Abandoned Terex 82-40 Dozer Startup Attempt + Bonus Terex S7 Scraper Cold Start

- The old Terex 82-40 Dozer worked at the Heaphy coal mine for many years, it was replaced by a more modern Cat D9 16 years ago.
It hasn't run since it was parked up all those years ago, we tried to get it started at the mine but burned out the starter motor, so it was pulled on to a transporter and taken back to the workshop.
We now have a new starter motor so will attempt to fire it up one more time, If we can't get it running this time, the engine will be lifted out, stripped down and reconditioned.

Sounds fine
@@georgedavidson1221 Dirk You're a bloody Legend mate, all the way from the US og NZ
Hello Dirk
Dirk - I'm from US and my English is not as good as your's.
Heyyyyy Dirk Diggler …..porn star 🤘
No bragging, no boasting, no trash talking, just soft spoken fellas who really know what they're doing. Solid gold.
Those old Detroit diesels have such a distinctive sound.
The best engines... i used to work on the 6 Cylinder ones with super chargers on them. When i was in the Navy. Including 4 & 3 cylinder engine's
What a machine. Thanks Marty, love your line at the end, it shows your enthusiasm for fixing things and ours!
Old mate: “If you’re ever in the area...we’ll wait for ya”
Marty: “I’ll come over any day”
I was wondering what happened to this group of guys and the dozer. Thanks for the update! Love to see some videos of the engine restoration, but I know it's a pretty good drive for you and you are plenty busy on your own place.
Bummer, but pulling it is the right choice. Better to work a bit more than completely munch it. Curious to see a future update on what the engine's deal was.
Also, cool scraper. Been a while and a bit since i've seen an open cab one. Sounds and works great.
Nothing warms my cold, cold heart, like seeing people save good machinery from the scrapheap.
Absolutely old fashioned craftsmanship , you guys are the mechanics of days gone by. , just brilliant !!!
Marty, this brings back old memories for me. I worked with Cat branded equipment mostly but seeing these Terex vehicles being worked on is a good feeling. Thanks for sharing this. Regards, Bert
That scraper brings back some memories. I ran an old Euclid S7 scraper just like that back in the early 70's.
Love to see that machine get sorted and get back to pushing dirt around .
Your channel is inspirational. Thank you for sharing a piece of your life with the rest of us
Marty, thank you for these videos. So many of us dream of doing a great project but don't have the means. Videos like this keep our dreams alive.
The scraper is cool , it's like something out of Mad max 😁👍
on a similar note I thought of Thunderbirds
I like your pronunciation of Terex as T-Rex. Very appropriate for that old dinosaur!
Hi Marty, glad to hear the guy wants to take out the motor and rebuild it. Are you going to keep us updated on how it's going? Thank you for showing this video. Always looking forward to your next video.
Yes I hope to film the process
@@MartyT We all watch you and are amazed with what you can fix and revive, i bet these old timers are pretty good at this game too!!
@@MartyT I'd urge that you give the guys a small push to make their own channel if they haven't already, that would make for some good content.
@@fernandoqueirozpopovic7024 im a kiwi bloke........., i could translate!
Hi Marty , like your videos , John is a great guy , so many stories about the old family earthmoving days . I have two 8240 dozers , one older one from the north island I’m currently doing some work on , my pet machine ! And one newer one similar to John’s one in your video , ex golden bay cement works , she’s had a hard life , I saved her from scrap . Also a ts 14 scraper from 1964 , gosh still learning to drive it , the capabilities are impressive with this machine . Those green machines were made tough to be still around after 50 + years ! All the best
Tim
New Zealand and New Zealanders remind me of America back in the 70s, when people and equipment were both reliable. Marty your channel has over 110 MILLION views! That's proof in the pudding right there. That dozer is absolutely huge! Dang shame it seized! I was so hoping it would just start right up.
NZ was (and often still is) a place where you had to wait for spare parts to arrive on a ship from the US (if you were lucky) or the other side of the planet if it was UK/EU gear. Pre-internet, it could take months just to order and pay.
Needless to say, NZers got very very good at fixing things on the go.
@@nicbrownable such an awesome reply!! Thank you so much!!
"Plenty of experts out there." It is a shame that the actual experts get silenced by the ones that think they know it all because they graduated from RUclips University. Love your videos. Love the old iron. makes me wish I had the time and money to restore some myself.
There's a lot of chaff in the RUclips comments, sure, but stay humble because there's also kernels of wheat too.
I actually learn a lot from the comments on my vids, there are some very clever people following my channel
You'll find there is always plenty of armchair generals/quarterbacks out there that think they know it all. The job is recognizing which are the real experts.

Just for reference mate,
I'm one of the dumb ones😉😆
Shush I'm a YT PHD
You are getting a collection going on your property Marty T, hope this is useful for you in road maintenance and keep up the great videos and be safe, love to your wife and kids. They make a good video with them in it.
This one is not mine, they are going to restore it and put it back to work, I'm hoping to document the process
These are coal mine old heads collaborating with lord marty :) I would love to hear their diesel war stories.
@@MartyT Yes, but if you could find one, it would make for a very interesting family vehicle. It would go well with the rest of your fleet. In a few years' time the boy might be asking to borrow the car, and you could always just tell him to use the scraper. Weren't they made with gearing that allowed them to make a decent speed?
I just love the old machines! Thank you for sharing!
And these guys are showing us that just because it's old doesn't mean it ain't still got life in it.
Hats off to the blokes that can sit beside a two stroke for days on end. I know I would never do it.
Keep up the great videos, like your work
I have been wondering what had happened to the old Terex. Good to see the scrapper there as well. Noice!
the old guys in the coveralls are back time to get into my coveralls and open the toolbox up
Love watching these old machines that don't need a computer or licence agreement to work!
As a 17 year old kid I ran a twin engined TS24 one summer. 8V71 in front and 6 71 in back. God the noise was horrific.
Marty the iron archaeologist at it again
Hi Marty from Regina, Saskatchewan ,Canada .hope you and the family are having a good day.take care,eh
Love the fact these were designed with slide rules and pen and paper. Took some real sharp minds and knowledge to make them tick.
It's amazing anything ever happened before computers and the birth of your good self ay!
Love those old machines. So cool! Thanks for sharing, those engines sound so good! 👌
Great episode and the sound of a Detroit. Sweet!
The ol 82-40 would make a helluva mooring block/ fish home...,,👍
Always the sign of a well set up Detroit! No smoke. Remember driving a TS14 many moons ago. Lovely engines.
“…give it a kick in the guts…” We’ve always used that expression here in Australia ; good to hear it used here by Marty. Can’t say I’ve really noticed it being used on any of the US channels I follow.
LOVE these repair videos! Keep up the awesome work. Thanks.
Thank you for the update, I'd love to see more on the Terex.
Love the Terex equipment, very cool. Looking forward to seeing more on this. Gotta love the green.
Knowing how to not make things worse is a skill too.
Very true
Great stuff Marty! Thanks for the update!
What a great bunch of blokes Marty 👍
Great to see them old folks working on them machines like nothing is a problem 👍
Love hearing good keen men tackling something. Perfect choice of words…haha
Brilliant, I feel that I can now get out of bed and get ready for my day!
Good stuff, we now have two for one to look forward to, keep up the good work Marty
I spent a lot of time working on/rebuilding 8V71's when I did my apprenticeship (Terex TS 24's had two of them, one each end) and they're pretty simple to work on, they're two stoke and have dry liners...but there's a few finicky things about them as well, hopefully the guys know what they're doing
Terex 82-40 not Turning over but Terex S7 starting and driving - we hope that the 82-40 can be fixed - would be so nice to see the old Girl running again ! Nice Video and many Cheers from us in Australia !!!!
Saint Marty, protector of old machinery.
The s7 looks to be a honest day of work. No smooth ride there. Ty marty for a peak of old iron.👏👍.
Just think of the driveway if Marty gets to use that scraper for a couple of days. Love the stuff you put up keep it goong
My kind of people there. I have an 8V71T out back that I just got up and running last week. What an absolute beast of an engine! Those old timers look like they know what they are doing, so I expect that one will be back 100% correct when they get done with it. People that really know the old Detroits are getting harder to find, so my only advice is to soak up any knowledge that you can from them. Thanks for keeping us up to date on this, btw.
I was with you on pulling the injectors and lubing the pistons to try to start it. It won't hurt anything. To rebuild it you would replace the pistons and liners anyway.
Those Detroit engines are hard to beat!!
You're been accepted into the old boys club. Well done
Marty great video as always, I have operated a lot of Terex machines over the years most all were fine machines and heavy built I liked them .
good to see marty old iron people workin on gettin it going again good luck with it cheers
Your country is stunning, love it. 👍👍🇬🇧
I really enjoy your videos, keep up the great work. Hope you and the family are good, considering all the rain that's been pouring down.
old iron that built our country. Really enjoy your videos mate. I used to work up the Lee Valley at the old cement works. but we were coking coal for the steel works
You always are the best . What you did was awesome.
Some Beautiful old Machines right there.
Wow that's awesome to see. Thanks for the awesome video!
Love you’re vids mate as I’ve said before I’d love to have this life in my future. All the best
It's a shame that dozer wouldn't go, but that Terex S7 was amazing! Terex scrapers were and are very popular here in Canada - especially the dual motored ones. I loved working on sites where they were present and hearing TWO of those old Detroits screaming as they dragged dirt. It was so fun, loud and amazing with a good operator to see.
One site I watched at two Cat scrapers doing their jobs with a D7 shoving them behind as they filled. Then an angry sounding, twin engined Terex in that unmistakable green probably dating from the early 70's fired up all smoke and anger.
The operator was a serious pro and had worked that particular machine for over THREE decades. He'd start his run with one Detroit screaming and then you'd grin and FEEL the second engine roar to life amd just muscle the dirt away. No pushes needed. It was a good day :-)
Seeing professionals who love their heavy machines operate them like surgeons is always a thing of beauty to witness. Watching them use them to make the earth shake and the air shriek is just bloody fun.
Hearing that S7 Marty brough back some good memories for me and seeing that familiar green steel drive around made me smile. I hope they get that dozer going. Terex dozers are rare beasts, but hardy ones.
Thank you for this. I love seeing the familiarity and difference between Canada and New Zealand in what was run and how different we both are from Americans - not nearly as many JCB's down there.
My fave is still your little Bristol dozer. Nothing here like it. I'd love to run it. It's a dandy litle popping machine.
Thank you and pmease take care mate.

I remember the first video. Good to have an update.
ETA then engine on the S7 runs really sweet - no clouds of smoke under load either.
Ha! You guys said exactly the same as I was typing.
goosebumps from that S7 sound , woww
Thanks again for the video
The last video about this was 8 months ago so a had to watch it again to refresh my memory.
Another great video.
Sheesh Marty! Youre spoiling us recently
Awesome video Marty. I’m looking forward to watching you do the timing chain on that Audi. 👍👍
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting. First time I've seen track pads break off and crack.
I suspect from pushing it on the transporter with the excavator
Terex produced some great scrapers especially the double engine ones, during the mid 80’s I’ve watches a construction company who had 8 or so of those double engine ones creating a man made lagoon and those were scraping 24 inches (61 centimeters) each pass with push pull configuration of 3 at a time.
that's to bad like the old equipment one started runs sounds great thanks for the video sir Marty
Great to hear old trade people talking about their things ,
That is a sweet little scraper! Best and quietest Whizzer that I've heard. Clean it and give it a coat of Frog Green. Will look for updates on V-8.
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼……………………………aaaaaahhhhhhhhh, key board experts, got to love them!! Most have never turned a wrench, but they saw a video once!!!
Hi Marty , The definition of an expert is X is an unknown factor , and A spurt is a drip under pressure LOL Love your videos keep up the good work Cliff from over the ditch at Logan city Queensland Australia from the big island
Yay i was wondering if we'd get to see some more on this ol beast.... Cheers.
If those other mechanics weren’t there, Marty would have that thing going by now.
Exactly what I was thinking.
....lookin' good, keep safe..
Great video 👍 Messing about with old iron sure old Jaypaydirt would approve of old scraper.
Great that you are able to bring your video skills to help them document. Bet you learn heaps of tricks from the old blokes :-) Jim Bell (Australia)
Yes I always learn something hanging out with these guys
Nice update.
so good, so kiwi, love it
I love to see Euclid or Terex on a piece of equipment, because it is almost always a Detroit Diesel 2-stroke powered unit. Thanks for the video.
Victor, being it may be A Detroit Diesel, I'm sure they hate working on it cause the bolts are probably SAE and not Metric !
Good ole American made!
@@JohnSmith-tv5ep I'd be willing to bet these dudes still bemoan the move to metric even though it happened in NZ nearly 60 years ago. You gotta realise these fellers will have grown up with predominantly English and American cars, they'd be more versed in imperial stuff than metric, I'd bet.
Boa tarde Marty muito ótimo esse serviço maquina meu amigo
Boas Brazil
Great stuff Marty ;) and cool machinery. Oh regarding the Audi Allroad, has been good to you looks like
Cheers to you. ...
Glad the guys are looking deeper into the engine...pouring oil in or trying to start it will damage it more or beyond repairing.... you have to dig deeper into anything to fix it properly... if you actually plan to use it? Any engine can start if you force it to fire up...knowing when that is a bad choice is from experience ... i think these guys ( or the one guy ? ) was a retired mechanic? i watched the original episode...was it a year ago?? lol...time flies.... I cringe watching some of these " Will it Start " RUclips video's... i been working on vehicles 50 plus years mostly my own ( 2 to 18 Wheels Gas & Diesel ) and have started many that sat years and don't know everything ( i know alot though..lol )... was so refreshing to hear someone make the right decision... Now that is a sign of an Expert...imho
thanks marty.
This is gonna be a great day....Because it starts with Mr T :)
Lovely to see how the old digger was getting on shame it doesn't look so good on the engine front 🤞. Always like to see the blokes with their skills and vehicle fleet, the TEREX was a real bonus. Not sure of the chronology, but hope things are better on the weather/flooding situation
Great video! Thank You Very Much for this video of Awesome machines! Please keep up the Great work! GOD' Bless all of you. Amen :) :)

Can't wait to see the day they rip it out! That'll be a treat
