Fran is the type of woman you want to be around children who have lost their mother. She never intended to replace their mother, in fact, she was the one who mentioned the importance of keeping her legacy alive. She saw herself as their adoptive mother, but knew that Sara was an important part of their lives and that’s a beautiful thing. You should never try to replace a loved one of someone who is deceased, because to be honest, you can’t. You should always honor them and strive to be the person they would have wanted for their living loved ones.

She’s great, just great. She didn’t replace their mom, but she was the mother figure that they needed. A friend to confide in, who cares for them and loves them. They loved her. And she loved them. That’s what eased Maxwells mind about Fran I think. He didn’t want to jump in a relationship to risk it not working out and hurting the kids, but it’s so clear whatever would happen between them Fran would always be there for his kids because she loved them. In a big way she thought of them as hers too. And that’s what drove the force IMO. If you’re dating someone who loves your kids and your kids love that person it’s always a good sign. If it’s the other way around it’s a big red flag

@@KoolKukumber yeah! I understood why Mr. Sheffield didn’t want to rush a relationship with Fran, I just got a little irritated with the double standard of him constantly meddling within her personal affairs when she decided to date after he told her he loved her and took it back (meanwhile, having his own little flings), and him pushing her away then reeling her back by doing small bits and pieces.
Fran was just a lovely woman tho. She adopted them the moment she walked through that door ❤️

This episode proved that Fran was great addition to the Sheffield family. I loved it when Maggie told her grandparents that whenever they missed their Mom, Fran would put in old video tapes of her and would watch them. Then Brighton told them about the Jewish tradition of lighting a yahrzeit candle to honor Sara's memory on her birthday. So Fran pretty much made sure that Maxwell and the kids would never forget Sara's memory. That's a class act right there!

To me this episode has always proved the Sheffield kids are really Fines because they never seemed to have much of a relationship with their grandparents on either side. I really love how this show handles past relationships. It's made clear from the beginning that Fran is no stranger to past relationships, she's open about her past boyfriends and comfortable in her own skin and past sexual exploits. The fact that she's experienced in romance and sex is never viewed as a character flaw or something that Fran and Maxwell need to overcome as a couple, it's just a part of her life and past.
On the other hand, Maxwell's past relationship, and the fact that he has children from his past relationship, are never seen as something negative about him, either, neither is the fact that he clearly still loves his deceased wife. Throughout the show he's shown struggling with getting over his late wife and having difficulty opening up both emotionally and sexually because he's still not over her. He's never treated like less of a man or less desirable because of his lack of sexual experience, sex drive or because of his lingering emotional connection toward his wife. Instead he's given the respect and time he needs to overcome this lingering connection in a way that's respectful to his emotions, his sexual reservations and the memory of his late wife. Because Fran is comfortable in herself, she doesn't feel insecure about this or the kids and they're able to form a relationship that includes his past life and wife in a way that's mature, kind and respectful.
It's a really mature and progressive way to view relationships and past relationships that is a breath of fresh air now, let alone nearly 20 years ago when the show originally aired. Just another reason why this show has aged like fine wine.
