I also owned a red 1993 VTEC, just like the one tested in this retro review. Before I purchased it, I did a lot of research, and remember reading various reviews -- that were actually not stellar. Mostly I remember reviewers being critical of the appearance and "ugly" interior. I never understood those reviews. I always felt the exterior was beautiful and interior very comfortable and "futuristic". Just before buying the Prelude, I test drove a Ford Probe V6 (a competitor to the Prelude at the time) and thought it was just alright. Shortly thereafter I test drive the Prelude and ... to this day remember vividly how absolutely blown away I was. So beautiful, so fast, so mechanically precise. It made the Probe feel like an 80s Buick. I drove it for 13 years. In retrospect, it appears to me that this was one of the best cars of the 90s -- absolutely the best in its class. The reviewers were totally wrong about the car, which is a good lesson and a reminder to always test drive a vehicle before buying.
@Anita Ayon agreed. The one with the Mazda engine wasn’t as bad, but the prelude is still way ahead of it. My buddy had a vtec prelude and it was pretty dang quick in it’s day!
I test-drove a ‘92 Prelude Si. It was non VTEC, but it was still quick as crap. I could only imagine how fast the VTEC ‘Lude was. I ended up with a 5spd. Acura Vigor. Fun car and room for 5. That 5 cylinder was a screamer, too.
heck yeah. I was too young in '93 to have one new. But had 93 accord two door 5 speed coupe in 2002 in high school swap a H2.2 in tech school from an crashed 2001 prelude. them was ggod time. smokin fools hell smoked a bunch of small block chevys with that beast. back then that was saying some thing now it easy as shit to get anything on the Internet's.
+Joseph Rogers people would lose their minds and have a fit nowadays if they couldn't get their precious automatic. So sad. Even sadder is the fact that cars equipped with a manual are extremely hard to find and usually have to be special ordered. I worked for a dealer and the owner would not stock manuals in anything. Not even Mustang GTs.
+Joseph Rogers Adding to that subject, Oh the good ol' days. I recall seeing the sticker on a brand new Pontiac GTO back in 04. Pontiac wanted 900.00 for that 6-speed manual "option".
Wait a minute, Honda's top models right now only come in manual right now. The Civic Type R. Also the Si. Has Honda folded and decided to make them with autos? I hope not..
Wow that's as fast as a modern Civic SI... that's very impressive, I'm starting to understand people's obsession with 90s Hondas, they made some excellent performance cars.
I had a 1994 vtec 11 years ago and I would smoke the current si's at the time. So basically all of them since they've been just as slow for the last 15 years. The vtec in that thing hit super hard (for what it was) I've always been a v8 guy but damn that prelude was something else. I was 21 when I had it so I freaking loved it.
I had a 94 VTEC, dark green with tan leather interior. It was an awesome car! I foolishly traded it in on a brand-new at the time, 2003 350Z. Regretted it like a month later. The Prelude was more fun to drive, more comfortable and had a much nicer interior (except for glare off that flat dash). Take care of your Prelude, it is a rare car these days. Congrats on snagging that little gem of a car!
+hammer_martel I certainly will. I enjoy my 20 minute commute to work on winding back roads. Brings me back to that time in my life when I dreamt of owning one. Mine is black on black.
I had a '93 Prelude VTEC that I got at age 18 (it was used). I liked it better than the 6sp BMW 330i with performance pack I would own several years later.
I did the same with my 92 base prelude. But, traded into an s2000. Don't regret the s2000 because i still have it after 13 years. Want to get a prelude again, though.
My first Honda was a '95 Prelude VTEC. Why I ever sold that car I have no idea. Still my favorite Honda/Acura followed closely by the RSX-S and S2000. Man Honda really knew how to make simple and fun cars.
I had a 94 S model only 133hp (vtec had 197) was under powered but with 17" rims and low profile tires man was it fun to drive, could take corners like nothing else I've ever driven
Those cars were so cool back then. I loved my '85 2.0si.. That thing was an indestructible tank, and cornered great. Sold it with 160k miles, and it still ran great.
Brings back memories. In '99, I purchased a used '94 Prelude VTEC that had 37k miles. It was the same green color as the one at the beginning of this video with black leather interior. It had the nicer rims that came on the '94 - '96 models. Loved driving that car but due to its extreme impracticality, I kept it less than a year. It would realistically only seat 2 people. The back seat was a joke. Nevertheless, it was fun to drive and I have no regrets purchasing it, even though the owner experience was short lived.
My aunt had one of these. She wasn't a driving enthusiast or anything, she simply liked the way it looked. Always remember loving riding in the back seat as a kid.
I baby my 93 prelude I see it as a collectable now that its not being made anymore its clean with the original h22a1 in it stock everything rims and original fog lights
@@cpaaretrofit not yet. but 80s 90s japanese cars are becoming quite popular. It is just a matter of time when these go up in price. I have a nissan cherry turbo from "85 bought it 10 years ago for 1.000€, tidied it up. when i look at the prices now, they begin at 5.000€ for a moderate one, not even a nice well cared for example like i have.
@@cpaaretrofit LOL these unmodded with lower miles, say 100 k , VTEC from 93-96 will go for 10-15k on the used market. They are highly sought after in original condition. One of the best cars of the 90s period.
I owned this and this exact car and was crazy good. Cornered so well and the power from the engine was amazing. The design is so beautiful as well. I've owned a few sports cars but this one is probably my favorite. 94 prelude vtec
I just watched the Motorweek review on the 1990 Ferrari 348 and this Prelude is only a half second slower from 0-60 mph and only 3 mph slower through the 1/4 mile and a few tenths behind the 348. That’s pretty impressive for the time especially considering that the Ferrari has 110 more horsepower.
ViolentDeepFart That's true, I've got a stock suspension Grand Prix w/ worn all season tires and even at around 245 at the wheels I spin to at least 30-40... should've done my suspension and tires first :\
+PeePee2000 things were going just fine in the comments section till had to put your worthless words in......but I'll give you a thumbs up for being the first to leave a stupid comment!
+Audiwan Kenobi LOL and how do you figure because they are "faster"? they are about 25-30% more expensive to purchase and they are substantially less reliable especially back in these days I know because I've owned and A4 and a Prelude.
I expected a 7.1 0-60 and a 15.2 quarter mile at like 92 mph..I'm in shock but the numbers they got here..that's still quick by today's times and back them that was a straight rocket
This Prelude was the golden coupe of Honda's coupe lineup during the 90's, but the only thing I wanted to see was like John said back then, an all analog gauge cluster, behind the steering wheel. The 97 Prelude resolved that issue along with more rear seat room, that could fit small adults back there and not just small kids.
I don’t know why, but this guys voice gives me super nostalgia from the 90s. I love this decade. And this prelude 😍 ugh. My first car was a 1992 si 5 speed manual. I miss it every day. I need to get another one!
My boss bought a new 94' prelude so I went and got one too but got the 95' Si. Also have a friend who went and found a 93' Vtec model but he didn't have the glowing gauges that started to use in 94'. Best looking interior of the day with those gauges.
I had a 96 black metallic Prelude VTEC. I bought it new and kept it for seven years. It was one of the last produced. It was the best car I ever had. I still remember how super smooth the engine was at all RPMs.
Very impressive performance for an early 90's 4 banger car, I've never knew you could get that much horsepower and performance out of a stock Honda Prelude, love the song at 4:16 the song is Damn Yankees' "Where You Goin' Now?"
Evan Boyer there even faster with some weight reduction, bolt on mods, and a good tune even 12 second 1/4 miles naturally aspirated depending on how far u go with mods. great cars awesome engines!😍
Looks like that quarter mile is downhill though right? I owned a 95 VTEC. It was quick, but I'm not sure if it ever got to 60 in 6.3 seconds. I would guess high 6 to low 7 seconds. Acceleration aside, it was fun car. Regret selling it.
Early 90s, my roommate had a fully loaded Prelude, which I enjoyed driving it while he was too intoxicated to return, not as fast as my Talon TSI, but fun car to drive fast and easy/safe. Great memories 👌.
My first brand new car was a '95 Preludes Si....I was so busy looking at Supras, that I didn't check the VTEC. The Prelude was an early college grad gift from my Grandfather, after I totaled my 240SX (due to my tires being mounted backwards after a brake job on a rainy day). Anyway, I miss my Prelude and later S2000 which I sold after I bought a 350Z..
So lucky to have one of these. I picked up a 1993 Honda Prelude Si-VTEC for $1400 NZD a few months ago. Has done 212000kms and lived a pretty hard and neglectful life.
One that I've learned from watching these kind of videos is that these cars are safe for drunk driving. I mean just look at how he is swerving around them cones.
I have a 1994 prelude 2.2 5 speed it's my baby may not be the fastest but it so much fun to drive it handles so well is good on gas I put 3 motors in redone the suspension steering rack and currently have a JDM h22a truly a amazing car for its time and still to this day I've had it for 10 years now and it's went from 300,000 mile beater to almost being fully restored if enough people ask for more videos I'll upload more only have one video up as of now
I don't see these Preludes very often these days, always kind of liked them. I wasn't crazy about the dashboard layout but there was no denying the car had very sharp, tight handling and good performance for the day. This was sort of the strange time for Honda, they were trying to take their design language in a different direction (such as, 'let's kill off the very popular CRX Si and replace it with the Del Sol')...it didn't always work. They got the engine and most of the exterior styling right on this car, it doesn't look almost 30 years old!
i remember the day i was setting inside on of these Honda prelude .. brand new dark titanium gray color .. back then once i turn the key ignition where you have digital gauge light turns on it give that modern advanced feedback .. i was like WOW that is cool
Man that car was a gem! I always wanted one of those! I remember just stoping by the dealer just to take a test drive! Lol. That car was kind of ahead of its time, and still looks beautiful today! I ended up buying a civic ex coupe instead, wasnt a bad car at all! But i really wanted that prelude, just couldnt afford it at the time.
Yes best dash ever. A 95/96 gen 4 VTEC is one of the best cars ever made. better than 5th gen and more balanced as a drive even than TYPE R. It is a great car.
Ashley Wolf The NSX, which I had forgotten about when I made my comment above, was a nice car, I'll give you that. But I wouldn't compare a Prelude to a Ferrari.
Some of these preludes had this crazy hydraulic pump connected to the drivers front axle to help with torque steer, I have only seen one and thank God I did not have to work on it 😩🤯
Well maybe the new helix engine with the self actuating driveshafts should be introduced into the prelude. All hinges on if honda likes the proposal, and if the prototype makes code. Fingers crossed by this guy!
They are pretty fast, but I don't recall seeing numbers quite that good anywhere else. They will easily do 0-60 in 7 seconds though, which was pretty quick for the day.
Very fast times. The prelude is an unfortunately underrated platform, and one of my favorite hondas. I used to have a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse gst and i raced a prelude on the freeway one time, we were neck and neck and i barely pulled, i think we were both stock.
The Japanese Big Three were all on fire in the 90’s. It sucked to be a teen/young adult who loved Toyota sports cars at the time because I couldn’t afford ANY of them. I finally got my Celica in ‘99 and by then they didn’t offer a turbocharged model in my country 🤨 I have one now though! 😝 SW20 Turbo too!
Always wanted a Prelude, but back then they were just to pricey. Had to settle for 1991 CRX Si. Sure wish companies would bring back coupes like this. Sporty, but also a bit of luxury. Sadly if they did, they would price them so high they would be sold in such small numbers it would only last a few years. I don't understand why Honda stopped the Accord coupe. Well I understand, for the same price, you can get a 4 dr sedan.
I had a 4th gen like that but with the much weaker 2.0 f series. I loved it. I think it looks still very good for a car from 91. sadly the prelude doesnt get much recognition these days.

Amazed at that 0-60 time! Had no idea.
Love these retro reviews!
ha ha i just bought a 93 prelude with the h22a1 for $1200 bucks 143k miles. this will be my 6th prelude so far👍
i remember the day i was setting inside on of these Honda prelude .. brand new dark titanium gray color .. back then once i turn the key ignition where you have digital gauge light turns on it give that modern advanced feedback .. i was like WOW that is cool
4cycl 200hp cars back in the 90s was a technological breakthru
I owned the 92 non vtec with the f23, still a ton of fun.
Awesome! This was my first car back in high school. Oh, the memories.
the interior is just awesome
Man that car was a gem! I always wanted one of those! I remember just stoping by the dealer just to take a test drive! Lol. That car was kind of ahead of its time, and still looks beautiful today! I ended up buying a civic ex coupe instead, wasnt a bad car at all! But i really wanted that prelude, just couldnt afford it at the time.
I had a blue 94 SR-V prelude (The Canadian Si-VTEC). I loved that car. Wish I never sold it.
Dam I miss those AC slide controls, I use to slide them back and forth when I was a kid. Good olde days sigh
I had a 94 Si - most fun car I've had aside from my mechanically inferior 2002 Maxima. 14.6 is fast for 30 years ago.
These were the fastest Preludes! The 97-01 did 0-60 in 6.5 with an LSD!!!
A Grand Turismo favorite!
+tanarvis tennant especially the green one is pretty sweet
had a 96 vtec model with the digital dash and that was my favorite car out of all the cars I've ever owned.
Yes best dash ever. A 95/96 gen 4 VTEC is one of the best cars ever made. better than 5th gen and more balanced as a drive even than TYPE R. It is a great car.
0-60 @ 6.3sec Thats a solid digit. My 11 Acura TSX V6 is Heavy and rates around 5.7-5.9
Best gen of Prelude IMO
I thought the 97 Prelude was much better looking.
@@hakeemsd70m 97 has nothing on the 4th gen front end. 4th gen by far the best in a VTEC
6.3 sec. 0-60 time for a car with a non-turbo 4 cylinder engine...not bad.
ohhhh shit 14.6 in the quarter mile!! that's as fast as my 89 5.0! wow
jayjaylen75 yessir i love h swaps got this in my 95 accord coupe and the matching m2b4 lsd trans shes a bad bitch
I miss my ‘95 Prelude Si, best sporty car I’ve ever owned. Same beautiful Milano Red as the test car in this video. Never should have sold it
Beautiful, good sounding, and quick! Man, these older Hondas were like a bargain and economy versions of Ferrari.
BerryA86 The words Honda and Ferrari should never be used in the same sentence. Ridiculous comparison!
242HP Then you are a bit uninformed. The NSX, for instance, was developed as an answer to the Ferrari 328/348.

Ashley Wolf The NSX, which I had forgotten about when I made my comment above, was a nice car, I'll give you that. But I wouldn't compare a Prelude to a Ferrari.
242HP
Fair enough, and I concur.
It's crazy to think this Prelude in today's dollars is over $40k. Yikes. It was an awesome and beautiful car though. I still love the design.
This was faster than MotorWeek on s2000 ap1 and the ap2 only matched these times 😂.
Some of these preludes had this crazy hydraulic pump connected to the drivers front axle to help with torque steer, I have only seen one and thank God I did not have to work on it 😩🤯
The prelude is a
timeless design.
damn that car would be quick TODAY
I had one of these... I liked it, this car was good to me.
ONE WORD: BEAUTIFUL
I had a 95 best car I owned.. I see rumors of them bringing it back but it's doubtful.. If they do bring it back I hope they don't screw it up
Well maybe the new helix engine with the self actuating driveshafts should be introduced into the prelude. All hinges on if honda likes the proposal, and if the prototype makes code. Fingers crossed by this guy!
I don't know why, but the front end of the Prelude reminded me of the Eagle Talon.
That idling h22 sounded sick
They are pretty fast, but I don't recall seeing numbers quite that good anywhere else. They will easily do 0-60 in 7 seconds though, which was pretty quick for the day.
Very fast times. The prelude is an unfortunately underrated platform, and one of my favorite hondas. I used to have a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse gst and i raced a prelude on the freeway one time, we were neck and neck and i barely pulled, i think we were both stock.
I learned to drive manual in one of these. Memories.
I miss my 1997 SH...i love the prelude..
The Japanese Big Three were all on fire in the 90’s. It sucked to be a teen/young adult who loved Toyota sports cars at the time because I couldn’t afford ANY of them. I finally got my Celica in ‘99 and by then they didn’t offer a turbocharged model in my country 🤨
I have one now though! 😝 SW20 Turbo too!
Oh my! ❤ when the Vtec kicks in...
... I wonder what a mint condition Prelude of this year would get at Mecum or Barrett Jackson.
Always loved this car.
These cars were so fun to drive.
Damn 0-60 in 6.3 seconds, that's faster than the GT86 over 2 decades later
I love my 4th gen Prelude!!!
Here's a MotorWeek Retro Review of the Honda Prelude from 1993.
A 6.3 0-60 is ridiculous for the age and power. They really got all of that to ground
Those engines could be modded to twice the horsepower and still work reliably. Extraordinary engineering.
Didn't like didgital and analog guages.....now thats all you see..Prelude was always ahead of its time
@MotorWeek how about posting the retro DelSol road tests?
what's a good price range for a used one in excellent condition?
Restoring a 95 si. Such a fun car.
I had a 4th gen like that but with the much weaker 2.0 f series. I loved it. I think it looks still very good for a car from 91. sadly the prelude doesnt get much recognition these days.
99Lezard99 mines has a 2.0L F but its the 200hp f20b and it moves for what it is. I smoke cars every time I drive it.
I worked at the Honda dealer back then and drove many of these brand new.. remember the Prelude was a quick car but I prefered the Mustang 5L
Good gosh that car was fast. I wish my car was that fast today ROFL!
