lab rat. So yeah his deal is that he is caught between these two identities; the dangerous edgy villain with no rules, and the guardian and friend of a sweet, innocent girl who risked her life to save him (its pretty ambiguous if she died in the process of saving him)... so yeah
I know it's been said but always good to just confirm it more so, but the whole season is 24 episodes, but netflix split it up, so having it just end after episode 8 is super annoying. once it's all out it'll feel way more better, the first 8 episodes are pretty much just set up with zero payout. as those will come as the rest of the episodes come out.
my understanding of why the season ends the way it does is because that's not actually the end of the season. They made 24 episodes but netflix only released the first 8
Ok. Gotta be honest, how did you watch Prime and not realize Jungle Knuckles was a Sticks reference, if you were looking for a Sticks reference. That, is impressive
what knuckles characters is his supposed to protect his green rock being that his last of species. This left him isolated from the outside world. which is what the sonic movie version focuses on. (artist ended running the story of knuckles when the dragon age people decided to make sonic and the dark brother which caused no more echidna-based characters). after sonic adventure 2 they made knuckles more and more dumb (granted they did make him get easily tricked in the adventure 1). then changed him into a jerk then changed him again to some leader figure for fight against Eggman. sonic boom knuckles is a parody of modern-day knuckles, tho being good version of him. back then the Witters who just looking at the wiki most likely got influenced by boom knuckles. also they added sticks to the canon.
Mentioning Goku and Vegeta is the right track, I think. From someone who mostly knew the characters from the earlier comics and special issues and the first few games, Sonic is like if Goku was a cocky asshole and Knuckles is like Vegeta if he grew up a country bumpkin in the woods like Goku.
You mentioned that all the TV shows in the 80s were toy commercials. Considering that they're based on video games, aren't the Sonic shows also toy commercials, in a way? Or am I just trying too hard to be cheeky?
I think the problem your having with the Texture getting washed out at high res is probably your anti aliasing settings, if you reduce the force of the AA you may get a better result. Old Basic AA is terrible at preserving detail
God, I've been having that same problem in CSP, trying to keep the texture of the brush or pen I use, but sizing the brush up gets rid of the exact sharpness or texture I desire. Even if I try messing with the pressure sensitivity or the properties, nothing seems to look quite how I like it. My canvases are usually pretty big (not HUGE but enough that I might consider downsizing like you are

SEGA seems to want to push him more in the direction of being aloof, rude, and self-serving. his promise to Maria doesn't really seem to have any meaning to his character, and his self-confidence just makes him act with little caution. and he's an ass to pretty much everyone regardless.
he's kinda like Vegeta if Vegeta had little-to-no arc potential.
honestly, I think the best example of a good portrayal of Shadow is SMBZ, ironically. the Dragon Ball Z-styled fan-created Mario + Sonic crossover has the best Shadow.
happy new year mate
my man included the dang camel tow XD
Man that title threw me for a loop
Here's to 2023 being a good year for you and everyone!
my first video for January
setting the tone for the new year right
So, having played the original games, and adventure 2, shadow was...
So yeah his deal is that he is caught between these two identities; the dangerous edgy villain with no rules, and the guardian and friend of a sweet, innocent girl who risked her life to save him (its pretty ambiguous if she died in the process of saving him)... so yeah
Shadow wasn't manipulated by eggman or had amnesia in adventure 2. He was helping eggman gather emeralds because a his own secret motives.
Erroneously, it was the other way around. Shadow was using Eggman for world annihilation.
I know it's been said but always good to just confirm it more so, but the whole season is 24 episodes, but netflix split it up, so having it just end after episode 8 is super annoying. once it's all out it'll feel way more better, the first 8 episodes are pretty much just set up with zero payout. as those will come as the rest of the episodes come out.
your voice its oddly nice to hear, it works perfectly as background noise while I study
my understanding of why the season ends the way it does is because that's not actually the end of the season. They made 24 episodes but netflix only released the first 8
I’m really hoping whisper makes an appearance. Wishful thinking, but it is what it is.
Shaming people for not watching the entire video is a bold tactic to get people to watch the entire video.
Lovely as always
Good news plague it worked
Rouge is the best 🦇 *BUT* ...do anybody remember Bunny Rabbot?🐰
Ok. Gotta be honest, how did you watch Prime and not realize Jungle Knuckles was a Sticks reference, if you were looking for a Sticks reference. That, is impressive
I think you would love FF from Stone Ocean. Their desire is wanting to be human in their own strange way. Also happy new year.
what knuckles characters is his supposed to protect his green rock being that his last of species.
This is good and all, but when are you gonna draw some of "gulp" amy's spike's?
Hi Eli, as always good to hear you, the advice you have given has caused me to go back out on dates .... thank you Plague
how do i find you though? i typed in plauge of gripes
Knockles approves this meme.
Real Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo vibes 😤
You mentioned that all the TV shows in the 80s were toy commercials. Considering that they're based on video games, aren't the Sonic shows also toy commercials, in a way? Or am I just trying too hard to be cheeky?
Very neat good job sir I love it thank you for sharing
Your welcome sir looking forward to see your next artwork take care
I think the problem your having with the Texture getting washed out at high res is probably your anti aliasing settings, if you reduce the force of the AA you may get a better result. Old Basic AA is terrible at preserving detail
I don't understand the brush thing, maybe just use a sharper brush (never used CSP I draw paint using Krita) ?
28:09 wouldn't really say it's that simple. Honestly being fully described by any singular word isn't a good sign for the character.
Yay more drawing tutorials :)
Yes more plag of grapes!
God, I've been having that same problem in CSP, trying to keep the texture of the brush or pen I use, but sizing the brush up gets rid of the exact sharpness or texture I desire. Even if I try messing with the pressure sensitivity or the properties, nothing seems to look quite how I like it. My canvases are usually pretty big (not HUGE but enough that I might consider downsizing like you are
this is good and all, but when will dominatrix Tails make a comeback?
And thats what I'm so upset now
I should join the patreon for an animation
I love plauge, he's the best farmer artist.
I need to wait pacience to the next animation........
They really did Rouge fans dirty with that design
