- The old Terex 82-40 Dozer worked at the Heaphy coal mine for many years, it was replaced by a more modern Cat D9 15 years ago.
It hasn't run since it was parked up all those years ago so we are going to try and get it running, load it on a transporter take it back to the workshop where it will be restored by local heavy machine experts Browny, John and Bob.
I went along for the day to film the adventure.

When you see an old bloke in a boiler suit you know shit is about to get done. When you see two old blokes in boiler suits you know shit is about to get done….only slower….🤣
Ohh yeahhh...
West Coasters are a legend and a race apart.
hahaha :D
You missed the cup of tea in hand. Much deliberation to ensue.
Same all over the world.
I never appreciated helping my grandfather fix stuff on his boat like I should have... Especially when one of his friends came around, because then it turned into two old guys standing aorund watching me work, cracking jokes at my expense
Looking back now, I miss those times like hell. Old man would have loved Marty's videos
I would rather watch these old boys smoking cigs and messing with heavy metal than watch any sport. These are the real men and we need more blokes like this.
You always have the coolest videos. Im disabled in a wheelchair and can honestly say I appreciate what you do. Although I'm not actually there its the next best thing. Thanks for posting as I really enjoy watching
Thanks mate, glad you find my vids interesting
Marty can turn that wheelchair into a lawn mower.
@@scania1982 LOL
As a former diesel mechanic now also in a wheelchair these videos are a great elixir. I don't miss extracting seized bolts though.
I'll add my voice here as a fellow disabled guy, though not in a wheelchair (yet). Marty's vids are some of the best on RUclips for old wrenchers like me to live vicariously through. Keep 'em coming, Marty. Respect from New Hampshire, USA.
I've always been interested in equipment even from a very young age. My dad was a farmer and I grew up driving and working on everything you can think of. Right out of High School I went to work in the shop for a farm tractor dealership. Thanks again for taking me back to my youth. Looking forward to seeing more on this project. Have yourself a great week ahead.
Who else thought Marty had bought a 40 ton dozer and just didn't want to tell his wife yet L.O.L. Thanks for sharing, I hope we do get to see more of this project when they do move it and get it running/restore it. Take care everybody involved in this one.
I figured the tracks around the farm were fixing to get a bit wider lol.
EXACTLY
I was hoping he has. Been interesting to see him get it going himself. One thing about having a dozer is whatever you own is never big enough. At least in my experience...
Glad to hear grunting sounds while mechanicking is universal worldwide! 👍
Watching that starter motor go in reminded me why I stopped working on big diesels lol.
I hope some kids today are actually excited about this stuff, else the likes of people with your skills will be a dying breed. Fascinating how, over time, the bits and bobs of learning culminate into being able to confidently fix these old beasts. What a pleasure to watch you guys work.
my 18-year-old grandson is going to lincoln tec. in Nashville TN., he has a passion to work on heavy equipment.
When you're as "seasoned" as these guys are, you're just having a good time.
Damn, Marty, the scenery all by itself is worthy of a video.
Ah the old “can’t be stuck if it’s liquid” solution to stuck bolts. Interesting project, hope we do get to see updates.
Dejavu at 6:00 with the sound of the West coast water ... unmistakable sound ... :-) Looks like an old bugga's day out ... come to think of it ... to get one of these old beasts going you would have to be a determined old bugga anyway ... good on ya's all ...
If Marty is going to learn a thing or two I wanna be there.
I’m sitting here on a cold evening in the UK feeling as sick as a dog waiting for covid test result to come back - your video is the perfect tonic Marty!
So was it covid Pete?
Just look at that gorgeous Euclid / Terex green proudly peeking through that hideous yellow paint!
Thankyou you Marty for taking us along with you on this great journey.......
Love those old 8V-71 Detroits. I used to commute daily on an inland water ferry boat that was powered by one. Can't mistake that sound, even through the fog!
Summed up by this video
Spanner: Please come loose
Breaker bar: I wasn't asking
Breaker bar + leverage pipe: You should've listened
Torch: Can't be stuck when you're melted
The missus must have made you pinky swear to not come back to the house with another vehicle before letting you go on this mission. 😂
I remember seeing jumper cables jump like that on a big boat engine. It was amazing! Love the videos!
Old Terex with a V8 Detroit 2 stroke is pretty cool, but nothing beats an old CAT. Long time ago (before camera phones) me and some mates started and drove a CAT D9 that had been sitting longer than we'd all been alive. All we had to do was check the oil, clean the points on the pony motor, add gas, and that old dinosaur started right up like it was parked yesterday on what we could only assume was 30+ year old diesel fuel. That was a fun day.
Loved the dummy starter motor for manually rolling the engine over. Will have to remember that one.
I'm glad you and the guy's are going to this old girl up and running . I know you could have done this solo but it looks like a colossal job . Thanks for sharing this adventure.
You know the jumper cables are moving more current than they probably should be when they dance around on their own. Lol
I agree with J Mac if the injectors aren't stuck it will be great!! All the best from Canada
Awsome job Marty, love watching old iron get resurrected. Looking forward to seeing more on this one if possible.. cheers buddy 🍻👍
You know your pulling some current when the jumpers cable are twitching!
There a big monster of a Dozer. I operated a smaller Terex about the size of a D-7. Cant hear now. Because of those old Screaming Detriots...But they were good Engines...Great Video...
Seasoned, industrious ol' cobbers always have the knowledge! Love it! My Dad's the same, loves to tinker. Fantastic work!
Very awesome that these fellers are out doing stuff like they were teenagers working on a hot-rod. Yes, it would be just fine to see the progress on that beast. Damn fine indeed!
Hope to see more, always enjoy watching old iron brought back to life. Thanks
I can hear the smile come over your face when you say “what a monster” grinning from ear to ear……lucky bugger👍👍👍
Thanks again Marty have a great day.
Oh to be sitting in a pub with these gents over a good pint (or two) and just absorb the stories and knowledge from their lives.
Great video, Marty!!!
Shit I’d rather hang with them at the job site
LOL love the fella with the rolly hang out his mouth all day .... unreal these guys dedication to getting an ol dozer going good work Marty .... from across the ditch :)
Thank you, nice video and great project! Ron USA
When I read the title I thought whoa now he's taking home a 40 tonner......haha.
Hearing those old buggers saying "woo" as opposed to "whoa" to indicate the other person should slow or stop, that made me nostalgic for my childhood down south. Haven't heard accents like that for years lol
Ahh. Reminds me of the good old days in mining. No set rules for hard hats, gloves, safety glasses etc - just common sense.
No stupid arse hours of risk analysis crap paperwork that made you sleepy and signed off on like a robot - just common sense. Those Kiwi boys will sort it beautifully. Keep us posted if you can please Marty
Agree, the nanny state has gone too far, I survived 60 years working
in earthmoving, blasting, quarrying and deepsea trawling with only
a crook back from too much bouncing on heavy equipment.
Great film. Brings back memories to see men working with a cigarette dangling. Love it.
For moment, I thought you were getting it to your farm. The Lady of the house really woud'nt approve this time ! 🤣🤣🤣
Cheers to those old fellows swinging the sledge hammers!
@ 03:35 That was the most satisfying 'anti-seizing' sound I've heard in a long time...
Wow! Bunch of older experienced guys working under that thing...my back aches just watching you guys down on the ground! Those Aussies are tough people!!!
I grew up about one mile from the Euclid plant and 45 minutes from the Terex plant. Knew a lot of kids in high school whose Dads worked in those plants. Loved driving down E222nd St and seeing all the equipment sitting on the corner of 222 and St Clair. At least Lincoln Electric is still there providing jobs for families.
How wonderfully Kiwi - get to the job and start by having a cuppa and a scone the missus packed; she's pleased to get him out from under her feet for the day!
That guy was well knackered lifting that starter motor up.
This is great. Good work.
Cheers from Texas! Really enjoy your channel.
Sweet Mother McGree... this is a playlist in the making!
Man, Marty T. What a view. Love it. Lucky Sir
They should have pulled the valve covers off and made sure the fuel rack was not stuck before trying to start it. Those old Detroit Diesels were known to go into run away if there was a stuck injector which caused the rack to be in a wide-open throttle position. Hopefully the guys at the shop will know to check that before they try to start it again. Thanks for the video!
Dear goptools.
👍👌👏 Exactly! But not only that, each injector has to be checked too. Sometimes they got stuck but are mostly relatively easy to free up.
2) Hope I did hear wrong but I think that I've heard someone mention ether = starting fluid. That's a no go for Diesel engines, especially old ones.
Best regards, luck and health.
goptools exactly right the fuel system on a 2 stroke driptroits are nothing like a 4 stroke diesel I drove a few trucks with the old green leakers 53 series and 71 series back in the 70s and 80s
Absolutely ! ! !. Hope they read your post......
Yes they checked injectors, valves etc on the first visit, I wasn't there to film it
I get the impression that this isn't their first rodeo.
Great look at history and my hats off to those men who have the desire to keep it real for the next generation!
.YOUR TOYS ARE GETTING BIGGER..LOL...GOOD ONE...
Nothing better than watching a couple of old guys in boiler suits working on a piece of heavy iron on the side of a mining trail. You know that shit is about to get serious. These two characters probably know more about these heavy dozers than most of us noobs have forgot. Marty is a wise man to seek their knowledge and step back and watch and learn a thing or two. Besides: who enjoys laying under one of these monsters while it rains greasy dirt on you as you change out a starter motor????
I enjoyed listening to guys that know exactly what they're doing and have just the right accents to do it with.
And now I'm off to git some fuckin' ether!
Ok CG kl CG is oh by oh jjhl
JL CG h
Boy does that bring back memories of previous jobs 👍👍👍
Wow those fellas are some old pros...couple hundred years of experience if you totalled it all up I reckon... Anybody can rebuild it my money is on this crew! Cheers Mart👍
Thanks for posting I'm going through a breakup right now and your videos are helping me wish me luck that we get back together
Great video. I Enjoyed watching, Thank you.
Your paths and roads are about to become a LOT wider!
The reason this wouldn't start is because Marty was behind the camera! If he was working on the old girl, out of sheer RESPECT, she would have fired up!
No idea how you even begin to fix something like this. But learnt a lot from your videos.
Another fine beast for Marty to take in and get her going movin' dirt again.
Marty's vids are always facinating on how he goes about figuring out what's wrong and how to fix it.
That’s how they rope you in you know…Kit Kats 😂
Marty's Wife approves of this old rusty bulldozer content. (especially when she heard that this one is going to someone else's house) haha.
so great to see a very old machine get rescued and would so enjoy seeing it restored and working again.
Detroit's are some of the best sounding diesels ever made, so it is going to sound sweet when they get it running :) It's ironic that you posted this video this week, because I am considering saving a Detroit-powered excavator that has been around since I was a kid. Still need to make some decisions though. Anyway, I look forward to seeing progress on this beast ;)
These engines built the free world as we older ones know it. EPA was its doom (along with the USA)...We don"t breath the same air as China !!
I could imagine Marty dozing a new track down to power turbine in creek bed with this Terex.Bird song would be drowned out with screaming Detroit.:)
The engine turning on something that has been setting up, like this, is always pretty satisfying, to me, anyway. Not quite as good as starting it and getting it to move and steer, but it is a great start.
And a big thanks for taking us along bro, a real pity we could not hear the Detroit turning diesel into music but oh well. Safe travels down your way
I always welcome a time lapse road or trail sequence. Your country is so beautiful 😍
We used to drive by the old Terex heavy equipment plant in Hudson, OH when I was a kid. I remember thinking the static displays of bulldozers and giant dump trucks outside the plant were awesome. Sadly the only things remaining in Hudson are a road named Terex, and the buildings which are now the home of Joanne Fabrics. Not nearly as cool as a company that makes bulldozers and giant dump trucks.
Back in the 1970's, I saw a number Terex loaders and dump trucks on quarries and construction sites in the Arabian/Persian Gulf. I think the company specialized more on mining equipment and made some really big machines. We don't see this manufacturer around anymore, the last I heard was they were bought out by some other heavy equipment manufacturer. Terex design lines stand out beautifully - form and function - and you can tell its a Terex from a mile away.
That's sad to know, I visited that plant back in '80, for a bulldozer training course. Great memory..
1970. That's back when we actually built stuff in Ohio.
@@bige.3474 I remember the Terex guys showing us through the $25M Research and Development facility where they tested 1/4 scale models (in particular) Loadrunner scrapers, till a fault occurred. No engines, just hydraulic cylinders forcing on frame and bowl simulating stresses effected by a haul cycle... Dozer training was real interesting too...
My wife would beg to differ 🤣🤣🤣
I love seeing this old American steel coming back to life!!!
Thank you Marty. That is well worth the efforts. The tracks look as good as new.
I used to have two of those dozers. Although they seem big, they're actually around 29 tons without the ripper. Still have all the books if you need. Good luck.
Thankyou Marty happy holidays.
I live near Hudson Ohio and remember the Terex factory.
Marty, this one is a big one. I thought you went crazy haha, well more crazy and bought a TREX lol. My grandad was a Chief Mechanic in repairing those, this video brought me some good memories, hope you keep us updated, thank you
What a beautiful place you live in.
Thanks for sharing Marty! 👌🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Hi There. I owned and drove an 8240 for about 10 years. I had Start troubles with my one and I fixed it by putting another jumper lead between the drive platform and the main chassis. A matter of a faulty earth. They are great machines.
d9 monster to pull that out.. these videos are testiment to how well machinery was built to start run after 50,60,70+ years. legends boys that fix these
When old men swear it rolls off the tongue so well between words that youre at the end of the sentence before you pick up on it.
as an avid follower of Andrew Camarata apparently the algorithm decided I would enjoy your channel. I immediately subscribed. Good one!
Funny as it may sound, it makes this Yank happy that these skills aren't lost to time yet; love this channel for that and many other reasons. Thanks for taking the time to post this.
Thanks for watching mate
Cannot wait until the next installment of this story. I try to all your videos, and your self reliant aditude toward life. I also like that you are willingness to help others.
Good luck hope you can save it worked next to one some years ago . When it was working hard you could hear that GM engine miles away. Thanks for Video from UK
Marty's Vids are addicting. I'm retired and I can afford to watch him but if you're not retired it's advised that you use caution when watching them!
Nothing like an oversized rebuild, good stuff mate 👍
That is a cool old machine can't wait to see the progress
Thats a cool old beast Marty, looking forward to the next vid!
I look forward to all your videos! Very informative
Good to see the old guard working on the old machinery.
I am amazed at the amount of equipment you have that is just abandoned
3:50am and clicked on Marty's new content.
Happy Sunday!
Some tough old boys there for sure 🤠
Great vedeo fellas looks like in Australia 😃👏👏 that oldest bulldozer never died cheers from Norway 🇳🇴
West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand.
A Big Boy to work on!!!!!!!! Those youngsters work on the Bull Dozer... Are you sure they have enough experience to work on this machine!!!! HOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!
Great video. My old man use to build 6 and 8 V-71 2 stroke Detroits back in the 70's. He's got some good stories about them. The power from the super and turbo charging was insane back in the day, he said when he would dyno the engines they would routinely spine the torque needle around twice, so over 2,000 lb./ft. And the sound, holy.... Man do they sound wicked!
I love to see old equipment like this getting pulled out of the weeds to be restored. I was only five when that Terex was built... I doubt the modern machines will have the same longevity (or character) that these do. Thanks for sharing with us, as always.
Modern machines will get parked up because they need a software update and the owner's subscription is expired. I wish I was joking.
@@deanwoodward8026 That's no joke... I have thought of that numerous times also.
