Tele Opinions I only use fresh ginger in the kitchen. Use it in soup, cut a piece maybe just about half an inch, then pound it slightly to break it, drop in the water to boil. Good especially with fish and chicken to remove that smell. You don’t have to eat it. 😊

This is the video that inspired me to start gardening... my first ginger plant was in a 1/2 liter tupperware with no holes and clay soil. I planted it in January (cold, but I'm from the tropics, so 12-15C cold). I overwatered it coz I had no idea what an inch of water meant, and it obviously died. From then till now I've grown water spinach, malabar spinach, ginger, cucumber, okra, garlic and onion leaves, lemongrass, sweet potato, spring onion, culantro, ixora (regular and dwarf), cape jasmine, lantana, crape jasmine, mustard, cilantro, and flat beans, all in about six feet of my backyard. I had Covid in April, and I also found gardening a way to relax and take my mind off things. So thanks a bunch for inspiring me to take up gardening. :D

I plan to try growing my own ginger. What I've done in the past is buy a bunch of ginger, peel it with a knife (easier than a peeler) and then chop it in small cubes, then put them through my wheat grass juice extractor. I freeze small glass jars with this juice that I use for my morning anti-inflammatory tea.

My ginger plant is growing great! One thing I discovered, however, is that the ginger root that you buy at a grocery store is sprayed with something that prevents it from sprouting! So I bought my initial root to plant at a natural foods market where I was certain it was organic and free of any kind of spray. It was the first time I was able to successfully grow a beautiful plant! Thanks for the great video!

@@skyspring7704 I don't know but I would assume that it penetrates into the ginger somewhat to prevent the sprouting. I don't think I would bother even trying anything but an organic piece of ginger root since I had no luck before with anything I purchased at the store. The organic piece I bought at the nature's market sprouted right away and is doing beautifully so I would always stick with that!

    Notes
    - Ginger exported from Asia.
-We harvest the rhizome, which is the underground stem. We harvest the main stem of the plant.
    - If buying ginger at the grocery store look for eyes. The larger the rhizome chunk the faster you’ll get your ginger. New growth comes from those “eyes”
larger chunks create more sprouts, because there are enough areas for the shoots to come out. The more shoots creates more shoot development up top and more root grow down below, which means more photosynthesis which is more energy and more growth and getting ginger faster.
    - Ginger stalks grow horizontally in one direction. A wide shallow pot is better than narrow deep pot for growing ginger.
    - Use high quality soil that’s loose rich and organic.
    - You can prèspout ginger in bowl of water or plant ginger straight in and add water.
    - Ginger is not like standard root crop like potato (would plant deep) simply add ginger and cover 1/2 inch over soli
    - Add ginger and water it in.
    - - To understand where to place ginger where did it come from?
    - Came from Southeast Asia - tropical, rainfall, moist, heat, humidity.
    - Start in Spring, or indoors if not good weather.
    Problems
    - Brown tips - soil is not moist enough,
Yellow - lack of nutrients, add fertilizer
Soggy and Rotting - too much water
    Flowers - Normal, edible also
    Harvesting
    - If in dry are- add mulch to hold in moisture
    - first harvest 4-5 months
    - before frost harvest all of it.

I had a bunch of ginger rhizomes in a bowl on my counter last summer (not in Florida) and really wasn't using it much for what ever reason so it was neglected let's say. I start seeing all these sprouts! I'm excited trying to figure out how to plant them and grow them... finally! There was no water in that bowl they were in on my counter btw. So I planted the sprouting rhizomes...I water very little and they are growing beautifully. All by 'accident'... can't wait for the harvest.

I live in a sub-tropical region in South Africa and have been growing ginger for a few years now for own use.
    Your advice is spot on.
Mine is planted outside in a shallow long garden bed in semi-shade / sun. Lots of organic compost aided by some cow manure and very occasionally some commercial fertilizer.
It does flower and grows quite vigerously.
I harvest once a year after the plants die back slightly and then immediately re-plant for the new season.
    Very rewarding.
Thank you for the info. on making the powder. Am I correct in assuming that you 115 deg. temperature recommendation was deg F ? and not, as we use here, deg. C.?

I love gardening since I was a child. most of them were herbs. I didn't know back then about what plant need full /partial sun. I throw anything on my garden under mango tree (shady) most of them that grow up well were local herbs like galangal, turmeric, ginger, sweet potatos. I didn't even watering. they were grown more than we need so my mother plugged them off (harvest) and I cried out loud.

Except for harvesting the rhizome and what it looks like pulling the plant out of the pot: we don't get to see what that looks like our how he prefers to cut stems and clean the rhizome. Also, whether or not to expect grocery ginger to be sprayed with chemicals and what to do about it... whether all grocery ginger can be guaranteed to be the same variety or which differences we might expect to find (maybe at Asian markets). Any suggestions on potentially more forgiving, cold-hardy, or dwarf varieties. A quick word or caution about what to expect if someone lets it loose in their yard rather than a pot might have been useful...

@@calciumchloride710 It's so sad that your ears don't function (or need to be cleaned out) and that you've lost the ability for critical thinking.
      1) He very plainly showed the "eyes" you look for in the grocery store on the ginger you buy. If there are "eyes", you can use them to grow. Take a field trip to the produce section of your favorite grocery store. If the ginger is nice and plump...and not shriveled...you will likely find "eyes". BTW...this goes for turmeric, too.
      2) He very plainly said that ginger is a TROPICAL PLANT. If you live in Zone 1-8 in the USA, you aren't even considered "sub-tropical". The ONLY places you m-i-g-h-t be able to plant this in the ground in the USA and not dig it up for winter storage--again, he SAID the part about winter storage very clearly--is in far south Texas and Florida...and possibly some parts of Arizona and San Diego area...zones 9-10.
I live in Zone 8b, and while I planted both ginger and turmeric outside in April, I fully know I will need to bring them in at Thanksgiving.
      3) He was planting his ginger in a pot...which would be the same for ANY tropical houseplant...you can put them outdoors in the summer but they MUST come inside during the winter.
