Rob Bob's Backyard Farm & Aquaponics How long do the frozen ginger blocks keep? I think you forgot to mention it because I've watched it a few times and don't hear/see it.
Hi Elizabeth. I found some ion the freezer that were over 12 months old last year. They looked a bit frosty but I just rinsed that off & tossed it in the stirfry. I think if they were frozen then sealed in a vacuum pack they could last for a number of seasons. Hope that helps you out some. Cheers & have a top one.
Absolutely. I really want to try all these, do you drink 🍸 a shot of vodka before/while working? Hs ha now I’m interested in a dehydration machine. I’m not sure I’d use it.
Fantastic info, thank you!! After building and planting up wicking beds I finally have good crops of ginger.. Yes!!!!! I love these ideas, thank you so much :). They will all be used, but the frozen mashed slurry crafted into frozen, snap-able ice cubes is perfect!! 🙏
Thank you for the ginger storage tips. Just what I need! This is an excellent video to store n preserve them. Our supplies of ginger both from our own garden n from the green grocers come irregularly. So when I get them it's great to be able to store n use over several months. I love gingers. Thanks for making this helpful video Rob. 👍 A bloke at work just gave me a bag full of fresh ginger, and I was looking for some ideas for ways to store it so none goes to waste. I decided to go with your paste & freeze method, got it in the freezer now in icecube trays, and in the next day or two I'll vacuum seal the ginger cubes in small batches and put back in the freezer. Whenever I open a vacuum sealed bag I'll just put the remainder of the batch into a ziplock bag in the freezer until I need to open another vacuum sealed bag.

Excellent vid !!! I'd put ginger root in the ground and had forgotten about it... it grew very tall, with lots of tapering shoots. Thought it was lily and over the winter.. I cut the shoots off and had put a pot holder on it... its back again this year and growing nicely. The leaves smell heavenly too. I'll definitely be harvesting some this year and leave some in the ground for next year :) Really hope I don't do too much damage to it.
I love that your videos are so informative and straight to the point! For freezing ginger pulp, I measure it in teaspoons and then freeze it in a small ice cube tray so I have perfectly measured cubes!
Date: Tue, 26 May 2020 21:52:28 -0400 Subject: Re: Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm loves your comment Peace Rob: The videos are great and easy to watch! These tutorials give simple insight into materials, methods, and applications... Wow! Including the underlying humor, embedded into the talks, the instructive nature of the presentations give individuals a chance to learn through replicating your demonstrations, techniques, and learning through trial and error... So, as someone who was exposed to getting my fingers into the dirt during my youth, partially growing up on my relatives' farms, working in the fields, harvesting, helping to set up urban gardens, vest pocket parks, suburban gardens, and house plants, planting my own successful gardens, composting with my dad (decades ago), and visiting botanical gardens, all of that falls within the domain of why I admire those that cultivate plants etc. Furthermore, I've just been around that element since I've been born! God-willing, I'll be starting some ginger soon...! Keep it up... Glad I clicked on your site... Much Appreciated, Mate! Warm Regards, Jamal PS: *"Stay Green"*
Helpful instructions. Thank you so much! I think I’ll try the dehydration method first and store the chips in an Infinity jar. Next time I plan to try the freeze method you recommend’ making pulp first.

Fantastic! My family and I use a of ginger for cooking additives, and medicinally. It's a wonderful, aromatic plant with dynamic culinary, and healing properties. Thanks so much for the information on planting, growing, and harvesting the plant rhizome. The first time I randomly grew some, I was amazed at the fragrance, that was unexpectedly produced! I'd grown it in my apartment at the time...We live in the U.S. regional S.E. (Northern Most) . Growing year round has its challenges. Really useful information. I'll try my hand it this again, as the season grow warmer. I make it into a drink, and use it all year round. It has both cleansing, and warming properties that help the body to purify, and it's also antibacterial. The information was great. Thumbs Up "Down Under"
For some reason my reply didn't stick. 🤔 We used to make a lacto fermented ginger beer here but haven't done so for a few years as we moved out of the house while renovating. I've since found all my bottles & brew drum & am looking at making some up with the upcoming harvest here. Thanks again Jamal & I hope you get a bumper crop from yours. Cheers & happy growing.
Way Cool! For now, I just concoct a ginger drink to which I add lemon, a dash of turmeric, honey to taste, and a tad of vitamin C. Not being funny, but as I was typing, I was noshing on a piece of natural mastic ginger-flavored chewing gum. To the regular palate, it ain't ya comercial gum, man! Minimally sweet for about 1 min., has no dyes, and a lot of nothing else... Got a sore throat? Ginger chews, or a piece of hard ginger candy helps... Ginger makes a good gargle, breath freshener, and/or rinse for the head.. a bit diluted...let alone a hot-toddy of natural ginger and lemon tea or drink... for a cold, upset stomach, will help expel gas, ... or just to get the chill off, man (..and woman). It can be used as a natural [non-toxic] stimulant in that regard, and it's heat producing. Ginger is a natural motion-sickness aid! This is some good stuff! My family used this herb before, and since I was born. When I grew older, I learned more about it, and really appreciated its wonderful medicinal / herbal properties. Through long years, my family and I have sampled different types of Ginger Beer. Properly homemade ginger beer is way up there, but as far as the commercial brew goes: [for us] "Bruce Cost" produced here stateside, looms large, right now. Then there are a slew of competitors, old and new... You know how it goes. Some are so-called designer elite stuff, not worth the cap on the bottle [taste likes dishwater], while others are plain, simple, and usually pleasant tasting... Now, the benefits, the ingredients, and the preparation claims...Hummm! So, as far as homebound local ingredients, I know what I'm putting in mine, for my good pleasure, and for what benefits are derived therefrom. Finally, I've tasted samples of those who say they mixed up something, but on trying some, it was too darn strong, or it tasted like soap! And ...you get the drift. Way back when (precisely, a little over 5 decades ago), I used hair pomade with ginger in it, kinda pleasant, fragrant, cleansing, and invigorating. Other cosmetics, like salves used ginger as a main ingredient, and there was even ginger and clove-laced incense... Wow... Ver-sa-ti-li-ty! and the Ancients all over the earth, knew about ginger's wonderful properties! Good to hear from you Bob! You and your family be well, be safe! Peace, Jamal

Hello Rob and Hi to Lizzie, We love your videos, thank you.Ginger is one of our favourite herbs, because of they have great medicinal values and excellent tastes. Thanks for all the good tips about preserving ginger. 👍🙏🏽😁
Just wanted to let you know that we lost Lizzie to old age at the end of 2020. 😓 We miss her a lot but think her last few years with us were much better that she would have had in the pound. Don't feel bad for not knowing. I know how hard it is to keep up with folks I follow on RUclips. Cheers & thanks for thinking of her. 😁
Awesome video. I can only really speak for myself, but your videos give me insight into what it's like to grow your own food, and how you might use it. Living in a city that has pretty extreme weather throughout the year, without a pretty substantial greenhouse, it is difficult to grow your own food. Your channel gives me access to this kind of information. I also find the most interesting videos are those which you show us what you do with your produce. It is fine and dandy to harvest 100 lbs of ginger, but can you use 100 lbs of ginger, is the other question!
This is a fantastic channel and So helpful. I love it! You have answered so many of my vegie gardening questions. Thankyou for your efforts in producing these videos. Can I ask where your farm is? you refer to "those of you in cooler climates" and I wonder where you are referring to? Im on Mornington Peninsula..would you call that a cooler area?
Ah yes I grow some every year here in Virginia. You and Jeff H are my ginger mentors. I was quite slow getting started this year but it is up and growing and some will be transplanted into grow bags this week. I am hoping to prevail on my neighbor with a new hoop house to prolong my growing season. .. I do love to make candied ginger for Xmas and ginger syrup which I use all year. I am psyched about the tumeric powder idea. Last year my daughter made me curry powder using my coriander seeds. Hopefully this year I can also use my tumeric. Greetings from Virginia USA.
Hi Bonny. Did your neighbour end up letting you borrow some space in their greenhouse? Hope you get a good harvest from your containers. 👍 Ginger syrup is one thing we haven't tried here yet & hope to grow enough this coming season to have a crack at a batch. Will be planting out our next ginger crop this weekend if all goes well. Cheers & happy growing.
just wrap it in an old t-shirt put it in a wicker basket in a closet for the winter, plant it last winter in a pot and put in your window, stick outside after the last frost of the year. our winters up here are damn near 8 months, you can not let any ind of root vegetable stay in the ground up here. Been growing my ginger for 5 years now, I use them for a ginger juice drink, a bit og ginger pulp, some lemon a little sugar, and yummie
That works well in dry cooler climates. 👍 Far too humid to do that here& we found that the roots tend to go a bit mouldy in a few months when stored in the pantry. Cheers Nicole & happy growing. 🌱🌱
Thankyou for the advice this is my first time growing ginger. Please can in ask if stored in plant pots over winter do u still water it or not? thankyou shaz ;-)
I put my ginger paste into plyable egg trays. No cutting that way! once they're frozen (usually overnight) I turn them out and put them in freezer bags. I usually measure it out before putting it in, and since I usually use it in no less than 1/2 tsp amounts, that the amount I measure out. Then all I have to do is take out the number which corresponds to the recipe I'm cooking. I do the same with broth and soup base. It also can be done with some types of masala for certain Indian dishes, and the various pastes used in Thai recipes. It makes the process of cooking so easy that it can't be beat. There's nothing like throwing a few cubes, some spices, and the protein of your choice into an Instant Pot and having dinner ready in ten or fifteen minutes. A little extra work now makes for nice lazy days later, and especially when you need them when time is short.
I am in Canada and I havest mine early November. And I need to replant the next year's batch at the end of January, so I only need to keep it 2 months in the crisper. Anything else for consumption is frozen in pulp.
Good job on the Lizzie girl, good choice by the looks of her,i'll throw a ball at him until he takes me for a walk, loveable young human.... plus great info as usual, digging up my ginger at the Mo, looking good, happy wee jock, as usual...

Cheers & have a top one.
I agree I'm grateful too😊 he's great isn't he!
I love that your videos are so informative and straight to the point! For freezing ginger pulp, I measure it in teaspoons and then freeze it in a small ice cube tray so I have perfectly measured cubes!
Am glad you found it helpful NS.

Peace Rob:
The videos are great and easy to watch! These tutorials give simple insight
into materials, methods, and applications... Wow! Including the
underlying humor, embedded into the talks, the instructive nature of the
presentations give individuals a chance to learn through replicating your
demonstrations, techniques, and learning through trial and error...
So, as someone who was exposed to getting my fingers into the dirt during
my youth, partially growing up on my relatives' farms, working in the
fields, harvesting, helping to set up urban gardens, vest pocket parks,
suburban gardens, and house plants, planting my own successful gardens,
composting with my dad (decades ago), and visiting botanical gardens, all
of that falls within the domain of why I admire those that cultivate plants
etc. Furthermore, I've just been around that element since I've been born!
God-willing, I'll be starting some ginger soon...!
Keep it up... Glad I clicked on your site... Much Appreciated, Mate!
Warm Regards,
Jamal

Thanks for the kind words Jamal. 👍😊
I am thinking about add ginger to my garden this spring
Hope it does well for you Viola.
Happy growing.
Thanks for your great clips about ginger and tumeric. We're growing it in the much cooler climate in Wales.
Helpful instructions. Thank you so much! I think I’ll try the dehydration method first and store the chips in an Infinity jar. Next time I plan to try the freeze method you recommend’ making pulp first.
We still have a few dried chips for a couple of seasons ago as backup here Gloria. They will keep for years if you can keep the moisture out or vacuum seal them.
Chewers & have a top one.
awesome clip Rob. l planted ginger last summer and it took off. l wanted to get another season out of it before lifting it so know l know its all good. one thing l never knew is how devine the aroma on the leaves were
Have seen a few folks use the leaves & stems in cooking as well Steve. 👍 Do you have them in the containers?
Hope all's well with you mate.

Yes!!
Just a little question ...
Can I cut the ginger in big slices to put into the Vodka? So I can take one slice when needed
@@elieli2964 That's what we've done in the past. Also makes for a delightful drink once the gingers all used up. 😉
Thanks Bob!
Best explanation ever, thank you very much, Rob. (Beautiful Liz)
Thanks Sc120o.
She definitely is one of the best fury family members we've ever had. Never leaves my side through the day.

We used to make a lacto fermented ginger beer here but haven't done so for a few years as we moved out of the house while renovating.
Peace,
Jamal
@@jamalabdul-karim3172 Hey Jamal. Would you care to share your ginger beer recipe? I was going to follow this one this time round,

Excellent suggestions 😊! Thanks very much 😘
I'm glad the growing & processing clips have helped you out some Maria. 👍
Hope you get a great harvest for your plants.

Hello Rob and Hi to Lizzie, We love your videos, thank you.Ginger is one of our favourite herbs, because of they have great medicinal values and excellent tastes. Thanks for all the good tips about preserving ginger. 👍🙏🏽😁
Thanks Zippy. 😁
Just wanted to let you know that we lost Lizzie to old age at the end of 2020. 😓
We miss her a lot but think her last few years with us were much better that she would have had in the pound.
Hi Bobby & thanks mate. Whereabouts do you live if you don't mind me asking?
Cheers & happy growing.
Wow!thanks for the video I have learnt a lot on how to store ginger .will keep watching more of your videos 😀
Am glad you found it interesting Sophie. 👍
Cheers & all the best.
Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm Thankyou😊
Thanks for keeping your video's on point and informative. :)
Glad you like them Helen.
Have a top one.
Hey There!
Just planted some ginger, and getting ready to prepare some ginger juice. Your cite is a gem! Thanks!
With Zest,
Jamal
Nice one Jamal. I'll be harvesting our ginger soon as I need to get the bed ready for the next crop.
Happy growing.
These are some great tips to store ginger! :) Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you so much Sir for a great video. Very well explained.
Am glad it helped you out some Joy. 👍
Ginger syrup is one thing we haven't tried here yet & hope to grow enough this coming season to have a crack at a batch.
Far too humid to do that here& we found that the roots tend to go a bit mouldy in a few months when stored in the pantry.
That's a great tip MD. Thanks for that. 👍😁
I am in Canada and I havest mine early November. And I need to replant the next year's batch at the end of January, so I only need to keep it 2 months in the crisper. Anything else for consumption is frozen in pulp.
I like to make Ginger Wine particularly mixed w/ Cherries. It pairs quite well w/ Indian Cuisine.
Have never tried to make a wine but have made ginger beer with it.
Cheers.
Good job on the Lizzie girl, good choice by the looks of her,i'll throw a ball at him until he takes me for a walk, loveable young human.... plus great info as usual, digging up my ginger at the Mo, looking good, happy wee jock, as usual...
😀She's trained us well Johnnie 😉
