Just a note... people saying this is not a "good gameplay" for 2024... well, it's an iGPU... integrated graphics... NO dGPU, 80-100W total package draw (CPU+GPU) and a 8c/16t for a better upgrade path. I myself stated in the conclusion that the 8700G needs to come down $50 IMO, but purely performance wise? APUs had an ENORMOUS step up with this series!

If it were cheaper itd be a tempting buy, but from an upgrade path perspective it doesn't support as many pcie lanes, so that is a bit of a concern 😅

    • @richardnpaul_mob
      @richardnpaul_mob 10 месяцев назад +8

It's a shame about the reduced cache which hampers FPS with discrete GPUs as the upgrade path makes less sense in that case (it's quite a big loss compared to say the 7700). HWU covered other options which cost the same but give far better gaming performance.
Strix point is going to ramp up all of these results even higher later in the year so I'll look forward to your coverage of that 😊

Think of it as a 5800x and an RX 6500. Also when you are done and ready to buy that 7950x3d and 4090 you can put the 8700G into your HTPC where it will be GREAT!
I bought a 5700G in jan 2022. Cheapest 8-core available and I wanted to be a part of history (first 60 fps 1080p APU). I bought a 3070 TI for the same system! Now the 8700G is making history as a 90 fps 1080p APU - I'm glad that SOMEBODY understands what a big deal these iGPUs are!!! Get the best of both worlds with an AMD+NVidia system!!

AMD has launched a good mobile APU, the most efficient APU for light portable game consoles and the first alternative to Apple Silicon's M2 Pro and M3. One of the best options to actually buy on x86 architecture. Not the joke that Meteor Lake represents if you compare the 40 years x86 development of cpus over the 3rd iteration on a custom ARM System on a Chip (Apples haas used intel, amd, ibm, risc, motorola and many custom chips over the years also). But is AMD's fault to launch a power hungry beast instead of the first APu in years capable of running without fans on a desktop or with only 2 fans (psu and the apu one) at max. Very welcome to see 260W capable silicon, but any 5500 + rx 6600 is faster and cheaper, and 5600G/5700G sare twice more efficient at stock settings... the unbalance between cpu and gpu is laughable when you realize is just little more than 5700 (the G without gpu) + rx 6400 refresh on 4nm... binning silicon is a thing but marketing overhype to justify expensive price... is cheaper than a mac mini, but it's not better overall, it trades blows sometimes but not the best apu on earth at all, better sometimes, maybe... it's just a seemengly desperate try to sell silicon not capable of Z1 Extreme and 7x4x mobile models, instead of a humble and honest desktop new line-up...

Zen 3 5500 + rx 6400 is faster, better cheaper and can be tuned to similar stock TDP (not lower to ZEn4 Phoenix levels) or rx6000 (if playing is a thing and you want double the FPS). Back in the day, when integrated gpus came in the motherboard, not the cpu, you couldn't run fck all with it. they were useless. A 2005 igpu performed like a 1996 GPU. and that was a massive gap that made them useless for anything but "retro gaming". Nowadays you can run basically anything on an Igpu, even if you have to compromise somewhat. The "year gap" in performance remains the same, more or less, but now that doesn't matter much because 10 year old gpus are still usable. That's pretty cool.

There not problem with games. There a problem with cost. APU at Ryzen 2000-5000 series has a strong point - waiting without videocard for end of mining boom. But now this gone - there is a plenty of videocards on sale. Other point of APU - using for menial task without discrete videocard - also gone - we have Ryzen 7000-series with iGPU that not so good but still usable for menial task and this CPU have normal PCIE lines and cash so better for future upgrade.
The point for media PC also now charged by Ryzen APU 5000-series on am4 platform - they not so fast but still good and far more cheaper then Ryzen 8000-APU on am5. So older APU compete on this side better.

I bought this APU used for 50€ less than retail price (also saved 40€ on motherboard, 30€ on RAM and 15€ on cpu cooler - all bought used). Enabled PBO, decreased CPU boost limit to 4.9GHz ( and undervolted to CO -30. GPU boost limit increased to max (+200MHz), undervolted to CO -12. 6200MHz RAM (because cheap and low profile).
Cooled by Noctua NF-L12S, this thing doesn't hit its 85°C thermal limit in gaming, while staying almost inaudible - and that's before delid, which I will do as soon as I have delid-die mate.
Forza Horizon 5 on FullHD/High doesn't drop below 60fps (I will not be using this PC with any 120+Hz capable device) and is actually playable on 4K high with CAS on balanced (50fps+ avg). This is better than what I was getting from i7 4770K + R9 290 on the previous machine (secondary setup).
Idle power consumption of the entire machine is 20W, which is less than Ryzen 9 7900 in idle on its own (uncore power consumption of 7x00 Ryzen CPUs is stupidly high). It increases by only 10W while playing 4K video, so no need for active cooling even in as small of a format as SilverStone ML05 is.
A while ago I built a similar machine with 3400G (which was the best available APU at the time) and that one was not usable for any kind of gaming.

Insane! If it were affordable, I'd keep this as a backup gpu to play older titles in my backlog to save wattage instead of using my dedicated one. Is that even possible on a desktop?

thats a massive test sample great job testing the APU for us, thank you.
Yea totally agree the price point of the 8700G is too damn high.
SkatterBencher also did the job of finding the best OC for the APU.
While it nets 30+% with higher speed memory and manual tuning.
but the entry level GPU like the RX6600 curb stomps the 780M
whats worse is that both the 8600G and 8300G have fewer PCI-E lanes as some mentioned and both only have like X4 lanes for GPU which is yikes.

60 fps on AC in 1080p. Damn. APUs are going places. Can't wait to see what 2027/28 gen APUs bring to the table. It's been rumored that they will replace the low end GPUs

Can you give more ram to the igpu than 4 gb? Would it use more than 4 if you did? Genuine question

The system does that automatically if you have ram enough I believe

very surprising. Imagine, for a Living room PC. Playing games with your kids (I see playing with a CPU like this games like lego or others with my kids :D)

Is there any dedicated vram built in yet? Or is it all shared?
If thats the case, that would be the next step we see these APUs have built in dedicated vram memory...imagine push in performance
