Not saying I’m a professional gardener but I have had great success here in Georgia (USA) growing mangoes and other fruit trees. I have small trees in large pots and they grow great and will eventually grow into the pot in time. As for soil, it’s simple,I use peat moss, soil conditioner, manure, compost and top soil. You can’t go wrong with these basic ingredients and it’s cheaper than those fancy fertilizers and other products that are sold by these RUclipsrs.
I sprinkle very small amounts of 10-10-10 on top of the soil making sure it is close to the edge of the container then I apply leaves for on top of the soil mixture and tree for water retention. The leaves will break down and become compost.
The tree will become a dwarf and stay a certain size depending on the size of the container. Also throw in some worms on top of the leaves and they will burrow into the container and thrive creating castings every day.
With this method, you don’t spend a lot of money and the soil will retain moisture as well as creating a microorganism utopia in the container.
TY for this! I’m in Alabama and was looking for this type of advice for my zone. I want to plant peach, lemon and cherry trees 🌳
where in GEORGIA?
Regarding putting a small plant in a huge pot, the opposite is true. The center stays too wet. You will think the soil is dry and you will keep adding water, depriving the roots of oxygen and risking root rot.
Firehouse Subs sells their food-safe 5 gallon pickle buckets for only $2 to help fund their fire department program. They are labeled with the recycle triangle #2 HDPE- High Density Polyethelene. This is a very inexpensive way to get a hold of large, food-safe buckets for your garden if available in your area. Firehouse is located in 46 states and their website has a zip code locator. Hopefully this info will be helpful to my fellow gardeners.
SaguaroSunset I use those firehouse pickle buckets to grow potatoes!
holy cow... you just made my year.
link to Firehouse Subs containers?
Jesus this guy is so ex-military lol
I never thought I'd learn so much in less than 10 minutes until watching this video. Thank you so much!
Phenomenal. I've been growing veggies in pots for years but this is my first year trying fruit trees. Thanks for the video.
We've actually been growing mangoes in containers for almost a year now, up here in Canada! It's wonderful to see how they grow!
whats the update on your mango tree?
Update us please
I planted bare root figs in 20's. Had crazy feeder root growth and solid height growth. Moved them down to 15's and they broke bud. Something I learned by accident.
Can you grow pawpaw in containers? Or do they eventually need to move to ground soil?
Great video! I live in NC and would love to plant a TA tree. Question - if it gets to big, to switch to another pot or move to garage during winters?
Shamus, What if my mango plant roots start growing into the ground? Can mango roots break rock walls if they are planted to close?
Love from India learning a lot from ur video s thank you
PLEASE do a video about what to feed your plants in container and when to do ...
Hi Shamus, with your scheduled feeding do you use worm casting, azomite and foliar feed all at the same time or do you space each differently? Trying to time all feedings at once. Also, what is the brand for 7-5-4 monthly feedings?
+L. E. Same time. Harrell's
Not sure if I missed it, but how do you prevent the tree from outgrowing the largest pots you can handle without equipment? Is pruning sufficient to limit the size of the root ball?
Cut the container get bigger one and do same thing
Thank you so much! I just replant my. Mango tree again after I watch your show. I got it 3 days ago.

Hi jake
I watch all your videos.
In one video I saw your Moringa Tree, loaded with pods.
Asian in India and all over the world love these pods.We make vegitarian curry from these pods, and also curry from moringa flowers.I live in london born in Tanzania(lived in tanzania for 28 years and then moved in UKsince last 42 years.
In London Moringa pods are sold for £4 a kilo in asian food stores. You should try to sell some to Asians.
This tree is also very easy and quick to grow from a branch, just stick a large branch in ground and in 6 months you will have another Moringa tree, much quicker then from seed. You can also do air layering.
Q
Why do not you grow trees in air pruning pots? In that case you would not neex to care so much about changing sizes so often and make first 4 inch rule and right after that place tree to relatively big pot.
Hi, great video. I have just purchased a grafted mango tree. It only has 1 main trunk but lots of leaves. When can I expect it to develop branches?
Sorry for the silly question, but how will I know when the tree needs to be transplanted into a bigger pot?
What about apple, peach, oranges and plums can you grow those in containers?
There is no real difference other than your in control a little more to a degree.
I grow my fruit trees in 300l bins on wheels so I can move them If I want.
Wonderful root training and way of underweight useful compost. Thank you mamu.
When he said " vegan athelete" I had to check the upload date and realized it's 2016 lol, you get a pass.
would you ever prune the root ball to keep the tree in a 15-25 gallon container?
Thank you so much this video was very informative and helpful

Question: I have a mango tree about 9 feet tall in the pot, should I cut it at ten feet all?
What is the difference between compost and composted mulch? I'm from Spain and there is no composted mulch at any nursery. I only find compost. Thank you so much.
This was an excellent and very informative video guys. Thank you for sharing!

I am doing experiments on mango plants and orchards in Pakistan
That Mango Tree in a pot will have a limited amount of fruits to bear due to the root limited space. Best to plant on the ground.
Shimada Son your right but this is good for houses that does not have any spaces.
Would you please list out the name of the soils, where do we get them
dear sir what size grow mango plant in a pot best size of pot what.
What do you feed the tree during the regularly scheduled feeding? Worm castings? Compost tea? I currently just got a lime tree, but I plan on getting a mango and an avocado tree.
+vidiesel Worm castings , foliar feed, 7-5-4 monthly, 18-6-8 nutricote 2x year
Any recommended fertilizer brands?
Why dont you just directly use a 25gal container when it still sprouting rather than transfering everytime it grows?

I'm in Florida and picked up a choquette from the local nursery. I'm planning on introducing it to mother earth(yard) on the first or second week in March when last frost has come and gone. Do I just added some gypsum to the soil in my yard plus the soil it had with it already. No need for new soil right? Fertilizer? From what I read loosening up the dirt around roots is ideal since this thing has been in a container. HELP ME I'm so lost.
Hmm 7 yrs ago. So much has changed and learned with container planting. Can definitely grow a lot of trees he mentioned not to nowadays
Nice work brother i wish i was better prepared so I could have had all my trees outside for the winter.

Thank you for sharing how to grow fruit tree in pot, can you share your recipe of your soil, thanks
it's gonna be hard to move that 25 gallon tree in the winter
Im not sure if your soil is right... should put the mulch on the side of pot on top but not by the roots! it will kill the roots for some fruit trees
guys...

Nothing except -(300$ + transportation)=fresh fruits..........
Hi i always thought sand increased drainage & humus & composted material helped to retain & retard loss of moisture. Plus where do you get those 65 gal pots?
Hi, Great post. When planting a 25lt Hass Avocado and Mango in a 50 ln a container in Israel. Should I add some compost and fertilizer to the container bottom and mix it in the soil a bit? I have heard that it may be too strong for a container since the roots are limited to where they can go, and the tree could burn out. on the other hand I want nice fruit and the tree to grow. What's your take?
He is one hundred percent right about lava related substrate being used
What about papayas? Can they thrive in containers?

When does the tree start to flower,,does it have Flower cycle or does it flower with age???

Shamus are those trees now around 600 to 900???
It is indian tree but you grow it temperate region. Good.
Hello Shamus, can you grow avocado In a pot?
Avocado is growing big and it should grow into the ground.
does anyone know of any sites for getting free seeds to start growing with?
GODADDY says the website is parked. What happened to it?
Shamus if you would... would it be okay to use compost in a pot if you have allowed your soil mix that you plan to use to sit over a year or so in a container, to allow the compost to burn up? I'm simply curious and like I said..I've never grown a tree and you obviously know how to grow trees. I'm just wondering if you've ever tried allowing your mix to sit over a year or two in a sealed container(to keep nutrition in) and used that? Thank you very much for sharing these videos. I appreciate it.

I need to order a mango from Seamus nursery. How do I order?

what about topsoil? can i substitute worm castings with topsoil. it is hard to find worm castings here in Malaysia and can you explain why peat moss is unsustainable. Thank You
Peat moss is mined from peat bogs, where it took thousands of years to make. It will renew but again, only after thousands of years. So for practical purposes, it is unsustainable.
You can make your own worm castings if you have worms in malasia. Simply take 2 large Tupperware containers over lap them, drill or put small holes in the bottom of the first one, then add your worms, any organic veggie or fruit peels and keep in a garage or somewhere in the house. Water from time to time to get the castings. If you have no worms you can send for them. Can you compost? Worms usually go in the compost. My Aunt used to live in Malaysia, do you have problems with snakes? I hope you are successful. I am in So. Cali. :)
Hi, Shamus! How about citrus trees? Do you carry them and can you make a vid on it? or are they treated the same as a fruit tree?
