  • We got to spend some quality time with Robert Keeley at Guitcon in Markneukirchen, Germany. Robert is well known for his amazing compressor pedals. Here, he breaks it all down and explains exactly what's happening when you crank on the Keeley Compressor Pro and the Compression stage of the Tone Workstation.

    PedalsAndEffects,
Mr. Robert Keeley, Ladies & Gentlemen. THE engineer of today's most popular aftermarket compression pedals. Seriously, every self-proclaimed musician that records or uses powered equipment, would benefit from watching this video and hearing Robert Keeley's explanations on how to use compression. Most musicians I have known over the years, including myself, either don't have an ear for good compression, don't know what to use, or how to get it there. I have always used compression with my electric bass tracks, and thought I knew what I was doing. Well, I just learned a few things. Wonderful job PedalsAndEffects on using this format as an educational piece and not just a product demo or advertisement. Thanks a whole lot!!!!

Well done to the both of you... The questions were exactly what needed to be asked (not dumb at all) and the answers were clear and - to this guitarist of over 40 years - quite a revelation. Compression is one of those mysterious effects that you don't want to hear but can be vitally important to the sound and feel of guitar music. :-)

I really enjoyed hearing you both finally call out compression for being a shitty effect most of the time. That said, I use it, and I really appreciate what Robert does to dispel and enlighten the subject of compression here. Videos that show the good and bad of the tools we all use are much more valuable than those that simply say how amazing something is without any reference to context. Mahalo ~ tone

This video did it for me. At least a dozen other videos only gave me the gist. For 7 or 8 years, I haven't understood how my compressor was working in ableton, so I had to fiddle with it constantly to get it to respond how I wanted. Now the ratio/threshold interaction makes sense. I only started hearing people use the word "bloom" recently, and I didn't know what parts of the sound they were talking about. Now I get it.
    Thank you!

I think this is the best video I've seen on Pedals and Effects. It is good to see Nick play like he would actually play with his band. Something happening in this video that doesn't get mentioned is there is some clipping in the recording process. With the gain turned up on the compressor pro it causes clipping in the recorder. I suspect that there wasn't any actual clipping or distortion coming from the amp at all. The other thing that doesn't get mentioned in compressor discussions is you get compression in a lot of distortion pedals as a side effect of the distortion process. I think that is why compressors don't end up on pedal boards for high or medium gain guitarists. An exception would be if you use a clean sound. Then you could smooth out the peaks and apply makeup gain so your distorted sound and clean sound aren't radically different in volume. Thanks for this wonderful video.

Robert, what a fantastic education. You’re speaking my language, in succinct engineer speak, not marketing salesy speak when i disengage. I’m personally most interested in your new at NAMM 18 “Aria” Comp + O/D and specifically FX order, comp -> drive or drive -> comp.
I value your artist opinions as well,... Ross comp origins used by Phish’s Trey (shared with guitar buddy just last night) and Adrian Belew. Great stuff. I envision more Keeley products in my future. You’ve come a long way since your TS-808 mods. Here’s to your full 2018 high-quality yet affordable pedal lineup.

Robert Keeley is the real deal. The way he sets the compression for this guy is the way I've set my Boss CS-2 for years, mostly level with just a hint of compression. I now set my Keeley Compressor Plus the same way. I also have a Keeley modified Boss Super Overdrive that I've had for almost 20 years and it's the only dirt pedal I keep on my board.

Great video. Learned a lot from this discussion. The Pro version could really help with my cleanish sound when I'm soloing, though I wonder if I should wait for the combined sustain version of the pro Keeley referred to.
Question: Could this also help me to prevent excessive volume levels when I'm practising at home -- providing a consistently solid volume while cutting off any excessive peaks that would shatter the neighbour's windows?

I've wanted this video my whole life....another great use for the mxr style compressor is to make your tube amp act more like a tube amp at low volume....for instance, with my rockabilly trio we practice and play at our home base with a nice hearty volume...with my fender blues deluxe at around 4 or so...nice n loud, clean compression happening....when we play other places that are small or where people are wimps, they make us turn down, and my amp sounded like crap, and it would never feed back..which is part of my sound..with the mxr it's like a master volume for the deluxe....that's the main use I have for the compressor now,..but now I'm going to try some more applications...
