    I really like the JMP-1. I love the interface. The treble and presence can overpower the bass, so go easy and dial it in at stage volume. Try adjusting eq only one number once your in your tonal ballpark.The cleans are very good with single coils and compress in subtle way with gain up. Also, I think the dirty sounds respond to the volume knob well. Stock ones sound pretty good in my opinion. To restore factory settings (18 is my fave), hold OD1 and CL1 with power off, then press the power button.

    I have JMP-1, 9200 and JFX-1 in my home in Europe, however since I don't live in the Europe for many years the gear is unfortunately just laying there and I miss it. I also had ADA MP-1 which had burnt PCB which I managed to make work, but since it was not that much reliable I gave it away. I really liked MP-1 chorused cleans, instant 80s sound and with Ibanez RG it can give you that Petrucci Pull me under chorused cleans.

    I've got one of these with a dead battery, so it really doesn't work right just now. I'm getting so much out of neural dsp plugins right now that it isn't worth the pain in the ass to find a tech who wants to fix up a 25 year old gadget. I have a JMP-1. It is basically a distortion pedal in a rack, none of the distortion is 'tube' it's diode based. That may be an issue, maybe not. The clean channel is actually all tube and is basically a blackface fender circuit. You'd be better off selling a jmp-1 and buying a better pre than paying for a Voodoo mod, unless you love the midi and the switching.

    • @BigHairyGuitars

      Not exactly right, both channels use one tube each. Tube swapping can make quite a difference. I have used a JMP-1 for at least 20 years. I have never felt the need to get it modded. Just follow the JMP-1 with a BBE and then into a DSL FX return or one of Marshall's EL34 power amps. All the other guitar players that hear my rig say the same thing, "dam that sounds good, what are you using?"

    • @redearthpaul178
      @redearthpaul178 4 года назад +3

      @@2550marshall the distortion channel use one tube stage and a cathode follower, essentially one tube stage. As at least 3 tube stages are needed for a distorted tone this is just for show...the distortion is generated by a bridge rectifier, in the same manner to a fuzz pedal. It isn't a 'tube' pre, it's described as a hybrid. I happen to build tube amps, so electronics is my thing! I'm sure changing tubes does affect the sound, if you like the sound that's all that matters.

    Unfortunately, I had to give $550 for my JMP-1, so with the Voodoo’s mod it would make the price $1850 + shipping, 😫. That’s just too much for me. One of the biggest complaints with this preamp is is the base noise level, if you have a late version model, Marshall added some power input filtering caps to help with that. The others don’t like that it’s hard to get this on the edge of breakup and use your volume to roll off the gain. That “may” be possible if running the JMP-1 into a tube power amp, YMMV.

    • @BigHairyGuitars
      @BigHairyGuitars  4 года назад +1

      Yeah. It's hard to stomach, when you can get an amazing full amp for that price. BUT... if you're a die hard JMP-1 lover. it's probably worth it.

    • @AnAmericanGuitarist
      @AnAmericanGuitarist 4 года назад +2

      I used one with the Marshall 9200 dual power amp for a very long time. I mostly used the highest gain setting and used my guitar volume knob to get a cleaner sound by rolling it back and it worked great for me, but if you're looking for a pristine clean sound then this method would still have a little too much dirt for you.. I made use of the midi for effects changes and EQ settings, but using this with a power amp adds a lot. At times I used the DI out for recording demos at home to a multi track cassette unit, but in a studio I always had the power amp, cab and a mic. You can also place an EQ between the JMP-1 and your power amp or place higher headroom delay and effects units there too. other effects worked better in the JMP-1 effects loop.

    Quick question for people using it. When I change patch I get 10-15ms of almost no sound. I checked with a sound editor and there is a kind of “hole” in the signal. Does it happen to you as well ? It is very annoying when entering a lead sound, cutes the energy of the first chord OR I have to anticipate the change 1/8th of a note before which is not ideal either. Same for you ?

    I have noticed that the one that have the CR2034 battery have a slight more lows/bass. The two JMP-1s have the same tubes (JJ Tesla)

    Why aren't the amp companies, namely Marshall, making tube preamps? For the home wanker/recording enthusiast who wants industry standard tube amp tone, it seems like a need. Or is it because a head like the JVM functions exactly like a preamp with emulated out? I think I just answered my own question. But a preamp only would be cheaper. JVM preamp, please.

      @@MrGul that sounds awesome. I’ve seen a few vids of Marshall heads he modded and they sound amazing. Does he let people in the US send JMP-1’s in for the mod?

      @@jakedibiase7404 I actually don't know for sure if he does, but I'm willing to bet that he does if you pay for the shipping costs. Another possibility could be to have it done with a Swedish acquaintance/middle-man, should Tommy for some reason refuse international shipping.
