There were several of the tones from both pedals and amps that my opinion completely differed from Robs. Lee said the Boss was 5.9 but I was actually surprised with the correct score. He really chose the Kemper, which isn't cheap but also not what I'd expect for his preference, as number one and gave the Katana really high marks considering its competition.
Over the last few years I've become very interested in not only guitar gear but also in hi-fi. From looking at the results of many blind tests, I've come to the conclusion that human hearing just isn't very reliable. I wish Anderton's would get back to doing videos like this. This channel has inspired me to buy a crap ton of gear, unfortunately none from Anderton's because I live in the States.
PRS has a compressed sound anyway, so I wonder if that has skewed the results slightly. Amazing sounding guitar, just a thought. Also, we've learned an awful lot about Rob's ability to work this stuff out, once again.
What does he have against the EVH 5150 III? He never likes it, but it always sounds so good and this is one of the most used metal amps from bands all the way from Steel Panther to Belphegor for several years.
Honestly I never cared for them very much either until I played one specific 100w head at a shop a couple months ago and bought it a few days later. I fell in love with the sound of the MXR 5150 pretty much as soon as I heard it though. I always liked the sound of the 5150 III when other people played it but I couldn't ever get them to sound good for me for the longest time.
I've got the 6L6 version in 50W and 100W Stealth versions and love them. The 50W EL34 is getting a lot of flack for a loose flubby bottom end on the blue channel. No idea if they used the blue channel here.
Great show. Keep doing this type of format for things. It helps bring to light what types of differences are noticeable and what isn't which is really interesting.
i think rob juts don't like the sound of a 6l6 tubes, 6l6 can sound a little fizzy in the top end it might create the perception that it is a digital amp.
Didn't like the 5150 III EL34 either, so I think it's just a matter of dialing things in really. The Kemper wins with a specifically dialed in amp, almost like the ultimate setting possible. The Kemper is definitely on my wish-list, although I would prefer a combo (makes more sense in the home than a head/cabinet combo for me).
The Kemper has an advantage because it is an "ideal"almost post production circumstance instead of just an amp in the room .A fairer test would be from a control room in a studio with the gear in another room all played back through the monitors.
LOL, whether authentic or set up, these are still great fun to watch because the Anderton’s staff are a great cast of characters....and very talented ones for sure!😎🤙🏻
Glad to see these are back! (Cap and Chap) This channel took a massive hit but I’m sure you guys exquisitely hilarious and informative videos for us fellow musicians will bring it back to where it belongs! Cheers from Houston, Texas🖖🏽🇺🇸
I think all pedals sound like there were a cloth over the cab, maybe because the sw50r doesn't cooperate with the marshall cab very well or be dialed inproperly, even the clean sound is boxy and dark (not a bad way) like Mr.Chapman said. Maybe just me with poor monitors, the difference here is pretty obvious. Nevertheless the friedman is still awesome, I guess this is why Tosin Abasi choose the sw50r and be-od combo. The kemper with MB 5150 profile indeed sounds best to my ears, I guess it is more than enough to home players like me. I have to say Mr MB is a turely magician. fun video as always, Go Andertons !!!
Agreed, to my ears it was pure tubey bliss, couldn't believe he thought it was fake! I wonder if it sounds that much different on the recording vs. what he was hearing?
Rob's taste in tone is kinda weird IMO. He tends to favor heavily pronounced midrange that's also borderline muddy. He turns his nose up at anything with a hint of high end or clarity. I think he's just become accustomed to dialing in tones that sit well in a mix or work in a band setting.
Obviously Chappers only got some of them wrong to prove a point. DUH! But jokes aside, I have noticed that Chappers is fantastic with things like guitars, but I feel he maybe struggles with valve versus solid-state. He had a few slip-ups in the recent video too. That said, I have no doubt I would faaaaaail.
I think it's not because Chappers was bad in differentiating valve and ss. It's just now technology has come so far it's objectively hard to tell the difference.
Aldo Veraldi dunno. Maybe true. In fairness ofc, all the pedals were going through a valve head. Without running them into a daw, to bypass the power-amp, then pushing that through studio monitors with cab sim, which would give it away, or somehow pushing it through the 412 again it is ofc never going to be a fair test. The 5150 pedal straight into a daw with IRs actually sounds pretty decent imo.
Mark Seymour yet a lot of people love them. Although I haven't owned one I usually love the sounds they get out of them. They don't have a lot of character, but they sound very clear and perstine. I thought the Kraken was not set up right in this video, it sounded boring and thin.
Very entertaining as always! Rob is a fantastic guitar player! I would enjoy some of these blind shootouts with clean sounds and not the high gain sounds we’re used to hearing
Constructive criticism; it may make it easier for Rob to put on noise canceling headphones or earplugs during the switch. Instead of everybody screaming. Just a thought.

What does he have against the EVH 5150 III? He never likes it, but it always sounds so good and this is one of the most used metal amps from bands all the way from Steel Panther to Belphegor for several years.
Andy Young To be fair, he didnt set up the amp ^^
The EL34 one doesn't sound am that great to me. The 6L6 5150 III is an absolute beasty though.
Metal Head Productions I think it's just personal taste. I don't like Robs tone in general in these video's.
It helps bring to light what types of differences are noticeable and what isn't which is really interesting.
i think rob juts don't like the sound of a 6l6 tubes, 6l6 can sound a little fizzy in the top end it might create the perception that it is a digital amp.
iDeal
Which amp had 6L6's?
Didn't like the 5150 III EL34 either, so I think it's just a matter of dialing things in really. The Kemper wins with a specifically dialed in amp, almost like the ultimate setting possible. The Kemper is definitely on my wish-list, although I would prefer a combo (makes more sense in the home than a head/cabinet combo for me).
The Kemper has an advantage because it is an "ideal"almost post production circumstance instead of just an amp in the room .A fairer test would be from a control room in a studio with the gear in another room all played back through the monitors.
At 7:20 he says he's plugging in an amp
I noticed that too...
LOL, whether authentic or set up, these are still great fun to watch because the Anderton’s staff are a great cast of characters....and very talented ones for sure!😎🤙🏻
As a teacher (mathematics and computer science) I definetely need this Lee's t-shirt :) The link to "Buy a T Shirt" doesn't work btw.
Georg Mierau Go to the Andertons website. When you get there type T Shirt into the search box at the top of the page. Hit enter. Et voilà.
Glad to see these are back! (Cap and Chap)
This channel took a massive hit but I’m sure you guys exquisitely hilarious and informative videos for us fellow musicians will bring it back to where it belongs! Cheers from Houston, Texas🖖🏽🇺🇸
i think a shot of Bea's face at 19:30 would have been hilarious. Usually he does so much better than this.
It's always a joy to watch Chappers and the Captain!
This just shows you perfectly what all the talking of the tube fanboys is worth.
I thought the Kraken sounded really good!
Me too, that was super awkward
Agreed, to my ears it was pure tubey bliss, couldn't believe he thought it was fake! I wonder if it sounds that much different on the recording vs. what he was hearing?
Rob's taste in tone is kinda weird IMO. He tends to favor heavily pronounced midrange that's also borderline muddy. He turns his nose up at anything with a hint of high end or clarity. I think he's just become accustomed to dialing in tones that sit well in a mix or work in a band setting.
Yet another GREAT pedal from Strymon! 😮
Mark Seymour ha, I see your point. The other vid I mentioned above he didn't recognise his signature victory amp...
Mark Seymour addendum, he did think the kraken was a pedal, so I guess he didn't nail it ^^
I think it's not because Chappers was bad in differentiating valve and ss.
Oh poor chappers. We found something he can’t Id from across the room. This was balsy to post. Thank you guys :)
also what ive learned from all of these videos is that i should own a kemper.
Very entertaining as always! Rob is a fantastic guitar player! I would enjoy some of these blind shootouts with clean sounds and not the high gain sounds we’re used to hearing
That strymon sounded the best to my little ears
Andrew Crawley
Agreed Andrew, that Strymon did sound damn good!
Agreed, it's a favorite on my board for backline gigs.
Andrew Crawley
Had great mids in this vid.
Strymon is now doing distortion right too! Amazing company.
The new Emery album is all an AC30 boosted with a Riverside
Love hearing Rob riff through some Dorje material, Catalyst & Flower Of Life are my go-to’s when testing equipment now as well 😂
I think my favorite was the Victory Kraken
These blind challenges are my favourite. Good stuff.
I wonder if a high gain turkey would be true bypass ...
Frank Meffert Nah, it would be buttered.
Butter my muffin?
you would have to STUFF in the input....
Entertaining as always, gents. I think my favorite was the EVH 5150 head. That sounded awesome to me, but obviously that is to my taste.
Lee's "Kanye scatting" was more entertaining than the original thing.
This video just pushed me over the edge to buy the Strymon Riverside. Thanks!
Constructive criticism; it may make it easier for Rob to put on noise canceling headphones or earplugs during the switch. Instead of everybody screaming. Just a thought.
Matt Mckivigan that would be very boring sir.
One of your best and funniest reviews. Top marks guys
My hot coffee taste better with these cool guys 👍☕
