Robbie, you have such great inventions.🙂
You mentioned using lids to shade plants during one of your garden tours. I had tried using wet newspaper to cover my carrot seeds causing them to germinate quicker. I got this idea from another RUclips gardener. However using this method I got mold growing with my sprouting seeds!😕 The next day after hearing you mention about using the lids to shade plants I got my tot lid, shaded my carrot tot-planter and in 24-48 hours almost all my seeds had germinated! 🥳 And no mold!🙂
    Thanks Robbie!🙂

I just did this two weeks ago, I already have three feeders on the patio and I put three more in my backyard one over east side and one over west side and one over north side. I tied them to my picket fence to tree limb with parachute ropes. Now I see 3 hummingbirds each one now sitting on the parachute rope beside the feeder like it belong to them. No more fighting as they have their own. Fun to watch them.

I had a hummingbird that kept sitting on top of the shepherds hook guarding the feeder . I happen to put up an umbrella on my balcony. The hummingbird doesn’t sit their anymore. I wonder if it decided to go in a tree where it can see better. Wow maybe I had a type of blinder without knowing It was a blinder. I just thought he didn’t like the umbrella. I guess it blocked his view. Interesting. I like your idea. This hummingbird was a bully lol Ty for posting

You are so smart! I live in an apt so my patio in the back is small. I have a hummingbird who sits on my kumquat tree or the fence and scares everyone off, except a couple who I assume are his siblings. I don’t know what to do. Any ideas? I have 2 feeders, they always have plenty of food. How come they don’t fight at all the feeders by your window?

Great ideas as always! I need help with the house finches. I never knew I had so many in my yard. They are constantly on the hummingbird feeders. They are adorable also but I told them they have to share. I even bought them a finch sock and they are even more on the feeders... any advice would be great. Thanks for another great video.✌❤🙏

My grandmother ended up just taking out all the feeders except for the ones only the hummingbirds were able to use. If you stop giving them something to come for, they wont show up. Idk what a finch sock is. But I'm assuming it's one of those little hang8ng nests and by providing them with a nice cozy place to sleep or nest is just asking them to populate your yard/land. Lol

Yet another reason to mix more sugar in your syrup!! For those hummers that can only grab a quick sip or two before being chased off by a dominant bird. By weight a 1:4 mix is only 17% sucrose; a 1:3 mix is 22%; a 1:2 mix is 30%. Filling your feeders with 1:2 sugar means that a weaker bird can grab 76% more sugar each time it manages to steal a sip, giving it a much better chance of getting the energy it needs.
How did I come up with those numbers? One cup sugar weighs 200 grams; 1 cup water weighs 237 grams. A 1:4 mix is 200g + 948g = 1148g. Percent sugar by weight is (200 / 1148) x 100 = 17.4%, the other mixes follow in the same way. At 30% sugar by weight, a 1:2 mix is much closer to the 30-35% sucrose content of natural flower nectar preferred by hummers. Don't be afraid to do it - you're not gonna kill 'em - they've been managing their diet for thousands of years - and... You'll be helping those hummers that are constantly being chased away by dominant birds... - waw -
BTW: Benjamin F Tucker was among the first to mass-feed hummers in the 1940s. He made his own feeders using laboratory glassware. His work is described in the December 1946 Popular Mechanics story "Hummingbird Cafeteria." The lead photo shows 22 of his 'flask' feeders lined up on wood shelves. A quote from page 125: "If you supply artificial nectar - half water and half sugar - he'll stay long after blooming time." Sounds like a 1:1 mix to me - 46% sugar by weight and I don't believe he poisoned any hummers... (Yes, PM December 1946 may be found on-line - I'll let you figure that out for yourself...)

My feedersare on the front porch. The Hummingbird was a great source of entertainment this summer and I was so excited when more came. But the bully bird would not share so I put another feeder out. He wouldn't let them eat from the second feeder either. I have seen up to 5 at one time, but the bully sits in the tree and runs the others off. I wanted to put him in time out. I hope your ideas work for me!

I just got me a four flower hummingbird feeder and it said on the box plus food including 8 oz of hummingbird food makes 32 oz of liquid nectar how much of the nectar would I put in to my four flowered hummingbird feeder I'm kind of lost the directions really don't make too much sense but the food that they sent me is dried up food I guess it will dissolve I think it says yeah it will dissolve mixes two tablespoons of dry nectar with 4 oz of water stir until completely dissolved makes two makes 32 oz 1 quart of liquid nectar any unused liquid nectar is best stored in the refrigerator and a closed container you recommend you clean hummingbird feeders between each refill how would I make more nectar like do you have a ingredient on what I could use to put in next time once I run out of this stuff

Are the feeders better with perches?? I noticed you’ve added perches to some. I bought three feeders last month, all without perches because I thought those were for larger birds, but I didn’t attract any hummingbirds. 😩 I’m going to order 2-3 new feeders with perches to see how things go next year. I think they’ve already left my area for this year.
If you added perches though, can you please show us how?

I did trap one once And he nearly killed himself trying to get out which was extremely stressful to watch so it is definitely not worth it. He had some stuff stuck to his foot that needed to be removed is the only reason I did it and was able to get it off of him and then immediately released him so he would stop almost harming himself trying to escape.
