I would chose Hunter. He is a rough and tough man with a sound mind. I spent my time with the Seabees for 0ver 30 years as a mechanic/operator working on all equipment that Navy buys. I started working on a D9 in Thailand clearing the jungle for our battalion to build an airstrip for the Air Force during Vietnam war. Cat is the best.
In 1980 I was fresh out of 10 years with the Marines and landed a job in Telluride, Colo. While I wasn't an experienced equipment operator, a Marine can do pert near anything he puts his mind into. I spent the summer ripping and pushing boulders towards the rock crusher with this same model Cat D-8. It was a beast and beat the hell out of me.

The poly engine. You first started the pony, threw the decompressor lever on the CAT, engaged the pony to turn the CAT. You typically ran the pony until the manifold on the cat got warm to touch, then you threw the decompressor lever back, it would turn the Cat over and belch out black smoke and rumble to life! Poney's never failed, especially when the temp was below zero!
If only I could've bought one of these in Oregon trail, then I'd only have to worry about the diseases instead of broken parts and not hauling enough supplies, etc...
Hey fellas I’ve watched you pull out two dosers now. This is an old vid so don’t no if you would ever read these comments. Anyway from an old Canadian hard rock miner who moved heavy tracked drilling equipment underground I’d like you men to try out the miner way. Not sure if dimensions of a D8 but what you need to build is a large boiler plate skid. Example say ten feet wide by twenty feet long. On the corners weld gussets for 2” clevises. Chain the dozer on all four corners criss cross. Weld a lip on each end like a slay. Again hook up two ten foot cable slings or heavy chain criss crossed to the tow machine hitch point. Also for stability and straight tracking while towing weld two railway ties onto the bottom off the skid. Hardest part will be jacking up the dozer to push the skid under the tracks then winch or pull it completely onto skid. Chain it down. Hook up tow away. Canadian hard rock miner OUT!!!

Respect for understanding the meaning of _abandoned._ Some folks these days mistakenly believe just because something is sitting in an undeveloped area that it is "abandoned" which is not necessarily the case.
I believe the pony motor served two purposes ... one (obviously) was to start the engine. The second thing it did was, I'm pretty sure they had the same cooling system as the big diesel engine, so as the pony motor was running for a while, it would preheat the diesel engine, making it much easier to start. I remember being out with my Dad in the woods of Montana where he built logging roads. They'd run that pony motor for 15-20 minutes (IIRC) before trying to start the big engine. Worked pretty well for what it was.
The manual said at least 10 minutes, preferably 15 before you even tried to start it. Same thing with the hydraulic and transmission. I would start the equipment every morning a half hour before the beginning of the shift. These guys don't know what they are doing. They are just in a rush to hear it run and don't care about how much damage they do to it because it was free and junk when they got it.

I'm glad to see you get rewarded for your hard work and speculation. You guys are an inspiration for the few left who find value in quality built equipment.
The pull start Pony on my cable dozer works really swell. The way it's designed is to run the exhaust from the pony through components of the diesel motor to pre-heat the block. No glow plugs back then. Pretty good thinking for the 30's and 40's. P.s., the pony only like to run on old Champion plugs. Autolites and other new styles don't fire so well.
I'm totally going with Heavy D. Every time this dude has to "survive" he's surrounded by a million in gear to play with. With that kind of stuff survival does just turn into spending time with the legend. 🚁

I constantly see abandoned heavy equipment and wonder how hard it would be to get it going. My father worked for Caterpillar most of his life and I could drive bulldozer when I was twelve years old. Really enjoyed your video and seeing you get this thing going!
A lot of times it can be made to run without too much effort but the cost to get it in condition to do any amount of work is more than it's worth. That's not always the case of course.
Getting started is the easy part. The trailers and equipment are the main expense part. I haul heavy equipment and advice never loan your equipment out.
Err. Dozers are not abandoned. They are just left there as usually prospectors OWN THEM. They leave them on the plot of land they are working on to COME BACK TO. That is why stuff is Locked. Someone has a key. Using a winch with a hook to break the lock was = breaking in. Many Logging firms leave their equipment there because to truck it out is a "Pain". Just because YOU find it, does not make it YOURS. This is basically grand theft Auto's. The thing runs. That means someone OWNS IT. He probably did not move it because he knew he would have to repair the one track. Or because he is right beside a road he would bring up a flatbed and drive it on or drag it on. The motor was running fine. It is registered like a car...so somebody has the rights to that machine.
@BunzeeBear, did you not catch the beginning where he said he BOUGHT IT and now had to get it started to move it off the mountain?? Rewind and watch again, then comment! 🤦👵🇺🇸
With all the recovery work you do on old heavy equipment , not to mention the risk of breakdown of your own heavy equipment you should do like a lot of independent logging companies and get a hydraulic line repair/manufacture kit for onsite hydraulic line repairs. Essentially you just need the assorted fittings, a couple reels of different size pressure hose, and a crimping press tool. Then you have an on site 30 minute repair instead of a 2 hour run to town hoping to find a parts store open that makes hoses.

It has a master electrical switch to turn on as well or it won't get electrical current to the starter or anything else on the Dozer. You also have to close the throttle and then open it all the way on to open the fuel pump so it will engage as well and then put it to about 1/4-1/2 throttle till is starts and then shut it down to idle.
I would choose Heavy D Every time because he has the knowledge ability and resources when it comes to anything. If he doesn't know he finds out and is not shy to ask
You spin it over on De-Compression, with the throttle closed off, once oil pressure is full ,then flip lever to run(full compression and then crack the throttle on slightly,it will fire right up. I really thought you was going to drive that mug off the mountain. Like, This is going to be the hardest recovery of my life just drives off into the sunset 🤣
That place is pretty close to Roosevelt. My Dad and a bunch of friends for 15 years would hunt on the Res for cow elk for herd control I went one year it's amazingly gorgeous plus the Utah small town establishments were awesome!!!! Btw nice El Presidente reference whilst eating lunch.
Speak for yourself. I'm watching this with my son while rebuilding a snowblower carb and changing belts and fluids to get ready for next winter. Live life. Get out there. Make mistakes. Protect your family and friends. But Get Out In the Sun and own your time. Even just for a moment.
I just know there was a reason why I decided to put my BRO DOZER shirt on today because ya'll keep saying my name Dozer no thats not a Nickname. This video reminds me about 20 years ago my dad went 50 miles out in the talkeetna mountains to rescue a D8H it took them 3 years to drive it out multiple trips in with swamp buggies helicopters airplanes my dad literally set it on fire to get thawed out Because it had a pin walk out the track while he was trying to drive it out during the summer and it ended up stuck in a giant swamp as the olny way to get it out was was to come in during the Winter and driving across the swamp he built miles of road and would even sleep on the cat it had a open rops so he would wrap a tarp around the roll cage at night and lock it in 3rd gear to keep the torque converter hot came out a small creek named gold creek that dumps into the big su river then he loaded it on a train to haul it 70 miles to willow to unload it and bring it home and refresh it for the gold mine he worked for
I know a fellow who floated a sunken cat out of a lake in northern Alberta or Saskatchewan. Used barrels and filled em with air and got it on land and then drove it out in winter.
Jack knife Jim! He’s the most mellow, humble and he’s always the clutch guy. He always figures shit out while the rest of them are running around like crazies
Been a long time since I have seen or heard an old D8H run. Growing up in NW Colorado, my dad worked for a sand an grovel company that had one. An I remember them having to use the pony to start it. An it brought back good memories. An if I was in a situation where I had to team up with someone to survive or make it out of the mountains, Heavy D your the one I would take with me.
If I was stranded in the middle of nowhere, I could probably survive by myself for a good while. However, I would pick Diesel Dave only for the comedy factor. He is always full of positive humorous energy.
Man I would give anything to have these dudes knowledge to just stroll up on a abandoned bulldozer and get it running. I would be like "yep, it's a CAT cuz its yellow. I think"....😂

Just an FYI on pouring pails of Fluid without poking a hole ??? Pour it upside down !!! Instead of the pail funnel being closest to the tank fill hole ... Flip it 180 so the breather hole is closest to the tank fill hole !!! But don’t brake the pail breather hole ... It pours just as fast !!! Just need a good aim on hitting the hole !!!

I really thought you was going to drive that mug off the mountain. Like, This is going to be the hardest recovery of my life just drives off into the sunset 🤣
I'm digging this series, keep it up! Awesome content, would love to see what you do afterward, finish repairs? Auction?
Why do those old cats sound so awesome?!! Way better than the newer machines
Mechanical power
People care about the sound of construction equip.? I’d prefer it to be silent so that I can eat everyone around me.
Inline six cylinder engines with longer strokes in the older Cat dozers, that’s why they sound different.
These guys really live that life at 100% and I'm here sitting, damn
Speak for yourself. I'm watching this with my son while rebuilding a snowblower carb and changing belts and fluids to get ready for next winter.
Live life. Get out there. Make mistakes. Protect your family and friends.
But Get Out In the Sun and own your time. Even just for a moment.
I would have disassembled it and flown it out part by part. For the engine block, I'd get a local boy scout troop to carry it on a 40' long pallet.
I just know there was a reason why I decided to put my BRO DOZER shirt on today because ya'll keep saying my name Dozer no thats not a Nickname. This video reminds me about 20 years ago my dad went 50 miles out in the talkeetna mountains to rescue a D8H it took them 3 years to drive it out multiple trips in with swamp buggies helicopters airplanes my dad literally set it on fire to get thawed out Because it had a pin walk out the track while he was trying to drive it out during the summer and it ended up stuck in a giant swamp as the olny way to get it out was was to come in during the Winter and driving across the swamp he built miles of road and would even sleep on the cat it had a open rops so he would wrap a tarp around the roll cage at night and lock it in 3rd gear to keep the torque converter hot came out a small creek named gold creek that dumps into the big su river then he loaded it on a train to haul it 70 miles to willow to unload it and bring it home and refresh it for the gold mine he worked for
The big Sioux?
I know a fellow who floated a sunken cat out of a lake in northern Alberta or Saskatchewan. Used barrels and filled em with air and got it on land and then drove it out in winter.
Small town home style cooking... especially by the momma who created her own recipes on her menu. Can't beat it!
Id take the one and only heavy d because he’s smart and funny and he knows what he’s doin
If I'm surviving I'm taking Heavy D, dudes got determination we're getting out
same.
Plus he is loaded $$$$$$$$$$$$
I love the sound of them old 🐱. You won’t see newer stuff starting like that years from now!
Old disel dozers never die people like heavy d come and rescue them good luck heavy d love your vides😊
I would choose Heavy D... a problem solver, plus he brings snacks and beverages!
That my friend is a true “Cold Start”!
More like old start
More like old fart
Jack knife Jim! He’s the most mellow, humble and he’s always the clutch guy. He always figures shit out while the rest of them are running around like crazies
Been a long time since I have seen or heard an old D8H run. Growing up in NW Colorado, my dad worked for a sand an grovel company that had one. An I remember them having to use the pony to start it. An it brought back good memories.
An if I was in a situation where I had to team up with someone to survive or make it out of the mountains, Heavy D your the one I would take with me.
Whoever is your editor is killing it 🔥🔥
Thank you
BEST channel on RUclips. No doubt
It’s amazing how durable these big machines are. They are monsters😊
heavy d would definatley be the one to go with, if everything was dia he would still have a smile on his face, happiest man underpressure alive
Yes, the big boiiii stuff is going to come out and we're going to have some funnnn
And survival with Heavy D, once you get out he'll throw a huge party.
I was just recommended your channel. Man what a video i loved it. Can’t wait to see more.
Just started watching this HeavyD bloke and I am liking his style. Calling his boys out for being assholes ordering sirloin steak shows his class.
If I was stranded in the middle of nowhere, I could probably survive by myself for a good while. However, I would pick Diesel Dave only for the comedy factor. He is always full of positive humorous energy.
Agreed, besides, he is rather cute, he has one of those smiles, and his face lights up like sunshine, :)
I would deff pick Heavy D seems like a person that would never give up no matter the situation.
you dont become successful like him if you just give up when stuff gets tuff 💯
Mr too
Man I would give anything to have these dudes knowledge to just stroll up on a abandoned bulldozer and get it running. I would be like "yep, it's a CAT cuz its yellow. I think"....😂
lol
Great thing about mechanically injected diesels they only need fuel, air and rotation
This is the sickest channel man. Stoked on this. Cant believe this is free
This hurt me a little man. A d8h was a direct start motor. That key on the side was the master key not a pony motor key... still a good video
8:12 I don’t know why that’s so satisfying 😂😂

Do tell him I refer you...
Every time I see an old dozer I just think of the one from the movie Tremors that they ride out of town in
I think of kill dozer.
You got to love this. These Cat dozens built this country!
Hans Bc the duck outfit, Dave just bc we’d blow something up 😂
BTW, the flag in your pic is backwards, stars on the left.
@@motor2of7 I know I know I’ve gotten told this multiple times 😂 I’ll change it eventually
Heavy D of course. He's a cool cat with all the toys and maybe he'd let me fly his helicopter.
You know its going to be good when you get a notification from Heavy D 😂
Choosing diesel Dave knows how to have fun and seems like he’d be able to keep us alive.
I’m wondering what did they eventually do with his old bulldozer
Heavy D has the overall experience so he would be my choice.
Ok I
Out of the whole crew, if I was stranded and need to be saved or kept company, I’d choose heavy D. “This final drive, has done its final drive” was the best comment lmao
So it has a compression release to get the engine cranking free then you release it to fire up! I drove a 1964 B73 Mack truck for 22 years with a 220 Cummins 13 speed triplex with a over drive 4 speed browning! 3 sticks . Was a fun truck to drive!
