On top of that there are so many youtube channels that are cranking multi-hour long video essays explaining how the power system works and things of that nature. I didn't truly understand why so many fans where doing this until I caught up with the manga. The manga is amazing, and I highly recommend you catch up/start reading if you enjoyed the anime.

After Gojo got sealed the manga got really bad imo. So many long explanation or plot point that go nowhere or end up with a plain bad reveal. The combats are overly explained like a bad version of hunter x hunter, maybe Gege idolized Togashi and tried to emulate his style but failed. I dont need a page full of text dedicated to explaining a random guys's power the same chapter hes getting defeated and never seen again. The combat also doesnt fit well in manga form, you get like 5 movements in 1 panel from 1 character and you dont get the intensity from it.

I was shocked to see it on the list because the anime is pure garbage that's why. Is there any redeeming good qualities about the anime at all? I don't really think there is honestly, even if you want to say the mystery element of it is good, it's really not there was nothing well thought out or deeply planned, nothing really written that well for a mystery honestly. Especially when you have anime like Monster and Death note that already set the bar high, it's got a lot it has to live up to and it fails. When it comes to mystery kinda gotta use that big brain and write it more complex, because the best part of mystery anime is solving the mystery and it should feel like an intelligent anime that actually makes you think and use your brain but at the same time not be predictable.

I can agree that s1 doesn’t stray too far from a standard shonen but it still has fantastically written and likeable characters with great fight scenes (in both the anime and the manga). And everything that happens in the manga afterwards is absolutely beloved by fans almost to the same level as the CSM manga. I read/watch what they recommend and am underwhelmed because it feels like many other shonen I've seen.

And yet I do think this feels like Kotaku’s list was made by mostly people who watch a ton of anime. In contrast, IGN’s recent top 25 anime (of all time, which is a bolder claim than merely ranking the last 10 years) felt like it was mostly made by people watching the most mainstream stuff with maybe one or two people trying to get some excellent non-mainstream stuff in there (nothing wrong with mainstream, but it does make lists predictable when the pattern becomes obvious). Even their solo shojo pick felt like a mainstream pick, Ouran was great, but it felt like it was there purely for being so well known in the 2000s, whereas other shojo like Nana or the new Fruits Basket would arguably be considered better.

But borderline slandering what Gege Akutami has been achieving with the manga ESPECIALLY in the last few chapters has been fucking excellent. That's not even mentioning the Shibuya Incident or the Culling Games which are both absolutely fantastic battle royale arcs that go fucking wild, and that's in just the manga. (Like for example, Beastars annoyed me because it was too school focused, and I was way more invested in the world outside of the school. I'm clearly a furry, but even the furry bait wasn't enough for me when they were focusing so much on dumb high school drama when it just felt pointless and wasted the world around it).
I thought I was gonna not really like Bocci too but... This one was different.
I suffer from severe social anxiety, and the way they handled it was incredible!! Not only in the execution but also in a way that gives people like me hope. I gave up a lot of my passions because of my social anxiety, and struggled in a lot of similar ways to Bocci. I couldn't help but cheer her on and watch her overcome her anxiety as the series progressed! I also love her friends too, learning to understand her and not treating her any different because of her anxiety (with the exception of giving her a bit of a push here and there). A show like this would have really helped me as a kid and I even find it helping me now even though I'm a grown adult.
Is the show absolutely perfect? Well... no. But I do think that this show has helped not only people who struggle with anxiety, but helps other people understand it more too who might have people in their life who struggle with it!

Just as Joey said, Subaru isn't OP, he's in fact a normal human, he's got to rely on others to protect him if he's in a fight as he can only do so much himself, which sometimes turns out to be just the right amount. He doesn't get isekaied into a new world only to instantly become 10 times stronger than even the strongest person alive in that world, or any such dumb shit like that, he's basically an example of what it would look like if any average joe had been plucked out from their world and placed in another world with no idea what is going on, nothing to their name, and no power to hide behind if things get tough. And all that's why I liked it so much even though I wasn't ever a big fan of the trope of do-overs and such.

Thoughts on JJK: Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the highest selling manga in Japan and overseas. Saying "no one" reads it and that the animation makes it great shows that you do just see it as another shonen. As someone who doesn't enjoy traditional battle shonen it is the only traditional series like that I have ever gotten into and really enjoyed. I read it and watch it and it's strength is the depth of it's characters and how they offer different perspectives on the world. Things I Think Belong On The List That Aren't: Made in Abyss, Girl's Last Tour, Yuru Camp, Sonny Boy, and FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that stood out to me as things that were deserving and lacking. To me they overplayed Bocchi's social anxiety from it being cute and funny into it being dull and transparent.
Is it the character arc and the coming-of-age narrative bits that is the most significant part that people are appreciating about this anime, or am I missing something here? It's a good anime for sure, but nothing above what we have seen so far in my oppinion.

And obviously the music. They released an album with literally 14 songs and they are all bangers. The characters are also great and have great chemistry with each other and play a huge role to how good this series is. And also the voice acting, Two of the main characters being relatively new absolutely killed it and made it amazing. 20:47 never seen Beck, but as someone who has seen and likes both K-On and Bocchi the rock, I'd choose BtR over K-On, musically speaking. K-On has bangers, but its music is a bit too poppy and bubbly for my taste. I think the music in BtR feels more "grounded" because it's more leaned toward alternative rock (despite I don't really listen to that genre a lot, but I can enjoy it sometimes). Another thing I like about BtR is the animation, it's very creative when it comes to portraying Bocchi's personality and situation. There are times when the animation "downgraded" into making Bocchi looking like a couple of squares, and there are times where they over-animate her. And there are also times where they use 3D CGI and stop-motion. It's refreshing to see CloverWorks uses various styles of animation in BtR.

TLDR: I think Joey will be proven incorrectly about Bocchi the Rock's impact on fans and the accolades that it deserves.
I think Joey is underestimating BTR's success and phenomenon. BTR is not your typical CGDCT anime; not only it has likeable characters, but it has very relatable characters, in a time when social anxiety in the current generation seems to be at an all time high. Also, unlike a majority of CGDCT anime, BTR has genuine character growth and story progression that has real goals that sorely lacking in K-On (if we're comparing anime about girl rock bands) or Watamote or Komi-san (if we're comparing anime about characters with severe social anxiety).
While I don't think this series will ever topple anime for the shounen demographic in the long run, but for just one season, it broke through against all of them, not unlike K-On, and I think that's remarkable. For what it's worth, even in the age of streaming video, BTR outsold Chainsaw Man in physical sales and its music album sold more than 100,000 copies in the first week! To me, that's not just remarkable, it shows that BTR has an immense impact on people.
I don't doubt that anyone who earnestly watched BTR and relates to its characters and themes will remember this series fondly, just as much if not more so than when people watched K-On back in the day. Does it deserve #12 on the list? I think it's appropriately rated, if not, it's underrated. Borrowing Ryo Yamada's words, Bocchi the Rock may not connect with everyone, but those it does, it'll hit deeply.
(As an aside, If I were to fix this list, I'd replace Kakegurui and Promised Neverland with Made in Abyss and March Comes in Like a Lion.)

Again this is a completely personal take.

I completely disagree with the take on Bocchi the Rock. The premise that BtR fans haven't watched K-ON or Beck is really not a good argument, it's not our fault that you grew up with those shows and got bored of seeing their relevancy througout the decade, now putting down BtR for "not being a new idea". I like BtR BECAUSE it's better executed than K-ON, it's more gripping, has more development in it's cast, and the plot was written to lead to something that put the characters under time pressure. The rest of the takes were fine, some where really good, but with BtR I feel like you fell for the trolls overpraising it and don't give it as much credit as it should get.
The real problem with this list is that we add all these shows in the past 10 years and make it a 2012-2022 list instead of taking a normal decade approach and having it span 2010 to 2020, without so much recency bias...

30:17 Caught up on Vinland Saga right now and tbh, I think it is better than the first season. It took everything that the first season explored and is going in much more depth with those topics in a way that focuses purely on character. Stripped of any action, the series really puts us in the place of Thorfinn and how war and violence has affected him in a way that makes him one of my favorite characters in recent memory. Part of me wants them to stay on the farm forever, but i know that in this world, that's not gonna happen.

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 Год назад

I very much agree with this... I think the series perfectly frames itself through the initial lesson that Thors wished he could teach to Thorfinn, which he couldn't pass on before he died. it's why a lot of shots are devoted to cutting back to Thors... he's always relevant.
in his grief, Thorfinn turns to anger as a motivating force, but that anger is less about his love for Thors, and more about his hatred of Askeladd. violence isn't proof of love... it's something that frustrated people do to punish the world. this is how it becomes cyclical, and this is why it's hypocritical. if Thorfinn causes pain equal to what he's felt, then he is also forfeiting his right to peace. he can't ask to live well if he's still committed to sowing discontent with his own hands. the cycle of violence has to stop somewhere, and sometimes, you have to choose to stop it yourself. and that takes a lot more effort than letting yourself fall off the deep end into the endless search for retribution, which will never bring back the thing you're actually missing. the truth is, if you want to see something you love thrive in this world, you have to know how to create peace, and maintain it. additionally, if Thorfinn wants to prove that he cares about Thors, he would do so a lot more effectively by considering the man's perspective. it would be more meaningful to keep his legacy alive by embracing the philosophy that he thought was important. and that's what season 2 is all about.
