      Hi. Im in Houston and we tend to go through very rainy seasons. Sometimes I cover the soil in my large containers with blue tarps I buy from the Dollar Store, just wrap it around the trunk and close with cheap clothes pins or whatever. The water runs off. Not for long term use as the tree soil needs to dry between waterings but helps prevent root rot. Good luck with your trees.

    • @lyonheart84
      @lyonheart84 3 года назад

      @@toosense gets a bit impractical for me to cover the soil as I have around 50 frost hardy fruit trees growing in containers outdoors ( fortunately they tend to be wet resistant) plus another 40 to 50 sub tropical and tropical fruit plants but I bring them indoors in winter so of course they are not exposed to our continuous rain. Unfortunately we dont get the wonderful heat you get in Houston 😎😁

  • @dandeleona4760

    Take a long screwdriver and stab the soil, then twirl it around until you make a channel through the root system. Good way to get water closer to inner roots without injuring them ... they move aside ... and a good way to add amendments dissolved in water . Soil should have 32% oxygen to finish the nitrogen cycle, so these channels work well when they dry out to get oxygen down to roots and microbes busy with the nitrogen cycle.

      Yay, I'm so happy to hear you are growing fruit trees even if you have to bring them in for the winter. I can see this happening if you keep your trees inside. Im sure you dont water often while their inside. How often do you water them inside the house?

    • @dasledogg64
      @dasledogg64 3 года назад

      Last year I made the mistake of watering it every 5 days and it dropped all the leaves, before bouncing back and blooming. This year I have the room set around 75° and have a humidifier going too and I water about every 10 days. No major leaf drop this year, but it hasn't bloomed yet. Any suggestions?

    • @GardenloveHomestead
      @GardenloveHomestead  3 года назад +1

      @@dasledogg64 yes I can see that. When their indoors they need water less often. I would just give it a good fertilizer. Once thw weather is is right and you take it outside I would fertilizer once every 5 to 6 weeks. And have a good watering schedule and check soil in between. MULCH MULCH MULCH 🙂

    After the Arctic Frost killed a bunch of my citrus trees I bought a few more and had them in containers. I planned to keep them there for the next year BUT I couldn't resist and ended up planting them in the ground. If we get another freeze next winter I'm going to be so mad. Lol They are super happy for now and putting on new growth, the leaf miners haven't found them YET. Every year that is a problem for me even though I use neem oil and other sprays. Any recommendations?

    • @dunedainmom
      @dunedainmom Год назад

      Next winter, fill up a 55 gal barrel with water and put it behind the tree (north of the tree). The water will absorb sunlight during the day and release heat at night, keep the tree from freezing. Maybe even tie the tree to the barrel. Helps keep it warmer
