From Wikipedia: Blue Swede was a Swedish rock band from the early- to mid-1970s that succeeded with a few singles which were covers of other artists' material. The band was first formed in 1973, when Björn Skifs, a top vocalist in Sweden, was looking for a band to accompany him during his concerts. The band was originally called "Blåblus" (Swedish for "blue blouse", a pun on the word "blues") and featured Skifs singing the lead vocals. The band got their international breakthrough in 1974 with their cover of the 1969 B. J. Thomas song "Hooked on a Feeling". Released that same year on their album Hooked on a Feeling, Blue Swede's version was adapted from British pop eccentric Jonathan King, using his ooga-chaka ooga-chaka background on a version he had earlier recorded of the same song. "Hooked on a Feeling" was released in Sweden in May 1973 and in the United States in February 1974, and reached #1 for one week in the U.S. staying in the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 18 weeks. The R.I.A.A. granted gold disc status on 28 March 1974. The track also topped charts in Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
    Lyrics:
Hooked On A Feeling (M. James / EMI Music)
    Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga
    Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga
    Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga
    Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga
    Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga
    I can't stop this feeling
    Deep inside of me
    Girl, you just don't realize
    What you do to me
    When you hold me
    In your arms so tight
    You let me know
    Everything's all right
    I'm hooked on a feeling
    I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
    Lips as sweet as candy
Its taste is on my mind
    Girl, you got me thirsty
    For another cup of wine
Got a bug from you girl
But I don't need no cure
    I'll just stay addicted
    And hope I can endure
    All the good love
    When we're all alone
    Keep it up girl
    Yeah, you turn me on
    I'm hooked on a feeling
    I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
    All the good love
    When we're all alone
    Keep it up girl
    Yeah, you turn me on
    I'm hooked on a feeling
    I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
    I'm hooked on a feeling
    And I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
    I said I'm hooked on a feeling
    And I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
    I'm hooked on a feeling...

In Sweden they were known as Bjorn Skifs and Blablus, American executives either changed their name or made them change their name to Blue Swede because it was easier to pronounce. This song was #1 in 1973 in Sweden and released in the states in 74. They broke up in 75. Sad, but Bjorn Skifs has never stopped performing. His is still active.

Bjorn Skifs and Blablus is not a very US-friendly name, especially in the 1970's. And Blue Swede is a good pun based on the original name, which itself was a pun, and somewhat informative about the group. The name definitely fit in with the name of other groups at the time.

    • @Snowkobbie
      @Snowkobbie 3 года назад +4

Blue Swede had no idea that Hooked on a Feeling would be such a smash hit in the U.S. So when label executives called the band in Sweden - urging them to get on a plane and tour the States - they couldn't, because they were already fully booked with gigs in Sweden. :D
It just goes to show that the swedish music industry didn't have much experience with such matters before Blue Swede and ABBA. If they had been better prepared, Blue Swede might have made a bigger impression in the States.

Me too! I was just thinking how they don’t make music like this anymore. I mean there are some good songs that have been written in modern times but there was a certain magic in the 60’s & 70’s (and even the 80’s) that seems to have gotten lost in the modern era. About the time that black music went from Motown to Hip-Hop and Gangster Rap and boy bands became a thing. According to Ice Cube, who basically invented Hip-Hop and Gangster Rap, the CIA played a key role in the intentional degradation of society via the entertainment and music industry. They also imported hardcore narcotics into black neighborhoods to further facilitate the destruction of black communities. Now the CIA is going after our children by grooming and sexualizing them in public schools, children’s entertainment, and online.

Björn Skifs got such a good voice. This was a big thing at the time. Someone called Björn (the singer) and said: "you guys got to get over to the states, your song is a big hit here". But due to a planned local Swedish tour they turned it down. And when they finally went abroad it was kind of too late and the hype was already gone.

I always loved this song but never knew what the guys looked like nor that they were Swedes. What a cutie and a good voice. We just knew what we liked back then based on what they sounded like, not many music videos, sometimes you got to see them on TV or if you bought an album. Just like I didn't realize until recently that 16 year old British Steve Winwood was the singer of Gimme Some Loving and not some old black guy like I thought. I think it's great that this song is all of a sudden popular again due to the Guardians movie (which I just saw and really liked). The whole soundtrack was a trip down memory lane.

This is an eternally great song. I've seen many groups on TV when they first came out like the Beatles and I like a lot of great music of several genres of every decade 1950 to 2020 as I appreciate great songs that really move me. I even saw BJ Thomas live 10 years and he first sang Hooked on a Feeling in the late 1960s. When I saw Guardians of the Galaxy and the songs came on full volume instead of background volume, I was F*#K@N impressed. Guardians of the Galaxy is the only movie at the Theater that I saw more than once. I saw it four times and have a beer or two before the movie, because being a super music lover, for me this movie was an amazing party. I first heard all the songs back in the 1970s when they first came out. I bought the CD soundtrack for this movie. The Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack was the #1 selling music in Amazon for a few months. I was very impressed with all the songs and how well they fit into the movie it made it a lot better for an awesome experience.
