these amps really sounds great; the mix and mic setup is great. I have'nt tried valve/tube amps, only plugins and captures (they are expensive for a hobbyist). this video convinced me that plugins cannot sound like real tube amps
Then you didn't use the right ones, or the right settings with them or simply not as loud as they did in this video. There are so much more variables with dialing in a plug in or modeler then a tube amp. That's why it is generally harder to get a tone you love, but it is entirely possible nova days. Rob's ears and abilities remain impressive. I doubt he would do as well on different Makes of Cables/Leads Blind Test, but who knows how deep the Sonic Well of his keen hearing goes. Fun as always. Thanks
Definitely cool hearing these amps, was super impressed with that gunned Vox and the Marshalls, Orange and Soldano all sounded bloody killer as well but the Fender was interesting as well. That at least had a cool tone for some bluesy tones so I was pleasantly surprised with that one, all were great amps
The interesting thing about the 5150 line of amps is that they started as a Peavy and then wound up a Fender produced amp and yet the DNA is only slightly different sounding and requires a very discerning ear to tell the difference when the EQ is dialed properly. I have to say that my two favorite amps from this rundown were the 5150 and the Soldano. That is simply for the drive handling characteristics but if we were looking for a good clean tone I do love me some AC30 tones. Good show Rob your auditory palette is unrivaled good sir. I do agree it is time to put Lee in the blind man's seat and challenge his knowledge.
One of my favorite anecdotes about this is how Rob almost always started playing riffs/licks that were clearly connected to the gear he was playing to. You can clearly hear the connection and the idea that the gear is also inspirational and influential on the player and what they may decide to play/write! The OR30 had him drop-tuning and playing slower, grungier riffs, the SLO/5150 had him immediately gravitate to more metal-y stuff and Dorje riffs, more traditional rock stuff and leads on the JTM/Plexi/800
I’m in a motel in country Victoria Aus. My wife sleeping next to me. I have ear buds in on the lowest volume on my ear buds. That orange amp somehow had my earbuds clipping. Great video.

I love that guitar tone can be described in the same sentence as both “chewy and crunchy” at the same time, and all of us listening don’t even blink at that statement. Yup…Makes perfect sense. I know exactly what you mean, Chappers.
I played along and got three. Rob is a mad man. Nice work sir. Question is do you know your equipment history and could you do a blind non audio assessment based on possible specs, myth and lore alone? Belly up to the bar big fella. 😊
Next challenge suggestion: same budget guitar, but with different levels of kit (pickups, pots, etc). Perhaps stock and then keep adding 'the next step'. The Rob ranks them.
My final order was JCM800, Vox, Orange, Soldano, JTM, Fender, EVH, Plexi, so I mixed up the Fender and JTM. I was a lot less certain compared to the guitar blindfold challenge, which I was surprised about since I've listened to a lot of these amps and played them in-stores. However, I guess I'm normally playing very quietly in-stores, and some of them sound quite different cranked. I changed a lot of my answers as I went throughout, since some of them weren't clear until I had heard all of them. The Vox didn't sound too chime-y to me by itself, but after hearing the rest, it was clear that it was the most chime-y, and I wasn't sure if the fourth amp was the Soldano or the EVH until the end when it was clear that was the brightest, highest gain amp, locking it in as the Soldano in my mind. I thought the EVH would have sounded closer to the Soldano, but I think it sounded closer to the Marshalls. Also, I thought number five sounded very Marshall-y, so I was surprised that it was a Fender! I suppose early Marshalls were based on early Fenders, so it makes sense getting an early Marshall confused with a Fender. The Plexi reminded me of my DSM & Humboldt Silver Linings pedal with its fuzziness, and I know that pedal was going for a cranked Marshall with a fuzz into it, so they seemed to have nailed that! The Orange I briefly thought was an EVH, but after changing some of the settings, it was clear it had that thicker, wall-of-sound gain that Orange is known for, so I locked that in as an Orange (glad I found the Orange pretty quickly since my main amp is a CR60!).
35:30 - I love that they're doing this lately, ever since those "lunchbox" amps and all that, because I agree, it doesn't make any sense for most consumers in the world to have like 100W tube-amps and then having to run them low and not getting the saturation and thus "toan". - Not to mention the size and the weight. - And yea, there were combos already, but let's be fair, unless it's for certain music for which that's enough, they tend to not be up to getting the sound. - Myself I now opted for a 20 Watt power-amp and it actually starts to open up at about a third on the master, like you hear it go from a bit dark to that nicely saturated sound (even though it actually sounds pretty good lower than that as well). - At that point, it's on the loud side, but not unbearably so. And I've tried solid-state amps at that kind of volume or higher and they just sound kind of stale. So it seems also tube-driven signals, at lower wattages, into speakers, brings out a nicer or more impactful sound.
It’s funny with the EVH stuff, I hadn’t really seen it as relevant to me either. But recently I played an EVH guitar through a 5150, and it was really eye opening. Eddie knew what he was doing.
I like these videos a lot. Maybe as a future idea you could tell him all the amps/guitars/pedals whatnot apart from one. That way he'd have tougher time guessing but still have a proper shot at it
Ya know, I 100% get his saying the fender was too bright and brittle, ear piercing etc. I'm sensitive to that as well with amps. However, I loved how it sounded recorded. I bet the in the room sound vs what we heard through the recording is very different. The fender was great recorded.
This amps all sound different . Its noticable even through RUclips compression but he knew exactly a model. Orange and Marshal Studio. This 2 guesses are just crazy. How?))
Great video ! My amp can’t compete in this because it s a clean amp but i enjoy my roland jazz chorus 120 from the 80s with pedals very much. It’s so loud it s crazy! Probably louder then evh 5150
That plexi had a spongy sizzle type of sound that's very present on decaying notes that I hear a LOT in my Quilter problock 200. I use the Quilter as a clean pedal platform amp & wasn't sure what it's gain structure was supposed to be influenced by and... there it is. Very Interesting .
I once had the honor to play over Brain Mays official amp setup while auditioning for the WWRY Musical in Cologne. It was a supernatural godly sound and yes, during the casting, one of the tubes blew out (they had a backup of course) But omg the EVH clocking in at 105db. Had they used the 100W versions of all the amps, they would totally have suffered permanent hearing loss.
This isn't the real rob , this is an actor with no eyes who is fed a script by Lee a week before shooting. The real rob (with dreadlocks) was abducted by marshell aliens years ago but the video footage here is carefully manipulated.
I just wanna think Rob Chapman for single handedly proving wrong the content creators that say Pickups and amps dont matter to your sound only speakers.
No one seriously says there's no difference between pickups and amps - everyone understands there is a specific "house sound" to them. What people say is a few things, which are all true: That at heavy distortion levels, a good part of that house EQ matters less / That with a properly EQ'able setup, you can get a sound that is nearly indistinguishable from other pickups or amps of that type (no one says single coils sound like humbuckers or that a high gain amp sounds like a low gain one) / That for RECORDED music, changing the speaker in the cab and repositioning the mic will make a huge difference. Give someone a good pedal platform amp and let them put a couple of pedals in front of it and if they know what they're doing they'll be able to get a tone that's 99.9% similar to any other amp with similar gain staging, etc.
@@cthalupa6879 Yes they do. Glenn Fricker literally says that guitar pickups have no effect on the sound of a heavily distorted guitar track. He posts videos playing several different guitars with several different pickups ( while behind the scenes gain matching the recordings) claiming that the pickups have absolutely no tonal difference. He goes as far to say that after market pickups are a scam and waste of money.
@@shredenvain7 I watch Glenn and he has clarified this point multiple times across multiple videos. I would agree buying expensive aftermarket pickups is a waste of money. Once you get out of the basement tier of pickups you should instead spend that money picking up a good parametric EQ and learn how to use it instead of going for a big (in cost) pickup upgrade. You can chase whatever house EQ curve you want from a preferred pickup, plus all sorts of other applications.
@@cthalupa6879 Oh really because he has literally had arguments with me about the very subject in the comment sections of those videos. I told Glenn myself that I own several Ibanez 7 strings all with different pickups that all sound different and his response was for me to start a RUclips channel and record all the guitars to prove it! So if he "never made these claims" or "explained you could use post eq" then why the hell would he challenge me on the very assumption???
@@cthalupa6879 Glenn literally doesn't think there is a difference between a "basement pickup and a Duncan or DiMarzio! He argued with me about cheap low output pickups having a flubby low end. A pickup that is high output with scooped bass frequencies can work to push a preamp the same way a clean boost pedal does. Glenn is a rage merchant. He gets views by calling anyone that cares disagree with him and idiot!
Next challenge , we drop 4x12 cabinets on his foot, and he guesses what they are loaded with. I have a feeling he'd nail it.

He knows his stuff 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I own 4 of those amps ha ha ha!!! I do a wet dry rig with the EVH and the SV20H Plexi. It is GOLD!!!
That fender sounded SO good
You can always tell a Vox AC30- well I can as I have one 🙊🙊😮😮🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That plexi had a spongy sizzle type of sound that's very present on decaying notes that I hear a LOT in my Quilter problock 200. I use the Quilter as a clean pedal platform amp & wasn't sure what it's gain structure was supposed to be influenced by and... there it is. Very Interesting .
Decibel meter is having a field day haha
I once had the honor to play over Brain Mays official amp setup while auditioning for the WWRY Musical in Cologne. It was a supernatural godly sound and yes, during the casting, one of the tubes blew out (they had a backup of course)
But omg the EVH clocking in at 105db. Had they used the 100W versions of all the amps, they would totally have suffered permanent hearing loss.
Another great Chappers challenge. would have been fun to see you drop a Victory or a Bad Cat in there to mess with him a bit :P
"I would back it off ever-so slightly" *rolls it 3 whole notches off* lmao love it
But can he smell what the Rock is cooking?
12 chocolate chip pancakes
4 double dough pizzas
21 brownies
@@demoleramera don’t forget the shots of tequila.
And “spotty back” products.
It doesn't matter if he can smell it!
This isn't the real rob , this is an actor with no eyes who is fed a script by Lee a week before shooting.
The real rob (with dreadlocks) was abducted by marshell aliens years ago but the video footage here is carefully manipulated.
@LongLiveRockAnRoll somebody missed the joke, somehow.
Marshall still sounds amazing, and so musical.
Master Chappers does it again! 🧐🍾🥂
