"Hu" is the Mogolian word for themselves. Basically it means "the people" in reference to their own people. The song is meant to be a reclamation and update to the culture. In essence "we're not completely warlike now as we were in the past, but if you come for us, we'll come for you...and we'll win" According to their website: The HU combines Rock Music with traditional Mongolian instrumentation like the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp), guttural throating singing and the bombastic bass and drums of rock.
Yes, HU is root word for human, all humans, not just Mongolians. And Hunnu Rock is termed also from the oldest instrument, the Tovshuur played by Tempka. Dates from time of the Huns
Their culture is set in step and herding, but the conflict is across the mountains with agricultural people. At some point they overpowered pretty much anything around them by just killing all off, but every ideology will wind down and eventually they were pushed back to former self. Last century has been misery under Soviet and later part Chinese influence. For the nation building they need to look into the past and idealize former glory days.
Their collaboration with Lzzy Hale from Halestorm is brilliant. I believe the song is called "Song of Women" which was an original song for the HU, and they asked Lzzy to write her own lyrics and incorporate them into their instrumental. Lzzy was given full autonomy and what they produced is such a beautiful ode to women. Women in Mongol culture are revered and this song does just that.
The collaboration was nice, but I prefer the more romantic sounding original. Their version with Lzzy seemed more empowering, but the original seemed more like a love song to me.
@@Badattituud That's because it is a love song, and it isn't a Hu original, it was written by Genghis himself for his wife Börte shortly after he rescued her from Merkit captivity.

The HU means The People, so the chanting has a couple of layers. The instrunent is a morin khuur, aka horsehead fiddle. The rhytm is played on a tovshuur, a 3 stringed lute, and I really think he killed it in this song. I saw the Hu open twice for Babymetal in 2019, and they were fantastic. By all means check out the Metallica cover, also check the collab with Lizzy Hale. Any Hu song really, they are all cool.
Baby Metal would have been cool, and twice for sure, in Australia, had tickets for Melbourne and Brisbane, live near Melbourne, which was cancelled March 2020, smaller gigs played, drove 2000kms to Brisbane, fantastic, unfortunately it was their last gig before covid lockdown. Hoping they get back to Australia
You should definitely check out "Yuve Yuve Yu". The video itself is gorgeous, but there is also some really interesting focus on the instrumentation that I think gets a little lost in Wolf Totem. (Not that I'm complaining; I love Wolf Totem) You can definitely hear the tone of the tovshuur (the very aggressive looking 3 stringed guitar) much more clearly in "Yuve Yuve Yu" than here, but there is a moment toward the end of the video where one of the morin khuur players (Enkush, I think, but I'm only just learning their names) makes his instrument neigh like a horse. This a something a truly skilled player of this instrument can accomplish, and he nails it. It's also worthwhile to open up the closed captioning; their videos include English lyrics.
Galaa is the one that makes his morin khuur whinny. I really love to listen to these guys. I agree that "Yuve Yuve Yu" is beautiful cinematically as well as vocally.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned it but the biker group that’s there is actually a 1% outlaw biker gang known as the Mongols Nation or Mongol Brotherhood.
This song had closed captions, as do several HU songs so be sure to check for those. Since you are a music teacher, you may find two songs of particular interest ... "Sugaan Essena," which The HU were contracted to create in an alien language for the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game (ruclips.net/video/oJZfEh3EciU/видео.html) and is more of a rock anthem, and the acoustic version of "Shireg Shireg," which allows you to hear more of the subtleties of the instrumentation and throat singing (ruclips.net/video/8O7mJwuSyVA/видео.html).
