i actually like how Luffy kinda comes off as creepy because i feel like that's exactly how Luffy would seem if he were real, and it shows how unhinged he is as a character.
Imagine taking a character who's completely numb to fear and pain and have him try to interract with normal people who don't have that kind of luxury and that's exactly what they did and it's great.
He's whimsical but creepy, kind of like Peter Pan.

Honestly, I really didn't like their Luffy actor at all. He didn't even seem that enthusiastic until the end where he finally gets genuinely excited and acts like Luffy for once, the rest of the time he's just kind-of off? Like he feels TOO subdued, right?
He's not going "I'm going to be... KING OF DA PIRAATEEESSS!!!!"
He's going "I'm gonna be- Kingovthe pirates...!"
And I think that's absolutely why he comes off so weird in this. He's missing that over the top joy and excitement, so you're just left with someone who feels wrong and they don't really understand where they are or what's going on, so they just hit super different.

I know you said you don't really remember a lot of aspects of One Piece, but to your comments regarding some aspects of the author not caring about certain aspects like how they get food, he does actually go into a lot of detail about it and is why the ship has the cook Sanji and the tangerine trees. A lot of time during their down time you also see them fishing or loading up on supplies between each island. They also do have a lot of money to buy whatever they need due to Nami being a thief.
One Piece is one of the few shows that really goes to fully express and explain every aspect of their world and it just feels a little shitty for it to ignored and tossed into the same box as everything else. Even the crew not doing "pirate" things is explained pretty well with the government aspects and how them doing whatever they want is highly illegal in their world.

    @note4note804 Год назад +87

Honestly the only issue i have so far with the live action show is quite simple: no one laughs. Luffy might have a permanent shit eating grin, but thats it. Ussop never laughs to hide his fear, nami never laughs when she lets her guard down, zoro never laughs to show he's more than a stoic warrior, etc. etc.
Laughter is such a core emotion in One Piece, not just because its comedic, but because it reveals character. Who laughs at what, who makes who laugh all gives characters depth.
The live action crew is competently written, but they rely way too much on characters telling us their feelings and emotions to move character arcs along.

Never forget that even as a kid Sanji was an expert at preserving food and making rations last longer than they're supposed to. So Sanji could absolutely keep them going for way longer than you'd think on WAY less than you'd ever expect. He also makes it a policy to never waste food, so whatever they get is something Sanji's going to make 100% complete use out of no matter what.

The series addresses the whole piracy thing. Luffy wants to be King of the Pirates simply because he thinks Roger was the freest person in the world, and that means not having to abide by any rules. That alone makes you a pirate (he also ended committing a few VERY henious crimes along the way). And the reason why the setting is about 'pirates' (or rather people who sail the world in ships) is simply because the planet is mostly covered in water.

I thought about trying to get into it but got intimidated by the length of it. And that's just from reading the manga and not touching the anime. But I'm glad one piece fans are getting something at least not terrible.

I would highly recommend checking out the manga if you're ever interested. It's a surprisingly good read with the wildest part being that it's somehow still good and even the newest chapters are still dropping really cool emotional revelations that change how fans look at stuff that happened 10 years ago in the story.
It's also finally at least nearing something like a conclusion. After the current arc there's going to be one more and then we'll PROBABLY hit the final island before we just go for the big treasure and inevitably have a massive final arc war over it. So there's a weirdly realistic chance that if someone starts and goes at a steady pace, they could catch up right as we get into the final battle with all the revelations that's going to come with it. So that's something.

The whole "moral ambiguity" of the setting went out the window once the Celestial Dragons were introduced anyway. Before that point you could make the argument that ultimately the Marines are the good guys and that the system just has some problems. But once you see the entire system from the top-down, no matter how good-intentioned the individual Marine like Garp, exists for the sole purpose of supporting the whims of these monsters who see themselves as above humanity (and Imu above them), then at that point no. I want the Revolutionary Army to win, maybe the good marines will create something good out of the ashes after everything is burned down.

They just never had to kuz things were always given to them as gratitude. On Skypea, Luffy finds hella gold inside a snake and the crew wakes up early to steal it. The townsfolk see that the strawhats are leaving and they haven't given them anything other than food so they start chasing the strawhats to give them gold but the strawhats think they've been caught stealing so they run away. So the answer to how they fund themselves is they're always given rewards like how you said in your vid, but if they ran out for some reason, they aren't against stealing

Piracy from Luffy's perspective is the romance of adventure and discovery and the freedom that comes with such a life, cause his influence was Shanks. It ties back to one of the original concepts for the story where Garp was a pirate and how he explains there are two types, those who pillage and plunder and those who seek adventure. This is the type of pirate Luffy, Roger, and Shanks are. Piracy in the one piece world generally refers to sea-faring criminals overall as opposed to people who do piratey things like pillaging, and this is shown through the antagonist throughout the story. My ultimate takeaway with the live action is that (1) sometimes you should just let animated stories stay in the flexibility of that medium instead of adapting it, and (2) even if the actors are trying their hardest, that can't account for all sorts of other issues sapping the show's quality, some of which goes back to point 1.

I fit your inquiry! East Blue was super goofy and unfocused. Fortunately I used the movies to catch up on those arcs. I used an episode guide to skip fillers up to and catch up on arcs up to Skypea. Solid pacing w/o the filler, does a fantastic job establishing the heart and makes you believe in Luffy's dream along with the new crew. Very much an "enjoy the journey" kind of situation. After Water 7, I had to go to the manga because at that point its so focused on the external conflict that it loses its strength in showing its heart. As a result, the pacing issues are waaaay more distracting. Overall One Piece is an alright series with PHENOMENAL moments and filled to the brim with heart. I would not be surprised to find that Oda is a people person because his character are incredibly likable while having their own personalities and goals.

I was completely new to One Piece before the live action, and I got very attached to the vibe and the characters very quickly. Maybe it's just because so much of what's coming out of Hollywood these days is overly complicated and preachy (at best), but I had no idea just how much I was craving something good and kind and wholesome. It's simple, but deep. It's fun and childlike, but it's also honest and nuanced with its life lessons. The actors can be inexperienced at times, but they care so much about what they're doing and it shows. The show just encouraged me to turn off the critical part of my brain and enjoy something for once, and for that I'm very grateful.

Early on the money thing was more justified because it's like they get a bunch of money from the island Buggy raids, right? And then they go and save a rich girl who gives them a boat and some supplies, and then they have a whole adventure in Sky Island where they get a bunch of money from the city of gold, which actually comes into play in Water 7 because they basically have to pay for repairs and discuss the payment and stuff.
So yeah, that's all good enough. And then I don't remember a single time where they really had a big score after that point...? Like they get to Thriller Bark, pay for stuff in Sabaody, then Impel Down and the Paramount War happened, there was a time skip......... Maybe Brook's paying for stuff with his newfound musician fame, but other than that, you know...? Just never really comes up.

    - The old guy was Dr. Hiriluk. He was generally hated because he was a quack doctor who did nothing to help his patients, although he sincerely wanted to. His death inspired actual doctors to follow his principles (everyone deserves medical treatment), however the majority were held under duress by Wapol anyway for years.
    - Going against the World Government and sailing wherever the hell you want is good enough to label you a pirate in One Piece's setting. Oda originally planned on making "types of pirates" (so Luffy would call himself a Peace-Main) but it's honestly less awkward to just imply that adventurers and treasure hunters are considered pirates as well.
    - The crew fishing and eating weird creatures is actually a pretty frequent plot point, like Zoro and Sanji's hunting contest. Otherwise they usually just go "Sanji is in charge of stockpiling provisions", using left over treasure money. No idea how they keep Luffy fed.

22:39 The best part of this is Zoro canonically doesn't even talk with his mouth when he's fighting in the manga. According to Oda, when someone asked "hey how does Zoro talk so clearly with a sword in his mouth", Oda said that, "when in 3-sword style, Zoro talks with his heart, not his mouth so everyone understands him." That is such a complete nonsense, Looney Toons answer that Oda clearly pulled out of his ass and yet at the same time you completely buy it because that's the kind of setting One Piece has. Nowadays you can probably chalk it up to him just using haki to communicate but that was a good answer for the time because someone having the will to do something in OP is just as if not more powerful than actually doing it. Willpower literally is magic in One Piece, as haki shows.

The One Piece Netflix show shows that it is possible to make a good live-action adaptation. Also, while the show has a lot of diversity and some of the race swapping (for example, I don't remember Nami's sister being black in the anime) they did isn't cringe, it is not in your face with it or even points it out. It's like in the real world. People of so many different shades, races, cultures, etc. exist and it is nothing to be angry or happy about. It just is. And yes, there will always be people that will hate on diversity, but when a show is done well and the diversity is done like this, it makes it even harder for anyone to agree with those miserable individuals.

    1. The Awakened zoan jail guards at Impel Down are actually regular humans that ate devil fruits. Instead of achieving true Awakening, they could only manage false Awakenings. Chopper's Monster Point is essentially this condition.

Coby and Helmeppo had one such story where they end up training with Garp after Ax hand Morgan tries to escape. So when they reappear in Water Seven there's a payoff for those who noticed it. The Anime used to cover such side stories but it's not as common later on.

Personally - I really liked it. if they continue, this will be my main venue to watch the show. Sanji is my favorite, being a flirt, but not a creepy anime perv. Zoro, Grandad and Mihawk were really cool. You are right, that Luffy seems like the most awkward of the crew, but he's also dealing with the most wacky cartoon character personality. I think he just needs to tone down the smile a little, to not look as psychotic. And in general it feels good to have episode where *shit happens* and they don't explain attacks for 3 minutes.
