  • A low maintenance 'Larry Hall Growing Method' was adapted to grow edible ginger. The crop only needed my attention during the setup and harvesting stages. The automatic watering system worked flawlessly throughout the cropping period.

    R.I.P. Larry Hall! Larry was ahead of his time. Plus a large heart to share his ideas with the internet community.
    Just like you Dr. Kratky, sharing you knowledge to help others!

      Larry Hall called and we had a pleasant and informative phone conversation about a month before he passed away. His ideas and experiences reached many people and countries and I have great respect for him.

    What a wonderful video. Thank you so much for showing us your results with ginger. It certainly is relaxing to watch ginger being washed :)

    This was very cool and impressive. But I still think a method using zero media will be the key to commercial success. Then there is less washing of the harvest. The savings on labor and cost of media may compensate for the possibly reduced yield.

      Yes, zero medium is a worthwhile goal to shoot for. Hopefully, someone will develop a method to successfully grow ginger without growing medium. We attempted it in this study -
      www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/hawaii/downloads/Experimental%20Non-Circulating%20Hydroponic%20Methods%20for%20Growing%20Edible%20Ginger.pdf but yields were lower than with growing medium, sprouting was slower and rhizomes were small and knobby.

    Nice haul of ginger! Congrats. Larry Hall was inspirational to me as well. Great explanation of how to combine all the parts too. :O)

    Some of the UH tomato seeds have great starts but for outdoors hydro the sun and heat of summer ruins the skin for me. Hoping before the hotter weather arrives some new plants will produce some good tomatoes.

    We're going to try an indoor/outdoor experiment growing ginger on Joshua Zieba channel soon in cold Michigan. I like how you do it!

    Have you tried using tephra as grow medium? I am very interested in using recently produced volcanic tephra as a grow medium. Thank you for all your research!

      I think what you call 'tephra' is what we call volcanic cinders. Cinders can work, but they might get caught in the cracks and crevices and be difficult to wash out.

    So that means ginger never really grows on only water with nutrient solution like other plants?

    • @growkratky5558
      @growkratky5558  3 года назад

      Ginger will grow without growing medium on elevated, upside-down nursery trays above nutrient solution, but the yield was much lower than when growing medium was used. www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/hawaii/downloads/Experimental%20Non-Circulating%20Hydroponic%20Methods%20for%20Growing%20Edible%20Ginger.pdf
