- Today Steve from Vanguard Engines shares with us one of their latest innovations, the Oil Guard system from Vanguard. This oil system caught my attention big time when Craig first dropped off the Ferris unit to demo, and I wanted to share more about this game changing innovation with you guys.
If you didn't know, Vanguard Engines came out with their brand new Oil Guard system, which is designed to help expand the life span of their engines and also the interval of the engines oil changes.
Steve also talks about many more advantages to the system including less parts for oil changes over time, cooler running temperatures on the engine oil, and better circulation and for the engine while on slopes and uneven terrain.
This system is currently exclusive on the Vanguard Engines and the Ferris line. It may become available over time on other units and platforms, but for now it's only available on Snapper and Ferris.

What do you guys think about the Oil Guard System, and the ability to only have to change the oil every 500 hours? Talk about a game changer.
Brian's Lawn Maintenance It adds a bigger system and probably cost to the mower. I think it's neat, but okay with standard systems.
I think this is too early to the lawn industry. They use a dry sump sort of lubrication in this system that is used almost exclusively on race cars and ultra high performance cars. Manufactures have had issues with dry sump oil in the auto industry this is why its not on most consumer cars yet. This is amazing in theory but I would like to see how it holds up long term being so far ahead of all the other industries.
I think it's awesome. Will be getting a ferris soon.
For people not familiar with the dry sump oil lubrication system, here is a link to a generic explanation en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_sump Also regarding durability, these types of oil lubrication systems have been around for MANY years and used in MANY different applications including consumer level motorcycles, automobiles, and even aircraft engines. These systems have been thoroughly tested and proven to be very reliable & cost effective in the long-term.
The only reason that system is there is because that Briggs engine needs it bc of there tendency to burn oil. If u get a Kohler or Kawi you do not need the oil guard system since they don’t burn oil!!!!

This technology has been out there for years -- it is has only recently become cost effective to start introducing it into mass produced small engines.

I think the oil guard system is a fantastic idea. Kinda like would you rather have a 2 gallon fuel tank or a 6 gallon. It’s difficult to argue capacity whether it’s horsepower, torque, air/oil filtration, fuel/oil capacities.

I do all my own maintainance. The only time my mowers go to the dealer is for major work or warranty work. I save alot of money by doing this. And i enjoy doing the work as well which makes a big difference.
I had a new is2100z ferris with the vangaurd oil system just a few months ago, but had to trade it off due to it not holding hills very well. Nice mower if your mowing fairly flat ground. I bought a Hustler Super Z which in my opinion is the king!
I look at it this way, the automotive and the racing world specifically have been running dry sump systems for years. I will be buying my next mower with this system...
I think it’s a great design. I’m just a weekend warrior (a new one at that). I ended up getting a Gravely but if I was full time I would’ve considered the Ferris for that reason.

I’m holding off buying a 36 inch Z1. I’m hoping they put the Oil guard system on it soon. I have a Z2 with the oil guard system and love it. I’m at the point where I refuse to buy any mower without oil guard system. I went From about $240 to spending about 70 on Oil changes.

About 50 hours on my z2 with the oil guard. So far love the mower. Going to be interesting to see how it holds up long term. I know they all burn oil eventually. Not much usually. I've had Kawasaki, Kohler, my first Briggs.
how are you liking the oil guard system so far? any flaws or complaints? im looking to buy in the next 2 weeks.
I've run my oil guard system on my ferris 2100z for 1.5 yrs now. I'll never buy another mower without it. At 150 hrs on the oil it still looks new....not all black and broke down like my past mowers after only a few hrs.
A few things I would change on the oil guard is have braided oil lines instead of plastic lines and the outside of the aluminum Reservoir to have heat sinks to help further pull the heat out of the aluminum Reservoir.
Regarding the heat sinks being added to the reservoir - it was tested & found that too much debris accumulated in them in reducing overall airflow over the reservoir & causing hot spots in the reservoir that actually reduced the life of the oil. Also the plastic oil lines are very durable - anything that may damage them would also damage a braided oil line. If you are concerned about them, then recommend wrapping them with spiral wrap like commonly used to protect exposed hydraulic lines.

I imagine that engine was a two-quart system at first, and then added the Oil Guard System later. So, my question is does the motor uses the same oil pump system to circulate such a large volume capacity?

Hey Brian love your channel. Got a video idea for ya. About lubricants like what oils you run in your mower and or your pre mix why you like them and other that you've used or companys you would try like exmark oil amsoil so and so forth I run exmark oil in my exmark and like it but didn't know if there is any other company out there that make great oil at a better price or better oil for a little more money but the quality is worth it. I saw someone post a video where Hustler had unit at a show using oil guard. Maybe it was the last gie? I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw other brands at gie unveil oil guard offerings.
I love my ferris z2 with oil guard system. I only with it had no grease points. If it did it would hardly need any regular maintenance

How is the crank misting of the oil handled that lubricates the lower piston skirt?
My dad had the wright stander since I was three and when I started my business he gave it to me and that is 10 years later and it still runs like it is brand new. It has saved me so much time and I have got so much money with it I bought a second one. Out of all of the mowers I think that one would be the best investment for you.
Hey Brian, I personally think that you should go with the Ferris stander with the oil guard system for several reasons, one is they are an awesome mower that look like they are built like a tank, you are already familiar with Ferris, oil guard is the future, and also something that a lot of business owners do not care about, or even think it is a big deal, but the Ferris matches the rest of your equipment being red and also the Ferris logo goes good with your logo. It drives me crazy when people buy mismatched equipment and trucks, I think it looks unprofessional. Company image means a lot, and you definitely have the right image, so keep it up!

so what briggs has done is put a dry sump tank on the side and pump to extract the oil from the engine and another pump to pressurize the oil back into the engine. more oil to assist in cooling as well as more detergent to last the life of the oil drain interval.

What keeps the oil level from getting too high within the engine with the resovoir being higher than the engine?
This is a dry sump oil lubrication system. There is a scavenger pump that pulls all the oil out of the engine's oil pan and sends it back into the remotely mounted reservoir, so there is never any possibility of the oil level getting too high inside the engine.
I bought a Ferris is2100z last year it doesn't have the oil guard system on it can I order one and add it now

Approximately how long would you say it takes to accumulate 500 hrs on a mower like this in a commercial mowing application?
EOSJOE Depending on how many yards you mow in a Day, but in commercial mowing, you could put 500 hours on the mower in a 1 season. The length of mowing seasons vary from your location in the US. I average about 300-350 hours and my season in TN is usually March-October.
J M yeah my season was generally late April, but usually May, to September and MAAAAYBE into October a bit.
So when you do change it you’re still leaving 2qts of dirty oil in the system or can the oil be drained from the motor
When you change any oil from any engine, you’re leaving some in there regardless. Even your Kawi and Kohler.

Easy fix. In the machines i sold this year, there's a hole for a zip tie between the cap and the alluminium flange. Here in italy there's no interest at all about the stand ons, not much more about the zero turns of all brands. But every ferris that I sold is absolutely a tank. I love the 51" is2100 with the 28hp vanguard... I think that this is their best machine so far.

It's a fantastic idea. There is actually nothing bad about it. 500 hours isn't a far stretch at all either. Almost all equipment is 500 or more hours on engine oil changes nowadays. To go from 100 hours to 500 hours is just in the advancements in oils and the fact that it's 6 quarts as well as a dry sump. The small 2 quart capacity cooking in the engine needs to be changed more frequently. 6 quarts having time to shed it's heat in a remote 6 quart reservoir made of aluminum is a fantastic idea.
Picture a molecule of oil in a standard setup. Always in the heat and always having to go to work. Now run the scenario in a 6 quart remote tank. It goes to work in the engine then takes the subway back to the tank where it lounges around in the pool cooing off. Watches a little TV, takes a nap, maybe gets a massage before heading back into work for one trip around the engine.

Pretty much every engine oil change does that, even your car.

So the engine still only needs/ operates on 2 quarts give or take but the extra oil in the oil guard reservoir keeps the oil away from the motor heat and there is more clean oil to circulate so the oil last longer ? Thats what I get out of it . He never really says what that engine needs to operate without that system in place . But this system does make sense if Im understanding it correctly . Oil changes suck so Im with anything that makes less of them! Great Video as always!
Quality Cut Lawn Care & Services Id estimate the 2 quarts are in / cycling through the block, the other 4 in the reservoir. I’ll have to confirm that. Good question.

Brian or others, is there any truth to the statement i've heard several times now that the top skin to the Ferris ICD deck is thinner and wears or fails faster then other brands, particularly if you mow in sandy soils? That would be my only reservation about Ferris if true.

My is2100z has it. I put 50hrs on it and changed the oil and it still looked like you could put it in a bottle and sell it again.
Can you still get it without the oil guard? Seems like after 500 hours you would still have fuel contamination in the oil which can do lots of damage. I love the Briggs engine but probably wouldn't trust going 500 hours
I promise you the Briggs & Stratton has done 1000's of hours of real world testing on this new engine oil lubrication system in all different operating conditions. They are very confident in this 500 hour oil change interval, otherwise they would not have kept the same engine warranty coverage as with the older engine design without the Oil Guard system. Remember there is alot more oil volume in the engines with the Oil Guard system, so any possible contamination gets diluted even more. Also the oil filter capacity is much larger on the Oil Guard system and can filter alot more than other oil filters currently used on the engines without the Oil Guard system.

It is a great system in theory. The biggest problem is that you may be saving oil change costs but there is zero substitute for regular maintenance. This is a lazy mans version to change oil. My question to them is if you follow their recommended schedule and you have a engine issue will they stick to their word. I’m gonna guess no.
Nice but no thanks cause the biggest problem as well is that filter looks proprietary so you have to go to the dealer anyway.
TODD EBERLEIN I would concur with Steve when he said it’s an insurance policy on your oil. Most folks just don’t keep an eye on oil. And I have to hit the dealer up regardless in the spring for a tune up and parts orders. For me personally, anytime I can reduce the frequency of trips there, it’s guaranteed to save me money.

TODD EBERLEIN when it comes to oil, capacity and filtration is king. Having the ability to change oil in under 10 minutes and having a prominent “look at me” oil tank could help remind people to check more often. With equipment and maintenance it’s all about culture. You either have a maintenance/inspection culture or you get to visit your dealer often for break downs and repairs.
Owner/operators set the tone and pace for how the equipment is treated. If it’s important to you, your people will see that and be more likely to comply with inspections. Just my 2 cents.

Brian's Lawn Maintenance that would be a deal breaker..I have a Pro-Turn 460 and I change the oil every 30 hours.
It used to be a thing (with vehicles) to do an oil change, run it for 10-20 miles or so, and do another oil change, just to get more of the old oil out.
i honestly dont get some people. your machine is your lively hood. take the extra 15 min to check the oil and all wear iteams. when i get employees the check list i go through personally every morning right now will be passed on to them and enforced to the max.

When you change oil you will be leaving one quart of dirty oil in the engine?

2 qts every 100 hours is 10 qts and 5 filters plus your time in 500 hours whereas this engine uses 6 qts and 1 filter every 500 hours. And I think some of the Briggs engines (Commercial Turf maybe) is every 50 hours. That's 20 qts and 10 oil filters plus your time every 500 hours.
The only problem with that is that your gonna be spending a pretty decent amount of money on oil every year but u do get what u pay for

That is how Briggs says change it BUT you know there is still 1 qt of OLD Nasty oil in that motor dont you?? Best way is to do all you did BUT remove plug on bottom side of block and drain another pint out then put your new oil into tank [plug back in] no filter yet Then remove plug wires and remove one oil line from engine to top oil filter and crank over --this will pump new oil into system and another pint of old oil out --pump into a cup till clean new oil comes out--Now put another qt oil in button up and NOW you have a COMPLETE Oil change with ALL new oil,
Other way is like changing oil in your pickup and putting one qt of old nasty oil back into your engine--SAME THING,,,
He says in the video that one quart will remain in the machine when you change your oil so you're not truly getting an oil change sounds like a bad product to me
You understand that there is also normally about a quart of old oil left in all the newer cars & trucks when their oil is changed too. It is factored into the factory oil change intervals that a certain percentage of old oil is going to remain in the engine regardless of how long you leave the oil drain plug out & oil filter off. The only way to get every drop of old oil out of an engine would be to completely disassemble it & flush out all the ports & variable valve timing components.

Quart of residual oil is BS... system should drain completely. Hopefully they have drain plug on engine casing.
The Vanguard Oil Guard system is.just a fancy name for a dry sump oil lubrication system. All dry sump lubrication system leave some residual oil in the system due to the design of a scavenger pump, all the plumbing to & from the reservoir, and then a pressure pump. The only way to get every last drop of old oil out of the system is to completely disassemble & flush it.
KCautodoctor you sure it's really a dry sump system and not just a normal pump system with a big reservoir and filter attached? I can't see B&S really changing engine design that much when most of what they sell is standard. I bet they're cheating kind of, and just increasing capacity.
I am positive it is a full fledged dry sump oil system - no short cuts or shady marketing talk by Briggs & Stratton with this new oil system. They have designed the system to be integral from the factory with this specific engine -- which is why it is not being offered as an add-on accessory. There are videos on RUclips that have a cutaway version of a running engine with this Vanguard Oil Guard lubrication system installed on it - it clearly shows it is a dry sump oil lubrication system being used.

AIR cleanliness == engine snorkel spinner precleaner then to Donald radial seal then to engine mounted filter . All pipe work stainless with no internal rust debris . No one does this .

Sorry bud. Reality is that 99% of folks just don’t. It’s not opinion, it’s fact. Which is why this is a game changer for companies with fleets of units, all the way down to the solo owner operator guy.

Every industry is different with daily checks and maintenance for equipment.
Traditional lawn guys operate solely on volume, so there is "no time" to check the oil. Or so they think.
Heavy equipment operators (like me, by trade) are used to a morning walk-around of the machine, checking all fluids before starting, greasing at the end of every day and sometimes after lunch depending on the machine and application, and even cleaning out your tracks at the end of EVERY day. Heck, up in the oil fields in the winter, you clean out your tracks twice a day.
Down time costs on lawn equipment is paltry compared to breaking an excavator or motor grader.
When I started my company, I mixed excavation with lawn maintenance, land/Xeriscape, concrete, retaining walls, and the occasional fence or deck. So my daily checks and maintenance were like those of an equipment operator.
But my machines and my vehicles didn't break down from lack of maintenance, because maintenance is ALWAYS cheaper than repair. Every. Single. Time.
And if you truly don't have time for maintenance, then you are overbooked and/or understaffed. So fix the problem, don't bandage it.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of the oil guard system. It MUST lower operating Temps, if even a few degrees, and that is awesome.

An oil change every 50-75 hours? You're wasting time and money doing that.
I gotta leave a whole quart of the dirtiest thickest old oil in the bottom of it? That alone gets a no go from me.

How’s it save money? 6 quarts and that filter cost more than 3 regular oil changes, it doesn’t even make sense. You have a certain amount of contaminants you need to get rid of, now it’s simply diluted with your whole seasons worth of oil that you carry around all day and uses a more expensive filter. Do the elementary math, it should be obvious. The mower manufacturers desperation to win the “feature wars” is getting shameful.

I’ll play ball if you want, show us the savings with some facts, like bottom line dollar facts, I hope I’m wrong, I have respect for the manufacturers efforts and advancements made, and I take pride being part of the equipment industry but I only see engineering overcoming ignorance here. I didn’t hear, Is it an option or a forced feature? I really don’t agree with forcing mindful owners to pay more for units because of added features they never needed or wanted just so the lazy can be more lazy.
