Always remove the fill plug on a transfer case or differential before draining fluid. If the fill plug is frozen or stripped, you can order a new plug or cover and do the job later. If you drain the fluid first and you destroy that plug getting it out, you just disabled your truck until you can get new parts.

Use a putty knife, not a screwdriver to open it up, you will bend your cover or gouge your housing. And use the correct silicone made for gear oil and friction modifiers. Permatex makes it. Make sure you make circles around the bolt holes and only hand tighten the bolts and let cure for about an hour, then tighten to specs. If not you will squeeze out all the gasket maker too thin and might leak? You should see the sealant come out all the way around the outside of the cover if you do it right. Once it comes out after hand tightening, stop. Wait for an hour, then torque it down. Temperatures will change that time if colder?

I have worked in the auto industry for 36 years. The reason the manufacture use sealant is because it is more economical and applied using a robot. I use a gasket when changing fluids in my F250 diffs. Never had a leak.

Hey kidderz! I am 66 and just changed my 2000 superduty f250 front diff with 80w90 gear/diff oil conventional. I have cursed the stubborn 4x4 turning. I just drove the field round about the brush pile! Wow! Sharp turns with no hang-ups!!!!!!! Never knew the heavy old muddy oil would restrict turning. I also dumped and flushed grey metal sparkles from the transfer case! I added proper atf.

  • @willb7975

Thanks brother... Used 80W90 Valvoline in squeeze bottle. Front Dana 60 was simple drain and fill. In lieu of gooey gasket, I used Lubelocker's reusable gasket - 4 weeks and no leaks. IIRC, torque was 30-32 ft lbs.

A old man from one of the gasket sealant companies showed me how they recommend installing their sealant and ever since then I have yet to have a leak. He said one that we all use extremely way too much. It should not squeeze out. Nor should it slide around. He showed me to use very little and then use your finger and pat it over and over spreading thinly like a gasket on the surface. You pat it with your finger so you do not have a smooth surface but lots of ridges. Do both sides the same way and by the time your done it’s thin enough it should be tacky. Install and done. No mess out the sides. No sliding around. A complete seal.

I pumped green fluid out of a front differential on a 2003 F250 6.0 Powerstroke super duty king ranch today. I don't know what it was but the only I can find online that is green is Shell Spirax sae 30. I put the limited slip differential additive and 80w90 full synthetic gear oil when I filled the front differential. My video is called "2003 Ford F-250 6.0 liter King Ranch 4x4 front and rear differential drain and fill". That Green sludge from the front differential was ridiculously hard to pump out it was like sae 200 weight.

Rear and front diff fluid 80w90 which had a drain bolt.. thank the Lord
    Changed fluid in trans case
    Changed oil
    Air and cabin filter (filthy)
    Spark plugs (fouled)
    Flush brake fluid
    Changed Front brake pads
Checked back rear brakes and the dealer slapped new pads on backwards and rotors were shot.. that was when I had had enough because there was also fiberglass coming out the muffler … WTH 🤦🏾‍♀️
Dropped it back off at dealer and told the to fix it.

Could it be drained through the plug hole? Or are you doing that so any metal shavings that may be there are removed in their entirety?

    • @PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod
      @PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod  3 года назад

E, there is no drain hole..

Fill hole, using a vacuum draw and semi-rigid extension hose to get to the bottom of the housing.

@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod I've used an evacuation set up to suck out the oil through the fill hole. Not much room to get the hose past the ring gear, but with a little finagling . . .

@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod I mainly ask because I used that method to change the transmission fluid in my John Deere's shitty k46 transmission and replaced it with amsoil. And it was like a new transmission afterwards. So I guess it really comes down to getting any metal shavings that may be contaminating the fluid or would a 95% evacuation be even worthwhile and beneficial. Between you and my local diesel mechanic David, I respect your opinion and I also respect the fact that you have to do things according to the book even when sometimes the book is not correct. And I'm referring to your 7.3 silicone versus 6.7 silicone and the manufacturers disconnect on its intended purpose and being around diesel fuel.

I didn’t see or hear you mention using any additives.

I am 100% certain your truck came with an owners manual. All of that info can be found in the capacities section of your manual.

What’s the benefit of draining diff and replacing fluid? Is that what we feel on the steering wheel?

The benefit is pretty much the same as changing any other fluid. The diff fluid get dirty and contaminated from the wearing of the parts inside. The fluid properties can break down over time too. So the benefit would be to help make the parts last longer. Fluid is a lot cheaper than new parts and not having to deal with a failure and all that goes with that.
