  • @Eri-vi8je
    @Eri-vi8je 3 года назад +127

    8:00 for those who learn Japanese I need to say that Joey’s explanation of keigo is a bit wrong. We don’t really change the verb of a sentence depending on who exactly we’re talking to - to both the emperor and a boss we say these nuts omeshiagari kudasai (お召し上がりください). Also, I’d say otabe kudasai (お食べください) is grammatically correct but unnatural, I personally have never said it unless ironically and definitely not to my boss.
    So basically, while teineigo (丁寧語) is simply a polite way of saying stuff, kenjogo (謙譲語) and sonkeigo (尊敬語) convey respect for sb in particular. The difference between these two lies in who’s the subject of a sentence - ‘I’ the speaker or someone like the emperor/boss.
    To say ‘I read your email’ to a boss respectfully is to speak kenjogo, and the verb is gonna be 拝読する (ーした in the past tense). ‘Kenjo’ means modesty in Japanese, so by using the verb I’m lowering my position and therefore showing respect. Whereas if I’m just a third person saying ‘the boss read someone’s email’ (with the emphasis on respect for the boss), I use a ‘sonkeigo’ verb お読みになる (-なった).
    I know it’s fucking complicated!

    • @void_sum
      @void_sum 3 года назад +12

      I imagine Joey knows how to use keigo correctly, but for some reason when he's explaining some concepts to an audience he goes all over the place, like he's trying super hard to make people think "wow, Japanese is such a whacky weird language!" lol. If you want a lot more examples of this just look up his "Japanese class" stream (I think someone reuploaded it on RUclips), Joey just jumps from one thing to the next, and to the next, making things seem way worse than they actually are.

    @CptPatch 3 года назад +76

    N1 will have a lot of questions that FEEL really hard even for a native speaker, but because the passing mark is 55% I doubt any high school educated native speaker would have a hard time scraping by. You only need to do a little better than narrowing each question down to a 50/50. Coincidentally, this 55% passing mark is also why the test is kind of worthless as a language measure (it encourages memorizing a wide net of information rather than focusing on proficiency and fluency) and the Japanese government is (slowly) trying to reform testing to be more in line with European language testing standards... but the JLPT is the best that companies have so an N2 or N1 is still really useful if you're applying for visa work.

    • @RyuKatolikeseaweed

      It tests a lot of things a native wouldn't learn. I'm Japanese and I wouldn't know the differences between different types of keigo, I just kinda do it by instinct/what I know to be used in each scenario. I don't know what category of keigo I'm using; you never have to learn that in school. Most people learn it through family/on the job.
      The other stuff on the test should be easy for a native though, so a middle/high schooler should pass with no issues.

    The way Joey wrote 女 follows a generally accepted principle of writing in Japanese: left to right, top to bottom. It didn't come from a place of "I prefer this". Rather it came from following principles. For people interested in calligraphy, following the stroke order the way Joey explained (く then / then ー) allows for a fluid brush flourish. Otherwise, it's going to be a disjointed stroke (the way Joey originally wrote it in).

    I think doing this once every six months or once a year would be cool to see how much they improve.

    Fun fact related to the whole "Jesus" pronunciation thing.
    The name "Jesus" actually has the same root as the name "Joshua", this being the Hebrew name "Yeshua / Y'shua".
    The reason we have these two different names, is that "Jesus" went from Hebrew through Greek and Latin and into English; whereas "Joshua" had a more direct path.

    Please I want more of those episodes. It's super interesting when Joey explains where certain kanjis come from or how to remember them even though I am not even learning Japanese

    They need to do this once in a while to see how much they've improved and it's a good exercise for us as well!!

    From all 2 of my Chinese friends, they said that since the readings are different, Japanese is harder than Mandarin Chinese, for them at least.

    Joey honestly seems like the perfect person to practice Japanese with and they aren't making use of it which is a shame.

    Fun episode! It would be super entertaining to see what each person was drawing while they were struggling though! (You could use iPads to collect this maybe)
