    I have owned one since the late 90's. Here are a few things to consider. 1) The Vood doo mods are not really needed. Place a BBE Sonic Maximizer (lots of guys did this back then) with the knobs (Lo Contour & Process) around noon to 1 O'clock after the preamp- not in the loop. 3) There is a switch on the outputs and FX loop which go from -10db to + 4 db, use the +4 db. 4) your main volume knob should only be set at about 9 O'clock. If it is cranked like you are doing, something is not right in the gain staging. It will scream through any tube power amp at 9 O'clock if it is set up correctly. 5) use an EL34 power amp! Use the channel volumes to get most of your level. 6) the EQ and Presence are not a typical tone stack. It actually has a non-adjustable tone stack and those tone knobs are really a 4 band Graphic EQ. Use it sparingly! When setup properly it is one of the best Plexi to modern gain Marshall tones available. I have never gotten so many complements on my tone than when I used this preamp with a BBE and an EL34 power amp. Also, a DSL works great for a power amp. 7) The 12AX7 tubes make quite a bit of difference to really get it dialed in. One of the tubes is only for the cleans while the other is for the OD channels. Like you said, A boost isn't really needed but if you want it to sound a little thicker use an Exotic EP booster. I would describe the JMP-1 as this: If you want to chug....this will do it!

    • @Danvezina
      @Danvezina Месяц назад +1

      And the BBE makes everything sound artificial. Thats why most people who used them in the past got rid of them.

    While I never became warm with the JCM's, this one was for me the best thing, they made for decades.
    OD-2 meanwhile could be even heavier, but this is early 1990's gear, so ok, on the other hand Clean 1 offers surprisingly good vintage clean sounds, which you usually do not expect from a Marshall. So, everything there for everybody, I would say including stereo and midi.
    An upgraded version with a slightly hotter OD-2 channel and maybe some minor additions like resonance would be nice, I think. Nevertheless even today still great.
    Do not own the 9200 power amp, so I use a power scalable KT77 power amp.

    Don't gel with a Marshall? I know a few players that say that. Same reason. Thin and lots of treble. I remember a band playing when I was a teenager and he had a great 1980s Iron Maiden lead tone. Fat and smooth like Dave Murray. I knew the people in the band, so asked to try the amp later on. I could not play through it. Horribly thin and lots of high end. It was a JCM 800 2203. What I've learned since is that when boosting them that thinness and high end really cuts in a mix and does not sound thin like that with the rest of the band playing. I am not sure why it sounded fat when the band was playing, but so thin on its own. In the mix there's all that bite and snarl that sounds so cool, but is nasty on its own when just noodling.
    P.S. I had this rig in the 1990s. 200 watt Dual Monoblock, JMP-1, and a 1960a cab so I could run stereo. I traded it for a Digitech tube preamp (that sounded cool, because it had a decent sounding tube preamp plus lots of nice effects etc -- but since then I have noticed some of the tone people get from a JMP-1 that I did not, so regretted letting it go - oh well -- water under the bridge etc).

    JMP-1 is lame cause i know as ive had two of them and they sounded exactly the same. yes even with new JJs and the same power amp retubed with matched mullets. what a waste of money. very lucky i broke even on that deal. if u heard that Def Leppard /Iron Maiden and even MegDETH AND zztOP USE THIS RIG THEN DONT EXPECTT TO GET ANY MORE OUT OF IT. he must be maxing the crap out of it with whatever pedal he has in the chain here.
