    In 2018 my wife and I got married. The very next day we went to the middle of oregon and picked up a 1988 g10 sportvan. The man we bought it from had it listed for $700 and craigslist description only said runs and drives. Come to find out he bought it off the lot in 88 and i was shocked to find a 1 owner classic. The original 305 finally gave out this year so I am heavily considering putting a ls in. I definitely think i could get a few dollars once the ls is in

      Sounds like a nice machine. If the job is done cleanly it will probably come close to doubling the vans value. I really like how much more useable and driveable the van is. More than doubled my fuel mileage. Its a big job tho. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Going to comment here too. If you don't already have a van, the 1988-up vans have a larger doghouse as GM made the 454 an option that year. They have TBI fuel injection, so they already have the fuel sender with an electric pump (TBI is only about 15 PSI). They also typically have a rear ABS unit. In 1992 they went to a 4L60E or 4L80E and an electric operated speedometer. The ECU was placed under the driver's seat and the OBD-1 port on the lower dash rail to the right of the column. They have a two-piece fan shroud, which saves headaches removing them. They also got airbags, an improved, shielded lower steering column, and a 4WAL ABS located under the middle right floor with a ridiculous number of brake lines.
    Power windows/locks are not hard to add, either, the harness is an add-on that runs across under the dash. You can swap doors or swap the guts into your doors.
    I would suggest sourcing an Express van as a donor, as many come with a pretty basic stock wiring harness, they had crank windows up into the 2010s and a work van doesn't have a lot of extra wiring to deal with. They also have long dipsticks and on the Vortec 5.7 the AC compressor is already on top, I can't imagine they changed it on the LS.
    The Express came out 1996 as a 1500 and 2500, the 1-ton remained this classic style for one last year. I had a couple, they're mechanically fairly decent but tons of plastic parts in the body and they rust pretty bad up here. When I got the chance to get a low mileage 1994 I bought it.

      Hey, i welcome all comments, knowledge is hard to come by. You sure know the ins and outs of these vans !! I love them all. It definitely would have helped to have a little more room around the engine that the newer ones have. This van has been in the family for a couple decades so it was already destined to be with me forever. I would love to do the swap again on a late 80’s fullsize conversion van, you know the ones with basically your living room in them!!!
      Appreciate you watching my videos😀

      @CR7659 Год назад

      @@BrokenWrenches I wouldn't say I'm an expert but I've owned about half a dozen of them over the years. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, just thought I'd bring it up for the guy who hasn't bought a van yet, you can save yourself some hassle.
      Pole Barn Garage is going even more ambitious - repairing a rusted '77 with the floors and firewall from a '95. Going to be like a full size AMT model kit build.
      I actually had one van die because of a bad thermostat. I went to change it and a bolt in the water neck snapped off. Okay, I had another engine on a pallet, I'll just swap the intake. No, got to the two front bolts and they also snapped off. Being a NY van it had a fair amount of rust and wasn't worth a motor swap.

    cant wait to dig through these videos. we’re gearing up to swap my 81 g20 and these little things like the firebird coolant sensor to use the factory gauge is super nice to find out about. i grabbed a holley terminator which will be nice for all the digital readouts and such, but i also don’t want a factory cluster fukk of dead gauges haha. thanks for all your hard work filming and posting these videos. gonna be a huge help. by the way if you’re concerned about water dripping onto the air filter, they make socks that fit over cone filters like that. fine mesh they’re a super fine mesh material that doesn’t let water in. google “cone filter rain sock”.
    lastly, for my van i have the same dilemma with camping vs work horse. i have a 2x4 frame that has industrial velcro strips on top running long ways and a sheet of plywood wrapped in a vinyl carpet material so that i can separate the two and take the bed in and out of it myself. takes me 20 minutes to convert the van back and fort between camp and work. just tossing a mattress in the back would be fine if it were for all the camping stuff and luggage you end up bringing, so the slightly raise frame and platform for our futon creates a ton of storage for our lawn chairs and cooking gear and such.

    It took 4 months for a swap? That’s actually faster than I thought it could be done. Around how much did it cost? I have a G30 (86) I’d like to put a new engine and transmission in it. This looks like a lot of stuff to do.

    • @BrokenWrenches
      @BrokenWrenches  Год назад

      It only took about 40-60 hours to pull the old one out and get the new one in and running. I did a bunch of extra work not related to the LS swap and that part took a lot more time. Its really no different than swapping out a carbureted engine, a little more wiring and fab work.
      I had $750 in the engine and probably $1000 or so in other parts..
      It sure was worth it.
      I’m still running the old TH350 transmission but when it dies I can put a 4L60E in it. This will only require modifying the trans crossmember and shortening the driveshaft.

      Do you have part numbers for the compressor and serpentine belt? Assuming they wouldn’t be included in the kit.

    Hi Brandon
    Do you still sell the AC brackets somewhere?
    I‘m swapping a 1992 G30 4x4 (Pathfinder) with a LQ9 and a 4L80e and would like to get the A/C back working.
    Thanks for your reply
    Regards out of switzerland

    Did I miss how you did transmission cv cable/ kickdown?

    • @BrokenWrenches
      @BrokenWrenches  Год назад

      Good catch my friend!!! You did not miss it, currently the cable is zip tied to a wiring harness.
      The TH350 only uses the downshift cable when you get on it real hard to pass someone or whatever. During normal driving conditions the kickdown cable does nothing. I had about 2 options to make it work with a complete drive by wire engine. 1. Rig up some kind of linkage connected to the gas pedal which was the best option, that was doable but would require a lot of tinkering to build. 2. Use a microswitch on the gas pedal to trigger an electric actuator to pull the cable……. Since I eventually plan to install a 4L60E I decided to just leave that undone. If I need to pass someone i can just manually drop it down a gear and get on it. The rest of the time the trans operates normally. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Could you have used a electric fan and do away with the fan shroud and fan blade ? Just asking would of saved you a lot more room

    • @BrokenWrenches
      @BrokenWrenches  Год назад +1

      no worries, i like questions........ The ecm is actually set up to control an electric fan if needed.. However in my full time job restoring classic cars I have come to the realization that simpler is better... What I mean is that the less electrical aftermarket stuff you throw at a car the less likely they will break.. I fix a LOOOOOOOOOTTT of electrical stuff on the classics. Cant beat the reliability of plain old boring mechanical parts..

    So wait. You are using the same trans that was on the van here?

    • @BrokenWrenches
      @BrokenWrenches  8 месяцев назад +1

      yep. other than drilling 3 new holes in the flexplate and bending the dipstick tube its a direct swap. same driveshaft, same shifter linkage and everything. reason you ask,,,, th350 had been built recently and works flawlessly and a newer 4l60e or better starts at about $ 2K, which i didn’t have to spend at the time. however it definitely will get an overdrive upgrade at some point and the ecm is already setup to run it.

      @@BrokenWrenches I’m debating that route. Mostly cause I’ll be doing a swap that’s still under 300hp
